Thanks for stopping bye.
In these videos i travel the Norwegian coast by sailboat, I'm anchoring out when ever possible, some facts about our coast:
1: We have a coastline (counting only the mainland) of approximately 24000 km, in addition we have somthing like 239000 islands. If we count every rock and scharies sticking up you can add another 81192 to that number. Total coastline included everything is about 100000 km.
2: we have about 1000000 pleasure crafts in Norway.
in spite of this most Norwegians hurry from marina to marina. I trye to avoid marinas and the most popular anchorages. This migt give of a unrealistic sense of peace and unspoilt nature, but i try to be as realistic as I can.
Not all of my anchorings are done in marked anchorages. And anchoing in places like this increases the danger factor significantly. Dont copy what i do, that can put you, your equipment, your life and other people's lives in danger.
And please keep the nature clean.

Lovely relaxing video. We really enjoyed it 😁Just wondering, what type of anchor do you use and what is the seabed type?
I'm glad you did. However, I was far from happy with it. Due to a broken camera handle (tripod), the recordings were unusable. These few clips were amongst those with somewhat ok audio. For this, i apologise. But i felt i needed to put it out as a closure to the vacation series. My anchor is the original CQR that Bavaria supplied with the boat back in 1996. I am really happy with it. The seabed can be sand, clay, mudd, shells, or pebbles. If the seabed is soft mudd it it will not sett sufficiently. If the seabed is rock, I go elsewhere Underwater vegetation is a challenge, but if you back it in slowly and gently and really take your time, it usually sets just fine. I'm sure these fancy new anchors are better, but these old CQR's are quite affordable. I have acquired my self one 22 kg newer Lewmar version of this anchor (these are welded plate and not forged steel like the old once. This was originally factory fitted to a Bavaria 46, just before they switched over to the Bruce anchor. I'm going to test out this anchor this season. I have also gotten hold of a 36 kg version to see if it fits on the anchorroler. Enjoy your sailing abroad. What a great bit of sailing you guys got sailing to wards warmer weather. I watched it on tv and wasn't able to comment... but I pressed a like. Good stuff, I'm so happy for you
And with that, summer sailing comes to an end.
It sure was. I got to record two more trips, but then it was time to lift the boats out of the water. I'm truly sorry for the poor camera work and the lack of content in this video, but it was not the most interesting sailing I've ever done, and the tripod camera handle got damaged and moust of the recordings was ruined by rattling noises. Thank you so much for tagging along through my videos this year as well. I'll try my best to do better next season. Best regards from Jarle
@StemtoSternSailing Not a bad video, it closes out the vacation. Sometimes a little somber.
Thanks 👍
I forgot to include the link for the map video below. I have now taken care of this, in case you want a more detailed bit of the sailing, with tracks, and even an indication of speeds . Thanks for stopping by.

Yup, its an egg. What a glorious Norwegian summer time.
We were lucky, it's common practice in Norway to divide the workers into two groups, one of the groups has their summer vacation early in the summer, and the second half gets their vacation in the later part of summer. The next year, we swap. This year, we were amongst the late ones. For all of the four weeks, the first group had their vacation it was raining non-stop, in the southwest part of Norway, and when we started ours, the weather started to improve. And it became a glorious Norwegian summer time 😅. And the egg,,,,,, well,,,,, i guess if someone manages to create a successful business out of something like that, we'll i guess it's all good then. But you won't find me dining at the salmon eye any time soon. Thanks for always watching and commenting. i really do appreciate it. I guess the next video won't be out until sometime in January, so I will take the opportunity to wish you and all those around you a wonderful Xmas and all the best for the rapidly approaching 2025. All the best, Jarle
@StemtoSternSailing Merry Christmas Jarle and Family and to a healthy 2025.
Hi Jarle, I would like to ask If overall yoou are happy with the bavaria 41 exclusive and how well it performs, as compared to newer boats as for example oceanis 40. I'm looking to buy one an I have some doubts.
My boat is a good beginners boat, as it is very easy to sail. The biggest drawback i think is the nice curv at the front of the cockpit benches it ruins the best sitting position in the cockpit, the next drawback is that the Stern is a bit narrow, this causes the boat to round up early. however, it does hullspeed quite happily. So it is not a big deal. The cockpit is perfect for singelhanding. Mine has a lead keel and a would recommend this as a good priority. Avoid the volvo penta 22l (50) engine with a timing belt that is a horrible engine. These older bavarias have better quality interior woodwork, but the newer ons har better internal volume. I would like to have a 42 with two steering wheels. It has a nicer cockpit. Good quality for the most part. I guess the oceans 40 is an overall better compromise. But it is more expensive. I would avoid teakdecks. Personally, I would like a masthead rigged boat for cruising due to downward capabilities. Best of luck on your hunt for a boat. Best regards from Jarle. If you have any questions, I'll try to answer to the best of my abilities.
Thanks, Jarle, I like a lot your coments...I agree 100% on the cockpit benches, it's horrible for sitting backwards. >what is the advantage of a lead keel over the iron keel?
@pupo343 The lead keel is physically smaller, and this is better for performance. But that is just a bonus. The big advantage is that it doesn't rust. Some think else I think are better on the ocean models is the satee area in the cabin. I'm contemplating if I should alter the aft corner on my satee so that i would get a 90° corner there. It is a little changing to find a good sitting position the way it is laid out from the factory. The bavaria 40 cruiser has this solution. Best regards from Jarle
Decent weather with a few squalls. Sundal is a beautiful area. The moutain lake looked worth the hike.
It is absolutely worth the effort. The bit that we did is quite easy. The trail further is a bit more uneven and rough but definitely doable for most people. I'm already looking forward to next season. I hope to get further north again this time. Have you gotten son sailing in this season? Thanks again for watching and commenting. Best regards from Jarle
@StemtoSternSailing tried to get a few late season sails in before the lake was drained, but the rains made it unpleasent. The States west coast does not have the ports and the distances are far, unlike Norway where it looks like you can duck into any port
@olivei2484 Yes, it's an easy place to sail in any regard. And there are many nooks to anchor in. You mentioned that you and a friend that you would go sailing in a bigger boat. Will there be any videos about this in the future ?
@@StemtoSternSailing Not of the bigger boat, it's a Santana 2023 . I may have some light wind sailing footage.
Can you show a map when you talk about places please? You can get wind protectors for you microphone/camera please?
The video description holds a link to the map explaining. th-cam.com/video/bjwWLX92CwY/w-d-xo.html I have a wind protection thing on, maybe I need a new one but it is an annoying problem. I'll see what I can do in next seasons videos Best regards, Jarle
Hello Jarle, long time since I`ve got the chance to see your videos unfortunally. So it was very nice to see that your passage across Sletto went well, we have done that many times, and some of the times it is really not that nice at all! But life happens, and sorry to see you have to return the day after.. It is so nice to see the Norwegian coastline😀
Thanks for stopping by Thomas, I've been getting some glimpses of your progress heading south, I'm impressed by anyone who manages to do a trip like that with the whole family on board. But it will turn into fantastic treasures in the chest of memories later on, and in the end, that is all that matters. Stay safe. Best regards from Jarle
Fint å se deg i min heimlige skjærgård.
Blitt glad i Mango. Flott båt som seiler fint. Passe stor og tilfredsstiller slik et travelt liv er nå om dagen. Hvem vet hva fremtiden bringer?? God seilas videre. ⛵️⛵️
Hi Jarle, what a lovely part of the world to sail. Minimal swell with a decent breeze. That boat of yours really goes well. Best wishes... Dave
Thank you so much, Dave. I give all the credit to the boat for its performance. It is a perfect beginners boat, very forgiving. You requested maps. Hi. We have really enjoyed all your videos this year. The sailing and scenery have been great. You have a fantastic sailing ground. Keep making the videos, they're really enjoyable 👍👍😁😁⛵
Thank you so much. I find it rather interesting to watch your videos as well. You have so many extra challenges compared to sailing in Norway. We have sheltered waters and so many tranquil anchorages, and we very seldom need to take tides into consideration. So , watching your videos is good information for myself. Thanks for the great videos you make while drinking tea. Best regards from Jarle
Hi Jarle, Stunning sailing grounds as ever and the house looked amazing👍🏻⛵ All the best, Paul
@SCCFORUM Thanks for watching and commenting. I guess I should have recorded more on this trip, but I wasn't sure if I would turn the recordings into a video or not. But at the same time, I wanted to show you guys the other main sail as well. I generally struggled to pick up the camera enough in the time before the real sail of the season. Even our main trip was hampered by unforseen life events, so this is unfortunately not going to be my best season of videos. But I'll try to make something out of it. Best regards from Jarle
Looking good Jarle. Hope you are having a nice 2024 sailing season.

This is a great 'uncluttered' window into a sail that looked very speicl to me, new subscriber.
Thanks and welcome to the channel. I plan to create more videos showing how I do my sailing but mor like segments in my more usual video format. Wenn hoisting...
Yes i usualy have the autopilot engaged, but when I need to turn the boat around to head into the wind right outside the marina i tend to just put a little tention on the wheel brake so thet the helm dosen't wander like it did. If I'm steeming into the wind faster, or if it's blowing more i prefer a loose mainsheet, but when I'm just bobbing around slowly, like i did here I find it almost easier when the boom is a little restricted. But it looked like a mess in the video mostly because I forgot to apply the brake on the helm. Thanks for the comment, very good points that wold have made it all go alot smoother. I rebuilt the rudder before this season and I need to balance the rudder blade alittle bit better, I need to extend the trailing edge 10 to 15 mm as it seems to be more eager to wander of the "straight ahead" position now, compared to what it did before. Thanks for shearing your good insights. Best regards from Jarle
I would have eased the main sheet. And set the auto pilot...
Lovely sail I sailed a lot in New Zealand many days similar
I'd love to sail to New Zealand and spend som time there.... but it is sooooo far away from Norway. But maybe someday.... Thanks for watching and commenting. Best regards from Jarle
Nice job Captain! Your boat looks similar to my Hunter 40.
Thank you Captain!! The Hunter 40 is a nice boat, there was one for sale in Norway this winter. Unfortunately out of my price range. My boat is a Bavaria 41 that came of the production line early in 1996. (1995 was the first year they built this model) Thanks for watching and comenting. Its highly anticipated. Best regards from Jarle
Please either turn up the volume at your end, or provide CCs.
Thanks for your feedback, i hope to upgrade my camera equipment and get a proper mic. I checked the audio at this video an it was ruined by background noise picked up by the camera. It has two microphones built in, to better be able to favour the primary sound. But as the camera was clamped onto the railing of the boat it somehow picked up the sounds transmitted through the mount. Im terribly sorry. Ill se if I can work out the CC bit. Thank you so much for reporting this. Best regards from Jarle
Looking good. The different camera angle was nice.
Thanks, trying to find good ways and spots to set up the camera, but im having problems with noises thst is picked up from stuff onboard like autopilot and such. Thanks for watching and commenting. Best regards from Jarle
@@StemtoSternSailing I was wondering what the clicking sound was, but you sped up the video through a lot, so not a huge deal. its a part of boating, so it belongs.
@olivei2484 a good illustration of the fact that time flies when you have fun 😄 best regards from Jarle
Hey Jarle, What a lovely anchorage - the sort that you always dream of. Watching you, I think, "yes I do that, and that, oh and that and thank god for the autopilot" Take care .... Dave
Thanks for the comment Dave,,, im sorry i haven't been able to include any maps in my videos yet, I've been looking into it, but not quite arrived at a suitable solution at the moment. For the cruiseing plans for my upcoming season i have paper charts coverage, and therefore I plan on using these for such a purpose in my new videos. Sadly i haven't been out for any sails yet. But soon ill be off . Yes the autopilot is absolutely mandatory. It failed on my way to winter storage in quite the blow... i managed to sail still, but it was not as easy. This vinter i managed to secure my self an aries vindwane for upcoming plans 😁. Thak you so much for watching. Best regards from Jarle

@@StemtoSternSailing Hi Jarle, I photograph part of my chart, or the chart plotter and sometimes grab a bit of google maps. I use crop and zoom in the editor to show the bits I'm interested in. I'm finding that my videos are getting shorter as I add a bit more pace to them. Most scenes are 3 to 5 seconds long and then I cut to another. I seem to get longer views, maybe people don't get bored and hang on in there. I'm also monotized now so I get a few pence for each view, which is great fun... Take care - Dave
First of all. Congratulations on your achievements, ti is well deserved. I have tried to use Google earth and Google maps, but due to the very complicated coast line it gets very "fuzzy" or chaotic and if i zoom in i can't seem to get enough of the leg saild in the frame... but thanks ill keep trying. I haven't recorded any 2024 sailing yet. But I have come up with some ideas that i might get to work. But thanks a lot for your info on how you do it, hard to notice in the videos as your editing makes it seem so seamless. Ind thanks for the feedback on your results it was most useful. And i apologise for that I haven't managed to watch your propeller video. Im looking forward to watching it. As you know i have had som troubles with this myself and the side effect of vinegar... i appreciate your help and ideas. Ps how is the heateexchanger issues coming along. I sadly need to wait another 10 to 15 years until I slip the lines for an greater adventure. In the meantime I'll be sailing the Norwegian coast and a few visits to our neighboring countries. While i prepare myself and my vessel for greater things. Regarding my pondering about building my own steel or aluminum vessel is somewhat put on ice. Due to high material costs and a shrinking time frame... ( on ice not dead) but I'll probably stick to my Bavaria.... but we'll see . Thanks again for watching and commenting. Best regards from Jarle P.s. Looking forward to your next episode the Dodger looks great.
@@StemtoSternSailing Hey welcome and I am humbled by your very kind reply Jarle and btw I have commented on at least one of your earlier episodes 🙂 I too also hope that one day we could cross oceans paths,.. Good on you for your great sailing adventures in your part of this beautiful world and also for attending to your 'other' life responsibilities, whatever they may be! It seems to me that you have a beautiful yacht in your Bavaria, wishing you all the best ahead sir and thank you for following Mistress' journeys!
@@BuildingSYMistress yes i remember. But it's still an honor for me. I'll keep a sharp look out for Mistress both on the horizon and in the more virtual world. Stay safe and enjoy your progress. Best regards from Jarle

Sailing Smart Siturations on windys 👏👏👏🐼🐅🐵🐵🐵 beautyful
Thank you for watching and commenting. Best regards from Jarle
Great sailing, Jarle ⛵️💨
It was a fantastisk day sailing. I've seen you showing off some great boat handeling and even squeezing in a trip to Sweden,,, and I've only just launched the boat. Of for a short sail this week i hope. Best regards from Jarle
@@StemtoSternSailing as you know, I'm sailing in all season's ⛵️🤩
@martinrasmussen i know. My haul out situation is limiting me in doing the same. Im also doing a lot of catching up on maintenance so i need the time on the hard. But someday it will caught up.... Best regards from Jarle
Great sailing video. Looking good! Always nice to have other boats around.
It was a fantastic sail, and I enjoyed every minute of it. Just like i am right now. Just ran out of wind. So now im motoring towards my anchorage for the night. Best regards from Jarle
@@StemtoSternSailing I liked how you sailed past that ketch, good sail trimming.
It looked like he was motor sailing with only the genoa sett. Probably why he was rolling so much. But those old ketch rigged Halberg Rassys shure looks salty.
Thank you
Literally... my pleasure. thak you so much for watching and comenting. Best regards from Jarle
Brilliant sailing Jarle⛵and the wave joke was funny. 😃 Do you cover your instrument column because it is not waterproof or is it just extra protection? All the best, Paul.
😂😂 well I believe it is suppose to be waterproof, but by the looks of it (ive been replacing stuff inside) if it is waterproof is just dumb luck. So i cover it up just in case. Thanks for watching Paul. I do appreciate it. Launched the boat yesterday. And im bending on the sails today. So soon I'll be on my way to my home port. Best regards from Jarle
Fin video Jarle! I always check the 'Gusts" on windy instead of the normal one. Its more correct i think. But the Norweigan coast is unpredictable with all the fjords and islands and such, so its not always easy to predict
Takk takk . Akkurat sjøsatt båten... litt problemer. Men den flyter 😁 været kan man gjøre lite med. Men dette var en herlig seilas. Takk for at du såg på . Ser du koser deg på sjøen . Nå blir det godt å komme igang
I check gusts too. One finding with Windy, is the European model ( in our area) is always higher than the North Am model. So, in some respects its a better model to follow, for the extremes.
@olivei2484 i haven't compared them around here. Could be interesting to see. 👍
Hi Jarle. Another fantastic video. Love seeing and hearing about the history of your sailing grounds.👍🏻⛵ All the best mate, Paul.
Thank you so much Paul. I'll try to do more stuff like that when ever i get to places that carry some history that i come across. How is the compack 23 coming along? Best regards from Jarle
@@StemtoSternSailing Hi Jarle. Looking forward to your coming season. The 23 is coming on OK. I am looking forward to motoring down the Thames past tower bridge and getting the sails up. I have finally got the mast raising system sorted, just waiting for the weather to change. 👍🏻⛵
@SCCFORUM great news. I hope you remember to bring the camera. My boat is being launched i a couple of weeks. Im so looking forward to sailing again. Take care. Best regards from Jarle
Nice spring sailing, Jarle. God vind til dig i 2024 🙏🏼😎
Thanks Martin, this is still episodes from last season, I release my videos every 3 weeks to keep the channel in the loop. I'm putting on the botompaint today so im launching soon. Really looking forward to being out there sailing again. I have seen that you ar having a great time on the ocean. Thanks for watching and commenting. Best regards from Jarle
How a bout a quick video of the work on the hard?
Perhaps i could do something tomorrow... I'll see what i can do. A few months back I was asked by a fellow Norwegian TH-cam sailing channel if i could be so kind as to put my maintenance videos back up. Ss you know I removed yhem from this channel because they messed up my algorithm. So i did not want to do that. Instead i just threw together a secondary channel and started to re upload those videos there. When I've managed to edit all of my maintenance videos and so on i was planning on introducing this channel here. But it's slow going. And the channel is in a beta stage at the moment. If you are interested i can put up a link, and perhaps give a quick realtime update there ?!? Best regards from Jarle
@@StemtoSternSailing I like your maintenance vids too. You have a great mechanical skill set that I lack. I can't recall if you have a community tab on Stem to Stern chanel? Can always throw a link up there.
@olivei2484 youtube.com/@stemtosternsailing6802?si=DfMeK9zRoazKcGLG I think this should work
So the season has started! Great video. The vestlands rain looks relentless though :o
No this is still videos from 2023. I release videos every 3 weeks, just to keep the channel going. And of course if i would upload more often I'm sure people would get sick and tired of my boring videos 😄 thanks for watching and comenting. I see your beautiful Alo is coming along nicely. I'm currently working my ass of trying to get the boat back into the water. Best regards from Jarle
@@StemtoSternSailing ah I see, it’s nice watching Norwegian sailing videos. Well, I think we are all working hard to make our boats ready for the season currently. Hope we can meet up this summer 🙏
@@sailingfishcake that shuld be doable, I'll be in touch as the summer holiday is creaping up on us. So that we can find a suitable place to meet up. Best regards from Jarle
Again, nice anchorage at 6:50. Good you had a back-up plan and made the descision that suited you and your boat. Somber tour of a bit of Norway's past.
Thanks for always beeing there watching and commenting on my videos, it means so much to me. It sure was a great little anchorage , and im sure a spade anchor would have held in this soft muddy bottom. There are 3 or 4 mooing pullards in this cove to Moore up a vessel or 2 perhaps 3 rafted up vessels in there, so i could have strung up lines to shore and been safe. However there were a few smal fisshing skiffs moving about in that aera, using it as a shortcut, and I didn't watnt to surprise them with some hard to see lines in or just above the water. bUt I'm definitely coming back to this anchorage in better conditions. Thanks again for watching. Best regards from Jarle
Hey, so happy to see you out there ❗️👍
It makes me so happy to be out there , this part of the Norwegian coast is fantastic to behold but difficult to sail, due to all of the underwater rocks and shallows. In Norway we refer to this aera as the toadmarsh ("padde myr" in Norwegian) thank you so mutch for watching and commenting. Best regards from Jarle
Keep up the good work And have a happy day ❤

So that i can can trye to improve my videos even further. Thank yor for all your comments, thay also contribute to put a smile on my face. I hope you and everyone around you can bee happy in this crazy world we live in these days. Best regards from Jarle
Thanks, but there are quite a few great ones out there, i just try to find inspiration in everyone I get to watch or somehow interact with. From this I try my best to create something that hopefully cam be of use to someone else. But all these amazing comments sure is a great motivator for me. Thanks for your kind words.
