    Had a bike similar to that . Mine was a ‘66 YG1K. Didn’t have the fairing and I replaced the full chain guard with the slimmer, more sporty type which only covered the top of the chain. Was a great little bike . Top speed of about 50 mph. Paid $425 CAD . Would have liked a Honda S90 or Yamaha twin 100 but they were around $500.

    Dowty Seal. So called because they were invented by the Dowty company of Cheltenham in 1945, manufacturer of aircraft components. The generic name is 'bonded seal' - a seal bonded to a washer.

    You will need to remove the choke gizzmo's! The Mk1 concentrics are diabolical things. their pilot jets are bushing fitted in the pilot passageways. Bloody difficult to remove any blockages. One sure method is to drill out the blanking plug opposite the pilot mixture screw then, clear the blockage & use some epoxy to seal the drilled hole. Mk1.5 units already have a removable screw for just such purposes; what does that tell you?. but, over time, the carby bodies will warp causing further issues. I would not have them even as a gift! MK 2 Amals or Mikuni's are the way to go, at least in my opinion. glad it started well for you.

    Im currently stripping my engine down. How did you secure the primary shaft in place to undo the nut?

  • @windfall35
    @windfall35 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    This is a highly valuable step-by-step explanation of one of the most difficult elements of removing the engine-the combination of airbox and carburetor removal...I particularly appreciate how much trouble the presenter goes to get great camera angles so that you can see exactly what he's working on and follow along. A great deal of technique is required. Having just completed the process on my own 400f some ideas for your consideration that helped me remove/re-install the carburetor was to use a ratchet strap wrapped around the front of the plastic airbox plenum to pull the airbox towards the rear of the bike and gain a few precious centimeters...Be sure to remove the metal sleeve that runs into the filter box forward into the plastic airbox before attempting to remove the carbs. Whether removing the carbs or re-installing once the carbs are back in line between the manifold and the airbox plenum, get on top of the bike and straddling it reach down (wear gloves) and wiggle the carbs up and down and forward and aft to either break them loose from the front and rear boots (or when re-installing) to get the carb intakes and exhausts back into the front and rear boots. Be sure to put some lubricant on the insides of the boots. I also found using a heat gun to warm up the boots helped soften them. I also recommend placing the metal tighteners around the boots very loosely before inserting the carbs in between the airbox/engine manifold space. Leave the airbox metal sleeve out while re-inserting the carbs as you'll want to pin the airbox back with the ratchet straps while you insert, then remove the straps and (straddling the bike from above) wiggle the carbs up and down and front and back to insert the boots. Finally, a trick that I used once I got the out two outer airbox rubber boots on the intake of the carbs and needed to get the internal two airbox rubbers to go on the carb was to (1) clamp the outer two airbox rubbers onto the carbs and then get a 1" X 1" X 5: piece of wood inserted horizontally into the plastic airbox from the air filter box and then use a longer vertical piece of wood to 'lever' the horizontal piece of wood to push the front wall of the plastic airbox forward so that the inner boots cover the inner two carb intakes. After clamping the two inner airbox rubbers I then re-inserted the metal airbox sleeve running from air filter box into the plastic airbox plenum and tightened the metal clamp that holds the plastic airbox/metal sleeve and airfilter box together. Then I had (badly needed) a beer...

      Thanks for your response, I really appreciate the amount of time you spent giving us all some excellent information. Further to this video the carbs have been off again due to the type of fuel we have in the UK. I have to say I tried my method and yours with the wooden block lever thing but my airbox was too far gone. I bought a new one from David Silver spares and the job took about 10mins instead of an hour. The only downside was that I didnt think I deserved a beer..........but I had one anyway.🤣

  • @yamaha7237
    @yamaha7237 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Just watched your video Nice YCS5E but it does have a few falts, sounds like you have been talking to my mate Steve Chapman, his tank is NOS and very rare with reverse colours so hence is price, I too have that same tank on my YCS5E. Your tank is the right sise for your bike but what is wrong is the conbination of Tank to seat, Yamaha made two sises for the CS5, large tank and shorter seat or small tank with longer seat which was for the US market, So what you have is the UK big tank with the US seat and so to make it fit they have move the hinges up one bolt hole, to get round that you would have to get a small tank or stay with the tank then change the seat, I have come across this issue with people many times before, so buying Steve tank at £750 would be the same as yours and you would be no better off arpart it is in the original purple paint, very nice!! I have known Steve a long time and like me knows his 1970s Yamaha stuff. Hope this helps and keep up the good work as I love all Yamaha YCS5Es and YCS3Es Colin🙂🙂🙂

    That looks like the tank that is made in India. I made a similar bracket to locate it. They are £230 direct but i had mine in primer as i paint my own bikes. Your taps are wrong, you can get taps that will have a 90 degree turn at the exit point making it very easy to clear.

    • @toooldtodieyoungmotorcyle
      @toooldtodieyoungmotorcyle 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yep my old tank was an after market fibreglass tank which got eaten by ethanol. As for the taps they should be push-pull ones and i will get round to fitting some at some stage. I am not fully bothered about total originality as this is a returned USA bike which were cobled together using any parts they had at the factory. Most spitfires have the full width brake 190 as per the gold start but mine does not have that one. its probably off a lightning.

    • @mrstupid
      @mrstupid 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@toooldtodieyoungmotorcyle I use the very common lever taps that have the copper 90 degree bend. They work very well. My fibreglass tank gave up last year so i have the Indian tank and the stickers on the side came from Australia as they were half the cost of UK suppliers. If you get a chance, it is easy to add an oil filter just in front of the rear wheel hidden out of sight. Your rear wheel and front are both Lightning or Thunderbolt. Interesting wheel bearings in the rear as they have 3 bearings. One of them is a different size to the others. Keep playing with it and enjoy. I see you have a Thunderbird LT like i have too.

  • @mrstupid
    @mrstupid 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Amal would have not told you to fit choke sliders without the cable to hold it off. You are now operating on full choke so i doubt it will make 40 mph before fouling the plugs. You do need a reasonable skill level and some correct tools plus knowledge of old British bikes to run this. I have spent over 50 years on these bikes so far

    • @toooldtodieyoungmotorcyle

      I cut my teeth on BSA bikes back in the day. Not my first rodeo and my videos are aimed at people who are maybe trying their hand at restoration. I got so much flack the first time I built a wheel on youtube and told to leave it to the experts. I had it checked at a pro wheel builder who told me it was done perfectly. Not everything is filmed. I appreciate your comments though. The BSA videos are quite old and the bike is running perfectly now. 50 years experience so what? maybe you have been doing it wrong for 50 years. Just Saying.

    • @toooldtodieyoungmotorcyle

  • @mrstupid
    @mrstupid 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You have the wrong carbs. They should be 32mm and you have 30 mm ones. I would doubt the jets are appropriate for the bike either having the wrong carbs. All Spitfires using the Amal type are 32 mm unless someone has fitted a Lightning head with smaller intakes. Mine starts very well using genuine old Amal 32mm
