Hello, I would recommend pruning them when they become "leggy" when the tops or sides are thin and spindly. You want to only take a small amount off just clipping them. Then by pruning them back a small amount each year even though they are not tall it will help thicken them up and when it does become your desired end height it will be a thick bushy structurally sound hedge. Hello, this is a common cherry laurel Prunus Laurocerasus. Novita is a newly developed variety of the standard Cherry Laurel, a more hardier all weather tolerant variety but they are very similar. 👍

You're welcome that's great to hear. I used a leaf mould mulch on this which gets some grass clippings mixed in to help it break down.

That's great to hear, yeah sometimes the right tool for the job makes a huge difference. Sounds like a real project you have to undertake, fortunately when I did this the water level was low as slugde is never fun to get in, all the best with it! 👍

Hello Rich what a fantastic story and bit of history thank you for sharing. Sounds like an amazing garden to grow up in I would love to see how those trees were cared for. Would be pretty amazing to get some cuttings from them and graft/ grow new trees from that old tree if it's still there. Its a shame nowadays fruit trees are not seen as valuable to have in a garden as they once were. I think some people are changing though and appreciating home grown apples and other fruits, it is a bit of work and effort but if you enjoy doing it, it becomes more of a hobby or lifestyle and not work. Thanks again for sharing 👍

Hello, thanks for sharing your story I think with bamboo it's very dependent on the variety and location to how vigorous they grow. I haven't found any problems with this and have been featuring this plant in yearly updates and will continue to do so, so will see how it develops. I have had experience with bamboo planted in an area for 15 years unmanaged and it kept to a small size equally bamboo planted in a different area for 2 years and has doubled in size so it really does vary. 👍

Hey Kevin absolutely you can go in hard to the bare wood and new leaves will grow from the wood. I have taken 10ft laurels down to a stump with no leaves left and grown them back into a small 3ft shrub. Just make sure your cuts are clean no tears or rips 👍

Hello Deborah, thanks very much. It has been contained well and hasn't escaped at all if you are interested in an update have a look at my bamboo video where I reduce the height of this bamboo. I think by allowing enough space in the barrier for the bamboo to still grow it won't try to escape it will just guide the roots to stay in the barrier. In the future it may need to be split and new soil added to allow it to keep growing rather than it becoming "pot bound". I think the main thing with bamboo is getting the variety right for your location and choosing less invasive species. Hope this helps 😊👍

Hey Pauline thanks so much for the comment and your story that's lovely to hear. Thats fantastic to have that many old trees and sounds like you are doing everything right with them for your situation. I also like to take the height out to keep it manageable and encourage lower fruiting buds. Yes it doesn't produce more leafy growth if you catch it at the right time if too early absolutely you will get leafy growth. I sometimes do the same while you are up there you can do the odd thinning out of spurs as long as it's not too drastic, I show this in my newer summer apple pruning video it's well worth a watch if your interested. That's great to hear we can only learn if we experiment and try these things out. 😁👍

Hello, thanks for the comment, in this scenario I used the fabric along the front to prevent the bamboo encroaching onto the lawn. It doesn't spread backwards due to the foundations of the small garden wall as it is not a very invasive bamboo variety. In my "Bamboo Privacy Screen" video I use the fabric on the front and back of the bamboo and also go into more depth about the root barrier so it's worth a watch if you are interested. I believe in this video it was a rubber pond liner that I used as the barrier. Hope this helps 👍

Hello, thanks for the comment on your experience. I am yet to try pruning at that time of year so will certainly experiment with that to see if it works with my trees. I usually go with a summer prune to prevent the excess vegetative growth however some circumstances do need a winter prune when they are very overgrown then a summer prune follow up afterwards which brings it back in to focus on fruiting growth. 👍

Hey Jasmine sorry to hear that they are very invasive once they get going. There certainly are lots of commercial sprays on the market that would kill the brambles down to the root although I am not a fan of chemical use. My advice would be if you are going down that route is to cut the brambles down to the ground then wait for them to re shoot so you are spraying their new leaves with the systemic weed killer and wear the appropriate PPE to prevent contact with you. 👍

Thanks for the comment really glad this helped you. Absolutely if you do it while it's dormant you can reduce the height dramatically. Make sure to keep the main branch structure so you can develop your spur network on them so the fruit is close to and can be held by the strong branches. I would recommend a follow up summer prune as after a hard prune you will get a lot of leafy growth and water shoots. I have two videos on summer pruning apple trees that may help you. 😁👍

Hello, you can prune sea breeze bamboo, I wouldn't recommend cutting immature canes that are shooting as this can kill the canes you prune off, I only would advise cutting the mature canes that have hardened. Hope this helps 👍

Hey Jeff thanks for the comment, I summer pruned this apple tree on the week of the 22nd of July as it was ready to be done. However I do have other apple trees I haven't pruned yet as this prune can be done throughout August as well. The key sign to look for is the majority of the trees leaf tips have hardened so it doesn't put on extra foliage growth after the prune. 👍

Hey Teddy good question, I have had it in the past from doing a lot of garden clearing jobs where you are grabbing, pulling and digging out weeds, shrubs and trees and doing lots of heavy cut backs. Since then I try to vary my gardening jobs each day or week so am not putting constant strain and stress on the same part of my body. So one day hedge cutting the next hand shearing you use different muscles and tendons with these two tasks, there will be some cross over but the best thing is not to be tense when you work don't hold the tool really tight be relaxed in the arms and hands then it becomes more effortless.
