Hi. If you are taking the height down, how far down do you go?
Hello! If my newly planted shrubs are now 110 cm high and I want to build a hedge between them, which would be 200 cm, when should I prune them first? Should I wait until they reach the desired height and only then start pruning?
Hello, I would recommend pruning them when they become "leggy" when the tops or sides are thin and spindly. You want to only take a small amount off just clipping them. Then by pruning them back a small amount each year even though they are not tall it will help thicken them up and when it does become your desired end height it will be a thick bushy structurally sound hedge. Hope this helps 👍
How long it took to reach this size?
I didn't plant this hedge but I would estimate about 15 years, hope this helps.
Do you happen to know the name of this Prunus laurocerasus. Is it NOVITA?
Hello, this is a common cherry laurel Prunus Laurocerasus. Novita is a newly developed variety of the standard Cherry Laurel, a more hardier all weather tolerant variety but they are very similar. 👍
Thanks for this , I’ve two merging bushy plants to tidy upland separate , very helpful 😊
Hey Paul that's great to hear, sometimes these jobs go unnoticed until they get in a real state, glad you found this helpful 👍
thank you so much, very informative
Thanks for the comment means a lot, you are very welcome 👍
Can you take the cutting and put them in water to get roots? Maybe growing them in pots or vases? I love this! That’s for posting
Thanks for that video, very helpful. I am going to sort out my bamboo tomorrow now. What type of mulch did you use?
You're welcome that's great to hear. I used a leaf mould mulch on this which gets some grass clippings mixed in to help it break down.
excellent again my friend ,, I have a customer with bamboos and they always cause me concern , but I am just going to do exactly what you have shown, well done they look really neat and tidy now , top man thanks again
Hey Stevie thanks for the comment mate glad this helped. Bamboo can certainly become a menace always good to keep them open clean and tidy. Hope all goes well at your customers 👍
Hi, Thanks for the great video. Our pond was is similar, but I was struggling to cut up the pieces. Tools I am using: spade, rake and bushcraft saw. Changing to an old woodsaw was the difference, having smaller teeth. Doh! I am now halfway through, but our pond I dug is on three levels, so I may have to swim in sludge 😮
That's great to hear, yeah sometimes the right tool for the job makes a huge difference. Sounds like a real project you have to undertake, fortunately when I did this the water level was low as slugde is never fun to get in, all the best with it! 👍
Outstanding video. An excellent accompaniment to winter prune video!
Thanks so much for the comment it's much appreciated. I hope it helped you with your apple pruning 👍
My house I grew up in had i think one of the oldest bramleys In the uk. It was built on the orchard of Ruthin Castle. Used to find lots of clay pipes as a kid. I don’t know if it’s still there. Had to sadly sell due to divorce. Used to have 7 as a kid but I kept one and found this information. I know they were introduced only a certain number of hundred years back. Crop was giant 4-6” apples and 15+ big guerrilla tubs of apples off that tree. My dad was a market gardener and mobile shop in 60-90s. It makes sense with it connected to the castle etc. it was called Isgoed, Welsh, meaning low woods. I knew the builder of our house. He was an apprentice in 1928 then and remembered the orchard as his old barn workshop was attached and next to us. Im near 60 now btw. Just thought I’d throw this bit of info in lol. I hope new owners didn’t chop it flat. It would be such a shame.
Hello Rich what a fantastic story and bit of history thank you for sharing. Sounds like an amazing garden to grow up in I would love to see how those trees were cared for. Would be pretty amazing to get some cuttings from them and graft/ grow new trees from that old tree if it's still there. Its a shame nowadays fruit trees are not seen as valuable to have in a garden as they once were. I think some people are changing though and appreciating home grown apples and other fruits, it is a bit of work and effort but if you enjoy doing it, it becomes more of a hobby or lifestyle and not work. Thanks again for sharing 👍

Great video, thanks very much!
You're very welcome! Thank you for your comment its much appreciated 👍
Excellent!
Thank you glad you liked it 😁👍
Now show what they look like after 4 years. Ours became a nightmare to maintain after we started controlling the height. Say we just had to take it out, which was a massive undertaking as well.
Hello, thanks for sharing your story I think with bamboo it's very dependent on the variety and location to how vigorous they grow. I haven't found any problems with this and have been featuring this plant in yearly updates and will continue to do so, so will see how it develops. I have had experience with bamboo planted in an area for 15 years unmanaged and it kept to a small size equally bamboo planted in a different area for 2 years and has doubled in size so it really does vary. 👍
VERY NICE!!! THANK YOU FOR THE LESSON!!! I WANT A BAMBOO SCREEN FENCE NOW!!😊
You are very welcome thanks for leaving a comment. I really like using bamboo in this way in the garden I think it looks really effective. Do check out my other bamboo videos in the playlist, there is one on installing a bamboo screen from purchase to plant 😁👍
Gave me a few ideas. Thanks
Thanks for commenting glad this helped 😁👍

Hello, I didn't think of that apologies. I will bear that mind for future videos thanks for bringing it to my attention 😊👍
Excellent tips, I love my Rhodi's 😊
Thank you for the comment it's much appreciated. They are amazing shrubs that certainly bring a lot of joy to a garden 😊
Thank you, this just what I was looking for. I want grow my Rhodes out of a the “umbrella shape” and get train it into a bit of a hedge. I need to get to work letting the sun in through my top heavy bushes. Thank you ☺️
That's great to hear, I'm glad you found this video as I tried to include as many examples as possible. Sounds like a good plan to help the light and energy get to those dormant lower buds, all the best 😁👍
Thank you for your excellent instruction! Now adding Rhodo pruning to my list. I was told that Rhodos don't recover well from pruning so I've always avoided it...
You are very welcome I'm really glad this video helped you out. I think sometimes mistakes people make get told as the plants fault rather than doing things correctly at the right time of year cutting back to the right point. Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment 😁👍
Many thanks, Adam for this informative video on how to correctly prune rhododendrons. I am one of the few people in my town who have rhododendrons. I have wanted to prune them but was afraid to do so until now. Cheers from Ken in Alabama USA
Hey Ken, you are very welcome that's really great to hear this has given you the confidence to get the job done as that's what this channel is all about. They are fantastic plants that add a lot of interest to a garden. All the best mate 👍
Brother, I used to love wind now I hate it lol
I totally hear you, it's no fun to work it makes work harder to do and the mess twice as hard to clear up!👍
I need to reduce the height and thickness as it’s becoming too wide and taking over, can you go quite evasive and it won’t kill it?
Hey Kevin absolutely you can go in hard to the bare wood and new leaves will grow from the wood. I have taken 10ft laurels down to a stump with no leaves left and grown them back into a small 3ft shrub. Just make sure your cuts are clean no tears or rips 👍
Hi there! I really like your bamboo videos! I saw your video when you planted this bamboo screen and would just like to ask if it has been well contained in the barrier that you put in or if it has tried to 'escape' it at all or if the barrier really does the job of restricting it to your side of the fence? There are lots of conflicting info around about bamboo and I am trying to learn from people that actually have practical experience with it - Many thanks in advance!
Hello Deborah, thanks very much. It has been contained well and hasn't escaped at all if you are interested in an update have a look at my bamboo video where I reduce the height of this bamboo. I think by allowing enough space in the barrier for the bamboo to still grow it won't try to escape it will just guide the roots to stay in the barrier. In the future it may need to be split and new soil added to allow it to keep growing rather than it becoming "pot bound". I think the main thing with bamboo is getting the variety right for your location and choosing less invasive species. Hope this helps 😊👍
I’m exhausted from watching you clear that pond! Spectacular job. New subscriber here whose going through watching all your videos. Cheers from Ken in Alabama USA
Hey Ken, thanks so much for the comment that's great to hear, very happy to have you on board. Glad you're enjoying the content, a new video will be out tomorrow, all the best 😁👍
Love to see a shot of it when its all bedded in.
Best way to deal with the cuttings - a shreder. The resulting compost from all our shredding provides the growing medium for my hanging baskets which I hang, 2 per tree, out of the branches of the apple trees. It eliminates issues with slugs and snails too and adds a welcome 'extra' layer of colour to the garden. Lovely to get a reply. Thanks.
Hey Pauline thanks for the comment and recommendation. What a great idea to use your apple shredding in hanging baskets in the apple trees. I can imagine it looks great thanks for sharing 😁👍
Can't thank you enough, because you've given me hope that I can contain the outbreak. But even more thanks if you add an apostrophe to your channel name: "Gardener's Tale" or, if your name is Gardener or if there is more than one gardener: "Gardeners' Tale".
Hello, you are very welcome thanks for taking the time to comment. Ah yes I will get that sorted thanks for pointing it out 😁👍
Wow ...at last someone working on a real mature tree. We have 10 x 90 year old trees this size and for the past twenty years I have pruned in the summer with an extra bit of spur pruning in the winter. I have now managed to produce fruiting branches much lower on the trees and my husband takes the height off the top in winter to keep them manageable and reduce the risk of me breaking my neck off the ladder when I do the top growth with the long pruners. I started to do this because it was such a cold job in January plus waiting for dry days when I wasn't working but was never quite sure I was doing the right thing. People kept telling me I would only produce more leafy growth. Now proven wrong! It's a nice job in July/August and I have now taken to some spur pruning at the same time because it is easier to see the ones that need to go. PS We inherited the trees when they were close on 40 years old so I felt brave enough to experiment on them. The apples are as scrummy as ever! 😁 Thanks for the video.
Hey Pauline thanks so much for the comment and your story that's lovely to hear. Thats fantastic to have that many old trees and sounds like you are doing everything right with them for your situation. I also like to take the height out to keep it manageable and encourage lower fruiting buds. Yes it doesn't produce more leafy growth if you catch it at the right time if too early absolutely you will get leafy growth. I sometimes do the same while you are up there you can do the odd thinning out of spurs as long as it's not too drastic, I show this in my newer summer apple pruning video it's well worth a watch if your interested. That's great to hear we can only learn if we experiment and try these things out. 😁👍
Hi when you used the root blocker fabric to plant new ones did you put it down to cover the front back and bottom? Or did you do it just to the front like the other one? What material did you use for the blocker? Thanks 😊
Hello, thanks for the comment, in this scenario I used the fabric along the front to prevent the bamboo encroaching onto the lawn. It doesn't spread backwards due to the foundations of the small garden wall as it is not a very invasive bamboo variety. In my "Bamboo Privacy Screen" video I use the fabric on the front and back of the bamboo and also go into more depth about the root barrier so it's worth a watch if you are interested. I believe in this video it was a rubber pond liner that I used as the barrier. Hope this helps 👍
I prune after bud open now. No more suckers. And apples are double sized now. Pruning in the winter is apeshit crazy. The tree has time to react and grows nothing but vegetative sprouts instead of fruit.
Hello, thanks for the comment on your experience. I am yet to try pruning at that time of year so will certainly experiment with that to see if it works with my trees. I usually go with a summer prune to prevent the excess vegetative growth however some circumstances do need a winter prune when they are very overgrown then a summer prune follow up afterwards which brings it back in to focus on fruiting growth. 👍
I have a garden that was taken over by brambles. Roots are very deep is there any spay that would kill the roots off before I start hacking the ground?
Hey Jasmine sorry to hear that they are very invasive once they get going. There certainly are lots of commercial sprays on the market that would kill the brambles down to the root although I am not a fan of chemical use. My advice would be if you are going down that route is to cut the brambles down to the ground then wait for them to re shoot so you are spraying their new leaves with the systemic weed killer and wear the appropriate PPE to prevent contact with you. 👍
👍🇲🇦
Thanks 😁👍
Thats the first time, pruning has made sense to me. What if the tree has never been pruned?? Its 4 meters high AND wide. would it be too savage to cut 1.5 meters of the top? Thanks
Thanks for the comment really glad this helped you. Absolutely if you do it while it's dormant you can reduce the height dramatically. Make sure to keep the main branch structure so you can develop your spur network on them so the fruit is close to and can be held by the strong branches. I would recommend a follow up summer prune as after a hard prune you will get a lot of leafy growth and water shoots. I have two videos on summer pruning apple trees that may help you. 😁👍
@@gardenerstale thanks, the buds are forming early, so will have to wait till next winter. dang. :-)
is it too late once the buds start forming, to prune? The buds forming proves the sap is already getting active? Thanks in advance.
cute bamboo bro !!!
Thanks 😁👍
like i said just found your channel ,, and hope you keep up the great videos,, I just totally understand the way you explain how to do things , thankyou so much , its pleasing to just sit back and watch 👍👍👍👍
Hey Stevie that's really great thank you so much again for commenting it's so nice to hear such positive feedback. You are very welcome I do these videos to help people understand different tasks in the garden so I look forward to creating more content for you to enjoy and learn from. 😁👍
got to say my friend I've seen a lot of gardening information videos but yours is perfect for me , it's like having a thousand teachers tell you the same thing, but for some reason you only understand the way one of them presents it , well done and please please keep doing them , thankyou so much 👍👍
Hey Stevie thanks so much for your comment really do appreciate your very kind words it means a lot, I certainly will be continuing to produce gardening content. 😁👍
Can you cut the top of sea breeze bamboo while still shooting and it not kill the plant?
Hello, you can prune sea breeze bamboo, I wouldn't recommend cutting immature canes that are shooting as this can kill the canes you prune off, I only would advise cutting the mature canes that have hardened. Hope this helps 👍
Great Video, thank you very much! Answered all my questions.
Thanks for the comment Gordon I am really glad this helped 😁👍
Standing on the top rung of that ladder was no mean feat. You are a braver man than I. Bravo!
Thanks for the comment it's definitely easier as the hedge is tall so you have something to hold onto but certainly wouldn't recommend it! 👍
This was posted Aug 1st, is that the day you performed the summer pruning?
Hey Jeff thanks for the comment, I summer pruned this apple tree on the week of the 22nd of July as it was ready to be done. However I do have other apple trees I haven't pruned yet as this prune can be done throughout August as well. The key sign to look for is the majority of the trees leaf tips have hardened so it doesn't put on extra foliage growth after the prune. 👍
Do you ever get tennis elbow trimming
Hey Teddy good question, I have had it in the past from doing a lot of garden clearing jobs where you are grabbing, pulling and digging out weeds, shrubs and trees and doing lots of heavy cut backs. Since then I try to vary my gardening jobs each day or week so am not putting constant strain and stress on the same part of my body. So one day hedge cutting the next hand shearing you use different muscles and tendons with these two tasks, there will be some cross over but the best thing is not to be tense when you work don't hold the tool really tight be relaxed in the arms and hands then it becomes more effortless. Hope this helps 👍
Good work mate
Thanks Teddy much appreciated 👍
Our neighbors in back of us across the soft alley let their bamboo get out of hand. It spread into their neighbors yard, across a soft alley and into our yard and our neighbors yard. My wife and I had enough, we read up and fund if you cut it low and immediately spray heavy duty round up into the bamboo stalk as the sap brings the poison into the root. So we cut and sprayed hundreds of stalks and that knocked it out of our yard back into the soft alley. That was 15 years ago. every other year we have to repeat as the neighbors across that alley do nothing. One year the electric lines running through the bamboo failed and arced and the sparks started a huge fire. A house almost burned down because of this. First neighbor, original planter was sued and removed all their bamboo but their neighbor went free of having to remove the hundreds of stalks which are once again into the soft alley. At 70 years of age I am about done with digging and cutting and the removal of dead, cut stalks. so if you see it, get it early. If we had seen the bamboo and knew what we know now I would never have bought this house.
Hello, thank you for commenting and sharing your experience with bamboo, do you know what variety it was? Very sorry to hear that story it's a shame when gardens and certain plants are not given the respect and care they need as situations like this can happen.
Many thanks for this practical advice
Hey Chris thanks very much for the comment your most welcome 😁👍
