HOW TO REPLACE RADIATORS & HOSES - GL1500 HONDA GOLDWING 1988-2000
This is a step-by-step video detailing how we removed and replaced the radiators and hoses on my dad’s 4th Generation Honda Goldwing (Gold Wing) Trike but could also work for a motorcycle as well.
His bike had a leak somewhere within the radiators or the hoses. Because of the fairing and how much stuff is packed into it, it is pretty much impossible to diagnose without taking everything apart. Being that the bike is practically 30 years old, we thought that it would probably be a good idea to replace the hoses and radiators even if they didn’t need it, since we were in there.
Includes years 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000. This video also includes how we drain the coolant, remove the grill, side marker lights, trim and lower fairing.

How I built this covered front porch
มุมมอง 2238 หลายเดือนก่อน
Living in Northern Minnesota, it’s all about battling the elements. I was tired of using my screen door as a snowplow to get out of my house during the snowy winter mornings, and also walking through a waterfall each time we go in and out of the house when it is raining. The previous owners built this deck and added a pergola. Not sure why they built the pergola, as it didn’t serve much purpose...

I was confused on what shocks to install on my Motor Trike 2000 Goldwing and I found your channel. Thank you so much for doing this video.
I’m so glad to hear this. Thank you for sharing!! Ride safe!!
Tip use little bit of grease on the o-ring to hold it in place.
Thank you for the tip!! Ride safe!!
I have a motorcycle just like yours and I’m trying to find a cover. I’ve been online but no luck. Do you know where I can find one?
Thanks for asking. We’re no help as my dad does not have a cover. I would suggest joining a goldwing trike group or two and creating a post asking the same thing. Wish I could be more help. Good luck and ride safe!!
Smaller gloves would help tremendously 😅
Completely agree. Thanks for watching. Ride safe!!
Thanks guys. With this video I was able to install new seals, bushes, oil, and new springs to my 89' model. Again thank you ! Today there are almost no garages whom want to book in a GL, and who does, wants your kidneys and liver to do the job.
Thank you for sharing. It’s messages like yours that make all the hours of putting together the video worth it. I’m super glad it helped!! Ride safe!!
Did you add air to the forks
Also great video
We did add about 5-6 pounds of air. It took very little. I believe the manual mentioned it too. Thank you for asking and watching. Ride Safe!!
Thank You!
You're welcome! Ride Safe!
Большое спасибо за видео. На родном языке наити не смог но и на английском всë достаточно понятно
I’m happy you were able to understand even though it wasn’t in your language. Thank you for watching. Ride safe!!
This is a great video thanks for posting! Did a coolant flush on my 1995 Sl 1500 and now am getting a small drip from the front cover. What I read on blogs could be a hose up behind the radiators. This will be a huge help in getting behind the radiators to see where it might be.
Thank you for watching. I’m curious to hear where the leak is coming from once you get it apart. I’m wondering if it is coming from the same area we had found. Another viewer suggested that we replace the thermostat while in there too. I wish we would have thought of that while we had it apart. Anyhow, good luck and nice back together, Ride Safe!!
This video gave me the confidence to do the job on my 89 aspencade. Much appreciated
That is awesome to hear. Thank you for finding it and watching. You got this!! Ride Safe!!
What model tire did you guys buy.
Thanks for reaching out. Tire is a Bridgestone Battlax BT46, Size 130/70-18M/C 63H. Hope that helps. Ride Safe!
Brake cable replacement front?
We didn’t replace the brake cable so I don’t have a video on it. Sorry about that. Thank you for watching. Ride safe.
Should’ve got the thermostat while being in that deep.
We didn’t even think of it. Thank you for sharing. Hopefully others will see this comment. Ride safe!!
Great video this will help me a lot
That is great to hear. Thank you for watching and ride safe!!
May I ask where you got your radiators or who did you order them from? I am going to replace mine
I’ll check with my dad and see who on eBay he ordered them from.
@@whatsbryanupto Thank you so much
The seller on EBAY is: newautoparts5 I don't see that he has anymore on his site for the GL1500. You may reach out to him and ask. Hope that helps.
I have a 1996 with leaks as well... do you have links to the places you went to for parts (other than ebay). Also, the video didn't show how you actually got the port side fan out. How'd y'all do that?
Hi Mark. Thanks for watching the video and also reaching out. Yes, getting that port/driver side fan out was quite the chore. I went back into my videos and I have about 20 min of us struggling with it until I just put the camera down and used 4 hands and screw drivers to pry and wiggle it out. It was not an easy job to do, just unclipping the wire harness at the top of the fan housing was difficult. It took patients for sure. If you can get it popped out of that grommet in the rear of it and wedge it past the wires above to the right and wires down the frame tube to the left you should eventually get it out of there. It's just as much of a chore getting it back in. :-) It might be easier to remove the radiator if you can first. But, you'd have to decide to sacrifice the upper hoses, because you'd likely not be able to loosen the clamps and would likely have to cut the hoses. As for where to purchase, here's the links for Ziegler Motorsports and Cycle Parts Nation. When you click on the link to parts at the Ziegler Motorsports site, it directs you to Cycle Parts Nation. Then just follow the links to Honda and your specific year, model and parts. www.zeiglermotorsports.com/ www.cyclepartsnation.com/ Hope this is helpful!! Good luck, and if you get a chance, let me know how it goes. Ride Safe!! Bryan
Great video,thanks.
Thank you for watching. Ride safe!
Update for the shocks. We have a straight axil trike and thus 444 shocks wouldnt be able to properly damped like on an independent trike. We did go with 13.5 inch heavy duty 412 shocks. Not the cruiser model you have. (The shocks we got were made for a triumph). But the ride has been drastically improved for us. No longer have air but I’ve personally have never been a fan of air shocks. Hope everything with your trike goes well
Thanks for the info and watching. We’re just now coming out of the snow season and hopefully have a ride coming up soon. Because of the winter we haven’t had a chance to check it out to enjoy the fruits of our labor. Ride safe!!
Do you guys ever rebuild for someone else if we take them off and send them to you. Would love to find someone to do it as thorough as you guys do
Thank you for watching. We don’t rebuild any other than our own, but we do appreciate you asking. Hope you do find some place that will do it. Ride safe.
@whatsbryanupto o well I tried. Thanks
Hello, did they remove them for maintenance or was something bad happening?
Thank you for watching. We noticed a leak after running it but because of everything you have to take off to see where the leak is we decided to swap for new parts while in there. Glad you enjoyed. Subscribe for other videos. Ride safe!!
Very impressive work good sirs. I hope I never have to replace mine but if I do, this is gold. Cheers.
Thank you for watching. I do understand. It was a ton of work but well worth the effort. I’m glad you enjoyed the video as it was fun to do with my dad. Subscribe to find my other videos working on his bike, if you haven’t already. Ride Safe!!
Thanks for your video! It gave me the info and courage to proceed with the daunting disassembly task. I've just finished installing the new screen from Tanin. I bought the bulb as well, but am unsure as to where the two smaller ones go. The larger bulbs are the 3.4W of which there are only 4, so those are obvious. Can you shed some light on what the wattage is for the two smaller included bulbs is and where they go? Thanks again!
Hi there. Thank you for the kind words and I'm pleased to hear that my video helped you. I couldn't remember exactly where the bulbs went, but I was able to Google "1995 Goldwing Dash Lights" and saw a few sites like Ebay where they show the bulbs and approximate locations. The comments box won't let me copy a screenshot of it into this thread. I'll do my best to explain it. 4 big bulbs go (@ 30 mph, @ 130 mph, @ 0 RPM, @ 4500 RPM) the two smaller bulbs go direct center of instrument cluster, 1 bulb above LCD and 1 bulb below LCD. I'm not sure of the wattage for the bulbs. Again, thanks again for the comments and watching. Great work taking on the task!! Ride Safe!!
Would have been nice to see how the cables actually pulled out of the hand control housing.
Thank you for watching. I hope it was helpful.
I have a 2000 GL 1500A. What brake pads do you recommend? The trike kit is a Tri-King. Do you have any information where to get parts for it? The company went out of business in Florida.
Hi. I chatted with my dad about this. The front brake pads are going to be available online. You can order from the Honda website or after market supplier and that’s who he ordered from. They are all different prices. If you’re asking about the rear axle, it should say the manufacturer, and should be able to order per the manufacturer. On his trike, his rear axle is a Ford. Hope that helps some. I do appreciate you watching. Ride Safe!!
You rock Bryan!
Thank you. Glad it helped.
Nice job, Bryan. Love seeing you do stuff. You do a really nice job. Hugs to you and your Dad. 😊
Thank you for watching and the kind comment!! It’s fun doing projects with him. Hugs to you too!!
How’s the ride? Got a gl1500 trike that has blown airshocks and am thinking of putting the 444 series 13inch heavy duty shocks on. Its a straight axil
We’re in the middle of winter here in northern Minnesota, so no riding yet. We anticipate it will ride better than before. You'll have to let us know how it turns out if you decide to put the 444 series on your trike. I just uploaded another video yesterday where we replace the air springs as well. That might be of use to you when making your decision. Hope all goes well. If you haven't subscribed, you should as I have more videos coming with work we've done on my dad trike, but also quite a few we've done already. Thank you for watching and the comment, it's much appreciated. Ride Safe!!
Good video
Glad you enjoyed. It was fun making it with you.
Pleasure to ride. Pain in the ass to work on.
I have a 19 wing Have similar Jack and can NOT find a way to jack it up without using the exhaust. Is there ANYONE that can show me how to lift a 2019 Goldwing Tour? Please
Unfortunately I don’t have any experience with a 2019. Maybe find somebody on YT that has videos of one and maybe they could help. Hope you find your answer. Ride Safe!!
Thank you so much for the video it really helped me decide on what jack to buy I am 72 and didn't want to be lying on the floor to be working on my 2000 Goldwing Trevor
You are so welcome! Ride Safe!!
Thank you!! Just got my 22 Outback Wilderness and this was driving me crazy.
Glad it helped!
Haha! Im sitting in my 2022 Outback Wilderness right now and yup, fixed it!
Nice content! I just picked up an GL1500 so I enjoy watching videos like this. Thanks.
Awesome, I’m glad you watched. My dad and i will be working in this same GL1500 next week, replacing the timing belt, radiators and the rear air shocks. Keep an eye out for those videos over the next few weeks. Ride Safe!!!
@@whatsbryanupto Great. I picked up an 94 with 100k but seems to have promise that it could be a decent and reliable machine. I have no interest in long distance riding but just getting it back on the road. I just did the timing belts. Previous owner deleted the air suspension. Seeing that I got it in the winter I've only put about 2 miles on it to make sure the wheels didn't fall off! So I'm just cleaning it and doing basic maintenance before I hit the road and see what else it may need. I'll look forward to more of your GL1500 and GL1800 content!
Do you wrestle bears in the wood for fun? Man you are a brave one.
That’s funny. lol. Thank you for watching. Ride safe!
At the 1:33:07 mark in the video you torqued the handlebar clamps on the wrong order!! Honda states that the bolts closest to the front of the vehicle must be torqued 1st! Then the rearward ones to be torqued. It has to do with the design of the clamps and the way they are manufactured (the" arrow" or "F" must face front) it leaves a larger gap to the rear and makes for a better "clamping force" . That's one of the things they teach you at the Factory Honda Training center that I attended many years ago. This may help folks from cracking those clamp tops in half!! Same thing applies to clutch and brake perches - there is a proper sequence for tightening them (bigger gap toward the bottom)
Thank you for watching and catching this detail. I was not aware of this. Sounds like the training you received for Honda was very valuable. Your comments are much appreciated. Ride safe!!
at 44:24 not 42:49, sorry
Thanks
at 42:49 in the video you mentioned - after 50 tries it finally stayed! I dab small amounts of grease in the groove to hold the o-ring in place, this works real well
I wish we would have thought of that. Thank you.
Why remove the front fender trim?? No need to
Thought we needed to, thank you.
the handlebar bolts are 8mm (actually 8x1.25) a 12mm wrench fits the head - but they really are an 8mm bolt
Thank you again for your comments. Your attention to detail is impressive.

Where are you getting new replacement LCD screen for 1500 GW? Installing not a problem, but finding new parts for old gl1500s?

@@whatsbryanupto thank you so much for information on parts for GL 1500 GW. Do you know the meaning of GL in GL1500? "Grand Luxury"! They do live up to they name, they are Grand an they are luxurious! For your comparison,I bought my 88' GW during covid lockdown for $1800. It was showroom ready with new tire, better suspension, airbrush paint scene on the luggage boxes! Only problem now is biden's inflated cost of fuel at $6 here in Washington State. I can't enjoy being hammered on fuel prices to entertain myself!?

Good video. Going to have to fix my 06 cruise. Maybe contact cleaner...or maybe i have to take apart. Curious though, why the gloves? They seem to make it more difficult. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to make the video.
Thanks for watching. I agree, no gloves needed, and they are poor fitting as well, which didn’t help. I think when I started the project, I thought it would be messier or something. I hope the video was helpful and the gloves not too distracting. Good luck!! 🙂 Ride Safe!!

@@matthewhoopes4440 sorry to hear about the contact cleaner, I do hope you got it working again without any issues.

Hi can you lift the trike completely off the floor with your lift and if so could you do a video
Hi, yes the atv floor jack in the video is able to completely lift the trike off the floor. The jack has to be placed exactly in the center. It may take several tries to find the center. This is my dad’s trike and is now in storage for the winter. We do plan to get it out in the next couple months to change the timing belt and replace the radiators and hoses. I’ll try to include lifting it when taking it out of storage. Hope that helps. Keep an eye out for upcoming videos.
