I built a 1998 GMC Safari into the a lifted, 4x4 swapped, lean, mean, overlanding machine. I am taking that all over BC and Alberta, doing adventures, and then taking over the world. Hiking, canoeing, eating, vanlifing, I'm doing it all! This is going to grow into the greatest vanlife channel of all time. Don't believe me? Just watch me(and like and subscribe).

Exploring An Island Of Bison - Elk Island National Park Vanlife
This episode is a continuation of my ultimate summer adventure vanlife road trip, and I'm in Elk Island National Park. Just outside of Edmonton Alberta, Elk Island is home to many different species of wildlife species, but the one I'm most interested in is Bison. This video basically covers my quest to find Bison, which after totally striking out on day one, I succeeded on day 2. On day one I hiked the 15 plus kilometers of the Tawayik Lake trail, but didn't see anything. It was probably too hot, and too late in the day for Bison to be out roaming. I did see a ton of Bison sign on this trail, from an enormous amount of poop, to pathways, to bison wallows, there was sign all over. I just couldn't find any actual bison. At least the trail was interesting. I say interesting because while it wasn't spectacular or anything like that, it was interesting because it was just so different than what I am used to. Small birch treed forests, dispersed in large open grass lands, shallow lakes, and the total absence of rocks. The prairies are a strange place...
After striking out on day on day one, I headed back to the campsite to make dinner. I made canaloni with Italian sausage and garlic bread, because nothing eases the pain of failure like garlic bread. Then after dinner I walked from camp down to Astotin lake, where I was able to sit on the beach and take in an absolutely stunning sunset. The sunsets here were amazing, and they are worth the visit themselves. I did still have bigger plans though, I still want to see some bison. I woke up early on day 2 with a new plan, I was going to head to the bison loop road. I was told by the park Rangers that the bison loop road was a great place to see bison, so that was plan A. Although today, I got lucky. On my way to the bison loop, I saw at least 6 bison on the side of the road driving down. It was magical. By the time I had gotten to the bison loop, my luck had ran out, and there was no more bison to be seen. I eventually decided that I needed to head south of highway 16 to the wood bison trail. The wood bison is a totally separate species of bison, and they are kept in a separate part of the park. I talk about this in the video, and I do see both types. The plains bison in the main part of the park, and the bigger and heavier wood bison down south. On my quest to see wood bison, I hiked down the wood bison trail. This trail is similar to the one I had hiked the day before, but also noticeably different. The forest was more dense and foresty, and the grasslands weren't as open. At least the part that I saw. I didn't hike the whole trail, because I didn't want to, but also because I didn't have to. As I got close to the point I was going give up and turn around, a noise in the bush ahead of me startled me. And there it was, and herd of bison on the crossing the trail. I ended up seeing about a dozen wood bison on this trail, at it was absolutely awesome. It was cool to see bison from the car, but getting to see them of foot in their real habitat, was exactly what I was looking to do on this trip. With my mission here accomplished, and my heard full, I wrapped up the video and now I'm heading to Saskatchewan.
In my next video, I'll be in Saskatchewan continuing on my big summer road trip. I think I'll be doing some canoeing, some hiking, and who knows what else. It's only getting more exciting from here. If you like this video, you'll might like this one here where I canoe and camp at the historic Yellowhead Lake - th-cam.com/video/7uPknfLkUAY/w-d-xo.html

Sarge, I'm digging the cowboy 🤠 hat bub! It's you, man! Don't ditch it. This video is here again impressive and very well put together, and the voice-over was awesome information. Bro, keep it up! I'm proud of you, man! As Sly Stallone would say, "Keep punching !"🥊
Thank you, but I'm not 100% sure if I'll be wearing that cowboy hat anyway more😂,
@SARGEinc 😃👍🏻
van life is youtube's theme of the day!.
I think it's a sign that you need more vanlife
as much as I love animals, Bison is delicious! happy trails my dude!
I'm not a opposed to eating bison, But bison are sweet!
My gut tells me this is going to be a highly successful channel down the road. You just get the sense that is coming for Sarge. Loved this one. Can’t wait for the next.
Thank you, I appreciate that. I too feel like it'll be big one day, hopefully soon😂
Good on ya for your bison sightings. Ah, Alberta...it's a province, I guess. I once was in a brown rain storm outside Edmonton - brown f^ckin rain! You nailed it: grass and dirt. Cheers
Dang that's crazy, I never heard of brown rain before. I found Alberta pretty wild, once you get past the rockies, it felt like a whole different world.
If you start a product store you could sell a line of camp food and name your signature spaghetti sauce Slo-Mo.
Now there's an idea! One day when I I own my own spaghetti sauce empire, I'll remember this comment as I dive into my pile of money😂
Nice stuff
Thanks, Frank!
That Cowboy Hat suits you Sarge 🙂
Thanks! But I'm not 100% sure I wear it again, but it will always be my lucky bison hat lol
Watching your hike to see Bison I can plainly see signs of Sasquatch. Also, love the shower buffalo. LOL
Glad to see you made your van life influencer dream a reality! Enjoy the adventures!
I'm only an influencer once I make enough money to survive, but thank you. I appreciate it.
Awesome display! Love it!
Thank you
How do you stake down your blowmolds? Could you make a video about it? I need ideas! :)
Have things staked down different ways. Some are staked with wooden stakes with a screw though it, some are held against a metal stake with metal strapping. I will be making another video of my Christmas display this year, so maybe I'll put more focus on how I actually set it up.
Best thumbnail ever!!!!!!
I know, I just wish I didn't screw up the livestream by doing it sideways😂
List your PO Box so we can send you Christmas presents and gift cards!
I don't have a PO box and I don't think I should list my address on here, but if you want to send me something I can provide my address
The butterflies are licking up salt crystals
This is good to know, I had no idea they did this. I also realize that I don't know anything about butterflies at all.
Beaver..... don't even get me started dude. LOL!!!
Beavers are awesome. Imagine being able to bite down a whole tree, wild!
Dude, you're sideways! That makes me feel so much better about me screwing up. It is very educational with regards to campfire firestarter and in case I ever do a live, I have learned something important watching this so its all good! Also, your wild and crazy hair just adds to your character and you are funny and the wild hair is just so right for you. If you must, just trim your hair and you can have the bangs just come to your eyebrows LOL like mine. heh heh heh You are awesome 😊
Not sure if I am just really stoned or not but think you are sideways
You might be stoned but I definitely fucked this livestream up.
next time you're crossing alerta, check out "nojack campground" its about 1.5hrs outside of Edmonton, but it's always totally empty!! it's wicked cheap, too. the entire time I was there the only other person I saw was the camp owners coming to check on things. I ended up driving back and fourth from this place when I went to see my dad in the hospital in Edmonton because I'm way too cheap for a hotel and my sister advised me not to park my van basically anywhere downtown Edmonton at night unless I wanted a break in
It was still fun bro! I'm learning from ya myself. Gotta learn how to do voice over and find the best app on my android Samsung ultra 24. But seriously it was fun and genuine bub! 😂
For my voice over, I have a simple wired lav mic and an adapter that turns it's headphone jack into a USB-C that plugs into my phone/Tablet. It's pretty ghetto, but it works alright. When I do the livestreams I use the same adapter but have a different style mic that plugs in and I sit it next to my phone. There's definitely better ways to do this stuff, but I'm not very technically savvy and I keep it super simple.
@SARGEinc thanks, man. I appreciate the information. This will help.
@thommyoveralls5390 And on power director there's a button that says "voice over" and you record right in the editing software
@SARGEinc power director and app for smart phone or tablet, or laptop 💻?
@thommyoveralls5390 I use it on my tablet and phone. There's a free version you can try, but now I pay like $100 a year for it
The inside of that van looks claustrophobic how do you sleep in that?. What software do you use for editing?
It's definitely pretty tight back there. That's the biggest problem with these vans, they are actually pretty small. I tried to build it maximizing the height but also having functional storage underneath the bed. I don't find it bad for sleeping, but if you're doing anything else back it feels a lot tighter. I edit with power director from cyberlink, and I do it all on a Samsung tablet. I definitely don't think it's the best system, but I really have no idea what I'm doing😅
@@SARGEinc You don't at least have a laptop to edit on?. You're quite self reliant then, you weld and build stuff!.
@colintaylor3303 I haven't used a real computer in like 10 years. I'm not very tech savy. I can do basic stuff, but I'm definitely way behind technology wise.
I know I’m late but I have a nativity scene and a Santa and a snowman your collection is awesome
Thanks! You're kind of late for last Christmas, but you're a little early for this one. So it all depends on how you think about it. I actually added a nativity scene to my collection this year. I found a really good deal on one in the summer. Mary, Joseph, 3 wise men, a Shepard, some animals, and it even came with an angel, some LED Palm trees, and a plywood building frame for it sit infront of. I'm pretty excited for this years display.
@ I use 3 pallets and a big stakes and then a tarp on top. My angle got stolen in the early 2000s kids would come and steal stuff and I belive that was one that never got returned but I have the North Star so that’s good and the only box I’m missing is Mary Joseph and baby Jesus’s box but I’m planning on getting a new angle and rewiring my North Star it kelps short cicuriting
@KeithMelps That's dope. I grew up in a crazy Christmas light house, and we definitely had a few things stolen by kids in the 2000s too. One night someone just came by and cut a whole bunch of stands of lights for no good reason, and my dad said fuck it and took everything down. He stopped doing a big display for like 10 or 15 years, but now that he moved away and retired, he's gotten back into it.
Wet beavers ?
Sometimes that's what you start looking for when you're by yourself living in a van😂
Awesome adventure Sarge..Great vid..loved the beaver boardwalk..looking forward..as allways..to the next one. Cheers bud.
Thanks man!
I camped in that Walmart parking lot. That's the one that has a massive dump truck parked out back as some sort of display. I think I even ate at that steakhouse. I give it 4 out of 5 stars for Walmart parking lots. Good food, plenty of room to park, good area outback to walk the dogs, close to Jasper and the bathroom in Walmart was an excellent place to poop.
It's definitely a sweet Walmart. I'll probably camp there again, quite possibly the next time I'm in Jasper. It has everything you need, and it's free. What a deal!
Gonna have to agree with Frank. Despite the shitty fires in Jasper - the Rockies are just fucking ridiculous, visually. Tacos looked bueno. And hey, Sarge, being a Fraser Valley guy - you can't call THAT rain. 😃 Cheers
I agree with the point about the rockies. I'm used to seeing mountains, but the rockies absolutely hit different. As for the rain, I definitely think I'm getting soft. I was actually laying the groundwork to bail on a camping trip this weekend because of the potential of rain. I just think I spoiled myself by camping so much in great weather, it's hard to bring myself to get out there in the rain😂
Great video Sarge. What a shame in Jasper it sure looks different than the last time i was there -also there used to be herds of Elk and other wildlife all along the highway,so sad. Looking forward to your next video :-)
It is crazy how much different it is. I'll have a video come out in a couple of months where I go back into Jasper to really check it out. It'll be pretty wild. That time I do see a herd of elk on the highway, nature always finds a way. Ultimately Jasper has been changed forever, but stuff will regrow, and it will be still be a beautiful place.
Pretty cool park, some people say beavers are super destructive but thats pretty one sided, they are a keystone, species and they build habitat for many other species, I wonder how many times you said walmart parking lot in this video lol, good one
Pros and cons, but it's pretty wild what Beavers can do to a landscape. People get upset because they build dams which flood their land, but on the other hand, beavers can build their own lakes which can keep land irrigated. So it all depends on if you're inconvenienced by them or not. I've watched many videos on TH-cam about people trying to stave off desrtification by building artificial beaver dams on creeks. Also it's just crazy to imagine being able to bite down a literal tree. Beavers are a pretty crazy animal when you think about it.
@@SARGEinc Ya its pretty cool to watch videos of them chewing down trees. There are some places too where people are reintroducing beavers to allow them to naturally rebuild the eco systems
Great footage of the lake! On the same side of the lake near the east end is a set of waterfalls that you can see from the highway. Additionally once you get back on the highway and headed west, the next pullover on the right side near the west end of the lake has a water pipe sticking out of the side of the mountain. I frequently see people filling up jugs of water from there... Then if you keep heading west to Rearguard falls, come late August and September that is where the salmon finish their swim up river to spawn. Quite an amazing journey for them!
That's awesome. I don't remember the waterfall, and I kind of think I actually saw people getting water but I didn't know what was going on. I did see Rearguard Falls on my way here, it was awesome, but I was too early to see the salmon. I actually would like to go back there and see them when they are running. It's a beautiful place up there and I'll almost certainly be back. Maybe even next year if they actually open the Berg Lake trail.
You need a harvester dude. 😅 John Deere.
😂
LOL!! Nobody here will ever like Revelstoke!
LOVE IT! YOU ARE HILARIOUS! That sounds like something I would do.
I did it a lot. It's definitely the move lol
I live in clearwater and did this same hike to moul falls this summer, its rough goin out for sure haha. 86 stairs i counted
If you go back to clearwater next summer hit me up, might be able to show you some secret spots :)
Dang, I'm intrigued by these secret spots... It's still too early to think about next summer, but if I have it my way I'm driving across Canada!
I'm nearing the end and install of NP246. What did you end up doing with your NP233 and the stabilizer bar that bolts from the area of the front drive shaft output of the side of transfer case to the bellhousing? Were you able to reuse the OEM support bar off of the NV136?
No I just left it off and recycled it.
Wow yeah being from Chilliwack What a change the water is so beautiful there 👍
It's wild!
Anyways 😂 I was originally the first viewer when ya dropped it.. but I got sidetracked helping my mom . Then came back. I'm now like 200 something 😅😂 Anyways I enjoyed another getaway of beautiful sceneries in your video, buddy! Thanks for killing it again on Creativeness 📽🎬🛶🏞
Thanks man, and I believe you that you were first. The first one to watch and the first one to turn it off😂
@SARGEinc 🤪😜🤣🤣!! Here's a cup of coffee ☕️ for a thought. [ me daydreaming again] on your travels on the lake, what if you put a 10×10 lowes or Home Depot tiny garage on a pad [ obviously buying a small portion * cough ,cough Mum & Dad & patreons ] of land and beef it up for all weather purposes. So you have a place to camp, rest etc. Like them log cabin you came across. That be, cool. Or coleslaw tiny pop-ups and convert it into permanently erect stand-up camper like on YT. Ok. I'm done drinking my cup.Lol Lol 😆
* Coleman used camper, not coleslaw 🥗
Great video Sarge, what a beautiful spot!
Thank you, I agree!
Well said and with knowledgeable passion. Good Ol' BC Boy 🙂
Thank you!
Wow, when you started out this video before getting in the water I was thinking meh this lake kind of looks like a pass, "Anyways" it didn't take long for the scenery to become quite epic, the water color and reflections are stunning, I'm going to have to get there one day
The start is definitely not ideal. I actually moved down from the rest stop start because it was even more chaotic. It's a super popular rest stop, so there's a constant stream of cars pulling in and out to use the bathroom or take selfies. It would actually be nice if they built a bigger and better access point somewhere. I don't know if that's even possible because it's all close to the highway/railway, but it would be nice to have a calmer place to start.
I'll have to put this one on my list... It looks amazing... Because of you, you have peeked my interest in doing overnight paddles... I'm slowly gathering my supplies to do so... Thanks for sharing your adventures...
I'm definitely pro overnight paddles. It's an awesome way to get to camp because you can really pack as much stuff as you want, and you don't really have to worry about the weight. You can really cover a lot of water if you don't have to go out and comeback in the same day.
Unbelievable blue, eh? Awesome paddling conditions! Cheers
I agree, it was a pretty wild color. It's interesting how many different colors water can be lol.
Now there's a tidbit I did not know...that the whole of the Fraser River has just that one Moose Lake! What a beauty of an area for sure!! So calm!! Sure was one great day and place for a paddle!!
likewise, I did not know that either!
I had no idea until I went there last year. I was looking it up because I thought it was the first lake on the Fraser, and that's when I realized it was the only lake on the Fraser. I had no idea before, but also I had never thought about it before lol
@@SARGEinc hahaha true.... I never thought about it either. But here we are... "anyways" lol
I know the parking lot... Never park across from houses... They are the ones who call to complain... Learned that from a by-laws guy...
I kind of knew this spot wasn't the right spot before I did it. I stayed there the year before and it was fine, but they probably had too many people doing it since then. I'll definitely be more stealthy next time, sometimes you need something like this because you get complacement. I had this and one window knock in my 2 summers, and both spots I kind of knew I shouldn't of done it.
@SARGEinc You do get the feels when you know it's not the right spot... I've been lucky... Only one knock in the 4 1/2 years full-time... It wouldn't have happened if I had left earlier than my norm...
Where is your next video? I love your videos!!!! You are so funny and your vlogs are so well produced and interesting and addictive.
It comes out at 4 today
