Hollcana Farm
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 8 ก.ย. 2023
Hollcana Farm is a family operated, 50 cow dairy herd in Ontario, Canada. This farm was started in 1960 by John Sr. and his wife Johanna who immigrated from Holland in 1954. It is now operated by their son Ron, his wife Debra and their son John Jr. with his wife Melynda. Their other son Jasper also works part time on the farm.
The farm has all registered Holstein cows that are raised on the farm and are milked in a tie stall, hip roof, bank barn. We try to grow most of our feed for the cows and also sell some crops.

Wonderful video today!.... As I have been following You for a while now and watching things change to this new 21st century robotic dairy farm, I have noticed a few things. Almost everything you did in the old barn from chucking feed through the whole in the floor to how you would simply have a start time and go cow to cow with your milking has changed a great deal. You are right in that now you more Manage your herd in this new robotic dairy. I think the amount of information you now have for each cow down to the time they milk, how much milk they give at each milking, there overall health you now have at your fingertips is truly amazing, So Yes your are more better Managers of the herd than labourers who show up to feed or milk them each day. Your herd sure is relaxed in the new barn as you walked through all of them looking for whisper they barely seemed worried as you approached them. You are also much more technical now as you have all of these new alarms, records, health advisories at your fingertips and on your phone. A couple of videos ago You showed us all how you had to do everything in paper books and draw the cows markings (which were amazing BTW) to now using your phone to take pictures instead and upload the information into the needed computer files. You have Your Dry cows close to the milkers and seem to have a better handle on all of them being so close in the new barn. Using the TMR in the feed alley seems to provide a much better feeding system than the old way and with your Juno and Collector pushing up the feed and cleaning up much of the manure seems much better than the old way in the old barn with your gutters. It makes me smile here as I watch all of Your videos how much has truly changed over the last year or so. It is easy to see that Yes your roles are changing more to managing Your herd these days but it also seems that you now have much more information on how each of the herd is doing and feeling and yes how a simple issue with the robotic affects everything now. Most likely in the old barn if a milker stopped working you would do what you had to too get it working quickly again without ever thinking of how that breakdown affected the whole herd dynamics as you now can see in the new barn operation. The Girls seem very happy in their new barn and seem to be adjusting nicely to their new way of life. Keep up the good work!....... and the videos coming, and as always THANK YOU for bringing us along on your journeys........
@@allendavidson6608 As always you have sent an encouraging and well thought out comment! I really appreciate it!!
Bravo…. awesome video.. Small operation farmers are the most independent people I know. I recall the old saying a farmer can fix almost anything with a hammer, vice grips and wire. Not the case today with the technology we have. When I saw the milking cups not aligning with the wash station, and a restart fixed it temporally, kind of told me you had some sort of slippage or the motor was not being driven properly. Unlike a cow the wash station is stationary and there should be some form of sensor / feedback to indicate the milker is in the correct position and flagged a warning or error code. Lely should take this as an opportunity for improvement. Reading through the comments it sounds like you did your homework and chose the system that works for you, with one for the key factors being customer support. You mentioned in the Video the cows were impacted, quality of the milk and feeding was impacted. I assume the Lely detected the quality and milking issues. Kind of cool it picked up on this and give you feedback. Your video nailed , as independent as farmers are, they need to take advantage of customer support 24-7, holidays are no exception. , and you can collectively decide if they need to dispatch someone to come out. Small operation farmers are also the most community friendly and responsible people I know. If one of their neighbors or friends needs help, they are there in a heart beat, Lely or what ever company your using needs to do the same
@@ricks8158 Wow! Thank you for the amazing and encouraging comment!!
Waarom heb u niet gekozen voor een lely A5? De nieuwste technologie.
We thought we could save money this way and we were told that the used robot would be like new. We were also told that if they break they are easier to fix. Maybe we made a mistake?
Ik denk het niet hoor. In het begin altijd wel opstard problemen.
Yes, that is what they say but it I thought the tech problems would be over sooner and that it would just be the cows with taking longer to go on their own. I guess it makes sense though. Any machinery we buy, new or used, always needs the bugs worked out.@@DickvandenNoort
Quelle température fait il dans le bâtiment ? Qu est devenu votre ancienne grange? Bonne journée
It is -3°C sometimes it goes down to -5°C. The old barn is sitting empty. We hope to start renovating it for heifer calves this year. Merci!
Hm , you still learning, that show that the cows learning a little bit fäster than you do!😏
Seems like alot of problems with something that is new
@@Joe-ge3rf well, we did get a used robot. It was supposed to be all gone over though. Some things get wrecked in the start up because of so many cows getting trained. We are a bit frustrated though.
@HollcanaFarm makes a little more sense, didn't realize it was used.
Did you consider any other robot brands when you were in the planning stages
@Joe-ge3rf We did. There were reasons why we went with Lely. One of them being that there are many farms in our area that have them so we know we will get service. They have a really good name. We didn't like the milkers we had in the old barn from another company and didn't trust that their robot milker would be any better. Etc etc. it's always a gamble with farming 🥴
Great video!!
Do you get many robots calls throughout the day or night?
@@Justangs I think we have had 1 or 2 in the ight since we started and a few here and there during the day. Usually we know there is a problem already, like the hydro going out, or we had that the hot water wasn't working. Mostly we get alarms for a cow too long in the box which we can ignore. We know that cow, she is slow.
@ that ain’t bad. Yeah just being on call 24/7 is different, always milking.
I can’t believe how calm the cows got in a short time

Do you have animals in the old barn if so would like to see 😊
@@PaulWilcox-n2p No we don't. Not yet, we were hoping to have more free time to work on converting the old barn. The fall was busy getting used to the new barn and robot and now we are hit hard with winter. I will try to video the whole process.😊

Hello i found your channel two days ago and it really is very interesting.Did you see any difference in milk quantity? How many cows do you milk.Thank you
@@zedks4227 Welcome! We milk 51 cows right now. It was recommended to keep our numbers down till we have acclimated to the new barn and robot. We hope to increase over time to 60 cows. The milk quantity has gone up gradually since we started about 400L a pickup, I think.

How long does the calf stay with mom?
@@nobodyschwarz4513 A couple of days
Are most of the cows coming into the robot by themselves? They look like they were lined up waiting.
@@Ironvalleylarry tonight was an awesome night! No cows on the fetch list. We have a few awesome days and then a bad day mixed in now. Hopefully the bad days are further apart. It is pretty awesome to see them line up and push their way in.
Would you say the cows would be laying down more in sand bedding over manure solids which would lead to higher milk production?
@@Justangs The cows love the compost pack and lay down a lot and sleep deeply. If they were on sand they would have to lay on stalls and wouldn't be able to stretch out as much. It doesn't seem like manure solids when you are in it. It seems like a soft cushiony worked garden.
@@HollcanaFarm great video!
Another interesting video!! Thanks for sharing !
Are you guys going to be letting the cows out to pasture in the summer at all?
@@robertsummerville4561 not this year, we are hoping to get a handle on working with the robot before we add the difficult element of pasturing with a robot. Our heifers will still be pastured.
Is your old barn sitting empty
@@dawn20 yes, so sad! Hopefully we can start converting it for the calves this year.
Hello . Your method is very interesting. I have learned a lot. Thank you for sharing.
Why do you tag the bull calves?
@@patrickmorris3990 We have to. All animals have to be tagged. It all started with the BSE. We can't take any cow, calf or bull off the farm without tags even when they die and deadstock picks them up. It is in case of contamination, medicine mistakes, etc so they can trace it back to the original owner. When we buy the tags they are registered with our farm and location.
Really like the bed pack, but I could never tolerate that slop mess on the alley floors
@@steveketchum9836 Yes, it is worse than we thought it would be but they say the collector does a better job than scraper or skid steer. I just didn't realize it was going to be like this compared to the old barn and standing stalls. I guess we have to take the good with the bad. The cows are happy.
Is there a plan for the old milking barn ?
@@markweiler8172 Yes, we hope to convert it for raising heifer calves. Some single pens and some group pens. We thought we would have more time to work on that ourselves but so far not yet.
