What a wonderful interview. David and his wife Anna are so lovely. Thank you very much for sharing this piece of British film history.♥
I'm a few years late to chime in on this, so I don't know if you'll see this, but regarding the St. Paul's effect, it is very possible that it was done as a class painting in front of the camera, hence why it's in HD on the Blu-ray. It's a very old school effect to put a painting on glass in front of the camera, but it was still occasionally used in the 80s. Another detail that supports this is that the top of Roger Hammond's head briefly disappears behind the bottom of the cathedral, suggesting it was something in-camera and placed near the lens, rather than something masked out--which is possible, but seems an overly complicated solution for a relatively simple shot like this for a TV series in the 80s.
Just rewatched the first 15 episodes, on more than one occasion I was impressed by the shots done where you can see the reflection of a significant part of a scene in a mirror. Just beautiful
This is mesmerizing
Such a fascinating mind!
Middle class bores.
“Your conversation really is most entertaining. If you would, close the door . . . on your way out . . . as there is the DECIDED draft.”
Absolutely gutted I couldn't make it to this in person as I had a brain fever and I was confined to my rooms. 😊 Hope it's the first of many. Brettcons not brain fevers.
Great clip! Gutted I couldnt make Brettcon, hopefully next year ❤
7:00 such a wonderful story! That he got to enjoy the books from another POV
Nice! Thank you. And thanks for including a clip of the glass background from the episode.
Of course. I've always been fascinated with matte paintings. Neat to hear a little about them from the DP who shot for Peter Hammond.
Very nice, thanks!
You can shove it.
Well that escalated quickly.
I loved this interview. I’m so glad to know that Jeremy & Edward were such friends. I wonder who could have stabbed Jeremy in the back, though? That was upsetting to hear. What that poor, beautiful man endured in his last years. Love your channel/podcast! Thank you for all you guys do to keep JB’s legacy ongoing!
🤞🏻 for Damien Thomas: A Shelockian Conversation.🙂
Just discovered this channel. I’ve been a lifelong Jeremy Brett fan since watching the Sherlock Holmes series as a teenager. His portrayal of Sherlock Holmes was perfect.
So it wasn't just me who thought the adaption was...bleh 😭
Yet again, you’ve provided entertainment and new insights into this wonderful series. Like you, Holmes’ admonishment of Inspector Forbes is masterful and exhilarating. Love you podcast, thank you. (Just found it!)
"Good artists borrow, great artists steal ." Picasso
If there’s one thing more enjoyable than watching one of Brett’s Sherlock episodes, it’s listening to this podcast. So evocative and relaxing, and sensitively expressed.
Thank you for this - your thoughts add even more enjoyment to something already superb.
That was so touching, and revealing. And her laugh, my god! She's just so charming. (Age is just a number).
My partner of the time introduced me to Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes around the mid-90s. Despite the dodgy VHS tapes he had I could tell that the series was waaaay beyond the usual interpretation I’d seen. I later bought the boxed set and what joy to find such an exquisite set of programmes where every detail is respected. I found your podcast only a few weeks ago and would love to thank you for you for it. Your evident pleasure in all aspects of this magnificent Granada series means I’m going to need to watch them all again in tandem with listening to each of your podcasts. Thanks so much for the interviewsico, extras and tidbits which adds even more pleasure to each episode - truly the icing on an already wonderful cake!

The good news: BRETCONN! The bad news: I didn’t know about it (or the Podcast) until December 2024 😭
You guys have fooled me, a newbie Sherlockian (I had payed no attention to the captions) with that editing. I thought the series was new
Well, if this series is new to you... you're in for a real treat!
The person reading this has a boring voice or it's that DAMM AI crap I'm done
About Brett's stride and pacing. This production scrubbed the ritual anyway, to better fit the geography of the location, so they could just have easily adjusted the 'new' pacings to fit Brett's stride. So, for example 7x7 becomes 8x8.
Also, artist licence surely enables them to take harmless liberties with such things anyway. Nobody expects the location to literally match to the inch.
I've often wondered why at the end of the episode, when the clock strikes midnight on Christmas eve, Holmes and Watson are about to sit down for Christmas Dinner, a strange time to have it surely?
I always assumed it was because it kept getting put off. "Dinner became supper", but then they found their perp and time got away from them. Still gotta eat!
Most people sleepwalk through brilliance until centuries force them awake. They’d ignore Mr. Brett’s mastery now, but give it time. The decades will whisper his name in the same breath as DaVinci’s visions of invention, Jordan’s feats in sports, and Napoleon’s conquests. History loves to set the record straight.
I actually Love the Granada series more than the modern movie adaptions.
Then you're in the right place!
@sherlockpodcast Couldn't agree with you more. I watched them many times over the years. Great cast of Actors & Actresses all around, attention to detail is amazing.
Wonderful to be able to relive the event! Thank you very much! ❤
That was lovely. Well done, guys.
I am so enjoying hearing all these details and wishing I could have been there. THANK YOU!
Finally watching this. So wonderful to hear all of their stories. Thanks, Gus and Luke. Would have loved to have been there.
Glad we could finally share it! We'll get you to the next one! ;)
14:47 that longing moan from the crowd when The Notes appear 😭🤣 same, same
I was there and it was the best day of my life. Thank you so much to David, Gus and Luke?
We had a good time, didn't we!?
Thank you for this visit with six lovely people, four of whom I've known of for almost 40 years. It brings back such good memories of the fabulous work that was done on the Granada series--truly magical. As an aside, my thanks to Matthew Solon for giving me the word "moue" which applies to those subtle lip movements that Jeremy used to such good effect.
As 2024 winds down, with gratitude and a heavy heart, a sad farewell to Michael Culver ("Reginald Musgrave") and Michael Jayston ("John, the Earl of Rufton")...and I sincerely hope no others.
Thank you for this early Christmas present! I appreciate you guys putting this out for us fans especially considering how busy you are with your other projects. Merry Chrismas to you both and your team!
Thanks for sticking with us!
Thank you! I was there, on the front row (you can see the back of my head in several shots) and now I feel like I'm back there again. It was such a wonderful experience, a never to be forgotten day. Looking forward to seeing the other panels. Just brilliant.
Glad you were able to make it to there and now you have the proof! :) Thank you again for supporting this event.
Bravo!
Thank you so so much for organizing this event. Lovely to see all these great people and hear some insider stories. They are so lucky for working with Jeremy and all those amazing folks at Granada. And we are also lucky because they can share their treasured memories.
We're lucky we get to be the conduit. It's just as fun for us to watch.

I wish that they would have shown some old shots from the episodes that these actors were in so we could identify them from some of the scenes. I had to look up their names on Google to see them in their younger selves in the show. Still enjoyed listening to the podcast. I am a big fan of the Sherlock Holmes series and have watched them numerous times.
Most Excellent!, thank you Gentleman!.
Wonderful!
Michael Carter does not find this in the least bit amusing. He shall report this!
Then the Hound of Baskervilles ate him up this time.😅
OMG. To see these actors in their mature years and not recognizing them from their screen images years ago! Thanks for this podcast Luke and Gus.
