How to Grow Bitter Melon at Home in Containers | Easy to Set Up Trellis
Bitter melon is a vining plant that is grown for its nutritious yet bitter fruit in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The plant is widely distributed in Southeast Asia, India, the Caribbean, India, and Africa. Bitter gourd is known to have several health benefits including, 1) providing a good source of nutrients like potassium, vitamins A and C, and folate 2) possibly lowering blood sugar, 3) possibly decreasing cholesterol levels, and 4) providing a good source of fiber. In this video, I’ll show how to grow bitter melon at home, from collecting and germinating seeds, to planting in containers with an easy to set-up plant cage.

Homemade Vietnamese Sandwiches made with Leftovers & Fresh Garden Veggies

Bahn mi is a Vietnamese sandwich made on a crusty baguette typically filled with meat, chilies, pickled vegetables, mayo and cilantro. I (Ginger) wanted to repurpose leftover smoked ribs that Ryan made, while also using fresh vegetables from our garden! We had cilantro, perilla leaves, carrots and daikon radishes growing, perfect to put into the Bahn mi. I love being able to step out to the bac...

Thank you for the tip
You bet 👍🏼
It’s been a beautiful epiphyllum blooming season! Alas, it has come to an end. I want to send huge thanks to my hubby for making fantastic videos of the season! Wonderful sharing the pretty blooms and I will be enjoying all the videos during the off season!
It was fun documenting the beautiful blooms. The care you put into your epis really showed. Great job honey!
This was the very best birthday dinner anyone can have!! It was fantastic…so juicy and tender!!
Happy Birthday 🎈🎂🥳 Honey!
looks sooo good
They were, as you know 😉😊
looks soooo good omg
The fam loved them 👍🏼
This video making me hungry . Yummy
😆 Thanks for watching 🤙🏼
I have no time for all that they go straight from the water to the grill right away on the beach specially at the dunes I'm all in. Thanks for the tip.tho
Sounds good 👍🏼
Bitter melon really helps with high blood sugar
I've heard that. Fortunately, my A1C is in the normal range.
In addition to eating bitter melon, I also enjoy tea from drying the leaves.
Tank you for your recipe Sir... I Will be try
I hope you enjoy it!
knife needs attention. looks very good.
Agreed. I used a filet knife. I’m just a home cook so I don’t have expensive sushi knives. Maybe it’s time to invest in some quality knives.
Would you look at that!!!! Perfect is absolutely right
Thanks 👍🏼
I can’t wait to start my garden 🪴 ❤
How exciting!
Thanks for showing this i'll definatly try it❤
Let us know how it works. Thanks for watching!
Do you need to plant trellises for support?
No, plant trellises are not needed.
Dude great video. Love seeing the happy family too! Next up you'll have to show me how to catch stripers on the surf!
Thank you 🤙🏼. Haven’t caught a striper yet so unfortunately I can’t help you there.
I absolutely love your container garden! I think I’ll add carrots and beets to ours. Thanks for the inspiration!🌱
Thank you for those kind words!
Hi Rye. I love that cage. I just ordered some wire cones and bags from Amazon. I wish I had seen this video first. Now I know. Thanks and you both take care
Hi Karen, the cages have worked out really well to keep stop the critters from attacking our veggies. Take care, Ryan
Hi guys. Nice harvest. I will have to go to some of your back videos because you guys have my dream container vegetable garden. Take care
Thank you Karen! We're finishing up our cool season veggies with carrots, turnips and beets still to harvest. Looking forward to the warm season veggies in the coming months. Take care 😊
Beautiful garden and harvest! Learned so much from you. Thank you ❤
Thank you for those kind words.
Hello Gardener, I really love your idea. I will do the same idea you thought of and thanks!!!
This season I’m using the same structure and training with twine. Good luck with your cucumbers 🥒👍🏼
Loved watching the pups frap about the backyard!
Yes so nice to see Jackie frapping with Luna.
What size bag and how often do you water?
These are 10 gallon grow bags. I water once a week.
Hi Rye & Gin. I love your garden. If I could get my beets, radishes and turnips to grow like yours, I would be very happy. Sun gold tomatoes are so sweet, they don’t make it inside the house. Yes the seed starter does uses a lot of water, and I do love that brand. I love how you use the tray. I’m going to do my onions like yours, thank you and take care
Thank you for the kind words. I know what you mean about Sungold tomatoes … we also snack on them in the garden 😄. Good luck with the onions and have fun in the garden!
Good instructional video that cuts directly to the point. I have a Traeger Smoker but the sensor never seems to be accurate and often times, my Tri-Tips seem to come out dry unless I wrap them in foil at the very end of the smoking period. I also am using a Tri-Tip today that I bought at Costco, which is already seasoned. Any tips or comments would be appreciated. Thanks again for the instructional video.
Hi Doug, thank you for watching the video. Knowing the internal and smoker temperatures are important so I suggest you resolve this issue with your Traeger. Maybe go with a third party temperature probe system?
What type of fertiliser do you need?
I don’t fertilize sweet potatoes.
So cute! Wiggling in time with the music!!🎵🐾🤣❤️
😊
How close together are your plants? Yours are growing nicely even though they seem close together!
Yes, the plants were spaced close together about 8-10 inches apart, but didn't appear to affect their growth.
Amen
☺️
WOUU, SOO BEAUTIFULL...👏🙏🙋♀️
Thank you!
Thanks so much for the video! I never would have throught of ziploc baggies! What ultrasonic device do you use for the rats? Is it weird i wish there was something i could use that would disturb rats but not bunnies?! Hahah i love having rabbits in my yard and i dont even mind squirrels (in all honesty i love squirrels so perhaps im biased, lol) as they dont seem to disturb the gardens either, but those darn pesky rats are BRUTAL! I'll have to make some more cages this summer, and I'm definitely going to measure your way so the cages go on the outside of the pot versus me having to wiggle them down into the pot soil 😁 thank you so much!!!
The ziplock bags are a game changer. I use the thicker freezer bags and have seen bite marks in them as the rats attempted to take a bite and had a rude awakening lol ... the fruit was dented but safe 👍🏼. Here's the Amazon link to the animal repellent a.co/d/6XhtEn4 The reviews are mixed. Regarding the cages, measuring to fit outside the pot is definitely the way to go. Thanks again!
The blooms are so numerous this year! ❤
30 different blooms so far!
This is a really long comment, I'm so sorry!! Do the rats not go after the kale? They absolutely destroyed everything a couple years ago. They ate most of the leaves off our potato plants, they were feasting on our tomato plants (jerks), then between the rats and the white cabbage butterfly or moth (the little caterpillars will straight up devour a plant overnight) , they epically destroyed our kale plants. Either the rats or the caterpillars ate all our dill plants too. *sigh* we built up a cage around the tomatoes, but they (rats) eventually ate through that!!! It was a sturdy plastic mesh, 1/4". We didn't have time to try to build up something with the metal hardware mesh, plus the garden store thought the sturdy plastic would work. *sigh* I want to build a walk-in enclosure to surround one of our raised garden beds and then rebuild the oldest one and expand it inside the "cage" as well. I'm planning on using 2x4s and the metal hardware mesh 1/4". We had actually used the hardware mesh to extend the sides of the raised garden bed, ~~12-15 inches or so, our tomatoes and potatoes but it was just the sides, we didn't cover it. We thought somehow rabbits were jumping up there, so we created the extra high sides so they couldn't jump over them, lol. Much to our dismay we discovered it was rats! YUCK! The hardware mesh around the garden was our first attempt to combat the pests, but once we discovered it was rats we knew it was going to be an epic battle with them, lol. It's going to be a significant undertaking building a big walk-in structure primarily by myself. But that's the only thing that is going to keep them from our plants. We actually made a cover with the hardware mesh for our pepper plants just like your cover except we shoved it down into the dirt of the pot. I think next time we will make some like your covers and check that style out! None of us are used to growing lots of veggies in pots, but perhaps we need to do more of that so we can protect plants at least until I get my "cage" built, haha! I'm SO GLAD you made a video on this. Two years ago when we were dealing with all this there was very little information out there on how to deal with rats in gardens! And there was no info on building the covers like you show here. We came up with our hardware mesh cover idea on our own, so I'm thrilled other people have your video as a resource now!!! This would have been a lifesaver to have found when we needed it a few years ago so I know it will be a lifesaver for many other folks out there!
Hi Jessica, I've learned the hard way that the rats go after everything if given the opportunity. Yes, they've eaten kale and I was shocked to see on my Ring camera a rat biting off brussels sprout leaves and walking off with them! I've also seen them steal cherry tomatoes and green beans ... ugh! On occasion I've let my guard down only to regret it later when I go out and find fruit gone or chewed on, seedlings devoured down to nubs, leaves eaten, etc. And if it isn't rats, cabbage worms or slugs conspire to make our gardening life a challenge. The enclosure is a great idea ... lots of work to set it up but will be worth it. A former coworker's wife made one and grew her veggies in the enclosure in containers. She had excellent success. I'm sure you're aware of this, but if you cover the enclosure with insect netting, shade cloth, etc the rats can gnaw through it to enter. Thank you for your supportive and kind words about the video. By the way, if you haven't seen this one, I made a more comprehensive video on how to humanely protect veggies from rats. th-cam.com/video/jkg-GnnlnI0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=G9WPIZgAoJB6vYZi Even though I make these for containers, the protective cages can be used for raised beds or general in ground veggie gardening. Good luck with your war against these critters. I can see you're determined and well on your way to defeating them. Keep in touch. Ryan
want to see how you cook them
I have a couple of videos in this playlist of how to cook them - fritters, deep fried, and stuffed. Fishing & Clamming th-cam.com/play/PL173OCLQLxdGS0_5PE4N6OT_4XM7QVOf3.html
Your container garden looks amazing. Usually container gardens looks cluttered and I find them just too overwhelming. You have completely redefined container gardens. It's functional and there's order. Great advice too.
Thank you so much for the kind words. We converted from a raised bed to containers a couple of years ago and we couldn't be happier.
I went a few times near Huntington beach when i was a kid. Now I'm retired (its been a long time lol), and was thinking about going again. Where do you go if you don't mind me asking?
Interesting that you should mention Huntington Beach. When we take our dog there to walk the beach we see Pismo clam shells. Curious if they have returned. Regarding your question about where we go, email me at rshiroma81@gmail.com
Were there any specific amendments that you put in the soil before you planted?
I amend the soil with compost and an organic fertilizer when changing out veggies.
@@ryeginliving2664 is there specific nutrients and conditions specifically for sweet potato I guess is what I was asking
@@DebRoo11 No, I don't add anything specific for growing sweet potatoes. The simpler the better. Here's my understanding from the Oklahoma State University Extension, "Sweet potatoes produce best in a well-drained, light, sandy loam or silt loam. soil. Rich, heavy soils produce high yields of low-quality roots, and extremely poor, light sandy soils generally produce low yields of high-quality roots. Both surface and internal drainage are important in selecting a field."
@@ryeginliving2664 ♥ thank you! I got a lot of leaves last year but my harvest was very poor. Hoping this year is different. You had a beautiful harvest. All the best to you!

What size/height is your grow bag? I was about to plant some fracking daikon in a grow bag but just realized it may not be tall enough. Mine is only 10 inch tall.
