Too Hot To Hike

I was invited along on a three day backpacking trip by my friend Chuck Dunning near the last of May 2024. Sadly, we both knew this was probably the last multi day trip of the season before the extreme heat of the Texas summer arrived. Temperatures were already reaching into the low 90’s with 90% humidity. We were just two senior backpackers out for a stroll. I hope you enjoy and thanks for watc...

This is a 4 day backpacking trip I did in the LBJ National Grassland in May of 2024. As usual lately, things didn't go as planned but that's what makes them fun for me. The weather was forecasted to be in the upper 80's with good weather and only a slight chance of rain. Thunderstorms were forecasted to build along a dryline east of my location and not to affect my location. Checking the weathe...

This is a three day backpacking trip I did in April 2024 to see how my knee would handle getting back on trail after injuring it on my attempted thru hike of the Ouachita Trail last month. Short miles and early camps made this a really enjoyable trip for me. With not much in the way of excitement, it’s a video I put together just to touch base on happenings with friends. The trip did allow me t...

Lol, that was hilarious! Make you put the toilet paper in the refrigerator. Love it, didn't see that coming
😄
Oh my! I don't think those are blueberries!
What was the song at 20:10 on this video and where did you get it?
It's Earthbound by Victor Lundberg on Epidemic Sound.
@@tangenttrails Thanks. 🙂
@@iLikeMike You’re welcome.
Awesome adventure
@@hikingwithjackieboy Thank you Sir!
@tangenttrails you're welcome. Maybe next year I will be visiting a friend of mine who lives close to Golden Co.
Enjoying following you along, but y'all ain't seen nothing yet, and I mean that in a good way. Thanks for showing me some sections of the CT I haven't been on and looking forward to seeing what the trail scenery looks like now on those sections I've volunteered with the CTF to build and maintain in past years. Stay safe and have fun on your trek.
Thank for watching and thank for the trail work you’ve done. We took that new none motorized section just after Lake Ann pass that’s only a year old and got to meet a couple of trail crews. I was impressed at what fine work done.
@@tangenttrails I've always enjoyed the many summers volunteering with the CTF and made some lasting friends doing so. Looking forward to seeing how some of my (our!) handiwork is holding up on some of your future sections. Stay safe and have a blast!
Very nice hike and video ❤ 👍 Came here from Kevin and Jackie Boy channel
@@NatureAndOther Thanks! I’m happy you enjoyed watching!❤️
Aspens are beautiful trees! Coastal Redwood trees are mine. Trees are such incredible living sentinels, like staunch guardians of the mountains. No wonder Tolkien made Ents from them!
Ok, that room was far to fancy for a thru hike haha. Great place and loving this hike so far!
@@Everydaybackpacker It was all they had available at the time. Hardly got any sleep there. lol.
Jerry, thank you for taking us along.
@@hikingwithjackieboy You’re welcome!
And the rain continues. You guys are handling it better than I would. Monsoons have been in full force for your whole hike. At least you found a good spot in the campground. And with a free hotdog! Awesome.
@@CameronHall88 Yes. It was definitely a typical Colorado monsoon season. What wasn’t typical was the overnight storms. We often had waves of thunderstorms that would go all night.
Man, you guys just can't get away from the rain and hail on this trip. It's not horrible to get rained on. But constant rain where you don't get a chance for all your stuff to get dry, that's tough.
@@CameronHall88 There were times where town was the only place I could get my gear 100% dry. I knew going into this hike that it was likely to be a wet summer. Last year they had a later monsoon season. Not this year.
Jerry, why were you breathing so hard? 😂 Just messing with you. The aspens were beautiful. But that valley/meadow ... gorgeous. What an amazing spot!
@@CameronHall88 lol. This trail has it all. The beauty can’t be explained. You have to experience it for yourself.
Zero day looked great. Lovely stream to sit by in the morning. Food looked good as well. My problem is that I would just want to zero again after that!
@@CameronHall88 The sound of the river actually robbed me of two nights of quality sleep. I didn’t realize that until halfway through the last night when I closed all the windows and doors. Then I got about four good hours of sleep. lol.
I'm really glad you were able to get some rest.... on trail. Who would have thought you would have slept better in your tent. I loved how you were able to walk on actual history with the railroad. It's not nerdness. It's awesomeness and history. We have one of those here in Plano, my hometown. Railroad history, and I love it. I actually found one of the spikes. Love it #HASHTAG
@@theweldonator A lot of history in those mountains.
Very pretty and a favorite of our, preferably dry.
@@TrekkingwithDebandMike Thanks and thanks for watching!
I noticed your channel for the first time a couple weeks ago with your couple days on the Ouachita Trail. (Bummer that you got injured and had to bail.). I am preparing to do a thru hike of the OT after Thanksgiving. What I really like about your vids vs those I have seen by others is that you tend to show lots of the actual trail so I can see for myself what to prepare for. I am planning on starting the CT via section hiking next summer/fall. I am following your vids because you do such a good job showing the trail. Keep up the good work - and stay healthy. Good luck!
@@briankeenan1023 Thank you and good luck on the trails. I should be going back to finish up the OT in March. At least that’s the plan.
I tip my hat to all the trail maintenance crews out there for their "never ending" hard work...
The adventure continues
16.5 on the first day is awesome! That rain was no joke. Glad yall had a place with a roof. Campsite on night 2 looked great! I'm going to try to catch back up with this series later tonight. Beautiful hike so far.
@@CameronHall88 Rain, lightning or hail. That seemed to be the theme on this trip. Colorado monsoons don’t play around. lol.
Did you and Moose Pops Meet on the trail or did you know each other before?
@@jaybradford1311 We met around mile 4 I believe.
It's so much fun to re-live this trail through your videos, Jerry. Love it. Such good memories.
I'm glad you enjoy them. It was fun vlogging this trail. It's going to take a lot of time and physical work to get back out there and finish but I'm ready for it!
@@tangenttrails You can do it!
Very nice trails. Too bad the weather didn't cooperate
@@hikingwithjackieboy Thanks! You take what you can get weather wise on this trail.

I’m enjoying these videos and want to do the Colorado trail myself! Can you post a video on the logistics aspect of the hike? You mentioned your truck was in Durango. I would be interested in how you got to Denver and how you planned and implemented your resupply, or any resources you could share.
@@jaybradford1311 Thank you! I drove to Durango and stored my truck with Buckhorn Limousine. Flew to Denver and rode light rail to Littleton where I stayed at a hotel until shuttling to the trail. My resupply was done at the local grocery store in the trail towns I visited. For one of the best channels on all things CT, I would recommend checking out Outside Comfort Zone on TH-cam. Snackbox has great information for trail logistics.
Lovely hike! Hope the weather improved for you 👍
Thank you! There was about a hand full of days that I didn’t get rained on.

Wow, Jerry... it had to be hard to leave that room after the zero. It was so perfect.... well, so was the trail... lol
I figured it would be hard to leave but I hardly got any sleep so I was ready to get back on the trail. lol.
@tangenttrails I heard you say that in the video. Do you think it was because you were in a new place? That happens to me sometimes. Hopefully, you get some good sleep being back on trail.
@@theweldonator I found out it was the sound of the rushing river.
@tangenttrails my dad had something similar happen to him about 2 weeks ago at the beach. He was saying the waves kept him up all night and he couldn't sleep. I hope I see you get some good sleep through the rest of the trail.
Hi Jerry. What a beautiful trail! I'm coming over from Hiking With Jackie Boy and just subscribed to your channel. I am a hiker too and also post outdoor content.

Not sure how many times we've said it, but segments 1-5 seem to be the hardest! That campsite at the S Platte looked very familiar!

@@tridudyonthetrail Thanks Mark! There’s plenty more coming.
Love that view of the river on the bridge. Those mountain views are so beautiful. Gotta love Colorado. What was the highest elevation you hit on this video?
Just slightly above 8,000’ on this video. The trail doesn’t start reaching above 10,000’ until Segment 4 and that’s a few episodes away.
Great start to an amazing trip I’m sure!! Looking forward to following the journey!!!
