Ouachita Trail | Day 3

- I was invited along by my friend Eli of @TheAdventuresofEli on his thru hike attempt of the Ouachita Recreational Trail in March of 2024. This is day three of that hike. The 223-mile Ouachita (pronounced “Wash-i-tah”) Trail is a National Recreation Trail that runs through the Ouachita Mountains from Talimena State Park in eastern Oklahoma to Pinnacle Mountain State Park near Little Rock, Arkansas. All but the eastern 30 miles travel through the Ouachita National Forest, the oldest and largest National Forest in the Southern United States. Much of the route follows the ridges and crest lines of the Ouachita Mountains, providing outstanding views and a wilderness experience. The hiking trail avoids towns and heavily traveled roads, which can complicate resupply but results in a true sense of solitude.

beautiful river and area! I agree people need to pick up after them selfs.
That was about my favorite area on trail.
Man oh man! This sure makes me wish my knees had lasted longer. I miss this stuff.
Hello, Tony! Oh man, my right knee is still healing from this trail. lol.
Nice to start out downhill and ease into the day. Glad you were finding water along the way in those dry sections. Looks like you were making some good progress this day even with the whoop A hills. Those types of trails are usually more memorable. That purple tree on the trail was awesome. The river section near camp looked great. Awesome place for camp. Have a great day.
It started becoming obvious that we didn't plan quite enough time for this trip. The fall I had early on this day really spelled the doom for me on this hike and it's been a booger to recover from. This became a really frustrating trip. I really loved the scenery and history associated with this trail.
So goods
Thank you!
Absolutely beautiful, thank you for taking us along. Those long legs of Eli's... he would not be able to hike with my old verticality challenged... I think I will have to do 9 or 10 mile days on the first part of that Trail.. You rock. Thank you again for documenting your journey for use. 😊
@@anitasimmons3599 Thank you! It’s a rough trail for sure. Especially eastbound.
That is so cool,Jerry
Thanks Kevin!
@@tangenttrails you're welcome
I don’t why i missed that campspot at the end of the day .. 😂 i keeped walking thinking those other campers took the last one… i was only a mile or so ahead of you. It was basically dark pretty much when i setup 😂 still ended up in a nice spot though.
I was looking on FarOut this morning. There’s a comment at 39.5 on the Kiamichi River water drop that the best campsite is on the other side of the trail. Where I camped. lol.
@@tangenttrails 🤦♂️ohh well lol
Looks like some peaceful forests! Creeks seem silty. Lots of minerals?
I was quick to notice that about the creeks. I assumed it was from the recent rains although several of the springs are high in iron content.
@@tangenttrails There's one creek in the San Juan's that you'll cross on your CT hike that will be milky white - it's pretty unique. A good place to clog your filter - haha.
@@DavidonEarth Yes, I’ve seen that. I believe it’s in one of the sections after Molas Pass going south. Looks like high calcium content.
10 miles to the river, you were huffing and puffing pretty hard, my friend. Lol
Yes I was. lol. The Alpha hoodie and Flextail Zero that I purchased for this trip worked exceptionally.
Sucks about the trash. Those rocks look brutal. What's that strap you got there for your Garmin Inreach?
Some folks need educating about recreating responsibly. It's definitely a rocky trail that's brutal on the knees. The strap is the Garmin Backpack Tether Accessory for Garmin Devices. You can find it on Amazon.
