Mead Aged 5 years - A Surprising Taste Test
As I have been making my way through my old homebrew stash, I came across another mystery bottle. After a little thought it seemed that it belonged to a batch of Joes Ancient Orange Mead I made back in 2018 - even before I started doing beer.
I honestly expected the worst but was pleasantly surprised. Cheers

Homebrew Beer with.. Tea?
มุมมอง 8162 ปีที่แล้ว
Hi all, So I finally did it. Today to celebrate the return of the cheap homebrand kits, I threw a packet of herbal teas into the recipe to see if it will affect the beers taste, aroma, and even ability to brew at all. If all goes well, we might have a nice sessionable light summer beer for Christmas! If not, we will try something else! Shout-out to @oldirtybeuner for the sticker which has found...

มุมมอง 1.3K3 ปีที่แล้ว
Back at the brew again after ordering a bunch of ingredients online so no more excuses no more woolies (for now). Today we are making a Coopers Golden Lager from the kit, with 1.5kg Light Dry Malt, 500gm of cold steeped Caramalt, ~10g Northern Brewer hops boiled for 20 mins in the steep water, and intend to dry hop with Pride of Ringwood in a few days. Good to be back at it

To flat to dark
I follow instructions, watch videos, clean clean clean f@cking clean and they don't work. Wasted hundreds trying to save. Got 2 of these kits if anyone wants the garbage
Aerate your wort before pitching the yeast. I have one of these Cooper's Dark Ale, along with a 1.5 kg bag of light LME. The instructions don't call for a boil, but like you, I plan to add some more hops. The yeast that came with the can, 7g, was unidentified. I had a yeast delivery delayed and I needed yeast for a two gallon darkish ale batch, so I borrowed the unknown yeast from the kit. Still fermenting my darkish ale now. This may turn out to be a good thing, as my yeast that came late, is likely a superior ale yeast. I was disappointed that this was a no boil kit, and they suggest using sugar, so I went searching and found this video, and a couple others, making the kind of improvements to this Cooper's Dark Ale wort extract, I am also planning to do.
awesome! that should come out nicely
@@basichomebrew610 I have watched some add bittering hops to this kit. Coopers already designed their extract to be correct bitter, so I wasn't surprised their beer was too bitter. I plan to hop for flavor and aroma only. I have two choices for hops, Northern Brewer 1oz or Centennial 1oz ???? The yeast I have to use is Mangrove Jack's New World Strong Ale Yeast.
@markluxton3402 nice. I've not used the northern brewer hops before, might be good to try? centennial are always good, give a nice aroma
@@basichomebrew610 I am a very highly mechanical and abstract minded person, so I understand processes quickly. I am actually not experienced as much as you, with regards to the flavors. I brewed kits 30+ years ago. The first actual fermentation's, beer and wine, that I made, was when 12-13 years old. Had a good science teacher lol. The ingredients have changed a bit too, since brewing actual recipe kits; mid 30's. I chose Northern Brewer hops for this batch simply because it was well liked, and seemed to fit my tastes; plus my current choice of supplier had them lol I had my hops in a bag from boil; when I racked to a glass carboy from bucket, I removed it. When I was cleaning up my bucket I took the bag of hops, rinsed it off, squeezed out the trub, and gave it a sniff. WOW! I do not know much of what other hops smell like, but this smelled like THE best beer. I hope I only added just a bit more hoppiness though, as the Cooper's is already hopped. It is still bubbling today ;-) This is only my third batch of beer since restarting this hobby. Made some mistakes on the first, but may still turn out good after aging. Second batch was a bit experimental, but tastes good. Bottles didn't carbonate well, but I think I fixed it. This Cooper's brew went very well so far. I have been adding some proper gear and ingredients, and have improved temp control, as I went. I really should have started out fermenting sugar water, just to test everything out; less expensive than starting with a $65 kit...Porter.
Can I mix all the ingredients of the 5 gallon Pilsner refill on 20 liters bucket and then split them on two 10 liters fermenters?
Can I mix all the ingredients of the 5 gallon Pilsner refill on 20 liters bucket and then split them on two 10 liters fermenters?
yeah i dont see why not, as long as all vessels you are using are sterilised you shouldnt have any problems. the only issue might be easily transfering from the 20l bucket if theres no outlet valve, so if you're ok pouring from the 20l you should be ok. cheers!
@@basichomebrew610 thank you very much for the quick reply
@@neapenny711 no problems, good luck!
I brew my first beer and taste terrible before bottle process
yeah definietly not ready at that point
hey mate ive been pumping the surveys out lately, pureprofile or primeprofile seems the best I cranked like 100 bucks out of them in the first two weeks, then sayso maybe 20 a month if that, then purkle i got 40 dollars for maybe 2 months, biggest winner has been university studies for random crap and just make it up as you go haha... just getting back into brewing after another 2 year break. got 8 cans of woolies lager they are now gone forever from all stores
Hey Steve, that chunky consistancy you are talking about is actually Riwaka hops and why you will not be used to seeing it in other kits. It's a method we use in our crafted range to give some crafty hop aroma and definitely not anything to do with the age of the kit. Thanks for your independent honest review :)
wow! thats great info to have! thanks for clarifying it!
Try some flaked quick oats boil them in a hop sock and strain it will help the head retention trust me
Great video mate. Interesting to see a home brew can sit on the shelf for that long and still be drinkable. Cheers and Keep it up! 🤙
thanks mate! yeah the stuff is pretty durable when it comes down to it
You can order it on line it’s cheaper depending which day you order it regards
great tip! thanks!
That's a surprise. Would have thought that it would be heavily oxidized by now stored in an oxygen permeable soda bottle for 5 years.
who knows, was a surprise to me as well
I agree with you that they waffle on and that is to pu it politely about washing beer lees. been brewing since the seventies and now they have gone well up in prices (beer kit) so buying malt which is at times cheaper helps out. so hence trying your method and making a tea beer with malt and saved yeast. thanks phil
cheers phil! yeah malt is a good way to go if you can get it cheaply
Ayy. This is more my style. I knew this would work
fantastic! simple is often better!
@@basichomebrew610 simple is always better. I have a fermzilla tri-conical and trub collection for this should be super easy.
I just did A Blackrock Pale Ale that was expired by a year. I put it in the fermenter yesterday and pitched the yeast it came with. It seems to be bubbling away as it should.
excellent! Yeah i think the use by dates can be taken with a grain of salt
Stick the unopen can in hot water for 10 mins to warm it up it'll make it easier to pour out of the tin when putting it into the fermenter
Great video, but you put a 10 minute timer on my google home!
thanks mate! lol those things are always listening arent they! thanks for watching have a good one
Hey hows it going i just finished my homebrew wich has 1 can woolworths draught 1 kilo dextrose 1 kilo biscuit malt and about 300 grams quick oats 40 grams saaz dry hopped 20 grams halertau dry hopped Kaveic yeast Its bubbling away now so hopefully its drinkable but i got a strong stomach and love to drink so I'll still be drinking it regardless.
mate that sounds awesome! let us know how it turns out!
@@basichomebrew610....It turned out terrible all those extra ingredients and still turned out like shit.I must admit I think the quick oats helped the head retention it did seem to give it a nice head that stuck around.I do think your right normal table sugar gave it a terrible cidery twang I used raw sugar before and the twang wasn't as bad but yeah no more woolworths cans for me.
@@anonymouscitizen6165 thanks for the update! good to know, the oats sound like something you could work with more in future at least! Cheers
Ive been reusing just tossing wort on the old trub. Works great for me... but im making the same style over 3x.
awesome! especially if same style thats probably easiest way to do it!
Im going to make a batch of this week using 1 tin woolies draft 1 kilo of pale ale 2 row malt 1 kilo raw rolled oats 1 kilo brown sugar Some left over hops cascade and halertau about 50 grams each Some us 05 ale yeast Also some orange peel for a bit of fruity flavour I hope it turns out drinkable but 20 litres of beer for about 30 bucks isnt 2 bad i think
oh nice! that sounds like it would make an awesome batch! love to hear how it goes
Just brewed this tonight.... There was no mention of adding sugar which I thought was unusual. So question is..... There is no need to add anything other than the can, water & yeast. I have no access to the dry malt right now. Thanks all
thats correct just the can, dry malt and yeast will do the trick for this one, sugar might bump up the ABV a bit but i would use extra dry malt rather than sugar for an IPA, hope that helps
@@basichomebrew610 Thanks .. but as I mentioned. There was no access to dry malt in the shop, which was not great considering the kit suggested it, so I just had to go with recommendations of 1kg sugar which I was told from a guy/email from the kit manufacturers.
@michaeldpeers ah right sorry I missed that. it would work with sugar but wouldn't taste the same, wouldn't have the same mouthfeel
@@basichomebrew610 Had the first drink of it last night. Wasn't bad to say I only had sugar to hand. Well, if I try it again, then now I know that some kits are not complete kits. Cheers
@@MP-Media fantastic! thats great news mate, its all a learning process in the end, cheers
Have you ever tried quick oats in the homebrew i looked on the net and supposedly it helps with head retention and mouth feel

Great video. I've only tried mead once a long time ago. Been wanting to make a 1 gallon batch, mainly for the wife. Maybe you could post a commercial beer tasting/review every so often when/if you get the urge, just to have a bit of content for the channel while you take a break from homebrewing. Cheers mate!🍺🍻
cheers mate, yeah i could do a few regular reviews possibly, but cant get the same sort of quality as Hef does in his reviews! Thanks for watching sorry didnt reply sooner
Great video, mate. Another homebrewing channel I follow has posted some mead videos too.mI’m not sure that I’d like drinking it but it looks like an interesting process. Hopefully your brewing equipment finds its way out of storage in the future. Maybe the solution is kegging 😉😂 Cheers!
cheers mate! yeah its not really for me either to be honest, i can appreciate it turned out to what it should have and doesnt taste bad, actually nice, but im just not in the mood to have it really. finished half the bottle at least :) the brewing will be back at some point, but i need to sort my storage situation, its gotten out of hand, even my workbench is just covered in half finished projects, need to get some stuff done before getting back on it. thanks mate

Mate I can’t get any homebrand from my local either. No dextrose either. Have to drive 40 mins from me to get any. I’ve tended to order from coopers and hit big w. About to bottle a dark ale tomorrow and then start an amber ale
ah beaut! coopers dark is a great kit, one of my favourites, good luck there! woolies have since brought homebrew back to my local which is handy, quite a bit more expensive than it used to be though

Good vid mate .how did you carbonate the ginger beer .i just made some morgans using coopers sugar drops and i wasnt happy with the carbonation .did you bulk prime like you do with beer ?
yes i bulk primed the ginger beer also, it was really handy as the ginger beer can actually specified how much sugar to use, so there wasnt much guesswork involved. i have another batch going right now but i accidently put too much water in so itll be a weak batch
When you prime with the liquid mix ,how do you mix without stirring up the stuff that settled on the bottom of the fermenter? I have been advised not to transfer to a second vessel because of oxygen entering the mix
very good question. how i handle it is just gently stir the mix in slowly, making sure to keep the stirrer above the bottom (usually 10cm or so higher). I create a gentle 'whirlpool' then let it mix itself for 5 minutes or so, seems to do the trick
The sound is very low. You need a better microphone.
recently bought one actually, but in this case i think you might just need to turn the volume up a bit, sounds ok to me
Trying a real ale ATM with be2 and some dextrose, tea bag galaxy hops and will dry hop with Citra just before bottling. Hopefully goes ok. Love the vids mate.
I might give the ginger beer a crack I've always avoided it because brigalow stuff has always been crap in the past
yeah ive heard that, and i dont think ive done any of their beer kits. definitely worth trying the ginger beer if you get a chance, im still knocking them back, they got really nice with a few more weeks
Great video, mate. I reckon you’re on the money regarding the dissipating flavour of the first beer due to time. It might be a good beer to dry hop with some Azacca as that will impart some mango aroma and flavour too. Well done on the ginger beer. 7.5/10 is definitely a success. I should have a review of my Pacific Ale 2.0 in a couple of weeks and am planning to brew a dark ale soon. Cheers!
great idea with the Azacca! love the suggestion! looking forward to your pacific ale! good to see you getting back into it! Cheers

Great news on the GB, might have to give it a go myself! Did you just use the kit yeast? and what temp did you ferment at?
thanks, yeah i just used the yeast it came with, really impressed with the kit and definitely a repeat. I started ferment at about 22 degrees and it would have hoverered around the 20-22 for most of it (not temp controlled but keeps a pretty stable temp in my garage). Hope that helps
@@basichomebrew610 great cheers mate. Might knock one down this weekend.
Too bad about the lack of mango notes on the first beer but like you said, at least it was still a good beer! Good idea to try brewing that one again. The Ginger Beer looks & sounds tasty!
