In this week's episode, I visited the Greek Island of Kalymnos: a sport climber's paradise. I was dealing with a lot of fear and apprehension which was affecting my climbing. In this video, I go through some steps to try and deal with it.

I tried setting a Crack Boulder with no experience
มุมมอง 21K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
This week I tried setting a crack boulder problem with the help of Angus Harrison from Torq Routesetting. Pete Whitaker from @WideBoyz sent us a bunch of their fiberglass holds to test out. Turns out crack climbing and jamming is pretty tricky! Win 50% OFF Wide Boyz cracks with Soft Grip Pro, for your gym or home wall. Just fill in the 3 question form below! This week I tried setting a boulder with absolutely no experience at all. Turns out route setting is harder than it looks! I might stick to climbing and bouldering! 0 Hours of Bouldering VS 100 Hours of Bouldering
มุมมอง 135K4 หลายเดือนก่อน
I revisit bouldering after 100 hours on the wall to see if I've improved. Clips from similar graded climbs are compared to highlight improvements, if any, to my abilities over the past year. Have I improved in the grade? Let's see. Thanks as always to my lovely wife, Kim, for filming and making the thumbnail, avatar and banner art for the channel!
Welcome to the outdoor club mate! :) 🎉🎉🎉
actually the most impressive thing i noticed is that on the red boulder he just put his right foot against the wall to reach for the top, not looking for a foothold or being unsure if thats allowed, he just put it there. amazing
I always thought V5/V6 is the limit if someone had super human strength but no experience climbing. That was amazing to watch. I now feel like a total gumby lol.
😮 Yo!!!! 😂
W
Mate if you can flsh 6c, you're more than ready to start with projecting and climbing 7a, especially if you find one that fits your preferred style. Looking forward to the next videos <3
Hahaha jup that's the experience looking forward to the video
Outdoor bouldering is absolutely brutal. I remember my first outdoor boulder having to hold the worst sloper I’ve ever seen. Somehow I managed it, but it was not fun. The next one I did was a V2 and it was one of the scariest climbs of my life to date. Outdoor bouldering is the best way to build practical climbing strength and confidence in my opinion. Keep up the good work!
Don’t underestimate the power of hang boarding
This is stupid how strong he is😢
lmfao
The footslip was brutal
Where you bouldering at?
Looks like ley quarry
Poor baby!!!
Glad to see you talk about dealing with fear. I definitely don't have the right tools to manage it well.
struggling up V0 routes is the reason I hate outdoor bouldering. It's not very inspiring 😂
An outdoor v2 will really humble you 😂
Apparently this was a v zero 😭
i flashed a v3 my first time too. any real athlete will. However I trained ju jitsu and was an electrician at the time. i got a v4 my first day but I think it took more than 1 try, maybe if someone showed me the beta. but getting those v5s was crazy
At least that will help you get more comfortable with falling especially on boulders and with outdoor slips and falling in general!! 😁
woah. a surprise slip. hope you were ok.
I think the judo probably helped him with body awareness too. Understanding how applying force with your hands and legs makes your body move is pretty important. And I think that is partly why his footwork was already so good and why he made pretty good instinctive choices about the next move when he differed from your beta.
I just realised you're putting the draws in on the send. When you're at your limit, you don't really want to be doing that? (pre-place them)
This video brought me back to my first time climbing i felt really well just hanging upside down and doing dynos, meanwhile i hated the climbing shoes and the less i have to stand on crimps (while my feets are crushed in a 1 or 2 sizes smaller) the better. First time in this channel !! Already subbed, i remember some of your journey in this sport including lead climbing videos and so on!
I want to return to kalymnos😢
Thoroughly enjoyed this. The first video of yours I've seen, and I had to watch it. Not just for the subject, which I was very curious about, but because we have similar names. I agree with your assessment of why he did so well. The foot awareness could just come from his martial arts background, as well. I'm guessing part of why he got so pumped so quickly, is that he doesn't know yet how to be more efficient with his climbing, and relied more on his grip strength.
Surely, this is close to my limit? You flashed it, it's not close to your limit 😂😂
😂
It turns out just being strong is more of a factor than all coaches would like you to believe. 😂
I Really hope he is inspired to go back to complete the boulders he failed on. I know I always am, Failure is the greatest motivator in climbing I think!
Was a pleasure meeting ya, hope you enjoyed your trip, I sure did mine
This is not his first time.
Banger video, so proud of you
Wooooow 😮😮😮😮
Nice work. Do what you did with the baby falls every time you go out. Just stick clip up something hard to where its a safe fall then do the falls from each move up to where you could clip the next bolt. You're gonna rocket through grades once you learn to relax more. More you fall the more you realize it's safe. Its tough on stuff under 11 or 6b cause it usually has more ledges.
I still get scared and have to redo this system even climbing 7b. Onsiting is the scariest because you're introducing so many unknowns into your system. New rock, unknown holds, unknown falls, etc. thats why it's good to start with this every time you go out.
Kalymnos looks absolutely incredible, I’m heading there tomorrow and I can’t wait to do some climbing
Enjoy!
9:09 absolutely scunnered
Honestly, the biggest takeaway from this video is that Kim is just the best.
If this isn't the most under-rated and under-subscribed climbing channel I don't know what is. Keep up the great work Mike! Really enjoying these videos!
I took that moment where you self analyse your distances to heart. I've been bouldering for a few years, but I only see out of one eye meaning I have no depth perception. It's interesting to me to see how others deal with that kind of fear not knowing how far you might fall
20:09 dont take your hand of the dead rope!
There are definitely times I find myself getting a little scared even in my gym lol. I call it the heebie jeebies. I have climbed taller gyms, but some days I just get the jeebies and it impacts my climbing. It's something I'm working on mentally, and it's very rewarding to make progress! Huge confidence boost to watch your videos before going to the gym!
love the narration style mike !
sick video, i was climbing in another state and had a similar experience to you! when you're really used to a particular type of rock, being 30m up on a different type of rock can feel terrifying!
It's a real battle - I stopped climbing for a few years because I only had one good go in me each day until I lost my nerve!
That last route was a proper fight ! You have insane endurance, especially when climbing a bit scared makes you griping everything way too much. I really didn't think you'd do it when I first started hearing you power screaming, well done mate !
My guy climbing and handling the drone by himself at the same time is hilarious and very impressive
This is becoming my favorite climbing channel, keep it up!
thanks a lot!
He's insanely good for a beginner but I think that you should let him try the route first before showing him the beta.
Was expecting a mission impossible mask removal to reveal Magnus!
That guy is an athlete!
You've come a long way already. Good job! :)
