Why I hate outdoor bouldering... and what I'm doing to fix it

This week I try to conquer my fear of topping out boulders when bouldering outdoors. It's been an issue for me since I first encountered a top out. Let's see if we can make it better.

MB & Japanese gyms' grades are pretty similar. You need to have good techniques to do either, so it's not really sandbagged. Commercial gym grades tend to be soft to attrack more customers It's nice to see your progression throughout the vid. I think the biggest improvement is your footwork & body tension, which is what beginners tend to lack

Is it not common to wear helmets when bouldering? I know the falls aren't massive but I'd feel quite uncomfortable taking a fall from that height with rocks all around.

higly interesting. perhaps this is more of a workout for the tendons in the arm. that can be why you fealt the arm becoming "harder". and the vanes popping out.

Initial fall belayer was way too far off the wall - adds 2-3m fall. Ohm is nice in many situations, but needs practise for soft falls and less clip fumbling.

I've found that doing practice falls was really helpful for me to get used to falling. I think that after watching this video I've realized I was never really afraid of falling but rather uncomfortable with it. It's really interesting to see your perspective on a legitimate fear as opposed to a discomfort. I have also found that clipping when the draw is around level with my torso helps with this fear because you pull significantly less slack out when clipping at "proper" height. This also forces you to be more comfortable climbing above the draw which is definitely something I struggled with at the beginning of my sport career.

boards aren't sandbagged, gyms are soft. As well as board climbing is really focused on strength and tension. It hurts the ego when you first try but man do you get stronger once you get passed that.

Hot take: if the top out is not interesting , adds no difficulty and the down climb is sketchy, you can skip the top out and tick the boulder legitimately. Personally, I hate dropout boulders and I always top them out , but most of the time I regret it.

I found fall practice helpful and got used to taking big falls quickly, but that did not immediately translate to taking unanticipated falls. One tip is that if you're getting too scared waiting to fall, you should dial back the intensity slightly and let go as soon as you decide where to fall. You don't need to let the belayer know. They should be ready to catch a fall no matter what, especially if you tell them on the ground. If you can figure out an effective way to add some fall training, it could be quite beneficial as you can take many more falls than if you were falling from climbing hard.

15 kg is the problem In my opinion And the belayer is already doing so much for the climber so it’s nice to use the ohm to make there lives a bit easier

Topping out is difficult for people that climb mainly indoor(me included). Top-outs doesn’t exist in most gyms, so it’s reeeeeally uncomfortable doing hard stuff outdoors, that you haven’t done easy versions if indoors. I was fortunate enough to find a couple of old school gyms in London that had top-outs. It helped so much with confidence to practice real easy boulders with top outs
