"Four Ghosts in Hamlet" by Fritz Leiber
This novelette of Leiber's is a bit more straightforward ghost story, tho a very well told one as can be expected. Its wit and its detailed portrayal of theatrical life remind of Reggie Oliver's fiction.

Mr. Padson should have watched Invasion of the Body Snatchers first! You do what Donald Sutherland did, ...you blend in and act like them, not see a shrink who, like any Mayor, would likely be one of them. The real disturbing thing is this isn't science fiction. It clearly exists today in 2021 but they're called something else. Their goal though is the same as what is presented here, to remove a human being from its own spiritual nature. I see there have been two thumbs down... Bill Gates and Ellen (Grey ones....)

New Orleans, July 2020. I discovered Blackwood's stories when we were still in NYC, and took batches of books on our 1200 mile drive.. with us - including all my mystery/horror collections. SECRET WORSHIP is an all time favorite - John Silence a compelling character. It is indeed, classic. Moreover, at 72, I am of the generation who believes classic works such as this do not benefit from criticism leveled by younger listeners. They simply should be appreciated for what they are: excellently written tales, OF THEIR TIME AND PLACE. Not sure who "Mary Sue' is, or what purpose another ending might have served. These have stood the test of time, and will endure, without snarky comments from youngsters. Sincerest thanks for the recording. I'll admit I gave a quick listen to several other versions - but yours caught my ear as clearly the best. Cheers from the French Quarter...

A very good story. Borges uses a known trick: attention is naturally focused on the flamboyant elements (the labyrinth), while they were merely a means to distract. As he says in his story, we tend to assume a more imposing/fantastical solution, so we are inclined to not look at the more basic one if it requires a disillusionment. Another author who uses this, to some degree, is ETA Hoffmann.
