He Cometh and He Passeth By by H. Russell Wakefield

Something of a retelling of "Casting the Runes" by M.R. James, down to Aliester Crowley-inspired villain (though, in this case, it must be said that H.R. Wakefield's take is a bit more charismatic).
This story was originally collected in Wakefield's 1920s collection "They Return At Evening" which was later reprinted by the excellent Ash-Tree Press.
