Great video ! That is true M cameras need to be used :)
Problem with the 43 is the shallow dof when setting it for zone focus. You need a very narrow aperture.
The R lenses are inspiring, but the anamorphic lens you used to shoot this video has a lovely rendering. I'd love to see it on a monochrome sensor or at least a good black & white grade from a cinema camera footage.
Oh yes it’s coming soon for sure. Been using on the m11 Monochrom a lot!
Slippery slope getting into Leica R! I haven’t shot the 35 lux but it’s a bucket list lens. I’d say try out the 80mm summilux and the 100mm macro are two of the best lenses I’ve ever used. I actually like the 28mm 2.8 a lot for being affordable and punching above its weight class.
They are so good. The 80 lux is next up for sure.
@ it’ll match perfectly with your 35 and 50. Are you trying to match serial numbers?
Soul > specs
All day for me. 100 percent agree
Oooooo tasty! Love this, both the video, the images and the dialogue! Class Kevin
Thank you brother! 🙏🙏
Do these have click-less aperture rings? I thought that 28 mm is ideal for the anamorphic aspect for cinema lenses
Most people do de-click the aperture rings when they cinemod but I decided not to. For me it just doesn’t make sense. I’m not sure about the 28mm question but I do know recently people have been using the R lenses as the base taking lenses to build an anamorphic set.
When I hit lotto my first chose with a 50mm 35mm 85mm lens
Sounds like a plan!
Great video!
@@camerafusion thank you for the kind words!
Love these videos man. Keep em coming Kevin. Excited to spend some more time with my friends R set. He's got some good ones like that 19 and a 15mm.
Thank you! I haven’t tried the 15 yet but I’ve heard it’s amazing. The 80 1.4 is next for me.
I was offered the Leica R Apo Macro 100mm for around 1K euros but having just got the 90 f1.5 M I was like 'when am I ever going to use that?' Apparently, the focus throw is very long too, but it might be just the tool for photographing your bags and straps. Meanwhile a Helios 85 f1.5 is coming, a real bokeh monster. Great channel and I like your way of thinking about glass and pushing the envelope.
The 100 apo is actually the first R lens I ever used. It’s a stunning lens! Helios 85 1.5 is a beast. I use a 58 Helios pretty often for video stuff.
This video is fire. I would say the new lenses are quite impressive!!!
Time to test out more lenses!
Great vid. Thanks for sharing. Images were great!
Thank you for watching!
nice work. do one with the Nocti 0.95 !
Thank you! I will do one on the .95 soon for sure!
track title?
I know what an Anamorphic lens is! Worked with Panavision cameras and lenses for over 40 years. Love your channel, and what you do!
Wow amazing! Thanks for sharing that. Those are dream lenses!
Great video. Very informational 😮😄👏🏻
😀😀😀
Wouldnt the M versions of these lenses from the same decade offer even more character?
They have more imperfections and character yes. The summicron M 50 they still sell today is actually the same optical design from the 70’s but in an updated body. What I was getting at is I feel the R’s (specifically the summilux’s and 19mm) give a really nice balance of character and sharpness. This is all subjective obviously. Just my personal opinion. I like the 50’s and 60’s M glass then the modern stuff.
re title question, depends on specific lenses like anything. The 100 APO ME was probably the best Leica lens made when it debuted in 87 up through the release of the 50 Lux ASPH but that's just my opinion. For a 35 or 50 lux/cron, would just get the contemporary M mount version in 9 out of 10 cases. for underrated lenses, Olympus OM 50mm and 90mm f2.0 auto-macros.
The 50 summilux ASPH is the first M lens I recommend to anyone. It’s one of the best Leica lenses ever made in my opinion.
Leica R lenses are superb. Lovely video.
Thank you for watching!
I will buy one of these if my Sony RX1 ever dies.
Good idea!
you can always tell when youtubers actually know what they are talking about! thanks for all the great explanations, Id wondered about viewfinder magnification for a while and what it meant. I've just bought an SL3 and 50mm summilux as my first leicas. I've not shot film in 20 years, but thinking a leica film body so I can enjoy the 50 mm summilux in a different way might be fun and creative.
Thank you so much! 50mm summilux is where I tell every new Leica user to start so you did great there! It works just as good on film as digital.
Absolutely love this review. Not sure Q43 is for me. Have you tried the 14-24 F2.8 on the SL2S? Unreal. Loved your shots… the car, SD, and the making-of the strap. Glad I found this.
Thank you so much for the kind words! I haven’t tried that lens yet. Right now I’m only adapting M and R lenses on the SL actually!
Thanks, Kevin, this drove me to get one, when I found a copy that had been serviced by Wetzlar in April of 2024. The lens absolutely stellar and IMHO worth every penny. I will probably get rid of my other 35s as I can't imagine putting an inferior 35 on my Leica, now I have this one. Not even the 216 steel rim...
Congrats on the find! I totally agree that it makes you only want to shoot the AA once you have it. I am exactly the same way haha!
Gorgeous. What are these cameras priced at these days?
@@D.Trider hard to say exactly but 40-50k usd roughly
Thanks--a very fair presentation. One piece if history you might have mentioned along with the tech details is that the M3 was selected as "the gadget of the century", I believe by Time/Life Inc. Not only was its late 1950s design so extraordinary that it remains the camera of choice for innumerable photo fans, but also its build quality will never be equaled. I take issue with your judgement re the SM Barnack series. Indeed, after one is familiar with the viewfinder of the M3 the corresponding finder of a Barnack appears almost impossible to use. This is not the case. While it is inferior, one can adapt to it, and one has the option of using the full array of Leica SM lenses. Another advantage: the Barnack is smaller than the M3 and much easier to tuck under a coat, especially with a collapsible lens. P.S. Please omit "literally" where you meant "actually," and don't use "incredible," which no longer has a meaning.
When you click for that fake patina m9
I bought a 3d printed quick load spool for my m3. It’s game changing for speed of loading of film.
very cool!
if a camera has a ton of amazing features/qualities, lasts forever, and isnt crazy expensive, its a good camera. if it has all that, and has a crazy pricetag, its called getting what you pay for. In no way, shape, or form, will a leica, or its user, ever be the greatest. They're all average and glorified to pertain to a "pinkys out" "better than you" audience, hence this video. "greatest camera of all time" what a laugh.
what do you think the greatest camera of all time? just curious, I am a newbie who just started film photography as a casual hobby.
@@Azra-z7c The best camera is whatever gets you out there shooting, money should never be a limiter. ive got a $5k camera, but some of my fav images were taken with a $50 body and a lens i got for $6 thrifting. If you want modern film with bells and whistles, nikon and canon made a bunch in the late 90s-early 2000s, ton of good glass for cheap aswell. If you want older, konica/yashica made some bulletproof cams back in the day. The c35, c35 fd, electro 35, theres like 15 dif models of the same cam, all come with some insanely good hexanon glass. Any lens from the tomioka factory is amazing, if you want good cheap-ish lenses, start there. Same goes for the russian zenit cameras, lot of the time you can get those for cheap with helios 44 lenses, absolutely gorgeous. Id buy 50 of those before id ever buy a leica. More smiles per dollar, 1000000%. Hope this helps!
Haha ok. Thanks for the reply.
Lucky me..I had one

The LENS hood looks FUNNY as CHIT on that 43mm. lololol.
Great photos and video Kevin. Love the b&w ones the most, amazing what you can get out of that radioactive Summicron
Thank you so much! That lens is one of my favorites for a reason!
Hey there! I was wondering which viewfinder you have attached? I bought an M4 and am looking to get one for 28mm
I have a 35mm SBLOO viewfinder on there. For 28mm I use the SLOOZ or SUOOQ. Those are the Leica designation for them. I believe voightlander makes a nice one as well if you want to buy new.
Thanks for the review, great photos and looks a superb camera. Just one thing in the narrative to amend - when you crop you do get the compression of an equivalent longer lens because the compression is a consequence of the perspective at that viewing distance not the optics used.
Thank you for watching!
Leica's are brilliantly engineered, built to last and almost perfect within their limitations. But it's the limitations that make these cameras less than perfect. The lenses are astounding of course, but the end results are only slightly better than, say, Olympus or Nikon etc. The deal breaker for most people though is (obviously) the outrageous price. If I could afford one I'd buy one. But I can't, so I'll stick with my Nikons and Olympus's both of which give me results indistinguishable from Leica.
Absolutely agree! Just use the tool that works for you. We all know it’s less about the camera and more about lighting and subject.
What anamorphic lens are you filming on please?
I’m using the Blazar Remus with the GFX100 here!
Your M3 appears to have two separate viewfinders. One for focus, one for composition. I prefer the external finder for even 50mm lenses.
One of them has an external finder for 35 on it. Just happened to be on there from when I used it before.
Hey Kevin, what a qualitative and great review! Love the angles you used for the car. What camera did you film on? Warm greetings from Belgium
Thank you so much! I am filming on a red komodo and Epic-W
