American Flyer O Gauge Streamliner Motor Restoration
This is the inspection, tear down and finished product of my mid 1930's O gauge motor. Pretty big transformation cosmetically just cleaning up the old grease. Mechanically, it runs as it should after having some issues.

Pre-Restoration American Flyer City of Denver O Gauge Streamliner
มุมมอง 2.2Kปีที่แล้ว
Prewar American Flyer O Gauge City of Denver Streamliner. Bought this untested. Wiring is bad in both cars. Whistle is missing. Motor only goes in reverse and the wheel bearings/bushings are worn badly and the wheels wiggle up and down. Armature is worn and there is a groove from the brushes on the copper plate. Missing one set of wheels from a passenger truck. However, original paint in okay c...
Lionel 2383 F3 with replacement MTH F3 shell.
มุมมอง 465ปีที่แล้ว
Lionel Postwar single motor 2383 chassis. Sprayed flat gunmetal to match the truck sides. Added an MTH F3 shell. size is identical to the Lionel shell. had to shorten the rear mounting posts on the shell with a Dremel to match the length on the Lionel shell. Other than that, it was a direct fit. Nice detailed shell on a train show chassis.

Hoge 900 Streamliner. Made in tbe 1930's. This set is in rough shape. It was missing the motor. I had a motor in a junk lot that I get running again (missing pinion gear, replaced with a Lionel). This set has been repainted a few times, bent, twisted and broken. Missing vestibules and headlight mount. This is the start of a multi-month project. Dents will be pushed out, bends staightened and pi...

A year in the making. Came with scale wheels, no boards and no motor. Added new motor, brass flywheel and dogbone driveshaft. Replaced all lights with LEDs pre-wired for constant voltage from Evans Lighting. Changed wheels in pilot and trailing truck to high rail wheels with larger flanges from wheels I had in my parts boxes. Bought Lionel 2035 wheels without the gears on the back to be my new ...
MTH Z6 4-6-6-4 Challenger scale wheel to high rail wheel conversion
มุมมอง 526ปีที่แล้ว
Bought his Challenger project a year ago. Had scale wheels with very small flanges. Changed the wheels on the pilot truck and rear truck with wheels from the parts bin. Used Lionel 2035 non-geared wheels. They were the same diameter as the MTH originals but with a larger flange. Added a 4-40 washer to the center non-flanged wheel to keep the shoulder screw from binding the connecting rod. Had t...

MTH E8 Locomotive O gauge project
มุมมอง 536ปีที่แล้ว
My MTH E8 AB diesel set. Started off as an incomplete shell set. Used a donor AA set to get the frames, motors, portholes, horns and windshields. Wired with a manual reverse switch and a bridge rectifier to run the DC can motors off of a Lionel ZW AC transformer. Lovely shells. Runs great. Dual motors. Traction tires.
Lionel Prewar 810 crane car and 812 gondola. Lionel larger tinplate o gauge.
มุมมอง 605ปีที่แล้ว
Nothing fancy. Repainted 810 crane car. I cleaned up the gearing and added new string to the hook. Part of Lionels prewar larger o gauge collection. Scaled appropriately for the 251 and 256 locomotives.
Lionel Postwar 221 - restored to running condition.
มุมมอง 1.3Kปีที่แล้ว
Repaired Lionel 221. Rebuilt e unit. Minor paint touch ups. Replacement tender with new waterslide stripes. Dullcoat applied over the new stripes to cut down the gloss sheen. Non-magnetraction motor. Simple engine but it runs well and the e unit functions perfectly.
Lionel prewar/postwar tender project.
มุมมอง 276ปีที่แล้ว
An attempt to put correct (or more correct) tenders with some of my steam locomotives. 224e correct tender, 265 Silver Streak correct tender, 226e more correct tender (still not a real 226e tender but better than before), a new tender for my American Flyer 1680 Hudson and an MTH Greenbriar tender with new frame from scrap parts. I buy custom rubber stamps and white ink pads for my lettering.

Great info, and K4's were in Pennsylvania colors from MTH, SO my take away is I can use a bridge rectifier to basically replace the gut of a tender? I have a MTH 2-8-8-2 w/o tender .. I ran it with the tender from my C&O 2-6-6-6 Alleghany

This would have been very typical of model railroading in the 1930s. True two rail wasn't feasible due to lack of good insulators, so most modelers ran off of an outside third rail, but catenary was also common. During the depression there were articles on how to upgrade toy trains into something that would blend better into a scale layout. Thanks for sharing!!

It is a nice locomotive, but I'm confused. You said this was a Hudson. Hudsons are 4-6-4s, not a 2-6-4s? So you're still calling this a Hudson?

    • @davesmith2169
      @davesmith2169 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

Because, that is what the good people at American Flyer called it. They used the name Hudson in all their advertisements. Some model railroaders will take a second set of the front wheels and install them backwards behind the pilot wheels to get the correct 4 6 4 configuration of a real life Hudson to correct the American Flyer "mistake". I did enough work to get it back to life and made the decision to leave it like the AF people made it.

Surprised it actually worked to use that motor for an O gauge loco. It appears to be the "super-sized" Lionel HO motor that was used to power Geeps and ALCos with crown gear drives, made around 1964-1965. I'm used to working with the 'medium' and 'small' versions, which tend to run pretty hot. I suspect it's mostly because they don't have very good air circulation.

This 2344 f3 NYC is in rough shape like mine. (Inherited from my grandfather). Mine, the shell has stress cracks, inside the shell is covered in white film, either from a battery leaking, or just the chemicals breaking down in the plastic... (Mine is for sale, as I'll never be able to restore it myself)

  • @herbemont7627

I have this set with original track and Jefferson 75W transformer, mine will run, barely, with the Jefferson. It puts out 24V. It runs better with the ZW 275W which only is putting out about 21.5V, the engine pulls about 4 to 4.5 amps while running with added head light like you have done. I suspect the motor is just tired. The stator, armature, e-unit, wiring, slide pick up are all original. Pretty heavy train and a rather small engine, no plans to update or rewind anything on my engine, it runs okay and I like the all original aspect, I just don't run it all that much, it is 90 years old after all. I love your content, keep the videos coming

Very Nice. I just picked up the Lionel 785 in Grey. They are very nicely built and very detailed for being so large in scale. Good luck with your new baby, I hope to be getting a Albany / Boston soon, my Great grandfather worked on the Boston/Albany RR, until taken out by the Spanish Flu after WWl. Take good care of your new toy and enjoy it. Yes unfortunately we all can't afford to buy an original 700e, but these definitely help us out Lol.
