One sad undercurrent to this narrative is that they were trying a new policy of letting lower IQ recruits be in the armed forces and they called them McNamara's morons after the secretary of defense Robert McNamara, whose awful idea it was. It turned out it was a horrible idea to lower recruitment standards just to be able to get more soldiers for the front lines and private Pyle certainly was one of them, he never should've been in the service to begin with. God knows how many men lost their lives and contributed to costing other soldiers who were fit to serve their lives as well by the stupid decision to do that. It wasn't just mentally unfit recruits but physically unfit as well, often it was both and the policy was a controversial disaster (like Pyle being overweight).

It's insane how crazy boot camp was at the time and i'd never defend the guy but you do have to remember we were at war and he had a pretty short time to get these guys ready to deal with that situation and try and keep as many of them alive as he could, the ones who couldn't hack it f*ck em at least the majority would stand some kind of chance.

I’m not sure how old you are, you look young. I’ve always loved this movie, but it certainly hits different at 38. It’s one of the strongest anti war films I’m aware of.

It might be funny watching it but it definitely ain’t funny if you’re living it.

I went through basic in the mid eighties and DI’s didn’t tolerate insubordination in any form,If you didn’t want to be there you were thrown out.We started out with 56 and graduated 38. It’s the DI’s job to take the street out of you and break you down and rebuild you into a soldier and it does. I breezed through basic because I didn’t take it personally,I figured they did this with hundreds of kids a year it’s there job just roll throughout and it becomes easy. Lastly Every Platoon has a Pyle the DI’s always find one and they dog him all the time. The military is a great option if your not doing anything and aren’t going to college Peace.

I did ten years in the Navy (86-96). Obviously some aspects of our boot camp were different. But the crazy yelling and screaming and such was spot on. Our company commanders told us that we might one day forget the names of our wives and children, but we would remember theirs til the day we died. I still remember MS CPO Fred Hill and LI 1 Bob Brunton.

She had Hep C. She asked Forest to marry her because she knew that she was going to die and wanted Forest to take care of little Forest. Also. Forest started running after she left and ran for 3 years so there's no way she could have contacted him. The S/A from her father is what set her on that path she was on, running from one man to another and never finding what she needed but Forest was always there for her. I think the reason she kept turning Forest down is because she had low self-esteem and didn't feel that she was good enough for him. If she truly wanted his money she would have married him the first time he asked.
