MY 5-YEAR FINANCIAL PLAN || How I’ll Achieve My Perfect Financial Future
Making a 5-year plan can be a fun (and enlightening) experience. I was inspired to make a 5-year financial plan to dream of exactly where I want my finances to be in the near future. Visualizing goals and making steps to get to those goals can be a powerful way to actually accomplish them. In this video, I take you through six things I see in our financial future and exactly how I plan to achieve them.
Here is the investing calculator I use:

    I don't count vehicles or housing towards net worth. You will always need somewhere to live and wheels to get around. Unless you're living the vagabond dream, but that's a different topic. I always pay out of pocket and let HSA grow.

    Katie I love all of these. They are so relatable, even with our different household incomes. My eldest will be finishing (high) school around the same time as yours, in 6 years time. Which is crazy to me too. Our big goal is to clear our mortgage early and that is within reach in our 5 year plan. We should be in a position to repay our mortgage 14 years early. We might move to a bigger house at that point too, hopefully paying cash.

    • @KatieoftheHouse
      @KatieoftheHouse 21 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา

      Wow, that will save you so much money eh to have the mortgage finished so early! And doing it before your oldest finishes school will help so much with university expenses 🙌🏼 paying cabs for a home would be the ultimate flex!! I can’t wait for you to do that!

    Hi Katie. Great video as always. Hubby and I got out of debt including mortgage almost 3 years ago. We have never borrowed money again and have the mindset that we will never again if we can help it. So I think u will be ok about not going back into debt as its really hard work to climb out of it. And although its a patience building exercise, we love to save up for our goals and pay cash. We recently saved our 6 month emergency fund and saved up to do a complete bathroom reno. Best thing is its paid for and we get to enjoy it without that sinking feeling that we still gotta pay for it in the future. ❤ Veronica

    We have a 5 & 10 year plan also. We keep shuffling things around, moving items from the 10 year to the 5 year as we accomplish them. Sometimes when we get weary or sidetracked, we get out the plan, review it, and that usually gets us back in the game.

    I would like to dramatically downsize in the next five years, to a secure, low maintenance, much smaller home we could feel comfortable leaving for longer periods of time so we can travel more often for longer stretches of time without worrying about sprinkler systems, the pets, vandalism, maintenance issues, etc. Moving is an incredibly daunting prospect for us, and we love our beautiful home, but it’s already too much to handle without paid help and it’s only worsening with time. As much as I hate to say it, it’s time to face reality and get into something a lot more manageable. Hubby is not on board (like not at all), so no decision yet, but we keep looking at potential locations. Not sure what the future holds over the next five years, but a move is inevitable between now and then.

    • @arh1234
      @arh1234 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's worth looking. We toured apartments and townhomes (ease of travel was the goal) for ~3 years before we decided to make the move, and then we knew our options and could pounce when a good space was available. Loving the freedom!

      @KatieoftheHouse 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I can imagine that this is probably a decision that a lot of people face before/during retirement. Having a big beautiful home is amazing with kids and grandkids around, but it’s always a lot of work. If it keeps you from doing other things you love, then selling sounds like a good idea. Hopefully you can get hubby on board, but it might take a while to find the perfect place that will convince him ☺️

      Katy, I loved this video. I was going to comment the other way, but I think this comment might be interesting to others. (But it is a cut and paste,as I could never write in the YT comment area) . Your video was clearly a “lesson from a YT Friend” - hope you know what I am referring to. The idea of building 5 year goals is common in industry. We did it in many of the companies that I worked with. And as you say, over the course of time, the goals changed. But it does give you a road map. As far as your goals. They all seem reasonable and smart. I loved the one about helping the children with their future plans. I agree that traditional college is not for everyone. But if you do go that route, having someone else pay for it. (Liike the state) Is so much smarter than taking out loans. I think I mentioned in the past my concept of the “reverse college loan” . If not let me know and I will elaborate in a future video. I would make a comment about passive income. I have slightly different input. While you are working , and you don’t need your “portfolio” to generate cash for you then. I would focus on things that grow faster than generate income. I.E. “growth” stocks or ETFS vs “income” ones. As this will help the portfolio grow faster. But for those who can handle being a landlord. Perhaps a good compromise is investing in Real Estate” This could give you both the passive income, and if purchased the right property, give great growth too. And as RE is normally purchased with Leverage that could telp too. (But Dave Ramsey would disagree with that, and say only purchase investment property with 100 percent down) The secret is buying the right one. The plan for moving is very personal Especially one that includes having your mother join you and live with you. You, your mother, and Marc, should discuss further. Maybe she can contribute to the mortgage while she is with you. Make sure Marc is onboard with that too. But in general kudos on doing this planning., You're such a good one. Later Jon

    I was actually thinking about my life 5 years from now last night too, after I did my taxes. I would be paying off the last of my student loans if I stay as planned. I'm hoping it'll actually happen sooner so I can move on to other goals before then

      I hope you can do it before then so you can work on other things, but either way, it will be worth it when they are gone 🙂

    Hi Katie, thanks for sharing your 5 year goals! It is great to have a focus and intention going forward after debts are paid off. We did not have the income or debt elimination to pay for our children’s college. They both have student debt, but we cash flowed as much as we could provide them. My son stayed on campus and worked part time at Walmart to help pay his way. He did great, refinanced to get a lower interest rate and is close to having them all paid off in 10 years post graduation. My daughter decided campus living was not for her, so she commuted from home and also worked part time. Between us, she cash flowed her final two years entirely. She is still paying student loans now 5 years afterward, but is on track to have that paid soon. So while it’s admirable to pay your kids post high school education, don’t go into that goal with the expectation that you HAVE to pay it ALL. That would set you up for unnecessary emotional upset if for any reason you fall short of that goal. I know you have a healthy approach already 😀 and I am glad that we could contribute to their success even though we couldn’t afford the whole cost.

      Thanks so much for sharing, Roberta! I love that you helped as much as you could but that your kids helped out, too. They probably appreciate so much more that way. The college Marc and I went to is about 30 minutes away, so I’m hoping the boys will choose to go there and commute…and save a lot of money, but we’ll see! We definitely won’t take out loans to help them or anything like that, but I’d like to help as much as possible 😊

    I am so pleased you resisted the temptation to buy stuff, you exercised and built an incredibly important and underused emotional muscle (in American society) which is self control and you focused on your ‘needs’ (debt pay off which is so crucial for your families long term well being) and not on ‘wants’ which was a fleeting desire for some stuff that you hadn’t planned for. The exercise and building of this ‘muscle’ is just so important. Well done you.

      Thank you very much 😊 it’s definitely something that I’ve had to practice over time. I was like many people who never told myself no in the past and just got what I wanted when I wanted it, whether I had the money or not, which is why we had a ton of credit card debt in the past. Thankfully I realized my problem and that I didn’t want to live that life anymore. It’s a hard habit to break, but I do feel like I’m getting better at saying no 😃

      @@KatieoftheHouse Good for you, you are setting a great example to your boys. I have seen in my own large family, the nephews and nieces (all wonderful people) who grew up with financial discipline and being told about the family’s finances and what could be afforded and not afforded have done very well financially, by contrast the ones who grew up with lots of money and being indulged, have not fared (financially) so well.

    Looking at empty shelves for two more years just because you bought a car sounds unnecessarily harsh. If you find something pretty that you love, buy it and enjoy it. It’s dismal enough out there these days, get something that makes you smile and consider it money well spent.

      Oh I don’t think I can make it two years 😂 I’ve found some things around the house to add for now. I don’t love it, but it’s better than bare shelves, and I think I’ll try to buy a little each month if I can until it’s how I want it 😊

    Oh Katie, I could just picture you filling up all of those carts with goodies for your home, but I know your inner voice was telling you it wasn’t a good idea. You probably have something at the house already that you could put on the shelves that would look just as nice. I really applaud how disciplined you are. I probably would’ve gave in.🎉😊

      Thanks, Debra! I was able to find other things around the house and now they aren’t empty 😊 many people suggested the kids’ artwork, so I put some of that up and a few other things. It’s not perfect, but it’s better than bare shelves for sure!
