Applying to Canadian Universities? WATCH THIS VIDEO
hi, I am a current Grade 12 student and have an average score of 84, but also have 7 AP scores of 5555544, and I am now applying for bachelor of nursing or cs. Will I have the opportunity to receive an early admission?(I am not Canadian and is curious about how helpful are AP scores to my application?)
Hi! Great job with your AP exams, unless your program directly takes AP transfer credit they won't impact your scoring much, so I would recommend you to work on increasing your average first.
Quick question, I am a current grade 11 student, with an overall gpa of 97%. Is that enough for early admissions? (I am applying for the engineering courses)
You should be in a good position, keep up the good grades!
Yeah you are guranteed. It was high 80s, so as long as u keep it 9x.x% you should be guranteed. In fact, I even know people with 89s and 88s who got in with early admission but it depends case by case.
Hi, I am a grade 11 student and I made a guinea pig obstacle course (a ramp with a arch attached to it out of cardboard and other materials) and I was wondering if its a good idea to have it in my Profilio? Or is it considered a bad architectural model?? xx
I wouldn't put models in there, always more to scrutinize than praise, focus on putting your best artwork in there instead!
Hi, this is tech unrelated but I was wondering where you got your first drawing board from, I already have a t-square and I don’t want to buy a drafting board with a parallel bar. I saw one of your old videos that uses a drawing board without that and was wondering where you got it from.
Most of the parallel bars on drafting boards are detachable :) I was using one of the few boards in studio which are free for anyone to use. If you're going to Waterloo, they sell it internally at the school shop
hi what do you think about the dell xps 15 or dell g16?
What specs are you looking at? Typically I recommend the G16 over the XPS because it's more "robust" and capable of handling large workloads.
How do they calculate your average at UBC? Do they only look at your academic courses or all the courses you take in your grade 11 and 11 year? I have a 92 average for academic courses in grade 11, and a 94 average for all my courses in grade 11.
Both 12 and 11, with an emphasis on 12
What do you think about the ProArt series from Asus?
I would recommend gaming laptops over studio laptops as NVIDIA gaming drivers get updates faster and more frequently than studio drivers. Consider what makes the ProArt better than the alternatives (reference the checklist in the video), if there is a clear advantage, why not?
ASUS Rog Zephyrus G14 was the best laptop ive ever laid hands on UNTIL it randomly started deleting the wifi, blue screening, deleting files, etc. a year later. Idk what happened but yeah, everyone watching this please dont get a Asus like they said
Sucks to hear, the Zephyrus lineup was the most hyped during 2021/22 but quality control + longevity is always a gamble. What did you replace your ASUS with?
@@al3xxli yeahh such a shame 💔 I replaced it with the Dell XPS 15, works wonderfully
I have a hard time recommending the XPS because depending on stock they only have iris GPUs which are inadequate, but very happy for you to have found something that works :)

What cgpa is good for getting an aacceptance?
Each program has different requirements, I recommend you to do further research within the faculty you are applying for
I'm now 11th class what book i refer to read for architecture
All the D.K Ching books are worth it! They cover ideas which are digestable for those not in the program yet. Just make sure to read them through the way I mentioned and you'll have a comprehensive understanding
Your videos have been a lifesaverrr for me! Was accepted and am most likely attending UW arch in September, thankyouuuu :)
Love to hear it, see you around!
Hi, thanks for the video, it honestly helped a lot in seeing what UBC looks for. I can't seem to find an answer to this online, but do you know if UBC looks more at individual grades or the overall cumulative average? (assuming that each grade is above the minimum requirement)
Glad you enjoyed the video, most universities look at the cumulative average of your core courses. Looking at individual grades would make the process much more complicated in deciding who gets an offer who doesn't.
@@al3xxli Also, I know that UBC tends to stray away from regular Canadian universities in some of their admissions processes so I was wondering if you knew what this would mean in terms of the cumulative average in grade 11 courses. More specifically, do you know if that would that be a considering factor for UBC admissions?
@@klzhtux Not sure what you mean by straying away, they all work on the premise that Grade 11 marks determine if you get an early acceptance. Grade 12 marks are what determines if you get to keep that offer or not. All universities consider both Grade 11 and Grade 12 averages.
I have gotten late in accepting my calgary admssion offer as my deadline was 1st may.Can I still accept my offer by 8th may?
I'm not affiliated with the university, but for all universities typically you cannot accept after the deadline as your spot would have been given to someone else
Hi!! Amazing video 😊 For the art portfolio, is referenced art or for example, the Batman you used as an example, a bad piece of art work to add on to your portfolio? Is this type of art frowned upon or is it appropriate for applications?
It really depends on the level of detail and technicality showed, if you're demonstrating a high level of artistic skill go right ahead!
Fabulously organized! Terrific video! I agree completely about what a waste it is to get a service like a tutor for admission. This is really helpful info for people applying to architecture school. A close friend did it like you! She got in! Brilliant career! She studied architecture at UBC. Be well!
Thank you for the support! Very glad you enjoyed the content

For Waterloo University, I don’t know how long will the interview be?
20-25min interview with a panel of 2 professors and a graduate or undergraduate student
@@al3xxli thank you so much! Do I have to show all the pieces of my portfolio in the interview?
@@kentairitsu7658 Bring everything, but only present the ones you think are strongest! You won't have time to present everything while still having time left over for us to actually interview you
@@al3xxli thank you so much, this is really helpful for me!
Thank you for this video as it gave me a better idea of what a portfolio should look like. However, I am looking into applying for Architecture, Landscape Architecture, and Urbanism. Will the prompts and the portfolio outline look totally different from the one you applied for?
I'm not sure, but as a word of caution I would emplore you to check if the Landscape Arch and Urbanism degrees are accredited. An accredited Architecture degree covers both Landscape Arch and Urbanism. Accreditation is key, or else you'll be "wasting" your time.
So stupid portfolio. The lamp thing and the chick city pot were boring and void of any artistic touch. Reading from a script is bizarre, you are supposed to speak without it and show the fluidity and engagement in your presentation.
I was also planning to apply for Uoft but I wasn't sure how to make my portfolio but this definitely helped. I'm kind of curious if I'm able to ask what averages you had before applying to university?
Averaged around 95%, the cutoff is much lower at around 83% though, so not a huge issue for most applicants
Informative video, thanks
For the models is it okay to use pré-made items, for example I want to use a table mat for one of them (basically I mean do all need to be ‘raw’ such as only cardboard/foam/textiles)?
Any material works, it's even better if you show some creativity in material selection
Hi is the video interview like an actual interview where i chat with admission officers?
The video interview isn't live - you go through the interview questions through their portal and then the admissions officers watch it some other day. It IS a one-take though, so a 2min timer runs and as soon as it hits time, it stops recording. Aka - practice by yourself until you can hit the whole 2min perfectly
@@al3xxli also is the formal interview question the same as the one that they told us
@@furgansiyahov7296 That's on you to research and find out!
I like Chinese version
Quick question, would PowerPoint be okay to layout your your design projects?
Totally ok, I ended up putting everything into Google Slides because it was easier for a simple layout
What app did you use to create the slideshow?
Photoshop for the images, Slides/PPT to put everything together and export as a smaller file
thank you very much that will be helpful for my application to ubc sala in the fall 😊
Hi! Thanks for your video! Just wondering what kind of course you took in senior high school year that kind of match the major? I don't see physic and chemistry requirements on there but if I don't take any physic or chem will that affect the general impression of my application? Since I am doing very bad in science 🥲
btw, is there a early admission for this major? What is the overall timing of this major application process? Like we submit the personal profile at dec or jan? And start the creative test or interview at when? Thanks so much for the help!!!!
I'm not too familliar with the UBC program but I know that at Waterloo, physics is a MUST as we do structural calculations - think about architecture as a branch of engineering, having sciences will be beneficial for your application but if it's not your strong suit, focus on just one science (physics is most applicable, biology/chemistry are 99% redundant) and work on other aspects of your application to fill in your weakness in the sciences.
You'll have to do your own research for this one! I'm not affiliated with admissions at UBC so I don't know the specifics of each year.
@@al3xxlithank you thank you! Just one more small question to confirm-they will give you the video interview question before the interview right? 😂😂
@@sherlym.hconstantine5215 Yes, they should have it out at least a week in advance
Hello, I’ve got a question What would you say is the most important component of the application? Thanks for the video btw
The portfolio is always the main part - you can do meh on the written responses and get in, but if you have a meh portfolio then you're not competitive at all
@@al3xxli Thanks!
Thank you so much for this video!! I am applying next year and wanted to ask in your experience do Arch programs take grade 12 marks or 11 and which schools did you find the most competitive?
All university programs take Grade 12 marks - they can offer you a temporary offer based on your Grade 11 marks but if your G12 marks end up significantly lower they'll rescind your offer. UBC and Waterloo were most competitive, I've heard McGill is pretty competitive too. Everything else is quite easy to get into
Firstly, thank you so much for the video, it's awesome that you were able to put in all this work for students like me who are in need of guides!!! More specifically, would you recommend ivy league schools like UBC and Mcgill for this program? Is it better to play it safe or to go all in for the Bachelors Degree? Personally, i've been struggling into choosing what i should do since i know it's (often) a given to finish both a Bachelors and Masters in an Architecture Program so i've been thinking of focusing on something close by like Carleton ..? What do you think?
Glad the video helped! When thinking of your bachelors, choose whichever program allows for the most co-op internships - the goal in architecture is ALWAYS get more work experience than everyone else. If you're only thinking of those three universities, I would suggest you go for Carleton or McGill, UBC bachelors students are not very competitive against these other schools. Don't worry about what's a top ranked program what's not, in order to fail you actually have to try to fail
One more thing is try to avoid taking your bachelors and masters at the same place - Universities entice you by offering perks if you stay, such as a shorter program etc. but what you're doing is boxing yourself in and giving them easy money. Diversification in your education is very important! A good strategy is to start with a lower ranking program like Carleton to get a good base going, and then apply for the higher ranked schools like McGill, UofT, Waterloo for your masters.
@@al3xxli Thank you so much for answering so quickly! I will try my best to make good sense of all information you've provided. Happy new years and i wish you a blessed year <3
What would you say about carleton's program? (design specifically)
Based on what I have seen, Carleton students are not as graphically strong as other Universities, but they do offer a coop (albeit a limited one - architecture.carleton.ca/academic-programs/bachelor-of-architectural-studies-bas/asau-co-op) and seem generally well rounded. Wouldn't be a top 3 recommendation but still a good program Note: when I say graphically I mean the geometry of buildings designed AND the quality of drawings/renders etc.
Hello!! I've seen this video a while ago and was wondering if you could look over my past creative test and give me some feedbacks. I sent you PDF files through your email in your bio, I hope you could take some time to look over it :) Thank you!!!

Hi! I'm actually in the process of creating an online course (video series) about architecture applications and will be uploading free snippets of the course onto YT mid-November. Essays take up a portion of the course so you can look forward to that :)
@@al3xxli That's amazing! Thank you so much, Alex 🥺🥺
Hey, how did you use the BGM without getting copyrighted
The track falls under the "copyrighted without restrictions" category, meaning I'm free to use it as long as it's credited somewhere
Hi, thank u for your video! It was so helpful. Since I’m gonna apply UBC SALA on this year, I have an question about video interview, and it will be really greatful if you answer it!🫶🏻 I’m just wondering if I can put some photos or pictures while I do my interview. Thank you!
The intervew is done on their video platform, so you get one shot which is timed (I forgot how long, but it was really fast paced). If you'd like to show images you'll have to physically hold it up to the camera. Don't know if it has changed since then, you'll recieve information on practice recordings so you can try it out there. Good luck!
Hey Alex thank you Can i have your email please?
You can contact me at al3xli.arts@gmail.com

Oh boy do I have some updates on that...soon!
Hello, if I know 3D model skills like Sktech up or autocad, but I dont have design drawing skills, would it be enough do this? Did someone teach you to complete this test? Where is the tutorial of this test? How to do this test step by step?
Hi, there's no tutorial as it's testing your own design strengths and problem solving skills. It's going to be very difficult for you to get accepted without design drawing skills as the test measures creativity and conceptualization skills, not technical modelling and CAD skills. If you're in need of improving on your design skills, I will be launching a course in November.
Thanks for the info... I'm an international student, I just submitted my application today with UCalgary to study software engineering. Though, I am a graduate of Computer Science. What did you think I should look out for if I'm considered for that program?
Hi can i contact you if you don't mind?
Hi can I contact u aswell?
if you don't mind sharing, what was your top 6 average?
Don't remember the 6 courses exactly but I applied early with an average of ~95% and kept my conditional offer with a final average of ~92%
would the prompts be the same for landscape architecture as well?
I wouldn't think so, landscape architecture is similar in design but very different in terms of practice.
what is in the creative test?
It slightly changes per application season, but the core of it is what's shown in the video :)
