2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2: Jack of All Trades, Master of FUN!
I finally purchased a new truck to begin my new series of overlanding videos. This video is an initial review of my new platform, The 2024 Chevrolet Colorado ZR2.... spoiler alert...
This Truck is GOOD!
Big Thank you to the fine folks @MurrayGMBDN for such an awesome buying experience! Could not be happier with the entire buying experience, and most importantly.. the new truck!
FACTIONAL CORRECTION:
I call The engine a V4 In the video, it’s actually an inline 4….. probably said this because I comparing it to V8 and V6 in the video.

Hey just wondering after 5 months or so what your thoughts are on this tent still. i know its pretty much the best bang for buck you can get right now, but have you found anything that has changed you opinion of it at all yet? thinking of picking one up for my first RTT
Hey bro! I actually sold this tent and went to a go overland Canada expedition XL. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the tent, I just needed something bigger for my family. Will be doing an in depth review on the new one soon. But I still believe the vickel tent is one of the best bang for the buck, especially if you only need sleeping for 2
I believe the window down button is for water crossing emergency, can't risk hitting windows up. I wish it could be adjusted via software menu though up/down for regular driving and down only for offroading.

i am going to tell you tires would make a world of difference I put BFG K02 on my defender and the ride is night and day
I’ve been meaning to go to those for awhile…. Been focusing on the truck build and I am not a rich man 😂😂😂😂 heard a lot of good things though! Really wish they would come out with something wider than a 10 inch….
@@Headupthrottledown i have not noticed a difference over stock traction they ride more like a truck we do a lot of deep sand without issue and don't think I would go wider as they would add weight and would effect speed

Wow thank you!!
Chevy beast!
Hell yea! Thanks for watching and the comment bro!!!
Nic truck, I like the all windows down. All windows up would be nice but we can’t have it all!
@@davewilson8308 hahaha!! It is nice I just got big ham hands so it’s hard to do them all up at the same time with the switches 😂😂😂
I’ve read those GM trucks have a ton of quality issues .
@@scottanders5333 hey man! We are good so far *knock on wood* sub if you want to see updates I will post anything that goes wrong. I have think that’s been an across the board thing, after the chip shortage and labour strikes a lot of manufactures where playing catch up and I think some QC things slipped. Personally, my Chevy feels really put together. Interior isn’t too fancy but everything looks good feels solid and hopefully the powertrain is going to be solid since it’s been tested in a few other GM products for awhile.
That is true for every manufacturer now even Toyota. Now with Chevy/GM stepping up & Toyota stepping down the playing field has evened out. As a 2004 Toyota Tacoma owner I’m disappointed in the new version pertaining to quality & price. I’m definitely looking at replacing my old truck for a ZR2 Colorado.
The lawyers prevent auto up for all the windows at once.
@@thomasmazzola4760 lol. Yea that’s what I am hearing. Still annoying though
Good luck with it. My brand new 2024 colorado ZR2 Bison crapped out on me up in the mountains. Electronics went crazy and it died and WOULD NOT start.

Hey man, line I say in the video I’ve seen it get anywhere from 16mpg all the way up to 20mpg depending on condition. For pushing around 33 inch mud terrains, and all the crap I have attached to it…. It’s really not bad. Rolling resistance and aerodynamics make a huge difference, that’s why the z71 gets WAY better fuel economy. Thanks for the watch and joining the conversation!
Hey Devin! I too just picked up a 2024 ZR2 and am loving it as well! I have no complaints on the 4 banger either. I'll tell you what, it has more power than my 2017 Tacoma TRD Pro did with a V6, that motor was a dog! Thank you for sharing :)

I recently bought a 2024 zr2 in the harvest brinz3 metallic color 3 weeks back. I am about th buy some new either brinze or gold colored rhino or method brand 17" wheels. I go driving on weekends up on logging and forestry roads in northeast Tennessee/ southwestern Virginia and over in western North Carolina. Hopefully later on this fall I will go driving in the Daniel Boone national forest in eastern Kentucky and also down in north Georgia mountains by Clayton, helen and ellijay areas. Might also go drive in uwharrie national forest in north Carolina.
@@harolddenton6031 that sounds dooope! Let me know what you are going to for tires… I honestly am not in a big rush to get away from the 33s, I plan on doing some big cross North America trips, and gas in Canada is expensive. Same with the factory wheels….. I actually think they are one of the best factory rims I have seen and will probably keep them for awhile until I see something I like. I am very tempted to potentially add the hydraulic bump stops and the. After my overlanding gear is all mounted up, I need a winch bad. Riding solo not having a bumper mounted winch is something that I can’t have!!
@@harolddenton6031 I really want to try out the new KO3. Whenever I buy new tires my default has been KO2s. I also have heard really good things about about the wild peaks and might try them once the factory tires start to bald :)
Great review Devan
Great video! I picked up a 2024 trailboss last month (just hit 2K KM). Originally was comparing both options but was able to snag this one with all the packages (360 cam, towing, convenience etc) for 45k canadian which was quite a bit under MSRP! Looking to upgrade wheels/tires and proboably the suspension down the road. ZR2 looks phenomenal - looking forward to future uploads :)
@@user-hi8be7ol1m thanks my friend. I honestly think if I didn’t off-road us much as I do…. The trail boss is the perfect all midsize pickup truck. Decent offroad, better fuel economy, great looks, and 7500 lbs available towing.

All the windows back up can be a big safety hazard for people and kids with body parts hanging out windows!!! But say if drive into a lake or in high water and you need To row all the windows down before you loose power in your vehicle so you can escape before your vehicle goes under water I think this is the reason for this option! Which is very smart that GM did this!
@@jamesdarren9149 yea. Someone else said that was their reasoning. I think that they could have found a way to do it though… like you have to hold it like a normal window switch. Or even make it an option in the menu somewhere and it warns you to check your windows first.
Sickkk rig brother
@@ernieballsting thank you man!!! I am hoping the build comes along fast (just waiting on some components and caping supplies and I plan to really put this thing through its paces from what I’ve seen so far it might be a perfect platform for my family’s overlanding adventures!
The window down button is some saftey thing so you raise the back window and your kid get caught in it. Yes sounds dumb but that's what it is
……. As opposed to using the switch’s individually? Then maybe a double tap and a hold to go up….. so if someone yells “my arm” you let go and it stops…..
@Headupthrottledown I said it sounds dumb. Just their reasoning. Same reason why my tacoma has one touch up for the fronts but have to hold it to roll up the back.
Most people just call it the “fart” relief button. 😂

Yes!! A cute little family of deer :)
What brakes did you end up replacing your stock defender breaks with ? Love your videos, btw
Ah wow :) thank you!!! Nothing yet. Still stock. I am waiting to find a big break kit for these!!
100% agree with the breaks and I'm only at 700km on the '24 limited (not max)... It was my first ride out and they had me very shocked right at the start... they just feel weak, and that I have to press extra hard to get the machine to stop "quickly". They work, I'm getting used to it... but I'm guessing at one point I'll be looking at finding a better breaking solution
Have been looking for awhile… would love to do a big break kit! Let me know if you find anything and I can be the lab rat 🤣🤣🤣
I don’t think I wanna go that extreme with the smart shocks, but I bet they normal shocks that will make a difference of day and night compared to stock
I think once you feel the adjustability that’s on these smart shocks, it would be hard to ride anything else. It literally transforms the machine. If I wasn’t going to go the smart shock route, I definitely would be looking at a long travel kit with some custom length shocks from shock therapy.
@@Headupthrottledown I understand that and yes that would be great, but why I do not want to go that route is because I drive a lot 3000; km in one year I did and I know those kind of shocks do wearout/break like the Polaris and Hondas. So I’m not going to pay top dollar for a year or two and have a Brocken shock and then pay more.
@@meangrean hey! Those rebuild cycles recommendations are generally for people who are jumping/racing there machines….. I doubt I will need to rebuild mine before u would have to replace the stock components :) unless your driving your machine on the edge constantly, there is no way these shocks will see the same heat cycles that they would in a race application :)
@@Headupthrottledown that’s true too, but I drive a lot of logging Roads and back country trails usually once a week and like to take them at a bit higher speed without my filling to come loose.I was just on a whole sale for shocks website, and ther want 4-6k us. Wow they better be good
@@meangrean lol they are :) where you located? I let you take them for a rip. I have 2023 I’ve had it less than a year, and I just hit 4000km. So it was definitely a concern for me, but rebuildable is nice too…. Keep your old shocks on the shelf, it’s a 15 minute swap out and then you’ll be able to keep having top level suspension on your machine for as long as you have them :) they are also a true 2.5 shock, so they are quite beefy. I have calibrated mine for three settings, slow and soft for low gear cruising with the family, medium setting for trail riding where you still want some cushion, and an aggressive high speed set up for when you want to go fast and not worry about the bumps. It’s also crazy how you can calibrate them to reduce body roll and pitch, makes the machine feel much more stable when you want to get a little crazy 🤣🤣🤣
You are 100% right about the shocks. Around my business they work just fine, but going off road and over bumps and potholes they duck. About the brake mine work just fine. Yes you have ac and all window so yours is probably 400 pounds or more heavier so I could see your problem. About the front diff I do not have that problem as I have an XMR which has the electronic front diff lock. Funny thing is that the only reason the both of us did not get the commander was because of our wife’s.
lol happy wife happy life
@@Headupthrottledown No, Happy spouce happy house
Defenders are very short lived here in New Zealand. Gearboxes self destruct, steering racks failure, front diffs blowing all within 2 years. Beyond that chassis crack, engine dusting. The speedo cluster dies after hrs exceeded.
That’s crazy!!! The reason I switched from prostar to Rotax is there are guys who get like 20,000.00 miles out of them with only oil changes and belts. Do you think it’s a climate issue? Are they built in different places ?
Beautiful 😍
Thanks!!

Where is the stageing area
Let me know if you are planning on going! Maybe I can meet you there :) maps.app.goo.gl/GmXx2zqneyn1qy6cA?g_st=com.google.maps.preview.copy There isn’t really an official staging area, but this is where I would stage. It’s an old abandoned dirt road with pretty level grass on both sides. Just please be careful because it is between two homes with very lovely family’s with young kids :)
I like adventures
2024 they corrected that from what I’ve read. Polaris has true 4wd. They all should. Or at least the option to lock it.
Yea! I haven’t had the opportunity to try the smart lock yet, but everything sounds promising!!
I have the same unit except it’s a 2024 . I have just gotten past the break in period . I had total brake fade on long with major sqeeling . I’m starting to research this issue . Do you have any info on this . I love the machine but the brakes are my number one complaint. This is my first side by side . I have had Polaris quads and have never had issues braking in all types of conditions. Any info you have would be great ! Thank you for your video . Hope to hear from you
Hey… I don’t have this issue, but I’ve had similar problems on other things, and it simply was from corrosion building up on the rotors due to long periods of sitting idle after exposure to water! Thanks for your time :)
