    You are objectively wrong about Fanciulla. Despite the lack of showpiece arias the scene between Minnie and Johnson is unlike anything else in opera and the scene when she arrives to save him at the end... I like Turandot but I don't like how casually they throw away Liu.... and the end is kind of a letdown.

    Just realized my primary comment went to somebody else's post (I was SO inspired!!) but also want to write to you directly-- I feel like I've just found out a way to nerd out once more on music and perhaps even dabble in something else I've considered: composing! I think it's really time to get a keyboard. Well, after I spend the month of December committing to 4 concurrent writing projects. 😉 I'm a Music History/Theory major from a tiny liberal arts school, C '92. Listening to your analysis and 'let's make this all relatable, shall we?' approach has reminded me why I also looked into a Master's in Ethnomusicology! And why I sat for the Music version of the GMAT... I think that came and went. Anyhoo! Thanks for letting me feel so immediately at home! So excited to take my time and browse your trove of education and, doubtless, commentary and insights! I feel like I just won a lottery of some kind, truly. 💜

    I’d still like to know how I would be classified. Pretty sure I’m a contralto. As you mentioned in the description of the contralto, there are women who can get lower. My personal range is Ab2 to D5. Any time I stretch over D5, I lose my voice the next day. I’m most comfortable from C3 to C5.

    This was incredible fun to watch and listen to. I worked for a classical concert house, we had Diana Damrau, Renee Fleming and the likes on the stage and I had no idea there was so much vocal diversity. ^^ The contralto is amazing!! Thank you so much!

    I just watched (and greatly appreciated) your fach videos, scrolled through your list of videos, and found this. Wow. Thank you for sharing your story. Although not in music, my ‘world’ came crashing down when I was not yet 20 and the career that my parents had groomed me for, all throughout my life to that point, became no longer possible. I can completely understand what you said about a mental health issue being seen as less stigmatising than a vocal injury. Music is such a gift and I’m glad to see you renewed in outlook after your injury. Best wishes for the future. o7

    Gotta be honest - i'm not a huge fan of opera. I think it's beautiful - but in general the singing style bores me. Having said that - mad props to the people who can do it because I know it takes an immense amount of skill and practice. Thank you for putting these together to explain opera more to the lay person!!

    mmmm a few errors here. Bryn Terfyl is not a Verdi baritone (he's a bass baritone - his best role is the Dutchman), whereas Horostovsky arguably is (and you have him singing Verdi)?

    Thank you for this. I particularly loved the athlete analogy. I was surprised, though, by your choice of roles and singers. Why not Sutherland for a dramatic coloratura? She was the greatest who ever lived IMHO. And why no Verdi for dramatic mezzos? That is their bread and butter. Just curious.

      The real answer? I wanted this video to appeal to non-opera goers in my age group, so I looked for the things that appeal to me: 1) a clear video (HD if possible) and 2) an excerpt from a performance, not a concert. That rather narrowed my choices. 😉 Thank you for being one of the few who asked without judgment! ❤️

    'Fach' is also the word for a school subject like math or a language. I guess thats more what the word is aiming at. Different 'vocal subjects'.

    Wow. The grass is not, in fact, greener on the other side. This is a good lesson for those of us who feel like we wasted our life and talent by NOT pursuing something. Every industry has its gross side and it's REALLY good for people to know what those are. I'm sorry you went through all that but I'm happy for the growth and self-actualization you've achieved.

    Again, this is a great access to roles. Florez in "Una furtiva lagrima" I damn near caused an accident listening to Florez on the radio. That's when I ripped out my radio. It's really James Morris, not James Morries. Props for Blitch! We should talk. A low F for the basso profundo. When I was in college in the 70s, there were 7 of us with notes below that F. Later in my live I have sung tenor II for opera chorus and Lord Chancellor in IOLANTHE, Jailor in TOSCA, and Frederick in ALNM.

    You obviously hate the culture surrounding the production of classical music. Just make one video and save your audience the trouble of watching any of your productions. Or, put an essay up on Medium and save the bandwidth for those with more instructive attitudes. The supposed cultural sins that you rant about in your videos pertaining to classical music and opera are found in all other human endeavors if you would care to look. Take the example of prima donnas.

    I slightly disagree with you on a few points, but Barbara Bonney and "O babbino caro" are spot on. When I was a baby opera chorister I was next to a soprano singing Tosca and people asked me how I could stand the sound. Frankly, I wondered how anyone could hear her, since her voice was so delicate five feet from her. Then she sang Marguerite in FAUST and the chorus was placed in the balcony behind the audience. We had to hold on to keep from being plastered onto the back wall. I actually know a true contralto. Her name is Emily Geller. She could sing Don Giovanni, but could also sing Amneris. She has a problem: she is a dead-ringer for Hedy Lamarr, so it is hard for her to get the battle-axe roles even though she is a brilliant comedienne. Aside from that, didn't there used to be a lyric coloratura category? A friend of mine did Gilda and Adina before she got called into public service. At 70, she still has a ringing high E above high C, but only does that a church Cabaret Nights.

    Wonderful explanation! Funfact: „Fach“ does‘nt actually mean „pocket“ in German. It is more like „compartment“, for instance in a wardrobe. And a subject in school is a „Fach“ also.

    Compare the final line of Otello: Italian: "ah!... un’altro bacio..." English: "ah!... another kiss..." In English, the tenor sounds like a dying snake; "ssss." In Italian, that final "cio" (the last syllable) is his final breath. Also Götterdämmerung: German: "Ruhe, ruhe, du Gott!" English: "Rest , rest O god!" "Ruhe" is a word with more and deeper meanings than "rest": rest, repose, requiescence sleep peace, quiet silence, tranquillity, peacefulness, calm, stillness, quiet silence calmness, composure, composedness, imperturbabilit y. Furthermore, "Rest" is one syllable, but "Ruhe" is two, allowing "Ruhe" to capture that changing key that embodies the end of the gods, and the endlessness of her love. BOTTOM LINE: Sure, you can translate, but in doing so, you lose some of the meaning. At best, it's like seeing a digital image of an illuminated manuscript, as opposed to seeing the gold shining on the borders of the parchment'

    I wish I had had this in music school, but the internet wasnt evolved yet. Might still be singing today as it would have boosted confidence to know my type. My vocal coach was pushing me into mid-second tenor range so I think he was trying to set me up to get work… shoulda stuck with it. Oh well. I did more musical theater and “Bring him home” from Les Mis was one he had me learning. (First time my wife heard me sing it she was… well, let’s just say it was a good night.) Thanks for this.     Having had a chance to watch your other videos, I've discovered you have a very biased attitude on this topic. But for those who really care about the topic: Besides the toxic cultural environment, the greatest problem with furthering classical music as a human endeavor is that our education system in the U.S. fails to teach the fundamentals of music to all students at an early age. First graders should be introduced to the topic. For some odd reason, we introduce kindergarten kids to number theory but music theory is considered too esoteric. Or perhaps it's a matter of teacher training. Here's an example of the topics considered to be basic to musicianship. However, no one will go very far in learning to sing or play a musical instrument without any skills in sight singing. The understanding of the phenomenon of gold medal elitism is best displayed when the sociology of child prodigies is examined closely. Quite often (more than 50% of the time) child prodigies burn out in the pursuit of lofty goals set by overbearing parents who are too interested in the product the child is putting out rather than ensuring their beloved family member has happy childhood memories to look back on as they develop a personality of their own making.     I decided, definitively, not to go into classical music pretty early on. Despite that, I joined a national youth orchestra. The bullying, passive-aggresiveness, competitiveness, putting-others-down, name-dropping, elitist environment was like a high school times a hundred. As someone who was there as an amateur with no professional ambitions, I was seriously looked down upon. Some of these young musicians (around 14-20) already had an unhealthy relationship with alcohol or self-harm, and who can blame them, in an environment where whether someone was worth the chair they sat on was one of the most popular conversation topics... ...so I went into academia. I must be a masochist.

    Character tenor not a pretty voice? I guess I have an unpopular taste in this case. They are less emotional and simpler than leading tenors, but in my opinion they have lots of charm, though in different way than leading tenors. Although leading tenors have beautiful romantic arias, they are usually too serious. Character tenor is a lovely voice for more jolly, funny melodies. In my opinion there is too short supply of this voice type. Maybe I like this sort of tenor that much, because the first character tenor I've heard was Pedrillo from "Abduction from seraglio" and his role was almost as prominent as the leading tenor - Belmonte and I like his singing part more than Belmonte's. Also ironically in the first production of this opera I've seen, the singer who played Pedrillo had far more beautiful voice than the singer who played Belmonte. It wasn't in all productions though, in the second production it was quite the opposite - the one who played Belmonte was great, while I didn't like the one who played Pedrillo (it also proves that each voice types have better and worse singers), but still I think Pedrillo is more appealing, so it is important to me that this character should have a pretty voice. Usually character tenors are for more episodic roles, so I get why some people say it doesn't have to be a pretty voice. However, in my opinion this voice type is underrated. Tenor is such a shiny, youthfull voice, it really does have a potential to sing, funny roles beautifully. But for some reason, more desired tenors are usually very melancholic.

    I am 9:24. Many many years of training. It’s not over till I’m singing 😂😂 I don’t do it anymore though - I teach in a primary school but you should hear our school sing. They all put on a fake opera voice. Sounds ridiculous 😂😂😂
