My Flight Was Going Great Until a Major Mistake Changed Everything
What happens when Mother Nature throws everything she's got at you? Join me as I set out to fly the Hawkwagon, my trusty Cessna 170, from Alaska to the lower 48-a journey that's supposed to take just two days....But relentless bad weather turns it into a four-day ordeal filled with unexpected challenges and tough decisions.
Navigating low ceilings, freezing fog, and ever-changing conditions along the Alcan Highway, I face critical choices, like abandoning the iconic "trench" route due to deteriorating weather and instead crossing the continental divide-a move that pushes me beyond my comfort zone.
Throughout the journey, frustration mounts as delays pile up, and I begin to question whether I'll ever reach my destination. Yet, amidst the setbacks, I rediscover what this adventure is truly about-the journey itself.
Just when it seems like things are finally turning around, an unforeseen crisis threatens to derail the entire trip. Faced with a pivotal decision, I'm left wondering: Is this the end of the journey, or just another hurdle to overcome?
Don't miss this gripping episode to find out how quickly plans can change when you're chasing the horizon.

Last Float Plane Adventure Before Lake Hood Freezes Over!
มุมมอง 3K21 วันที่ผ่านมา
Today, I'm taking Phil the float plane out for one last quick spin over Lake Hood before Alaska's winter freezes everything solid. After last year's fiasco of missing the window and having to leave Phil beached on the shore through freezing temps and record snowfall, I'm not making that mistake again! This is my final float plane adventure of the season at the world's busiest seaplane base. It'...
Goodbye Alaska, Hello to the Most EPIC Adventure Ever!

Fishing season and mountain biking season are officially over here in Alaska. That’s a tough pill to swallow because, to be honest, I’m just not ready to call it quits. This summer was short. Way too short, and I feel like I didn’t get half the things done I wanted to. So now it's time to load everything into the Hawkwagon and head out on one of the biggest adventures I’ve ever done. In this adventure, my wife and I finally got a rare night away alone since becoming parents. My wife is all about glamping, so I decided to take it up a notch. We flew our helicopter deep into the heart of the Alaskan wilderness, where the only neighbors were mountains and wildlife. And yes, I brought a hot tub! We spent the night soaking under the stars, enjoying a spa-like experience in the m...
I brought a Float Plane to a Fish Fight

A few weeks ago Josh and I flew down to scope out some potential fishing spots while my buddy Chip was in town from Austin. As we were showing Chip around we found a river that was STUFFED with salmon. After doing some research, the stream was legal to fish. With that, we waited for the next good weather window and took Phil the Float Plane down to see if we could catch our limit of Reds. Socke...

Every flying day is a learning experience! 👍😎
Filmed in Wilmington North Carolina
Nope. Never been there.
@ lol, I meant Dawson’s Creek was filmed there. You asked in the vid.
@ ohhhhhh! Thank you! I didn’t think it was filmed in Dawson creek, but I’m wrong a lot!
😊 ❤ 1:09
I need to mirror your trip soon in a PA-11. Slightly slower. 😂
Always carry an extra credit card in a separate pocket
The irony here is that I USUALLY do. 3 weeks prior to this trip my 2 year old “relocated” my wallet and I had to grab that extra card from the plane until I found where she had hidden my wallet. I never put the card back in the plane.
You can find excitement in Dawson Creek!but life is like you make it!
I’ve never bought anything from you tube. But tell me how to get your coffee
Let me know when you get K-cups! Please!
Dihedral is what?
Dihedral is the upward angle of the wings (or tail surface) from a horizontal axis. Dihedral makes aircraft more laterally stable, which means they are more stable when they roll left or right.
Geoff has the best videos!!❤❤
Enjoying the videos as I commented last time and yes, it’s about the journey!
Love the vids
What gorgeous views over the AlCan! Thanks for sharing your decision making process and the mistakes along the way. It's ALWAYS about the journey!
12:55 It's about the Journey!!! Yes!
I loved this video from the first second. Scenario, camera work and text are done so professionally . My support and respect
Thank you very much. Really appreciate you taking the time to watch.
I fly floats in Southern Québec. Less beautiful, but flying floats is really fun there too!!
It's always fun to fly floats, no matter where you are!

What do you do for money?
Very cool video my friend. I look forward to following the adventure.
Thank you for watching Corey!! I'll be down in your neck of the woods soon :)
Husband win!!!! We're moving to Alaska next year and now I gotta do this!
Hahah it was a win and now she loves to camp! You're going to LOVE living up here!
Get that flight review done and jump in the HawkWagon!
Great video man, you got a new subscriber. Very inspiring
Thanks for watching! I'm always looking for ways to make life more adventurous, and I'm glad it's inspiring others!
Glad to hear Geoffs storey. Go Geoff! ✈️
Thank you for watching! It's a great story and we're so lucky to have Geoff on this journey for a few more days.
Love your content, I’ve got a similar story about flying and how I got into it as well, I’m in NW Alberta , if you’re ever following the Alcan highway and need a place to stay I’m in Grande Prairie Alberta. I just sold my 170B and just bought a Amphib , can’t wait for next year to go do mountain lake exploring ! Keep the videos coming. Ps I’d love one of your hats !
Thank you so much! In the latest video I actually went right over the top of Grand Prairie. We stayed in Dawson Creek, then Springbank. I'll keep you posted if we come back up your way in summer. I'd love to see the amphib! Also, working on getting the hats and other merch lined up for around the first of the year.
Big Johnstone Lake is so badass. I want some land out that way!
Big Johnstone is really awesome, this was at Little Johnstone... and I know of a parcel for sale there. You'd need to talk to Kurt, but it's on the market.
another nice video THANKS
Thank you so much!
Another Alaska flyer with a friend who chews gum with his mouth open. Stop it. 😡
Sorry, I'll pre-screen my friends with a pack of gum going forward.
If been 5 min plus into this and have no idea where your starting from. Be nice to include a map at the introduction so we know where you are.
You’re right, I should have included a map sooner, it’s hard to follow otherwise!
@AdventureAK ok. Where is the airport you departed? . I like most TH-camrs have a short attention span.
On this journey I departed out of Merrill Field in Anchorage.
I believe this is all unacceptable behaviour. 🫡
@@KevinPaulineNeal haha. Good one! I agree!!
I’m currently the “too busy” guy saying no to every opportunity. Thanks for the video! It’s time for me to say yes to things!😊
I was that guy for years. Trust me, make the time. It's worth it. Thanks for watching :)
I love hearing Geoff's story. It's great to see people winning their battles.
As you know, because you know Geoff, he's an incredible human. I'm so incredibly lucky to get to be his friend, and to have him in my life.
Really enjoyed this first part of your adventure. Thanks for posting
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for sharing that Geoff!! You are so brave! Both of you please Keep saying Yes to adventure! ❤
Thank you John for helping me get that story out to everyone. :)
I watched the whole video i didn't hear you say anything about little Johnstone. Did i miss it. Is Kirk the guy that crashed the maule at Spencer glacier in 2006?
No idea 🤷♂️ might have to ask him. Most of the time I don’t name the places I fly out of respect for the other Alaskan aviators.
What engine do you have in phil?
Phil has an O-320-A2B with Borer prop. He's not the sportiest, but he gets the job done ;)
Like your shades. What model of oakleys are they?
Thank you! They're the Oakley Holbrook. I've got far too many pairs of them, but these ones in particular have the Prizm Shallow Water Iridium Polarized lens that I love to use for float flying. I'm a bit of a sunglasses addict, but I justify it by saying that I always have the right pair for the day.
Amazing views, nice 😎 bro. Great editing
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video!
Helicopter
Yeah, you are not getting any policy discounts this year…😂 Amazing place!
No kidding! It was a tight squeeze, but she was wrong! I told my insurance provider to never watch any of my videos :)
Great shot! You make it look easy.
Ha! That was actually my friend Josh flying! He does make it look easy! He is a FAR better pilot than I am.
@ I have been getting a few instructed hours in a Citabria. I want to get some bush flying in when I come up but this spring I’m spending most of my time clearing some Alders. I have a dream of one day putting a small strip on my 80 acres. Looks like I can do about 2,300ft.
Yes get the Grumman Widgeon. They are a great airplane for Alaska.
It is VERY high on my list.
Great video! FYI I have some cool pics of your plane.
Thanks! I'd love to see them! If you're on instagram I'm instagram.com/therealbrettbaker or if you hit the "about" section my email address is in there. :)
@@AdventureAK I left you a message on IG. Keep up the great content!👍✈️
did I hear a hint that later this winter you will show some snow sky adventures?
Yep! We're putting Phil on skis to be able to go enjoy the snow. It's going to be a great winter!
another nice video THANKS
I'm glad you liked it!
I got just under 50 hours on floats in the 170 this summer. I would have flown more but weather and work made it tough. Hopefully ski season will be awesome this winter.
The weather was tough this summer. 50 hours is honestly a great amount of time. Ski season should be epic this year :)
Another super fun video... It's so much fun to watch Phil fly! Can't wait to see him on ski's! 🎿
Thank you!!! I’m excited for skis too! I'll try to get some footage as soon as possible!
Wow, I rarely get so excited about watching a video on TH-cam! You are doing something incredible and truly living life to the fullest. I’m eager to fulfill my childhood dream of flying, and I genuinely believe that Alaska is a magical place to make it happen. Hopefully, in the near future, I’ll find a way to make it a reality!
Thank you for taking the time to watch. I'm really trying to share my love of aviation and my love of Alaska with people just like you, so I'm glad you enjoyed it. Alaska is magical. I'm not from here originally, but just like you, I realized that Alaska was the place to truly enjoy aviation. Keep following that dream. Make it a reality. Let me tell you that it's 1000% worth going for. Until then, hopefully I can keep motivating you from the cockpit of my plane, showing you what you have to look forward to. Thanks again for watching. Seriously.
Damn, dude! That's one heck of a trip and I'm so here for it!
It's going to be a LONG trip. Can't wait to show you what I find along the way!
Where are you?😅
Not in Reno any longer :)
@@AdventureAK I see because a lot of snow❄️⛄️⛄️
Wow!! I am from Washington State, but I was up where those dirt bikers and off-road vehicles were last month. Hard to beat that location for anything outdoors. We brought a tent sauna and used it on the glacier water as well. This video just convinced me to buy another plane ticket to Alaska! Great video!
That's awesome! Glad you're enjoying the videos! Maybe we'll run into you next time I'm out there.
What an epic adventure! I just got back last weekend camping with the family on the eastside. Fished the upper Owens and Hot Creek and landed a nice brown…maybe 16”. Enjoy!
I'll reach out to you here shortly. I fished the east walker a couple weeks ago. That's incredible that you pulled a 16" brown out of hot creek! I think the most I've ever gotten out of there is a sub 12" native brown.
