Voyez la sous son éventail (Kate Lindsey)
Lindsey's Nicklausse is transformative no matter what production she's in. I'm still in love with the new Salzburg production and her iteration of the character in it. Here we have a particularly sassy Nicklausse taunting Hoffmann and bothering "Olympia," who in this case is a young actress on the brink of her career, and very much not amused by Nicklausse's antics. This production frames the act as a flashback to several years ago, with Hoffmann and Niclausse also just getting started on their film careers, Hoffmann an aspiring writer/director, and Nicklausse a budding composer. You can imagine the mischief these two get into in their younger years--some more innocent, some less so, as we will see in later clips. Compared to the more mature, measured versions of them we see in Act II's Violin Aria, here Nicklausse is a sassy troublemaker who's not yet quite aware of his feelings for Hoffmann and thus is making a painful attempt to be his wingman. Hoffmann is not having it, but we can't help but bop along with this fun and energetic number.
From the Salzburg 2024 production, performed by Kate Lindsey and featuring Benjamin Bernheim and Kathryn Lewek.

Remember when I said I would never shut up about this opera? Well here I am years after seeing it for the first time and I still think about it almost daily. You'd think it would be illegal for a production to be so queer. There is SO MUCH gay and genderfluid energy on this stage!!! Plus it is a simply gorgeous production with a phenomenal cast. Here is one of my favorite arias from the opera, ...

Remember that Rossini opera where the mezzo gets the girl? Here's Malcolm's introductory aria as he prepares to reunite with his beloved. Perhaps not as much of a bop as Rossini's more famous mezzo arias, but this one still brings in the charm as the dashing young chieftain swears his devotion to the lovely lady of the lake. Enjoy Barcellona's velvety voice as she absolutely delivers this aria....

Autumn is Idamante season for me. So I need to watch this opera again. The quartet posted earlier this year is one of my favorite parts of this opera; this trio is my second favorite, my favorite being a duet that will undoubtedly be posted in time. Ponelle's staging isn't probably the most profound but it is so near and dear to my heart and so lovingly intricate I go back to it again and again...

If you caught the recent Salzburg stream of their new Hoffmann, you’ll likely fall into one of two camps: those that despised it, and those that adored it. I happen to fall into the latter category. Director Mariame Clément (who also did a really great Cendrillon not long ago that I should probably post about), gives us an insanely detailed modern production wherein Hoffmann is a rising film di...

What is it about Kadurina's Muse/Nicklausse? Her presence? Her expressions? That outfit? Her voice? The answer is: yes. I wish this performance got more recognition. Kadurina is in my Top 10 List for Nicklausses. I love her interpretation (again, aside from the ending, though she even manages to handle that with flair). Here, the Muse introduces themself and pledges their eternal devotion to Ho...

There's something inexplicable about Kadurina's performance of this role. Her Nicklausse is definitely one of my favorite interpretations, despite the questionable staging of the ending of this production. More Hansel & Gretel? Sure, why not. As before we have these two lovely divas playing the iconic siblings in this sweet, innocent scene. Such a beautifully simple production and it really helped me to understand this aria better. I love how the scene focuses on the love of art. The love she sings about is the love of creating music not romantic love. I love how Hoffman resists because he’s not ready to give up on romantic love yet. I love that Nicklaus wears a wreath to remind the audience that they are the muse. A lot of directors don’t quite know what to do with this aria and what kind of love is being addressed. It’s refreshing to see a production where everyone knows exactly what the message and focus of the aria. It really clarified this aria for me and made it my new favorite. Thank you for posting this and bringing attention to great performances that refresh old classics.

I love Kate Lindsey! This production in particular, I really felt the emotional complexities. The unrequited love (both romantic and artistic), the fear, the pain. This production really captured how a love of art and a love of a person can overlap and conflict. Hoffman was distracted from the music by Octavia but when Nicklaus put on her robe it was a reminder that Octavia also inspired Hoffman’s music. The muse feels abandoned but also takes on the part of the lover and Hoffman comes back because ultimately art is his only true love.

They’re all talented singers but only Nadine Sierra and Elza Van Den Heever can act at all. Matthew Polenzani and Alice Coote weren’t awful in this particular scene because it fits their slightly mopey acting but there was no nuance. No sense that Idomeno is hurt about sending Idamante away, no feeling that Idamante is torn between wanting his father’s approval and staying with Illia. I would have greatly preferred that the Met record the production with Kate Lindsey and Frederica Lombardi, because they are incredible actors in addition to incredible singers. I see new things in the characters they play and they bring the relationships to life.
