The Tolka Polka is a masterpiece written by the legendary Donal Lunny of Bothy Band, Planxty and Coolfin fame. The third part is fantastic and gnarly and confusing. Breaking it down into 5/8, 6/8 and 2/4 helps it make more sense. I show you how.

Cross Picking Challenge #2 for Tenor Banjo
Beautiful Polka
Thanks a million - Finally a lesson on polkas. I love polkas but used to play them with downstrokes and could never play them at session speed. Much easier to play the full notes at speed with up/ down strokes but now have to re-learn the fast note groupings of notes for every tune I know.
All downstrokes is very challenging!!
Thanks for this enda, as a guitarist I’ve struggled to back the 3rd part in this tune and have counted it so many different ways to make it land each time I relearn it. the way you’ve broken it down has helped immensely! I’ll not be caught out next time it’s called at the session (which seems to be relatively often here in NZ)
Is a great tune! The TH-cam videos I watched of folks playing it, the guitar playing was often a bit mental!!
I’ve always loved this tune, the next challenge is how it’s played the last time around (in the live recording by Donal) when you use the pushes in all 3 parts not just the third part, a genius trick. I might do a video explaining my take on it, I’m glad you’re expanding this tune into the repertoire of more people. Excellent work as always.
Thanks James
Thanks Enda! Yeah, the third part warps the brain a little - like when you miss the beat in the intro to a song and the singer starts where you didn't expect them to.
Haha happens to me more than you might think!!
Lovely playing love the sound of that Framus
Lovely tunes and playing
Excellent video. What would a good practice regimen look like in half an hour . Scales for a bit, go over song you’ve been working on and then approach a new song?
In a nutshell, yes! And remember when practicing a tune or a song to pay attention to any sections that are sticky, and work on those slowly
I love it
Thank you! I am in Australia and mentoring 2 young ladies on fiddle. I have played this many times in sessions on button box, but never caught it all. My proteges are showing an interest in O'Carolan. I have just sent this vid to them. We are working entirely by ear, I cannot read a note.
Please stop doing the jerky zoom-in zoom-out.
Superb! Cheers.
Cathy is dead cool, she's a typical real Irish country cailín in a cool way. Great company. I love her playing percussion, the Bodhrán and the Bones.
Are y'all playing with a guitar pick?
Yes indeed!
It's called Top it Off. Good stuff!
Usually I love your videos, but this time I have got to tell you you need to do your homework. It is not bluegrass and at the least it might be considered Old-Time style when played as a reel, but it originated in Europe and it might have its roots all the way back in Germany at the ti.e of Mozart and slowly reworked by fiddlers in the British Isles, before it made it to the Western colonies. Bluegrass started in the mid 1900s, this tune is almost 250 years old.
You’re correct of course. I realise that I did introduce this a bluegrass reel in a rather definitive sense. Whereas I know it first and foremost as a hornpipe from this side of the pond. I was I n “TH-cam” mode I guess! Trying to balance entertainment with education
110bpm @ what beat per minute? In 4/4 time 110bpm is medium slow as those beats are of course crotchets. That's the point of time signatures. 4/4 = 4 crotchet beats per bar. If you start counting the beat as a minim though, then obviously 110bpm becomes very fast, as it is of course now actually 220bpm. 110 minims per minute equalos 220 crotchets per minute. So: BPM in 4/4: crotchet beats per minute. 1-2-3-4. In 4/4: 60bpm is a ballad 90bpm is a medium/slow piece 120bpm is classic disco, not too fast, not too slow. 180, 240, 300bpm: bebop, Charlie Parker etc, becoming blindingly fast. Donna Lee.
I have so much to learn. I use a metronome app and I put in 110 and this came out!
Great playing. Your books are also inspirational. Question: why the capo on the first fret? Thanks ❤
I had just had a re-fret and had a buzz when tuned open!! Fixed now
What is the in ear? Metronome?
AirPod. I’d been learning new songs for a festival set!
Yeeeeah, not the best idea for a total beginner 😅 Thanks a lot.
Keep the bluegrass tutorials coming, love them
the god of the tenor banjo world. just unreal as always.
First part sounds a little like muirshin durkin
Fair nice 👍
Thanks for this Enda - going to pop over to the soundslice later to check out the extra lessons there. Also, cannot recommend the extras you get with Enda's patreon enough, the lessons in soundslice, the community in discord, it's all brilliant stuff.
Anyone know where i can get tabs for a reel called oak tree (banjo
It look like a fry pan
Do you prefer a plectrum banjo?
For certain work yes, the tone and sustain is fantastic
Hi Enda, great video! What head do you use on your vintage banjos? I hear a very tight renaissance head is standard but curious what your thoughts are.
I like the Renaissance heads a lot and a probably go a tiny bit slacker than normal just for some warmth to the tone
Hello, Mr. Scahill. I also have a banjo that has as many frets as yours. Do you get regular strings .012 - 0.036 inches and detune it, then put the capo on to achieve the standard GDAE tuning? This is what I have done, but I wonder if perhaps I should use a different gauge, and I capo at the third fret, not the second, as you did. I worry that affects the tension too much. Do you have thoughts on the pros/cons on this type of setup? Thank you.
I use 12/18/26/32 and capo on fret 2. Works very well with a little re tuning if I play it fully open
Perfect 👍
Swinging a reel = hornpipe?
That actually works as a concept. But a hornpipe is quite a different rhythmical tune, and generally slower!
The green mountain cuz of maid behind the bar
Why are Japanese musicians so good?? And especially at Irish music.
They have a deep respect for the music and treat it with great reverence. I think they practice with that in mind
@IrishTenorBanjo They make the best quality products too. They could be your full time band Enda, ye all work well together.
Sounds so good!
Just saw O’Jizo at the Goderich Celtic Festival this past weekend. What a wonderful surprise.
Great tune. Makes a great stand alone tune. It’s a set in itself.
Again this should be played at hospitals to bring people out of there sockness
Absolutely just out of this world . Them triplets are cleaner than bleach
Haha that’s a new way to describe them 😂
I don't care about the leg bro amazing picking on that their banjo keep it up.
Got me
A bit of Galweigan leg 😆
So If I bought either ,would I sound like that?
Yes. All the triplets are pre-installed 😂
