How to render beeswax

An easy tutorial video on processing wax from your beehives. Wax is a by product of beekeeping and can come from wax cappings after extracting, burr comb from the frames, or just old frames that need to get recycled and swapped for new. Wax can be used to coat things like cutting boards and work benches or plastic foundations for the bees. Candle making is another great use for the wax. 00:00 I...

    • @lakeviewapiary
      @lakeviewapiary 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's really hard to get them to draw when no flow. You can add 1:1 feed and that may get them to draw wax but they will also make honey out of it.

    • @lakeviewapiary
      @lakeviewapiary 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, I move them to a different spot in same yard. Just for the sake of ease. It's easier to move the nuc then the double deeps. Just keep an eye on the population. If a noticeable amount of bees go back to the original loc: -Boost it with frames of capped brood and honey from another hive OR -swap its position with any other strong hive. They will equalize. But remember. When building the nuc, most of the bees will be nurse bees that were attached to the brood frames, not foragers.

  • @scottreese5492
    @scottreese5492 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You are 100% correct, especially on the "no foundation between honey comb frames", someone said you can checkerboard comb and foundation to draw..... 100% WRONG! They will do exactly as you said. When i find any getting too fat i trim it down, put it on outside wall and work comb in place. Best method ive found forbuiding comb is like you said drop between brood , or pull 1 comb up in middle of box of foundations. If no supers comb available, cut wax out of deep frame and rubberband it into medium or shallow frame

    • @lakeviewapiary
      @lakeviewapiary 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for supporting this method. It is the absolute worst when they build put into the undrawn frame. Such a hassle. Thanks for checking in. Have a good weekend.

    Are u saying that the colony will swarm with a virgin queen?

    • @lakeviewapiary

      Is there a strategy to prevent an "after swarm with a virgin" queen? Thx

    • @lakeviewapiary
      @lakeviewapiary 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @davidsoloninka7742 yes. Killing all but 2 swarm cells in the hive. BUT then you need to go back a week later and kill any additional emergency cells. Remember, even though you removed the queen, there are still eggs and young larva available to make emergency cells. When I first remove the queen and kill all but 2 qcs, I like to put those qcs in the bottom box as not to destroy them the next week (they may fuse the cells to the frame bars below). There's no chance of that in bottom box since there is plenty of room from bottom board to the lower frames.

    Generally, if I am expecting to do a split, I bring an empty box, bottom, and cover. If I can't find the queen in a reasonable time, I split the hive and put the covers on both. I then do other work in the bee yard and come back in about 15 minutes and listen to both. The quiet one, of course, has the queen so I have halved the search. If I still have problems, I'll split the quiet one as well and put 5 frames in each box. Again, do some other work and come back in 15. At that point, the "quiet" one is only 5 frames and I can usually find her.

      Are they actually damaging the wood or just the wax? I do get evidence of some wax damage from ants, but never enough that was a concern. It only seems to happen when the supers are wet just after extraction. Do you leave your drawn supers out for the bees to clean before storing long term?

    • @lakeviewapiary

      Yes, that is so easy. I've done it. It just takes so much wax to get the level that high. Also, for me anyway, when dipping, I get less frames per pound. If anyone doesn't mind those 2 things, absolutely dip. It is indeed quite a bit easier.

    How did you handle the honey frames that were drawn out too far?

    • @lakeviewapiary
      @lakeviewapiary ปีที่แล้ว

      Avoidance is really the best way, but if a new frame ends up next to an open nectar frame and they just continue drawing it out into the empty space, I take the undrawn frame out and put the over drawn frame next to a proper frame. It gets smooshed a bit and is messy. Again, easier to just avoid that situation and make sure undrawn frames don't go next to open nectar frames.

      I don't do swarm trapping. I will, however, retrieve one of my own that I failed to keep in the hive. Our winter here in Jersey seems to be lingering a bit. Hopefully, soon, I will post videos of actual hands on tasks in the yards. Thanks for stoppin by. Much appreciated!

    Is this about the same thing as drop ceiling panels

    • @lakeviewapiary
      @lakeviewapiary ปีที่แล้ว

      Different drop ceiling tiles are made from different materials. I just did my basement and they were made of pvc. I would be concerned that other tiles have a mix of different materials and I wouldn't be comfortable using them.

    Thanks for the video. I’m looking forward to meeting up soon and getting local bees from you. This was our first winter, two of the three hives made it so far. 👍

      That's awesome! If those 2 hives are well populated now, and you keep an eye on the stores, my money is on you having 2 hives coming out of winter. I look forward to meeting you as well. Thank You much, for your support!

    I had a small hive find one of my empty hives. I had wax paper, sugar, and the same moisture board as you used. The little bees corpses were soaking wet. As a side note, from Sept to Nov, my little swarm made 1 1/2 frames of honey.

    • @lakeviewapiary
      @lakeviewapiary ปีที่แล้ว

      Did the small swarm die out on you and are they the bees you had dead and soaked? I'm sorry, it's a little early for me yet lol. Are you in support of MBs or did they not work out for you?

      @@lakeviewapiary The bees were in a cluster between frames. They are wet and moldy. It was a small hive. They survived longer than I thought they would. I put wax paper and sugar directly on the frames. A spacer with a ventilation hole. Moistureboard and the lid. I am pro moisture absorbing.

    • @lakeviewapiary
      @lakeviewapiary ปีที่แล้ว

      I wonder if when they die out, moisture accumulates due to no bees circulating air. Perhaps the bees are part of the circulation. Now that I think of it, when I get a dead out, there is almost always mold.

      @@lakeviewapiary Thanks for your help. I forgot to mention. The swarm that lived in my hive put themselves in an empty hive at the back end of the property this last September. This hive has a frame of honey in it. I am leaving the hive as it is. If a new swarm finds it, will they clean up the moldy bees or should I scrape them out?

    • @lakeviewapiary
      @lakeviewapiary ปีที่แล้ว

      @itsokaytobeclownpilled5937 depending where you are, I would close up that hive until you are ready to put it in use (critter proof). And yes, although not necessary, I would clean the dead bees out as best I can. They get pretty stinky, and I'm not sure if that would deter a potential swarm from moving in.

      I honestly would not trust ratchet straps. The bear will just destroy the hives to get what it wants. I think my hives fared well because there were no straps. I have heard some pretty bad stories.
