The new CRV (2wd) in Japan is powered by a hydrogen fuel cell and battery and costs 8 million yen (a standard Toyota landcruiser costs around 5 million). The ICE version of the CRV is no longer available. There are no hydrogen filling stations on any motorway in Japan, so a driver would have to get off the tolled motorway to fill up, that is if they can find a hydrogen filling station. Where I live the nearest hydrogen station is around 80km away, so further than the maximum distance a fully charged battery can go. There are otherwise large areas in Japan that do not have a hydrogen filling station. It is an SUV type car but has no ability to go off road nor drive in slippery conditions. Thus essentially any owner is unable to travel very far due to being tied to the availability of filling stations. The whole thing seems pointless.

I would advise against a Ford Escape. I have a 2020 Escape. It averages 3 recalls a year, we are at 12 recalls now. At 39k miles the AC compressor failed, which is going to cost me almost $3k because all parts have to be ordered from Ford. I have spoken with Ford, and their stance is that I should be happy to give them an additional few grand a year on a $25k vehicle because they are to big to fail and couldn't care less about the quality. So every year my car loses value, but the cost rises. The car is 4 years old, 12 recalls and 1 failed AC compressor. Be careful with this vehicle.
