    I think the idea to have kernel level anti-cheat is just a bad idea overall... I'm sure there are cleaver ways to do it without compromising the players computers security / stability... like server side anti-cheat powered by AI to detect fraud plays... sure, we lose instant cheat detection, but I think the pros far surpass this downside

    good question. in every possible way. it is not an operating system anymore. very soon it will be subscription based. very soon you will have to pay for using your computer that you bought. PS: i don't think Microsoft will drop OEM keys right away. most probably OEM keys will come with PC at the store. and if you installed Windows from ISO there is will be subscription instead of key activation

    You are the first person who has said that programs can be installed on an external drive. If I am understanding you. I am newish to Linux, I've played with it from time to time through the years but last week I bought a laptop and installed Ubuntu on it. I also got an external hard drive thinking that the internal drive isn't that big and that I would install programs on that instead of the internal drive. BUT everyone says that it isn't possible on Linux. AM I understanding you that it can be done?

    • @AverageNerdTalks
      @AverageNerdTalks 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Well, I was referring to additional internal drives in this case. If you have a laptop which supports more than one drive or a desktop with multiple internal drives, then they can be mounted as folders in Linux as part of the operating system's file tree. Installing to an external drive is not straight forward and definitely not recommended!

      Most apps on Linux systems are typically not as large or heavy as on Windows. So, you probably should be fine installing everything on your internal drive.

    • @jmckey
      @jmckey 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Similarly I have to admit to accidentally wiping the flatpak repository (var/lib/flatpak) when I was trying to change it to point to a copy in my home directory (my var partition is dumb tiny for a prior Debian bookworm install). And I was fairly early on in the setup process of my laptop environment so I hadn’t really gotten to backups being setup yet. Now I’m. Gun shy and won’t run rm -rf without adding the -i. (Solid advice I found after this booboo). And I used to WORK for a backup software company. I was able to work around the problem though. Searched my history for the 5 or 6 flatpaks I had installed so far and redid them with the new symbolic link to my home dir. worked like a charm. Now my flarpaks can be modular like my home directory.

    12:56 Linux is part of a full Operating System, the full operating systems that use Linux and are bundled and distributed are called Linux Distributions. They generally work like Unix. Some don't have basic Unix functionality like being able to install Linux/Unix programs ie Android and ChromeOS so they are sometimes not considered Linux Distributions. Many work much like Unix which is great and also have a GUI so they can make a great alternative to Windows.

  • @JacobP81
    @JacobP81 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

    12:26 Chrome OS flex has NO support for Android apps you basically can not install ANYTHING on it. It has basically ZERO support for installing additional programs. It is pretty crappy. Technically I guess you can install PWA apps but THAT'S IT! Basically it's just a web browser and that's pretty much it!

  • @JacobP81

    You CAN install the old games that came with Windows 7, there blacklisted but there is a link to modified versions and instructions on how to modify them. One option is install Winaero Tweaker which has links to install the classic Windows apps including Minesweeper. You also want to get ShutUp10 to disable telemetry.

    0:46 The 6th is 3rd party ads. Like the deceptive ads in the Start Menu of Windows 11. You forgot that one. There's more too. Like the new blacklist that blocks some 3rd party programs. And forced obsolescence where Windows 11 doesn't run on hardware that is not really really new unless you hack it to.

    I guess my question is that if Kernel Level Anti-Cheat is the most effective way to stop cheaters, but we don't think that it is... How do we prove that? and more importantly, How do we implement a better Anti-cheat? I'm not playing a game with cheaters, that just sounds like a bad time. I like having fun playing games. What are different ways that aren't Kernel Level Anti-Cheat that Devs can add to their game that are as effective as Kernel Level Anti-Cheat?

    • @AverageNerdTalks
      @AverageNerdTalks 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Those are very good questions! Regardless of the efficacy of kernel level anti-cheat, the vulnerabilities introduced by it are not worth it in my opinion. Developers do need to think long and hard about how they could prevent cheating without resorting to intrusive mechanisms like these.

    Let’s take it a step further. Linux mint is built off of Ubuntu which is backed by a big company (I forget the name) and could cause Ubuntu to go under if that company decided to stop supporting it. The Linux mint Debian edition distro is built off of Debian which is pretty stable and backed by thousands of volunteers. Debian is not going anywhere anytime soon. Linux mint Debian edition is going to be more stable and more reliable because of that.

    We don't want kernel level anti-cheat but we need a solution for it (which we currently don't). Look at Valve new CS2 full of cheat or even before CSGO. Look at Valorant and even other CSGO servers which used kernel level anti-cheat. You can always feel confident in no cheaters when playing valorant or FACEIT CSGO but CS2 full of cheaters.

Edit: apple's high security yea yea its not more secure then android chief i hate to break it to them only reason people think that is because its closed as fuck, that doesnt make it secure just makes it "we can ship whatever we want you dont know it. apple ships trackers too you just dont see them being discussed because everyone believes its secure and not spying on you haha thats a funny argument and belief.

    I've been using Linux mint for years as my main driver and never had a hick up , it has never frozen , no death screen , no nothing . Adobe creative suit and Microsoft office both work perfectly installed via WINE . For gaming STEAM supports pretty much everything now and emulators are finally working fantastically . If you want to break free and forget about headaches my recommendation is Linux Mint. I know , I know , it's scary at first but community support is 24/7 and 99"% of the cases just pop your question on Google and first result is usually the answer . Customization is literally heaven , so you can have the coolest looking environment and still enjoy an operative system stable , robust and secure .

    My prediction on how the situation will improve is that games that requires high system trust should be run in their own virtual machine which is protected from the rest of the system, use attestation to prove that the vm isn't compromised or running in another vm of a cheater. Some of Windows's new security features have done similar things, but nothing specifically intended for protecting games and making it easy for the average user. Now, a buggy anticheat kernel driver can only affect the virtual machine of the game and not the rest of your system. The kernel driver is not able to access all of the hardware of the computer, but only what the hypervisor exposes to it. This also addresses your concern about the anticheat being able to affect or see what you are doing that is unrelated to the game.

      i feel like the motivation behind this new "industry standard" is partly the same motivation behind "we reserve the right to ruin your life" EULAs. it's kind of like, it's of little inconvenience to EA if they install invasive software on your computer.. it's an economical, permanent solution to a problem of theirs [cheaters]. So unless ppl advocate against this practice then i don't see why it would ever change. They have no incentive to innovate to restore our privacy -- it's of no consequence to them

    Kernel-level anticheat is defeated by kernel-level cheats, and the latter are only going to propagate more the more the former propagate. So, you are potentially compromising your machine at no greater benefit to your playing experience. The only way you can avoid being affected by cheaters is if you don't play those games or play them on LAN exclusively.
