Sailing an early Westerly Fulmar, mostly singlehanded along the south coast of Britain, across the Channel and singlehanded around Britain in 2021
13 July 2024
This is a sample of some footage I have gathered during my voyages to Southern Ireland sailing singlehanded on my Westerly Fulmar. I will prepare more footage especially of the harbours and anchorages along the south coast of Ireland and as far as Bantry Bay. This is Glandore - it was so good I visited twice!

Singlehanded sailing along the south coast of Ireland
มุมมอง 224หลายเดือนก่อน
Thalmia has begun a singlehanded sailing trip along the south coast of Ireland heading for the Wild West Atlantic coast. I’ll post some more footage at a later date. This was sailing from Courtmacsherry to Glandore - bombing along at over 7knts at times in a beam reach with 1 reef in the main.
2024 launch of yacht Thalmia in a storm and preparations for solo sailing to Ireland

Thalmia was launched in the aftermath of named storm Kathleen. A few problems emerged in the shakedown but only one was significant (I hope!). Now we make plans to sail from the Exe to Southern Ireland and up the "Wild Atlantic Coast". Solo trip to Dartmouth as a shakedown for Thalmia (the yacht) and Derek (the skipper) - mostly the latter who needed to remember how to manage a 32ft boat singlehanded. Moored to a visitors buoy at Dittisham. Mostly all good - few exceptions which I will cover in a subsequent video!

Challenging singlehanded sailing back from Scilly
มุมมอง 4.3K11 หลายเดือนก่อน
After a couple of excellent weeks on Scilly on my bilge keel 1980 built Westerly Fulmar, I picked a day to return to the mainland, which was challenging, but not as bad as it would have been the days before or after! I stopped at the Helford, Salcombe and Dartmouth to find good weather windows. In the video I set out some of how I manage the boat singlehanded. Filmed with GoPro Hero7 Black, iPh...

Hi very interesting video doing day sails how long did it take you. Thanks Steve
Well I was away for about 15 weeks so over 3 months but I waited in Inverness several days as my wife joined me through the Caledonian canal which we took slowly and I spent 10 days cruising the inner western isles and a another break with my wife in Padstow. The actual circumnavigation bit was probably 3 months and I wasn’t pushing myself!
Thank you for a great summary of your travels 🙂 P.S I am envious!
@@mikeg8335 thank you! Very soon I’ll put together some videos of my Southern Ireland trip early this summer - hope you enjoy them too.
Wow. That was one of the best investments of time watching that video. Very therapeutic. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! I have just had another look at it - great memories!
Sorry Derek I've called you david
Hi David, thanks for your great videos, you and I are like minded souls, your memories are my memories although my craft was a konsort. You have reminded me of great sailing trips so similar to yours, sadly I do not sail anymore. Thank you
😂that’s my sons name so I won’t take offence! I’m not sure how many more years sailing I have in me. At 73 I’m beginning to be aware of my limitations. I’ll be posting some footage of my mostly singlehanded sailing to Southern Ireland in due course - hope you enjoy that as well.
Dunnet Head and Cape Wrath just too much for weather and anchorages presumably.
Actually it was decided by my non sailing wife who said she would join me for the week if I transited the Caledonian! And in the event it was definitely worth doing for the fantastic scenery and having my wife with me of course!
Great sailing Derek!
Are you heading to Lawrence Cove/Bere island Derek?
Well that’s a possibility - some strong winds coming in later this week- is that a good sheltered spot? A marina with facilities?
Well that’s a possibility - is that a sheltered spot? A marina with facilities? Might look seriously at that.
Yes that’s where I’m heading tomorrow all being well.
@@derekhathaway - If you're still around later in the week I will say hello. I had hoped to be across sooner but work got in the way! Fair winds!
Very pleased with Lawrence Cove marina. Good bar and great walking! Currently in Glengarriff bay - stunningly beautiful. Coming around Mizen Head tomorrow aiming for Crookhaven/ Sherkin or Baltimore. Then making my way east - slowly!
Ive gotta get off this sofa.. Keep the wind in your sails and stay safe
WhiteHills is such a lovely place. Most amazing people. We had some problems, lost our propeller, and everyone helped us.
Not sure if Bertie was still there as harbourmaster he was brilliant and the feature pic on that video was taken by him! If he’s not then I’m sure he will have trained up his replacement well!
Hi, Very encouraging video. I am thinking of sailing around Britain for a charity and can't afford a large boat. It would be great to get your advice on how it is done. In particular it seems important to consider the engine. Did you add a charity to your sailing?
You are so right about having a reliable motor. Although we all hope to sail much of the way the reality is that if you want to be sure of making fair progress you will need to motor or at least motor sail some passages. And of course getting in to harbours or anchoring especially singlehanded it is essential. There are several useful books out there - one by Roger Oliver Sailing solo around the UK and another by Sam Steele Circumnavigating UK & Ireland which will give you lots of advice. And of course check out my other more detailed videos of my circumnavigation.
I also did a blog which mentions the charity I raised money for as well as some of my experiences. Search for voyagesofthalmia.org
AH ! a bit of Pink Floyd, how nice.
Great video. How long did the entire trip take please? A video talking about the route planning for each leg would be fascinating
I spent 3months but that included 10 days in the Western Isles on a bit of a jolly and a full week going through the Caledonian canal and you can do it quicker. Also if you are up for some overnight passages it could be a lot shorter. But it’s something to savour not rush! Good comment about including something about the planning. I’ll bear that in mind for future videos - I’m heading to Ireland next week!
@@derekhathaway really appreciate this information. I do think a video about your route planning and contingencies and also perhaps a video on how you would do it faster would be very popular. Many people would consider this but don’t have the experience to work it all out.
You keep a tidy boat sir!
Your very kind sir! It was well presented when I bought her - which helped persuade my wife it was a good buy!
Fabulous
I’ll miss not getting there this year - but maybe Southern Ireland will compensate!
I was launched just before Storm Kathleen. Unfortunately, my Fulmar was damaged and the boatyard had to lift her again and repair the damage. Finally back in on Thursday and down to the mooring in Poole Harbour this morning. Looking forward to following your adventures in 2024.
Ouch that was unfortunate - now I count myself lucky the boatyard managed our launch ok. Glad you are on the water at last.
Well done Derek. My Konsort was swinging in the slings the other week, always a nervous time! I'm hoping for a shackdown sail this afternoon with fair tide and winds...just could be a little warmer for May 4th! Good luck with your plans for this year.
Yes gentle breezes here today! But I see the sun! Have a good sail!
Marvellous! Best wishes from Plymouth. Hope to see you out there! James
I hope so too! We may just be ships passing in the night!
I’m thrilled you are heading to Ireland. I’m hoping to do that next year. My family come from Galway and Mayo. I’ll be watching closely!
Hi Kate, if I’m lucky with the weather I might make it to Galway but all the way up that coast looks gorgeous!
@@derekhathaway I think you need to be very self reliant as there aren’t much in the way of facilities. Extra fuel and water maybe?
Very true - mostly anchorages beyond Dingle so looking for fair winds for sailing and lots of water on board!
Thankyou Derek: I'm heading clockwise from Ipswich in our Centaur in about 10 days - your footage is inspiring me. Regards, Rob
Excellent! Glad its was helpful - you'll have a whale of a time! I'm setting off from the Exe towards the end of May heading west towards Salcombe and Falmouth and from there to Southern Ireland. Who knows we may see each other along the way. What is your boat's name?
Excellent condensed video. I've been in about half of those places and agree completely with your comments so I've now got a great description of the other half with confidence of the accuracy of the description.
Thank you for your comments and glad you found it informative
Really enjoyed this. Beautiful evocative images accompanied by some great music.
Thank you! Glad you share my good taste in music!
I will still watch the video though. Good content and helpful. Maybe get a suitable mic with a wind protection cover, allowing more use of the ambient sounds of sailing and the sea. Wishing you a safe and pleasant sail.
Respectfully, would be much easier to watch without the loud rock style music.
Sorry that was not to your taste! I’m heading to Ireland in a couple of months and I’m exploring different music options as background to my videos. Thank you for commenting.
Pink Floyd Shine on you Crazy Diamond what's not to like.
Excellent, well done!
Thank you!
Looking forward to watching these :)
Hope you enjoy!
Beautiful memories from your trip. Apart from Sicily isles you’ve taken me back. I like your boat, I think it’s a great singlehanded vessel with comfort 26’ do not quite have.
Too true! I moved up from a Sadler 26 and the extra space - and headroom - make a big difference. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for detailing your stops, quite fancy a fulmar but with a cockpit tent,
An expensive item added by the previous owner but when it’s needed it’s a real bonus!
Nice summary - departed April but you don’t say when you got back - how long did it take? Thanks
Hi Christopher, I got back early July but that was partly because I spent 7 days in the Caledonian canal, 10 days in the Western isles and several days in Padstow. So could have comfortably done it in less time. Best to not be rushed especially best to have time to enjoy parts of the journey!
You’ve done some fantastic footage Derek and lovely locations. Look forward to watching all your videos. I’m a south coast sailor myself 👍
Thank you for your kind comments. Hope you enjoy the other videos. I wish I’d had the drone when I was going round Britain! I’m looking forward to using it when I visit Ireland later this year!
I put your videos on whenever i want to relax and dream of nice summery sailing
As do I! Only a short time away!
Next year Ireland S & SW at least will be my cruising itinerary if the weather permits. I’m looking forward to capturing some stunning scenery!
if you get chance visit Bere Island West Cork , there a lovely marina there called Lawrence Cove where my boat is moored, and a great cafe that does the best fish and chips and cups of tea@@derekhathaway
Thanks for some summer sun looking forward to your Ireland video I plan to go next season when I retire
Cheers! The joy of being retired is (or should be!) that you can pick your time to go and not be under pressure to set out if the weather suggests you stay put!
Is that another Westerly grounded at 4:29? Any idea how it ended up like that? Ebbing tide left her grounded or did the storm drag her anchor?
I didn't get to identify it as a Westerly. It appears that it was down to the stormy conditions and presumably inadequate anchoring followed by ebbing tide leaving it stranded. It finally broke in two as it was recovered which may mean it wasn't a Westerly!!. Very sad though!
23’ Seamaster.
Lovely video Derek! Thanks for posting.
Thank you for watching!
Looks great. I'm hoping to get over that way in 2024 for a UK cruise myself in a locally purchased small yacht. Maybe our paths will cross somewhere. : )
Wonderful! If you need ideas of where to sail get in touch. Western isles of Scotland was my favourite area when I sailed around Britain in 2021 - I have a TH-cam video which covers that and other videos of my trip in 2021 and check out my trips to the Isles of Scilly which is also a gem and you may find interesting.
@@derekhathaway Absolutely, that would be very helpful. The yacht I have in mind is already in Ardrossan. Scotland looks amazing. I'll be in touch when I finally get there.
Great stuff Derek! Im thinking West Cost of France for 2024
A friend came up the west coast from Canal du Midi last year snd had great time - and we’ve talked about a trip around the NW corner of France in a future year. I’ll be interested to follow your expedition ? On Instagram?
Super. Hope you have a cracking 2024. Best wishes.
Thank you and best wishes to you as well!
Lovely compilation to watch especially on a wet winter's day. Best of luck with plans for Ireland!
Thanks so much! 😊
Thx for that lovely impressions! I really like it very much. Especially your clear pronouciation (I'm a german learning english), the beautiful pictures and Pink Floyd ;-)
Thank you for your kind comments in excellent English!
Stunning. No sailing?
Wind on the nose through Loch Ness and very little wind for the rest and canals not easy under sail - oh and my wife as crew for this bit and a non-sailor!
May I ask how you charged your batteries? And what size are they?
Hi Paul, I have 2x120ah lead acid leisure batteries and separate starter and windlass batteries. I have modest solar panel on the coach roof @c45watts which charges the leisure batteries via Victron MPPT controller (high spec panel from Solara - copes with some shade!) but also most days the motor ran entering and leaving port and often for longer! Always managed my electronics including autohelm without problem.
@@derekhathaway Thanks for the info. I’m doing the same next year. So your video was invaluable to me.
Amazing trip and a great video. Congratulations.
Thank you - I was very fortunate to be able to do the trip and the videos help me remember it all!
I'm looking at various Westerly's for my dream adventure solo sailing in the next couple of years. 26' to 30' and on the tightest budget. I wonder if you'd trust your 30' to take you safely across the Atlantic? An old Centaur I could probably eventually afford, but I rarely hear about them as blue water capable
I think my Fulmar (32ft) would cope quite well in open water - handles cross channel well. Fin keel would be better for open water than my bilge keel which is better suited for coastal cruising but the bilge keeler would still be safe if not quite so good upwind. Other 30ft Westerly boats have done transatlantic and many larger westerlies. Personally I would want something bigger than a centaur.
Just found you and really enjoyed that. Had a Konsort but would have loved a Fulmar, a proper sea boat. My last boat was a Moody 346 and in the days of two week holidays from work (!) managed to get to Padstow from Porthmadog as our launch point to the Scillies. But the weather and time was against us and we never made it, a big regret. It’s not quite the same by the Scillonian!!
Thank you for your comments! There are also many from the south coast who get to Falmouth and are beaten by bad weather and don’t make it to Scilly. I count myself fortunate to have made it many times - fortunate and retired so I can pick my weather window!
Thanks Much ❤
Perfect Apertures*
Really appreciate the Great Photographer really ❤
Mighty Well
Great music also
Well done sir! My wife and I have been lucky to travel around the uk three times so far, once through the canals and twice around the top, and we have been to many of the same harbours as yourself. I agree with you on so many points from taking your time in west coast of Scotland to how spotlessly clean the village of whitehills is.
Wow! I’m impressed with the 3 times circumnavigation! Maybe I should at least make it twice! I would definitely budget time for more time in the Western Isles.
