From City to Smallholding: Our Welsh Journey
United Kingdom
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 10 มิ.ย. 2024
Join us as we transform an abandoned 13.5-acre smallholding in rural West Wales into our dream home and hopefully one day business. Taking on 99% of the work ourselves and documenting it all along the way.
After uprooting our lives in a busy city, we're now tackling the complete renovation of our 120+ year-old farmhouse and all of the land with a final aim of self sufficiency and a more balanced and nature filled existence.
Subscribe and follow our journey of hard work, blood, sweat, and tears-and hopefully, a touch of countryside magic!

Renovating the WORST room in the house - damp, rot and personal injuries!(ep.6)
This week we tackle, what our surveyor described, as the worst room in our. Welsh farmhouse - this room was suffering from rising damp, rot and needed to be attended to quickly! None of this is particularly surprising in a house that was not only abandoned for 6 years but also over 120+ years old but we had to deal with it fast!

OUR STORY:
We're Gav and Nicole and we decided to risk everything by swapping our comfortable lives in the city to buy an abandoned homestead/smallholding in the West of Wales.
We have a huge challenge on our hands as the property and the land all need a full renovation after lying empty for 6 years but as we spent everything we had on the move, we will be doing all the work ourselves. This is a life time project though, so we have time to figure it all out!
We would love if you would like and subscribe and follow our journey!

มุมมอง 20K19 ชั่วโมงที่ผ่านมา
This week we began the transformation of our 100 abandoned year old Welsh farmhouse and were able to kick off the renovation work throughout. We get to work stripping out the house and getting it back to the bones and we even get to pull some walls down! Also apologies for my croaky voice - I'm suffering from a karaoke injury. Renovating an ABANDONED Farmhouse - have we taken on too much? (ep.4)
มุมมอง 22K14 วันที่ผ่านมา
This week, we faced our biggest physical challenge to date and it really made us question if this wall too much for two people to pull off and we had yet more work to do on the caravan. It's not all doom and gloom though as we got to explore a yet to be opened barn too! FOLLOW US: Instagram - from_city_to_smallholding Tiktok - www.tiktok.com/@city_to_smallholding OUR STORY: We're...

You will find out that demolishing this property will cost less than renovating it. It is not worth the work and cost, but hey I'm just a strange from the internet why should you believe me anyway.
Not really the point of a renovation is it? 😂
That’s crazy you need a gap so air can circulate so the wood stays dry and dosnt rot that’s a real shame
Yeah a massive shame as the floor was lovely!
If you lay a tarp on the floors you can grab the corners and drag the rubbish out to your skip rather than a bigger clean up
It was so heavy I'm not sure we would have been able to move it all in one go but that is a good idea for smaller areas
i used to live in a 400 year old cottage, i think the damp problem wouldnt of been noticable when it was lived in as their would be a fire going daily. in my old place if i went away for more than a week it would take 2 weeks to get all the stones warm again, well insulated when renovating and had central heating but if the fire hadnt been on in a week and it was cold outside you could feel it creeping through the floors and walls. stoves and ranges beat open fires, at present tho a open fire is all we have, during a few storms its been a godsend, having a fire provided heat and cooking when we had no power, the longest we had no electricity was 4 days but for some around us it was a week.
Yeah we will definitely be having a couple of fires in the house, I imagine we might get some harsh winters!
Great progress, well done!
Thanks very much!
💜👏👏
From experience I suggest you keep and use the coal fires and avoid double glazing . The house was built to breathe with open fires. A 'back boiler' behind the main fireplace can supply radiators and hot water. Damp proofing by drilling into the walls only if the walls are brick. Doesn't work on stone walls . Old houses have a lot of character and durability.
No modern house will last more than 120 years. Each generation refurbishes and time moves on.
So true!
Keeps y fit
It certainly does!
Love those fire places.😮😮😮
They are great aren't they!
Lot of work and heartaches but dedication and perseverance will get you through at the end game it’ll be an absolute gem Used to work on this type of buildings in the 70s and early 80s expect the unexpected I’m now retired as a builder in oz best of luck
Thanks very much!
I love the “talking wall”!
💕The wooden pieces coming down from the ceiling is great for starting the fires in your log burner💕The ash from the burner is great to use in the garden on many plants💕
💕Cows see cow sheds & grassy fields so I think watching you both from time to time is like changing the channel on a tv 😂💕They’ll be mooing to each other saying I wonder what’s going to happen next 😊💕
😂😂😂
💕Have you started a compost pile with all of these cuttings you’ve been pulling up💕That’s free compost for your future veggie beds iPhone💕Plus you could try the no dig garden bed method💕
We have indeed!
i love the old farm doors
Yeah they are brilliant, we will be putting them back in
A good video good luck with the renovation 😊😊
Thanks! 😊
Mate you’re gonna be absolutely ripped by the time I see you next 👏🏼💪🏼 gonna be giving Gav’s Dr Kelso calves a run for their money.
Bloody hope so!😂
Room after room after... is that a tiled floor - the red and black?
Yeah! Red and black quarry tiles!
Oh lovely. I hope the house stays in your family for generations. @citytosmallholding
There’s only one Colin D!
@@woodenfurniture 🤣🤣
Being as brutal as you can be. Get that ceiling down asap
Dads on lawnmowers are a happy lot.
May i ask what company did you use for your internet, we are out in the sticks in Wales and our internet is terrible,,,, loving your vids,,,excellent series
Please don’t judge us but we have a Starlink 😂😂. If I could have anything else I would but it is good
@@citytosmallholding yeah i looked into that but the cost is too much for us
Can’t wait for the next episode, best wishes to you all 👍👍👍👍
Thanks so much!
Mass produced....i pulled out three from my village house in Ireland which dated ti to 1760s.
I was really worried everyone would be upset with us for pulling them out but I’m glad it’s not just us that thought it was horrible!
@@citytosmallholding my grandparents installed one at home which is a farmhouse nearby. My parents pulled it out in the 1980s. Horrible cement and mass produced tiles.
Looks like a prosperous small holding to me to judge by features and artifacts. Good luck.
Yeah we are so happy to get a chance to breathe some life back into it!
I bet that house is glad you two turned up, it's gonna be epic when you are done 🙌
I really hope so! Also Gav is happy to give you advice on your ridge tiles btw? Give us a shout if you want to chat?
The info on the heritage-house site might be of interest
Oooh nice ok, will check that out!
Brilliant, please dampen and spray the old dust and detrius, dust masks aren't that good. Stay safe and sound🎉🎉🎉
Thanks ❤️
Love the old beams in the ceiling, do you plan to leave them open?
Well you have touched on a bit of a sore spot there Karen 😂 - I would love to but Gav is saying because we will have all the pipe work under there and if we want any insulation we will basically lose it!
Pioneer music for pioneer work. Keep on rocking! 😊

Since the Tally Ho project has pretty much finished, this is my new favourite builder series, commenting for the algorithm.
Awww that really means a lot, thankyou!
Ahh glad this house is being given a new life hope you find lots of treasures
Thank you for allowing us to share your adventure
No problem!
Hope you kept the creel! Very useful.
Ooh what's a creel! I hope I did keep it 😂
Good luck....it needs demolition first
Not really the point of a renovation 😂
Looking forward to your update!!!
One day at a time was my motto 😊😊😊
Very wise!
Renovating an old house, there are ups and downs, joy and disappointment, but the time will come that you will be proud of your work and your lovely home. When all the dirty work is over, that's when you'll be relieved and eager to move on to the next phase of work. Good luck and see you there.
Thanks so much!
Love the chatting wall! And I was so happy to see that tile fireplace surround go 😂
It was awful wasn't it!
You could paint that gate black.
That's very true!
Where is your wheelbarrow? It would protect your backs!
We didn't have a ramp into the skip at this point but don't worry we have one now!
Another great video!😊
Glad you enjoyed!
Wow, your really getting to the bottom of things and doing a great job while your at it. The new gate looks perfect and shout out to ya dad for his stella lawnmowing!!❤
hahaha thanks!
Do you guys have a plan for the floors on ground floor? Will you dig down and then pour a pad? Or are you going to do any reinforcing interior or exterior under the house? Really curious how this will play out!
Hey, we are going to dig down and put underfloor heating in and then all the bits and bobs that comes with that - screed etc etc - Gav is better at the details than me 😂
What a surprise to see that floor sitting on dirt. Wow. Well, you will make it right and be rewarded with a house that shelters you for a lifetime. Keep up the morale and remember to have fun. Someday this will be a memory and having fun will make it so much the sweeter. Stick a wheel on that gate, let it carry the load. ❤
That's a very good idea!
*slowly backs out of the room*
😂
Sorry to be a bearer of bad tidings but you will not believe the muck and soot you will have when you remove the upstairs ceilings. You'll come away looking like Pandas. Ask me how I know. Regards Jim.
Oh man!!
Great content.. such a shame there was no ancient fireplace under that really ugly one…. ❤❤❤❤❤
I still have hope we find something interesting!
Great episode 🙌 myself and my wife love following along
Thanks very much Giles and your wife!
