How has it been for you to get interviews after you got your master's degree? Did you see a significant increase in the number of recruiters that were reaching out to you or were you able to get interviews a lot easier?
TBH, I already had a job I liked at Microsoft (and I still like), so I wasn't actively recruiting and haven't tried to get any interviews since graduating. However, I would say that yes, I did notice that there were more recruiters reaching out initially when I added GT to my resume, but it seems to have slowed down a bit. I also added GT to my LinkedIn before actually graduating and just put the expected graduation date. Other factors may include that my LinkedIn location was in Atlanta before, but I now have it set to the Washington DC area. It's possible that there are less recruiters reaching out for tech roles in the DC area than Atlanta.
@@bryan_truong Thanks for the response! It would be cool if you could make a video on how you got into Microsoft, the process, and the experience with all the preparation with timelines. I've been a Software Support Engineer now for almost 5 years and been trying to transition in SWE, but haven't had any luck so far and would be cool to learn from other people's experiences,
@user-fo4sy2rr2w thanks! That’s a good idea. I’ll add it to the backlog and hopefully will do it soon
Its so sad to see people only talking about html, css, JS and have no idea about electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, automobile engineering, mechanical, civil engineering etc. Is it something done on purpose to keep people away from important engineering majors so that people dont question about job outsourcing to china or india? is it kinda brainwashing done on purpose?
Well to be fair, Harry actually studied computer engineering, so he does have more of a hardware engineering background than I do (I did computer science). But since we are software engineers, the conversation naturally steered towards software. Neither of us actually work on HTML/CSS/JS code as our main project stacks though (neither of us are web developers)
@@bryan_truong In the US jobs only exist in software development and as people do not have any idea about other engineering majors such as Mechanical, electrical or civil or automobile engineering etc. people dont even think about questioning the government about jobs or protesting to bring back the outsourced jobs. It seems a government plan to keep people uneducated or only encourage them to get into software related majors

Hi Bryan, quick question - are there people at OMSCS with non CS background (like Finance) who are there to upskill, i.e. not looking to pivot into SWE roles?
Hm, in my experience, most people with non-CS background were trying to get into SWE or at least SWE-adjacent roles (Technical PMs, data analysts, etc.) This is not to say that it can't be done, but it is a lot of work to do the program just to upskill (if you aren't already a SWE), when there are other free go-at-your-own-pace online materials.
@@bryan_truong thank you, that was helpful.
Update: It has been brought to my attention by a viewer (thank you) that Microsoft does offer free lunch in certain locations, such as Nairobi!

@bryan , i needed to know about the Salary increase or better job opportunities one can have after completing this masters..can we realistically get a six figure salary?
Like I said, I didn't get an instant salary increase, since I already was a SWE. But yes, it is realistic to get a six figure salary as a SWE after completing the masters (though it is also realistic/possible to get a six figure salary as a SWE without a masters)
Very insightful, thanks for sharing!
Of course, thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe for more ;)
if your level is <=61 and you are just new and just fresh out of college, its a lower pressure environment for you to learn and at the same time, having time to party. (the right team also important). >= 62 I won't recommend. The mid / senior level is just TOO low on TC. way too low.
Thanks for the perspective! I'm 61 now and feel like I am making good contributions to the team and am learning while still enjoying the WLB 😜
MS has had the reputation of underpaying the market by 30% or more for decades. Everything you mention was still a thing in the late 90s when I left. It’s a great training ground though.
Thanks for the context/perspective!
Microsoft Legal AI has identified your video, and logged your complaints through the Integrity Portal. Thank you and have a good day. - jk
Microsoft don't pay their employees well. I wonder why not more left to join other companies. Perks are nice (not that MS have much), but what really counts is compensation, 401K match, HSA employer contribution. .NET will not help you much in your career, unless you are looking for an IT position in a non-tech company.
Great content
❤
Thanks for the MacBook info. Definitely a big thing for me to consider.
I am disappointed by hearing the work you do there, I was expecting C++ using OpenCL or OpenMP on distrubuted networks, or building Integrated Circuits (ICs) like ASICs on FPGAs, when you said C# .NET I was like 🤦♂
😥harsh reality I suppose lol
Questions. At any point did you feel like a peasant while riding the train? Was the train ever full outside metropolitan Miami and Orlando? From this video it looks like ticket cost will barely cover the cost of the electricity and operational overhead. Or maybe the $12 meals will generate Billions taken from the taxpayers. Other thamnopening day, has a train ever sold out? Can you not afford a car, even a used Honda?
I actually felt like the train was very luxurious! I only rode it from Orlando to Fort Lauderdale, so I can't speak to the crowdedness, but I think it started to fill up more once we got to Boca and kept heading south.
Thanks for spilling the tea sis
Just curious, what information did you find as a tea?
Thank you
Of course! Hope you enjoyed! I have some new videos in the works that I'm really excited about too

I wonder if you guys are gonna get the new surface laptops with the new snapdragon chips and copilot+
A colleague just got a new device refresh (unfortunately I believe we only get them every 3 years, so I'm not eligible yet), and he said the new surface laptops weren't available yet. He ended up getting a surface 6 (and couldn't get the surface pro). Hopefully they will allow it by the time I am up for a device upgrade 🤞
Is this the new TechLeadHD
haha I am not the biggest fan of TechLeadHD, and I am pretty far from being a tech lead at this point but maybe eventually 🤣
Babe wake up new BT vid just dropped!!!!
Great video. And thanks for the salary disclose! Glassdoor said 120-190k. Is level 61 a microsoft payscale? Your GA tech masters certainly paid off. 2 years and 6 figures!
Level 61 is a level within microsoft that generally warrants a slightly different payscale, but it does overlap with other levels (60 and 62)
Ayoooo my guy! Good to see you again! It is always a good time when you upload! Looking forward to this one! I have two years left with my degree, and been following you, if recall since you started taking G Tech masters xD Which is the reason I found you! But yeah, since then many things has changed! Yet, I still want to do my masters, yet not with Georgia Tech.
Why not Georgia tech?
Thanks! Glad you are sticking around :)
@@johnp9890 Hmmm - I’m aiming higher. Also, GA tech is becoming a degree mill, which a bad reputation.
@@bryan_truong Sure : D
@@AtomLabX ok. So what degree are you going to get instead of GA tech?
This is so insightful
Could you talk a little about the free food and drinks MS offers? Is it possible for someone who works on site to have three meals in office for free?
Yes. Microsoft gives certain credit according to grades. I am a junior engineer in malaysia and my food quota is around 250usd per week, which is plenty. At the end of month if you cannot finish the credit, you can purchase groceries from MS store and stock in my fridge! My cabinet is full of pringles now lol.
There is no free food at the office, just free drinks. It's pretty standard, with coffee, tea, sparkling waters/seltzers, sodas, and juices.
What did you do to prepare for each course in advance? Did you read recommended textbook for each course? Asking this because I wanted to know the best strategy
I definitely did not. I didn’t prepare much for each course at all
@@bryan_truong oh really? And what would you do if u were stuck on projects? What outside resources did you use?
I would just google search as needed. Generally the internal class forums were the most helpful, though (Ed/Piazza)
@@bryan_truong would you please give me an example of how you googled when you were stuck on assignments? Thanks. Sorry for asking too much
Some of these salaries are bonkers. I check Levels every once in a while, it gets more depressing every year. At 9YOE (looking at staff in the next 2-3 years), my salary has actually gone down, with inflation included, over the last 5 years. That's just the norm in my region, if anyone's thinking of moving to "silicon slopes" for work, I really don't recommend it.
Oh and yeah Coupang is huge, but they don't do remote so you have to live in a place like Mountain View to even get in there.
Thanks for the context! Didn’t know that
Hey @bryan_truong, can you tell me if i had to turn down the admission offer/ not join the programme after applying due some personal problems, would my future applications for the same programmes be considered or will I be blacklisted?
I don’t think there is a blacklist/cooldown period
@@bryan_truong thanks man,
THANKS for sharing thisn
Of course! Hope you found it interesting
NO they are undercover monster they will not show off ever and be the hidden power
hahaha IBM does always seem to manage to hang around in the industry quietly
It's very white, bland, segregated and extremely boring! Not walkable, no street lights during the night. Food is terrible, public transit it trash. So many are mentally ill, can't believe the amount of young people on drugs here, homelessness is outta hand, shootings, stabbings, disastrous and deadly I-40 highway, everyone seems to be afraid of one another...must I go on!(?) I think if you are afraid of being with yourself day in and day out, this city will drive you to suic*de. Boredom is what's causing mental health and drug related issues here. I can't wait for June 2025 which is when my lease expires. I want OUT!!!😵
I do have to agree that it is very white, and the public transit is indeed non existent.
Great video! I'm in Australia now trying to get a graduate internship at IBM. This video helped me get an overview of the process and how to growth in the company. Best of luck on your journey.
Thanks you too!
Not a high speed train, but a good service nonetheless. An achievable middle ground.
Yeah I guess some people call it “higher speed train” which is more accurate lol. Brightline still calls it high speed though
im super hype for the brightline from LA to vegas! hope it looks as good as your trip when it launches!
So interesting!
Def need more high speed trains in America!
high speed trains would be badass. They are trying to plan one between charlotte/atlanta I believe
I hope that happens! Traffic on I85 can get pretty bad
Yeah they’re actually and also want to build a line between Chicago and St Louis, Portland Seattle And Vancouver, Dallas Austin San Antonio and Houston, Washington DC NYC and Boston as well as the currently under construction line between Vegas and LA.
Are they really trying to make Chi to STL high speed? I thought they just upgraded it to 125 and that was all. Also isn’t DC NYC BOSTON the Acela lol? Already “high speed”.
@@erikawwad7653 Well if you watch Micky views’s Orlando-Miami Brightline trip then you would see what I mean.

I’m moving to Orlando in October. I didn’t even know this was a thing! Great video, informative!
definitely worth trying it out when they have sales/a great way to visit friends in south florida!

Thanks for your information. How about this program for Hardware Engineer? For details, the hardware engineer working with Linux, Network(Cisco), Server, Storage, etc. Im already working as a junior hardware engineer, eager to learn about some more field in computers😂. I am curious OMSCS's coursework can be helpful for this case.
Hm. I'm honestly not too sure. Maybe the computing systems specialization may be useful? But I do fear that the coursework will be overkill on the programming side of things and is more of a software engineering focus. I think they do cover high performance computing architecture well in the coursework, but I don't think it would be as comprehensive for hardware engineering as it is for software engineering.
@@bryan_truong thanks bro, so then could you please recommend any online master program in US related to Information Tech or Hardware if you just know about it.
