Awesome stuff. Loved hearing him at Lincoln.

Stunning recital! This man is not from this earth
4:18 Very interesting to know that Cochereau wasn't planning on completely discarding the original "Choeur de Bassons" of the Grand-Orgue. Instead swapping the reeds of the Solo and Grand-Orgue. For those who don't know, the current Grand-Orgue reeds used to be on the Solo and the Grand-Orgue had Bassons at 16' 8' 4'. However, it seems the Plein Jeu of the Solo has taken priority over the Bassons. And so a new space had to be sought or maybe funds were drying up. I wonder if he had something similar planned for other original stops such as the 8' Viole de Gambe of the Grand-Orgue as well.
Absolutely sensational!
My introduction to Whitlock and Karg-Elert 1966
All I miss on this “York” flavoured programme, is the Harrison Diapasons and Tuba Mirabilis on the Minster organ.
The Toccata Prelude was taken a shade too fast for my liking but the rest of the programme was excellent.
Peter was in the Hull City Organist and my music teacher at Kingston High School, Hull in the early 1970’s and inspired me greatly to take up and appreciate the organ. He also gave me access to the City Hall Organ for which I will ever be grateful to him for. When I left School I kept in touch with him and his wife, Mary, an eminent Violinist and teacher and I became a friend of the family. He was responsible for the rebuilding of the City Hall Organ by Rushworth & Dreaper of Liverpool in the early 1980’s. He moved to Spain in the mid 1980’s until his death some years later. One of Hull’s legendary musicians and of whom I will always have the deepest respect and appreciation.
The Tuba Mirabilis is to get £20k spent on it. I did post a link to a news story but presumabky some paranoaid youtube bot feared bbc copyright retribution as it has been deleted.
I bought this on cassette tape from the stall in the Bavokerk circa 1993. I digitised the taoe a couple of years ago but it's still on my in-tray to be denoised and split into tracks etc. Great to see it on here!
Just spotted that the album is on Spotify now (I searched 'Piet Kee Bavo'), and presumably on other streaming providers. That probably means I won't get around to denoising my tape!
WOW!!!!!!!!
It’s most wonderful music!
St Erkenwald Southend closed not long after this recording was made. The organ was transferred to St Martin of Tours, Basildon. The Fanfare, March & Fugue was composed by Raymond Sunderland for the reopening of the organ after its major rebuild in 1967-68. It was played at that service by Conrad Eden. It was also played at Raymond Sunderland's funeral - he died early on Christmas morning 1977 at the organ after playing for the midnight mass. He was a fine musician and much loved gentleman - I was an 11 year old boy chorister at the Priory at that time and remember it vividly.
The Horowitz album shown in the uploader's description has nothing to do with Tournemire.
This concerto makes me crazy! I love it so much!!
Aspiring Organists of discretion & elegance take note......This is your role model...........Dame Gillian Weir has musical sensitivity and perception that cannot be learned. It must be felt , after studying the music. Only then can you perform in this "personal" sense. A naturally brilliant musician, there are not many.. C.Thors-Smith . Australia.
I play Tournemire’s communion movement of L’Orgue Mystique every Sunday for Mass during communion and often the other portions as well. He is a phenom without equal.

Thank you for posting this. Nicolas is a wonderful player, an all round lovely bloke and fantastic teacher.
splendid! wen wa this recorded. the announcer has a vintage BBC voice! Sinclair was a good friend of Elgar. Did you know that Murrill, as was as a notable musician, Was also a code breaker at Bletchley Park during the wasr.
Can't find episodes 3 & 4. Have they been uploaded? In this episode we have jumped from pre-war to the 1930s, missing out L'Orgue Mystique.. Strange. Does one of the subsequent episodes go back to this?
Incredible to hear Madame Tournemire speak! She sounds like Mrs Thatcher. I caught the tail end of one of these programmes back in 1989 and that was enough for me. Been a Tournemire devotee ever since. Great to hear them in full.
This wonderful! Do you have broadcasts of the great Arnold Richardson? His Argo discs are well-known, but it would be nice to hear more varied examples of repertoire, such as Bach. Thank you in advance.
Ian was one of my University music tutors. Glad to know that he's still hale, hearty and organing. Excellent musician.
Absolut fantastisch! - Herzlichen Dank.
I’m deeply touched by this recording. These are possibly the finest recorded performances of the Reger Dankpsalm and BWV 572. The placing and timing of each chord and note is masterful and I remember this is what he taught me all those years ago at the RCM 1979-83. I remember him so vividly and with the highest respect.
Am listening to this on the 45th anniversary of GOT, my father's 45th anniversary of his untimely death (5th June). I find it unbelievable that back in 1979, cassettes were the rage - now he is on TH-cam! Not sure what he would have thought about that!! Probably, he would have loved it!! CJT
when was this recorded x
enjoyed the first 2 programmes so much Please try and complete the remaining episodes when you can P S this remindes me of how good radio 3 used to be !

One of the problems with this huge organ is that it can sound mushy.
Please define "mushy", have listened to this organ in the cathedral many times and "mushy" has never come to mind.
Mind-blowing level of playing!
This is really interesting music. I did not know the organ music of Franz Schmidt until I heard this! His and Pach’s music sounds to me like Sebastian Bach with an advanced chromatic language. Whatever became of the Hill, Norman & Beard neoclassical organ heard here? I know that Lady Jeans’ home was demolished--when, I do not know. Do you have any other re rings by Lady Jeans?
The baroque organ was removed by Nicholson's for installation at the Birmingham Conservatoire. As far as I remember it was in 1993, but I may be wrong. I do know Lady Susie died in that year. Royal School of Church Music left the house and it was purchased for development but no idea if demolished Must have been wonderful to have played it.
@@vulgivagu From what I've read, Cleveland Lodge was bequeathed to the RSCM by Susi in 1993. (prior to this the RSCM had been at Addington Palace for many years). National Lottery funding was applied for successfully and was used to restore the property. However, the RSCM decided in 2005? to raise funds by selling the site to a developer. The RSCM then moved to Sarum College, Salisbury and the developer subsequently demolished Cleveland Lodge. I feel this is somewhat sad, and reprehensible on the part of the RSCM. I'm glad the classical baroque style organ has survived (The first of its kind in the UK) although there was another organ, a Willis that was in the house when the Jeans' moved there, so I understand. I don't know what became of that or her many other instruments eg Pedal Harpsichords. Many famous organists and keyboard players were taught in her summer schools held there e.g. George Guest, Peter Hurford, David Lumsden.
@antoniboleslawowicz8095 @vulgivagu @rogerwilians8950 Susi Jeans' organ now resides in the music school of King's High School, Warwick, having been moved there in 2020.
The Susi Jeans organ now resides in the Northgate Room of the Music Department at King's High School, Warwick.
❤
I've been looking for this recording for decades... A shame there's so much wow; but more of a shame that the end of the Wesley is cut off!!
Very bright and staccatoee. I liked it, but can he play lush orchestral pieces from Roger’s and Hammerstein?
Good to hear.
Was this one of (or) the first recordings in the UK of the Durufle Toccata ?
Enjoyable Recital which you could imagine had been recorded in a European Cathedral. For the Mendelshohn, I rather favour a more Romantic Registration though.
The Buxtehudre Prelude & Fugue in G Minor, I rate as his best with the three part fugue. One of my favourite organ pieces to listen to and play.
I have the original EP of this - bought at Lichfield! Superb playing and a lovely instrument too...
This is a reminder of the precise stereo produced by the BBC up to the early 1980s when they moved from using co-incident directional microphones (in the RFH usually AKG C24s set to figure of 8 patterns and later C414s) to spaced omni-directional microphones. It is also a reminder of what a superb player Ralph Downes was. Great to hear, also, the voice of Felix Aprahamian, writer of so many informative programme notes and someone who made such a contribution to London's musical life in the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1970s BBC Radio 3 frequently broadcast live symphony concerts from the RFH on Wednesday evenings, and since the microphones were in place and technical team present, broadcast the 5pm Organ Recital live also. I attended many of these recitals and came to know which organists registered using their ears and which by formula. Great days.
Sigh, Kynaston and his reputation for steamrollering through pieces purely to show his technique (with wrong notes, still) rather than adopt a better, slower tempo.
The odd wrong note I agree, but exciting playing must surely count for something?
Sorry, that was for side 1 starting with Premier Livre D'orgue and the organist was David Lee. Side 2 starting with Concerto in A minor (Vivaldi) is the organ at The Phipps Residence Castleford Yorkshire and the organist is Michael Phipps.
I have an original vinyl with a compliment slip from J W Walkers and sons. This was made in St Bartholomew's Church Dublin. I also have the complete details of the 3 organs involved as specified by Walker Organs with the history of the original organ from 1887 which was built by Gray and Davidson Ltd to the specification of W.H. Vipond Barry who was the organist at this church for 54 years. I can send a pic if you want.
She was also in London with great legends such as George Thallben-Ball and Sir William McKei.
Sixty seconds was enough.
Extraordinary on a number of levels. Thank you!
