The most extraordinary performance of the Reubke I have ever, and am unlikely, to ever hear again. Simon's passing was a great loss to the organ and choral world as a performer, conductor and composer. He was definitely a one off.
I was exceptionally fortunate to have been a pupil of Simon for 3 years (1973-76) at Oxford. A brilliant organist, superb choirmaster and the most generous of people you could ever possibly hope to meet. I look back on those times with the deepest gratitude.
For those more recent Proms fans wondering, this performance was the first half of 1983's Prom 11, 2 August. It was paired in the second half with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (Günther Herbig) playing Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 Eroica. I shouldn't be sorry to hear Radio 3 rebroadcast that!
