    I am afraid we can't confirm it's a bull market. It's emotions - FOMO. News of government stimulus package turn the sentiment from negative to positive. Even without much institutional involvement, the huge retail investors push the market up. Most of those who lost a lot over the past years, exited. Look at 30 Oct trade day, it open high, drop before lunch and turn higher again after lunch.

  • @EconomyRiceBall

    My reasoning is that when buying stocks you shouldn’t focus solely on the dividend yield but is to understand the fundamental of the company. If overvalue don’t buy, if undervalue and the fundamental sounds, then buy (regardless of dividend yield). But of course if the stock is undervalue + gives good dividend, double win.

    Interesting discussion. I understand why people like dividend stocks even though I am personally not really into them. The money has to come from somewhere and there is always a trade-off. Companies that are paying dividends are just taking profits, that could otherwise be used to grow the company, to pay out to shareholders. So in a way, it is a sign that the company no longer prioritizes growth. In addition, I am not sure how costly the admin/operations overheads are for distributing dividends, but I am sure there is a cost to it (legal & admin fees etc). Also, I would rather the company executives discuss how to grow the company than to discuss how much to payout each quarter. lol... Tbh, I didn't watch Kelvin's video but I think what he meant is that dividend is irrelevant to stock price in the short-term, since price typically appreciate prior to dividend payout and then drops after the payout. In this regard, I think paying dividends is a good mechanism for non-growth companies to give back to their shareholders. Whether dividend affects price in the long-term probably needs deeper research (e.g. whether paying dividend brings more demand and attention to the company).

  • @eugeneleeproperty
    @eugeneleeproperty วันที่ผ่านมา

    Thanks for the discussion guys. Few personal opinions and preferences (no right or wrong:): 1) I don’t quite like the idea of drawing down a couple of percentage from my equities to fund my retirement. Because by doing so, by and large, it actually reduces my ownership of the underlying company. Unless, the company does share buy backs more than the percentage that I draw down every year. On the filo side, if the company keeps issuing new shares every year and coupled with me drawing down, then it will be super dilutive. 2) we should always look at the company holistically, rather than just investing based on certain metrics/criteria in isolation. That’s why I never invest just for dividends or purely for high growth. If company can continuing growing and good fundamentals, and if market presents a buying opportunity for me (becomes undervalue), then I buy. 3) if point 2 is fulfilled, and I get regular dividends, I wouldn’t mind. Upon receipt of dividend, I can decide whether to reinvest back into the company (fundamentals still remain sound and/or undervalue) or reinvest the dividends into better investment vehicles. 4) if I sell an equity, it will always be either I need the money, or there are better opportunities elsewhere, or for risk management when market becomes exuberant. Drawing down certain percentage on a regular autopilot basis is a big no for me.

    The main advantage of dividends is you dont have to sell during a financial downturn. Imagine being retired and drawing down on a growth portfolio that is 30% down. The sensible strategy is to buy growth during the accumulation phase of your life and switch to dividend in the drawdown phase.

It depends on the people itself.

    I think the problem is people misunderstanding what kelvin meant. To many of them "Dividend is Irrelevant" meant that dividend is useless/ a bad investment. And if this is presented to someone who heavily invested into dividend stocks, it will definitely trigger them a lot more because they put a lot of their net worth into it. But kelvin's point is that dividend paying assets are not that different from non paying growth stocks. 1 takes a cut from their profit to pay investor, while the other maximize their growth bumping up the share price.

    Good companies should growth its dividend paid out over the years. That is what I term perpetual growth dividend raisers. At cost the yield increases. On the other hand dividend on market value will determine the actual yield to the share price. 2 reasons dividend yield fall. 1. Share price over run its value. 2. Reduces in dividend pay out. Dividend guide me to make my decision to buy or sell. It also increases our war chess or reduce our war chess. Companies Cashflow is very important. Good companies usually have dividend payout policy. For banks about 50%. Dividend is one of a good guide for my investment journey. In the past I had bought banks but not for long. Banks yield are low and the share price tends to track business cycle. During last pandemic I bought into DBS, dividend yield 6.5% to over 7% when most businesses were badly hit. I sold 1/2 of my DBS shares at about $33 dividend yield fall below 4.5%. Fast forward beginning of this year DBS Fy 2023 profits increased and declared bonus 1 for 10 with same dividend payout that mean 7.5% yield. I bought into DBS aggressively DBS latest trading at $38 yield 5.6% am I selling. Not do soon! If those focus on price many has sold out prematurely. Just imagine DBS after paying still had about $5 billions to growth its business. REIT dividend payout 90% and businesses depend loans are risky.

    One point of dividend is for business owners to pay themselves, they take a low salary so the company has a high nett profit but declares high dividends since they are the majority of shareholders, thereby "cashing out" of the profits and this is tax free so also a way to be taxed lower on their own income. from this perspective, those who loan to pay dividends are somewhat a moral hazard and a negative signal, whereby those who give dividends on a low payout ratio from earnings definitely want their business to be sustainable and be a golden chicken that lays eggs forever thereby giving confidence as well in the company's longevity. Similar to how individuals allocate our salary for investing/saving/spending. I think dividend is just how business allocate its earnings to self reinvestment/distribution for spending(dividend)/saving. Does not mean reinvesting everything is good, neither is reinvesting nothing at all bad, a balance is preferable.

    I view dividend / shares buyback as a way of unlocking the intrinsic value of a company especially when a company is severely undervalued. Sometimes a company can be slow growing / flat in earnings due to macroeconomic but cash rich at more than 50% or even 70% of the market cap yet the share price keeps going down. **looks at Chinese stocks**
