Thank you!!! My tickly cough calmed down
That's awesome! Glad it helped!
Will it help with laryngitis?
It should help with the muscle tension associated with laryngitis. There may also be associated improvement in your voice quality, but that depends on what's causing the laryngitis.
Amazing! I had unilateral vocal fold paralysis after thyroid removal surgery and since then I have been losing my voice. After this massage, the tension and pain disappeared and the voice came back!
Wow! That's fantastic! Wishing you continued success!
Note to self: Steam 1-2x/day for 5-10min with a sipping motion
I have chronic pharyngitis but no fever and this happens when i have the flu and during allergy season, recently i literally threw up cause it itched so bad, it usually gets worse when i have to talk, i take antihistamines cough pills, drink lots of water and make sure to blow my nose to flush the mucus out and prevent more mucus flowing down there… i also have sinus problems so its super fun! Alcohol and smoking makes it way worse so keep away from them…
It sounds like you're doing some great things to manage this, but it sounds severe enough that you may want to see an ENT for a second opinion. The rescue breathing techniques certainly can't hurt, but this may require more intensive medical intervention as well. Best of luck.
But the last one (the pulling down the larynx) my larynx doesn't come down with fingers but i can move it side to side is this normal right? I mean it shouldn't technically come down with fingers? 🤔
It can come down a bit. As you work the larynx gently from side to side, give it a tug downwards like you're gently pulling the window shade down at night. The muscles will stretch, and the larynx will lower. You can get a sense of how the larynx feels when it lowers by putting your finger on your Adam's apple, and then yawning. You'll feel your larynx drop.
Your brick wall is breathing. And thanks for the steaming advice. I am one of the most heard voices at Walt Disney World over the last 30 years so I am always looking for tips.
Yes, those were the "good old days" before we could afford a studio where the brick wall is permanent 🙂I studied voiceovers with a Hannah Barbera voiceover artist, so always happy to hear from voice actors! See our website for more information about the steaming options (link is in the comments below the video). Wishing you continued success!
@@VoiceCareWithKaren Thank you! So much good info in these videos.
I am a voice actor and have a hard time getting a good voice for my work. I need a good, resonant voice for reading copy and recording it. I often feel something is on the throat, even after drinking throat coat tea and snorting Flonase.
In addition to fluids, try inhaling steam with a sipping motion, or use nebulized saline from a portable nebulizer. Then as the mucus loosens, use our safe throat clearing methods, including a sip and a tight swallow (scrunch your chin down to your neck when you swallow).
This is amazing. Thank you so much
So glad it's helpful! 🙂

Good tip!
Glad it was helpful!
Im a choir teacher that just started and three days later my voice feels so weak i have a gig this weekend and hoping this helps at least destress my muscles as the stress was building up this week
It's worth a try, especially if there's a stress component as you mentioned. Start with 5 minutes once a day as tolerated and see if it helps.
HERE'S A HUGE BIT OF INFORMATION I'VE RECENTLY DISCOVERED ON MY OWN: I thought I should share this bit of information with all singers and if they are on any medications. Like many people have discovered Chat GPT. Incredibly, the information that I found was exactly what I have been whinging about for over 10 years listening to my voice disintegrate, lose air, shakiness, hard to stay on pitch and overall just really difficult to control the air when I sang. I was prescribed Xanax (Alprax/Alprazolam/the Benzo family etc) when I was young as 16 or 17 years old for anxiety. My dose started at about .5mg and eventually led to 2 times 2mg per day and I am now 50. over the years they really just completely deleted my anxiety...but were only supposed to be used on a very short term basis, which to me defeats the whole purpose of inventing the drug. So one night I was very bored and I typed this into Chat GPT: "How does Xanax affect a singers breathing?" In total shock I found the answer to what I had been trying to solve all this time and just had to resort to the whole problem being in my head. You could never get this in depth information in a Xanax brochure or online. This is what Chat GPT came back with: Xanax (alprazolam) is a benzodiazepine primarily used to treat anxiety and panic disorders. Its effects on a singer's breathing can be significant due to its impact on the central nervous system. Here are some key points to consider: 1. **Respiratory Depression**: Xanax can cause respiratory depression, meaning it can slow down breathing. This effect is more pronounced at higher doses. For singers, this can lead to a reduction in breath control and lung capacity, making it difficult to sustain notes and manage breathing during performances. 2. **Muscle Relaxation**: Xanax has a muscle-relaxant effect, which might lead to a reduction in the control over the diaphragm and other muscles involved in breathing. This can impair a singer's ability to use their full lung capacity and control their breath efficiently. 3. **Drowsiness and Fatigue**: Xanax often causes drowsiness and fatigue, which can affect a singer's overall energy levels and stamina. This can impact the strength and quality of their voice, as well as their ability to engage in prolonged singing sessions. 4. **Anxiety Reduction**: While reducing anxiety can be beneficial for performance anxiety, the sedative effects might outweigh the benefits by negatively affecting alertness and coordination. 5. **Coordination and Timing**: Proper breath support and timing are crucial for singing. Xanax can impair coordination, making it difficult for singers to synchronize their breathing with their vocal performance. For singers considering or using Xanax, it is crucial to discuss the potential impacts with a healthcare professional, ideally a doctor who understands both their medical history and the demands of their singing profession. Alternatives for managing anxiety that have less impact on breathing and muscle control may be explored. So there we go singers...I didn't stop there believe me :)
this is amazing! how many reps per exercise maam? Than!ks a million! this is an amazing vid, very helpful
I'm glad this is helpful. I would take a total of 3-5 minutes for the entire laryngeal massage, that is the massage, wiggle from side to side, and pulling down. Listen to your body and see if the muscles need more massage before you do the wiggle and pull-down. If you're really tight, some moist heat on the neck first might be helpful.
04:00 Rescue breathing technique
Thank you!🙏🏽😊
Stop fucking yapping and get to the point
Karen
Wunderbar !
Thank you!
Hi Karen, is this method of breathing good for singing only or should it be used all the time?
Both singers and non-singers can benefit from this technique. This method of breathing is actually good for LIFE! It reduced the effects of stress on the nervous system, promotes better sleep, and has many other benefits as well.
Thank you , have been coughing for 6 years and this helps although I am having to use this breathing for a long time. Been 10 min or more, when I slow down cough begins again .
I would say to keep using our methods as part of a comprehensive cough control program. As you can see by the video, there can be many causes, and those have to be investigated and managed if possible as well. Best of luck!
Please provide transcript in English
I believe the English transcript is there, under the description and chapters.

Wow it worked 😄 excellent 👌
Wonderful! Now you have an effective technique you can use any time you need it! 🙂
Ok, thank you, It's works but i feel thé urge of thé cough yet. What i have to do ? It's like i can't not cough but It's still répétitive and Come back again after resisiting to the cough
@@Hovsep231 you may have to continue the technique longer until the urge to cough stops. But per the video, you may need additional medical input to see why the cough is persisting. Don't give up; keep practicing and seeking answers. 👍
i’m a girl 16 and having so many voice cracks while talking i hope this helps
There are so many reasons why a voice can "crack". This technique is certainly an important part of a voice training/voice therapy program, but an ENT should examine your vocal cords to see why your voice is cracking.
So I did these massages and very quickly felt extreme dizziness, light headedness, chest tightness and palpitations. My whole body feels weak and shaky. Clearly, I massaged the carotid by mistake. Or is this normal? It feels like it has been an hour now and the worst of the symptoms are gone. But it is still coming in waves. Less severe each time. I have a lot of tension and tightness in my throat, so I want to do this right. Please help! I posted this on another video, but I just want to be sure I am not doing something wrong or dangerous. I never get massages. The sensation is quite scary
This is definitely not the expected response. You may be hypersensitive, or you may have squeezed a bit. Either way, I would leave the area alone, and check in with your doctor to see what's going on. And any time you touch your neck, my advice would be to do one side at a time, and start with only 20-30 seconds. If you can't tolerate that, then I would advise avoiding this technique. Ask you doctor!
@@VoiceCareWithKaren Okay! Thank you very much :>
Is it permanent ?
It shouldn't be; muscle tension dysphonia often responds very effectively to voice therapy. Laryngeal massage should also help you. Check out our video on that, and see if you get some relief: th-cam.com/video/QUDNXLSrOXk/w-d-xo.htmlsi=8WA7iwD_s9SAXGrf

She worked very hard and was successful in complying with her vocal hygiene and voice therapy program. She is awesome!
@@VoiceCareWithKaren can we have sweet voice without vocal surgery But having vocal hygiene and vocal therapy only
@@OppaOppa-h5i yes, depending on the nature of the pathology. Voice therapy is always the first course of action.
Thats exactly wat i got.
See if these techniques help you!
There’s a kind of clicking that happens in the right side when I download step 5 😐
Do more of the "pull down" and less of the "side to side". It's a pretty common problem.
I thought this was bs. Im am sick and lost my voice. Did this and woke up this morning talking. Not at 100, but its a start. Im doing this right now. Til im 100 percent. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽 Thank u.
That's wonderful news! Keep up with a program of good vocal hygiene, some vocal warm-ups, larynx massage, and of course, guidance from an ENT/laryngologist and hopefully a voice therapist. You can do it!!
Since I have had my thyroid removed, my voice has become different, I don’t even recognize my voice when I sing. I loved to sing but unable now. I am unsure if I can correct this problem.
Thyroid issues and surgery can often affect the voice. Get examined by a fellowship-trained laryngologist who can determine what is causing your voice problem. There are many techniques that can help you, once the actual problem is identified. Best of luck!
My 12 yr old has asthma but it's usually under control but he's started coughing often but his voice is changing, so I was thinking might just be everything growing in there. Might have him try this just to see if it helps a bit. Ty
There's no harm in trying these methods in addition to asthma treatment, but if this is truly asthma, it can't be ignored and should be under a doctor's care and treatment. Make sure to follow up with his doctor if it persists.
Me too
🎉 Thanks a lot for this video.
You're very welcome!
Laryngospasms aren't fun, especially after you have swallowed food. Another good trick when it hits is to press on one nostril and slowly breathe through the other.
Thank you very much
Glad this was helpful!
I got these symptoms but instead of pain in my throat it’s pain in my stomach, like my muscles in my stomach get super tight and I gotta prepare to talk with it and for that reason when people talk to me sometimes I delay before I speak bc my muscles in my stomach are tightening up trying to get prepared to speak, also it stops me from speaking louder a lot of times and makes me run out of breath quick from talking, what do I do? This has been happening since I was little and it keep getting worse, not really pain when swallowing tho, do u think I have this? I have the symptoms that I said super severe, ppl always say “put some base in ur voice” but I literally can’t, the muscles in my stomach won’t let me at times, please help!
It sounds like the abdominal muscles are not first relaxing in order for you to take an easy natural inhalation. They're contracting too soon and/or perhaps too forcefully. I can't give you any direct medical advice, certainly not without seeing you and knowing your entire case. You may want to consult with a local voice therapist, and perhaps a knowledgeable physical therapist and/or breathing expert. If it's any help at all, watch our breathing training video. th-cam.com/video/Cn_oJQtVemM/w-d-xo.htmlsi=udZzuNhtz_3HUNHq
@@VoiceCareWithKaren who would u recommend I see to get properly diagnosed?
@@Nick-f3h3p my best recommendation would be to ask your regular doctor for a referral to a physical therapist who is knowledgeable about the breathing apparatus, but first have your ENT/laryngologist take a look at your vocal cords and see how they are functioning.
❤❤❤😊
So glad you liked this!
