How to Build a Rock-Solid Shed Ramp (Riding Mower Approved ✅)
So I needed to build a shed ramp for my riding mower. I will show you how to build a shed ramp out of treated wood using a wedge stringer design instead of the more common ledger board design most people use for shed ramps.
Building a strong shed ramp strong enough for a riding mower is fairly simple and can be done in an afternoon.

0:48 What's a Ledger Board?
1:14 Building the Shed Ramp Frame
3:24 Gravel Base for Shed Ramp
4:14 Dealing with Obstructions
5:42 Adding Optional Blocking
6:00 Adding Deck Boards to Shed Ramp
7:39 Ramp Final Thoughts
Shed Ramp Tools & Materials:
Circular Saw (Miter Saw Optional)
Power Drill
Speed Square
Tape Measure
Pencil
2" / 3" Deck Screws
Deck Boards
Appropriate Dimensional Lumber
Crushed Stone
For my build, I used 2 - 3" deck screws, 3/4 inch treated deck boards and a treated 2x6. You're needs in materials may vary by the height of your shed, how your shed is built and the terrain and space available to you surrounding your shed.

Could a simple Fridge Magnet be an effective Stud Finder?
มุมมอง 6983 ปีที่แล้ว
This video is a little experiment to see if you can find studs behind drywall with a simple fridge magnet. Is it possible to find studs this way and how easy does it work? I used some today, sometimes you gotta experiment with other types of drill bits
Great concept but what if the head of the screw is compketely broke off. There are tgese cheap contractor screws whise heads are notorious fir breaking iff. So are there other designs of extractors...thanjs
There's a hollow extractor design... www.rockler.com/screw-extractor .

I love the simplicity of your method. Great tip.
Great tips!
Every time I use j b weld 8 times out of ten it doesn’t hold not a big fan of this product
How much oil and what type oil
1.7 liters on mine... check your manual to make sure it is the same. 10W-30 oil is what I use. Here is what John Deere sells www.lowes.com/pd/John-Deere-32-oz-4-Cycle-10W-30-Conventional-Engine-Oil/1000594691.
I’m here because I’m unhappy with my kreg drill block. It works fine for shallow holes, but when I had to drill a 3” hole in a block of wood I was sorely disappointed when the hole wasn’t perpendicular - not even close. I’ll try the CD method, but if that doesn’t work I’m gonna get a proper drill guide. I really don’t want to make space in my shop for a drill press, so a drill guide seems like exactly what I need. Thanks for a great and informative (and efficient) video!
I haven't used the kreg drill block, but my Milescraft drill block works great. In my opinion, a portable drill guide would be perfect for you if your space constrained but want something a little more robust than a drill block.
Sears,Hechingers, went bankrupt because of Home Depot and Lowes --- prices. Sears customers were getting old and passing away,in my city. Not because of f screw extractors. Facts
Will this work with a screw in metal? I'm trying to take apart my oven door to clean between the glass and surprise the screws are totally stripped.
Yes you can use an extractor with screws in metal, but are you sure you need to take apart your oven door to clean it?
it just keeps spinning never extracts the screw, no matter wich one I use
That happens, sorry to hear that. Sometimes you need to keep at it. Drill deeper and try to extract again. Sometimes it doesn't work though. No guarantees.
I broke my femur in a biking accident......cleaned it with whiskey, fixed it with JB Weld. 12 years later I'm still walking!
Really great tutorial! It worked the first time :)
Ps thanks 😊 for the tips
I’m about to use it to fix my gazebo after a hurricane broke it
I've taped washers the same size of the bit together to make a guide. It works well.
Clever
Use a table saw. Make sure your fence is square to the blade. Adjust the blade height to half the blade thicknes.. run a scrap piece across. Use a depth guage to make sure the cut is even throughout....repeat this process with another piece. Join the two pieces together with wood glue making sure the cut is aligned. And now use a bit that is the same thickness as the blade and now you have a perfect 90 pilot hole jig.
You are the man
"So you have a scrip screw" 😆
Great video. Now, can I do the opposite and jump start my car with the lawn mower?
Depends on how weak the car battery is... you may be able to jump a car off a 12 volt lawn tractor battery provided the car battery wasn't too weak. I'd disconnect the donor battery from the lawn mower battery first before trying.
Thanks 🙏🏼👍🏼
good stuff man!
Thanks much for sharing and for all the tips. I got a magnetic stud finder per your recommendation (not same model but works great) and it was super helpful.
So helpful, ty!
The 710+ also has a green LED at the centre of the stud
I didn't know about that... thanks for posting this as it might help others decide which version to get.
Thank you SO much. Great ideas Bud that WORKED fine for me. Thank you again. 👍🏻👍🏻🙏🙏
The reason you breaking bits is because you're doing it wrong. Use the drill bit correctly, not in reverse then use extractor in reverse. Your crap set is actually pretty good!
Thanks for the reminder. I have a drill block, now just locate it 😅
I left the cover off, it's a nuisance and serves no purpose
all drill bits will break if they are abused and get hot enough. a broken bit isn't an excuse to not buy a specific brand lol
True, but I felt like it broke really easily so I was a bit salty over it justified or not. That was fairly mild compared to some of the colorful language I've used when I'm not filming.
My number 6 extractor is too big for a 1/2” drill, now what?
Not sure what it would fit in but hand tools are always an option. Ideally a T-handle wrench is best, but anything that allows you to grip and rotate the extractor while maintaining firm downward pressure would be fine.
I find it much easier to slot what's left of the broken fastener, and turn it out with a flat blade screwdriver. I've NEVER had any luck with a left-handed drill bit or a screw extractor!
I've done that. It's not a bad option.
Thanks a bunch!! I think I used these bits like once 20 years ago but completely forgot how they worked. Had a stripped screw on a $900 power amp circuit board 😣I was horrified getting that drill near it but I only had to drill it a little bit then used a crescent wrench to do the other part and like you had to go to a bigger size. And when I hear that thing break loose! It was glorious! 🤩
That sound of stuck fastener breaking free is one of the best sounds in the world.
But most other videos on this subject say to use the drill bit in the conventional clockwise direction and then the extractor in reverse. Unless you use the special double ended extractors. Why do you drill counter clockwise?
I actually screwed up and thought I had a reverse drill bit with my set. If you have a reverse drill bit drill in reverse, if you have a regular one drill as normal. It would make more sense to have a reverse drill bit with these extractor sets... but apparently that is not always what you get.
You drill counterclockwise for two reasons: 1) So if the bit "grabs," it doesn't drive the broken screw/bolt in deeper and 2) If the bit "grabs," it might turn the broken screw out, eliminating the need for the extractor. I've NEVER had a left-handed bit "grab" and extract a broken fastener. LOL
man this saved me. I have a mini bike that ripped a head of a bolt right out on the exhaust. Didn’t know what to do. Thank you man!
VERY helpful. My JD E110 started right up. Thank youuuuu!!!
this video is awesome
Silly question, but should I start my vehicle to help with the charge? I noticed during the video you only started the mower. Thank you in advance.
|I wouldn't start your vehicle as you risk damaging the smaller electrical system of your lawn tractor. You should have plenty of juice from the car battery alone anyway.
for me it's a homemade drill block made from an off-cut of hardwood. 8 bucks cheaper than buying one but you do need access to a drill press 👍
If you got access to a drill press then yeah definitely save yourself the money. But if you don't, then $8 is a no brainer for a drill block.
Thank you very much for such very clear instructions!
Awesome thank you 😊
SEARS was in business for 132 years. Their down turn started in 2006 after 120 years in business and before that CRAFTMAN was a great tool to have. You don’t have a business for 132 years if you’re shite! I still have a lot of my grandfathers CRAFTMAN tools that still work excellent. I know there are better tools out now with more updated versions but the point is my CRAFTMAN tools have not quit on me. Sears also supported the troops. When a National Guard soldier who worked for Sears was called away he/she still received his pay from Sears. Maybe just stick to your videos.
Not saying Sears was always bad. I'll trade my any of my more modern-era Craftsman hand tools for vintage Craftsman hand tools every day of the week, especially those of your grandfather's day. However, I still think modern-era Sears quality declined quite a bit from it's apex, even more so after Eddie Lampert took over. Just my opinion.
Bro, you're always gonna offend someone these days w/ a pithy comment. Don't even sweat it. I thought it was funny as I understood the spirit in which it was made. As all good content creators know (those who care about their sanity anyway): don't listen to the turkeys🦃 Keep on keepin' on; and seriously, keep makin' silly comments--they make the average DIY fella smile amidst the irritating rage of a stripped screw.
Play my music while you work brother
You did great
great video. Tried the extractor screws. In the end i managed to remove really tight screws by drilling into the screw in reverse, till it removed it. Perfect
Which method would work best for using a hammer drill on a concrete wall? I need perfectly straight holes to hang a wood rack on my garage wall.
I'd probably try to make a jig out of a 2x4 with straight holes spaced as needed for your wood rack to act as a drill block/guide. I'd also anchor the jig to the concrete with tap cons temporarily. That's the only thing I can think of that might keep you honest with a hammer drill.
@@DIYWithAaron Thank you!! I appreciate the response!
I was going to make a floating shelf out of a 1 inch board and I needed to drill on the thickness of the board so this is what I did to make my whole straight I got a another piece of board and cut out A straight piece and made it 1 and 1/2 in in width 6 in in length after drilling the straight hole into the middle of the thickness of the wood I then glued a piece of wood on top that was 1 in thick 6in log 6 in width top and bottom so that it slides it looks like a c-channel like a letter C if you look on the side of it and that slides into the board because the one and a half inches will guide your drill bit nice and straight and Improvement to the idea you could add a piece of pipe so that you don't mess up the hole that's made out of wood since the drill could go sideways a little and then make the whole crooked so that's why you would put a piece of pipe but since I had steady hands I just did it this way I didn't feel like doing extra work with the pipe plus I didn't have a tool to cut the pipe ended up not using that wood cuz it was too heavy so I ended up using quarter of an inch plywood some high density spray foam and I just put a hole using some Square Dill rods to create the holes that the pipe with or the spike or whatever you call it that goes through the holes to hold it up and I glue those in there where all the holes needed to be at and the rest I just sprayed it was pray foam to keep the spray foam from bending the wood I just made another floating shelf out of thicker wood and then that would fit inside that that's keeping from warping it and that's how I did it and then I just shaved off a chunk with an utility knife those ones that you can pull it out more and more blade a light weight strong making a lightweight floating shelf i did not needit to hold heavy thing it worked out fin
I didn't quite follow your entire description of what you did, but I think I got the gist. I'm glad it worked out for you.
Get s small plastic mirror, drill a hole into it and use the mirror effect as a guide. you almost always will get within 1-2 degree accuracy depending how slow you go. then i see you CD Method.
Great tutorial! Great tips and you hit on a bunch of “basic” things for guys like me who stink around the house.
Very clear and helpful!!! Thanks a lot!!
