Gravity by Einar Ask and the Same
In August of 1984, my wife, Juli, lived with me in our studio apartment and plans were being made for a beautiful Church Wedding. I was done with instruction at the UW, and only needed to hand in one final paper from my manual typewriter in order to get my bachelor's degree.
Juli went to Mercer Island to continue wedding planning with her mom and to let me finish my paper, which was due the next morning.
But this was SEAFAIR SUNDAY and the BLUE ANGELS were going to fly. The freeways Juli had to travel were CLOSED. I had no idea. And the SOUND of those jets was loudest thing I had ever heard in the city.
I had not been in Seattle during Seafair since 1968, so the sounds of the jets was very distracting. I culd not work on my paper. As a great fan of procrastination, I reached to music and I punched out a rhythm on my 808 and invented a simple bass line and melody on a Pro One and a Micro Moog. With a little Casio for fun.
I recorded the result on a Tascam 644 Portastudio. The words and music are all off the top of my head, and it only served the purpose of clearing my head to finish writing so I could graduate from the UW.
I played this song on KCMU a time or two, but otherwise it just pops up sometimes at home. A year later Juli and I walked down the street and saw sir Mixalot filming "Posse on Broadway". Yeah. That was the way it should be done. But my procrastination did at least help finish that paper. :)

From the recent release of our 1983 recordings called "A Consolation" which is available at arsdivina.bandcamp.com/album/... . In a 1983 radio interview with the whole band, Katie described this song as being "about another one of Einar's ill-fated romances." As Einar, yeah, I have to agree with that. I wrote the poem first for a class at the UW, and I had been working on the music separately. ...

Because I had a job far from home and a long commute and a young family back at home I had no free time in the early 90s. And we were trying to make an album. I had a rhythm, bass line and the seed of a hook floating in my head as I drove home one night. But I'll give it a 7 because it's easy to dance to like a robot. :)

This is the only song of mine that was released. It was available on "Elektro-Industrial Sounds of the Northwest" on Cleopatra. That compilation from 1995 is long out of print, but if you can find it and enjoy that era of Industrial music, you should enjoy the whole thing. I must say that this song, like everything I record, is basically a pop song, so it is an odd stand out on this CD. But hey...

I'm so glad I ran across this. I fished out of Pelican and Sitka in the mid '70s. Carved my name into Rose's bar back then. She bought this beautiful bar, smooth and shiny, and Little John carved his name into it right under the bell, when she was sleeping and her daughters were tending bar. At 12 and 14 yo. I fished salmon and halibut out of Pelican, sitka, and elfin cove for many years. Some of the best memories I have. So good to see your dad's slides, takes me right back.

If a SS Princess Marguerite life preserver still exists anywhere, I would love to purchase one. I rode her the 1st time - age 3, almost 4 - in 1978 and every year thereafter for summer vacations. I collect old art, books from her too. Here's hoping.

Growing up in Seattle in the 70's, my friends and I would do a day excursion to Victoria (I think it was about $20 round trip). We'd show our high school IDs to enter Canada! It was a different world back then--Afternoon Tea at the Empress was only $3.50 (though we opted for the Ruben Sandwiches at Sam's Deli instead). The highlights would be the Provincial Museum, Royal London Wax Museum and Craigdarroch Castle. The Princess Marguerite was like a mini-Queen Mary; It had mahogany lounge chairs on the decks and state rooms. It's a shame the old vessel was scrapped.

Good to see people still commenting recently! First voyage for me on her was at 3yrs old, summer of 1978. Every July was a family vacation to Victoria from Seattle on the Maggie for 4 or 5 days. I think we took the Clipper its first year - the last year Maggie sailed? - Cant recall if those routes overlapped but pretty sure as the Clipper didnt dock where it does now. The Delta Laurel Point Inn was the home away from home. Highlights for me the Royal Prov Museum as well (do you remember the giant waterfall wall thing in the main area?) The old mining area in there with sound effects was a trip for a little kid back then! Not a big Empress fan, but walked through it countless times. Wax Museum + Undersea Gardens also cool. Was there an underwater restaurant down there or just a walkthrough tour? Vague memories. Inner Harbour, Parliament Building night lights were great. Double-decker bus ride and Clydesdale horse trolleys...Havent been to Victoria since 1991. I'm sure it's gotten pretty bad crimewise...Was bad 30yrs ago. Good stuff, thx for reading and letting me rant old memories!

Hi Einar I was looking for info on Princess Marguerite & SO pleased to find your channel! I was on one of these last trips to Victoria (don’t think it was this very last one) I asked a deck hand about the engines/power plant & he took me below deck to have a look. What a treat! If I recall correctly, it was two big diesels driving a generator, that in turn drove a motor that turned the prop(s) All in one amazing & somewhat direct drive. Hundred-year-old hybrid technology. I’d LOVE to see it again, or at least photos/video/diagrams. All the best to your family! Quentin in Bothell 🤓

As a young teen, I remember my family going from Seattle to Victoria on this ship. We had a storeroom and left in the morning and returned at night. We visited the Empress Hotel and took a bus tour of Buchart Gardens. It was fun and had the atmosphere of a long sea voyage even though it was a few hours each way as I recall. I remember a crewman told me the ship produced 16,000 horsepower. I thought she could sail forever.

Very nice videos there. The lighthouse early on that you couldn’t ID looked like the entrance to Elfin Cove. I did flooring for Ingvald on a couple houses he built in Sitka. We visited a lot while I was working and then when I was done I would sit and have a cup of tea with him and get to hear great stories. What an amazing man. The picture of the mountains far away looked like they were all the LaPerousse Range on the 50 fathom drag on the Fairweather grounds.
