Lovely, smooth sounding engine. May I ask what door mirrors you have fitted? They look different to the usual Tex type.
@@FMFGUF I honestly don’t know what the mirrors are. I bought them at a show many years ago. They are decent quality but are plastic chrome as it happens.
Is that the original rear shelf Craig or is it a fiberglass coated with something, cheers mate,
@@stevemiller8794 It’s a fibreglass replica from GS escorts Steve but looks great and was a perfect fit 👍
Amazing work as always Craig great looking car credit to you 👍
@@tonyaylott4555 Cheers Tony. Appreciate that 👍
I’m currently working on a project with a Vauxhall Viva HC and considering doing an engine swap with the ST170 engine. Do you know anyone who has done this specific swap on a Viva HC, or do you have any advice on how to make it work? I’d really appreciate any tips or guidance you could share to help with the conversion, especially regarding the transmission and differential setup.
@@y212.21 I’ve never heard of this conversion being carried out to a viva, but it’s certainly do able. The ST 170 will fit a wide range of ford gearboxes and there are kits out there to fit other gearboxes to the ST engine, such as the Mazda MX5 gearbox. Then it’s a case of making engine mounts that fit the bolt configuration casting of the engine block and pick up on the Viva engine mounting points. The same then goes for the gearbox mounts. Prop shafts can be custom made to your required length with the correct flanges / Yorks fitted + balanced. The aftermarket engine management systems for the ford, can work in any vehicle so that should be straight forward. Exhausts can be fabricated to suit. The hardest part will just be making all the mounts to securely fit the engine into the viva as I’m not sure of anybody who makes these conversion parts. Have a chat with Retro Ford about it. They are a very knowledgeable bunch on all things ST, Zetec or Duratec related and they might be aware of any parts available to help you.
@@performanceclassics1986 Thank u for the information. Could u also provide me with an email address, if possible?
Would love to see this with Jamie on Officially Gas. Love the Original Mini Clubman.
What is that tool you used for bending the rear quarter panel for the overlap before welding panel over the top
@@davegriffiths1248 It’s called a joggler. If you want one, buy a decent one because the cheap ones just don’t put a nice crisp fold in the steel 👍
Lovely, had loads of minis back in the day always messing on with them, snapped a 1275 coopers s crank .
Gorgeous looking Clubby well done! 👌
@@timeames1977 Thanks 👍
I’ve always loved you mini Craig, for me it’s the gorgeous paintwork. ( have we seen it bonnet-on?)

I've currently got a 230 bhp 5 port build. Just starting to get going on a big power K1200 RS build. Great work.
@@ElliotSTR Thanks 👍 That’s great power for a 5 port. Amazing what can be gained from an old 1950’s designed A Series 😎
Do you compete with it Elliot? ( any wins?)
@@philtucker1224 no, just hoon around Yorkshire!
@@performanceclassics1986 yeah it's at its limits though 25 psi to make that! The 16v will break into the 300s at the same boost.
@@ElliotSTR Still impressive though. Even more so impressive that the gearbox withstands such power figures.
Awesome awesome awesomeness! Love it

Big love to ya. I miss mine coopa. yeah jack night were the dogs bollx I had one as was so happy with it I was lucky to have had a set of Johnny mims and 4 inc su which were more rare than the gear box
Great little car and a superb build 👏🏻
@@maverick4177 Thanks very much 👍
Could do with knowing the drive pressure (backpressure) as that is likely to be your limitation given the other inlet related mods you have. The fact you were having issues around the wastegate self bleeding suggests you have fairly high drive pressure. Thats not necessaily an issue but a metric to be aware of as it does indicate that your exhaust housing is a bottleneck. You can run a two port actuator with a control valve to hold the wastegate shut or go to an external with a 4 port valve, all depends how hard you want to run it. Boost isn't magic...all things being equal with no other bottlenecks bar of boost will double the power output & cams aren't quite as critical as many would have you believe either. Your air filter placement isn't great either as you'll be picking up a fair bit of heat - you didn't mention your charge temps but thats basically free power although like everything its a compromise & you certainly have minimal space! Super tidy build.
@@SB-vb8ch Thanks for the great info and lengthy reply 👍. If I was chasing bigger power, these are all good examples of how I could improve things. As it is, I’m happy with the power at between 8 & 12 psi. Anymore and I think it would be un drive-able. We’ve discussed moving the air filter to the front grille for cooler air intake. The problem is room as you’ve stated and I don’t really want to drill holes in the inner wings to route the air filter pipework. Ive never tested air charge temps but what I do know is that the pipework that enters the intercooler is warm to the touch and is very cool to the touch on the outlet of the intercooler. I do know of various people that run external waste gates etc but as this is only ever going to be a fast road car, I’m not that intent on chasing anymore power. It’s the gearbox I’m most worried about 👍 one thing I am looking to fit is a turbo smart boost controller so I can have it switchable between 8 psi for pottering or 12psi for fun.
Great to see and hear the turbo working 💯👍
@@johnrowell942 cheers John 👍
Fantastic tune out. Great info. Personally I think the BMW head conversion is the way to go with a Mini. Hopefully one day I’ll do one
@@bernardwarr4187 I agree about the head. They look great and can be done for a reasonable price too 👍
@@performanceclassics1986 come very close to buying and head and a bike to break, so will happen, but will be as cheap as possible. Like the idea of using are recurved Lucas distributor?

Stumbled upon theses videos and loving them. What great build! 16v. Injection. AND turbo! That’s the stuff you dreamt as a kid! But do you find 6 gears too many for a small car? I had a fiat panda 100hp That I absolutely loved. Apart from it had a 6 speed box. I was forever changing gears just going to the shops. How have you found the 6speed box?
@@simonmenzies3142 Thanks for the great comment. I don’t mind the 6 speed box other than the fact that it’s straight cut, Dog engagement and obviously very noisy. Other than that it’s absolutely fine. Very very annoying on a long journey though 🤣
@@performanceclassics1986 I can imagine lol I got in my friends clubman a few years back kw and loved the fact it was four speed. So much more fun to drive and so refreshing. But tbe 5th overdrive is nice to have. Is a 5th straight through 1:1 like a 4th gear. And the 6th overdrive Or are both 5th and 6th less than 1:1 do you know. Your build has got me thinking!
@@simonmenzies3142 I’m not entirely sure on the gear ratios. I’ve owned the gearbox for around 18 years now and it was brand new when I bought it. The drop gears from crank to gearbox are 1.1 ratio but I’m not sure on the gearbox ratios or the final drive. Too many years ago now 🤣🤣🤣
Hi, just come across your video, I used to own the Escort Cosworth back in 2003, it’s great to see it again. Thanks Rick
Hi I just want to say I am really enjoying this build all the way down in sunny SA. I was wondering have you managed to finish it yet?
@@dominiquebeech2784 Yes it’s all complete now but hasn’t seen much road use due to having loads of other things to do. I’m planning on getting it used a lot more next summer 🤞🤞🤞
@@performanceclassics1986 do you have any videos of it completed? I would love to show my younger brother as we both owned the same many once upon a time but at it at different times in our lives.

Would you mind sharing a rough cost of a classic ford to st170 conversion. With those throttle bodies. I’m interested in getting good mpg as well as power. Which I don’t think webbers will achieve. Just the conversion ignoring the price of the engine and gearbox. So once those are bought the price to then get that running in my mk1 escort. Which currently has a 1.3 Crossflow. Many thanks
@@simonmenzies3142 Without sitting down and working out every individual price, it would be a rough guess but you will need Throttle bodies, Engine management, an exhaust system, water rail, engine mounts, a sump, Flywheel and clutch. Using decent quality parts such as retro Ford, your probably looking at around £4000-£4500 but you could do it for cheaper using cheaper parts
@@performanceclassics1986 fantastic thanks for tbe reply. It now gives me a time frame in my mind of how long to come at this over. I’ll pick up tbe wngine and gearbox. Then start on the conversion parts list. Thank you👍🏻
Like you I’d did not wear gloves. However I have now started wearing nitrile gloves they certainly keep your up hands a lot cleaner, but still allow plenty of feel. I now use the orange ones like Ed China, they are just a wee bit thicker than the medical type gloves.
Cracking build. Spent that much on the car, nothing left for a new pair of jeans 😂
🤣🤣🤣 cheers 👍
Where's Episode 2?
Fantastic build, and good on ya! Watching your videos has inspired me to buy one and hopefully complete it to a reasonable standard….but you’ve probably been asked 100 times but what is the name of the colour..and what colour are the strips. Cheers 👍🏼
Thanks for the comment 👍. The colour is Sebring Red and from memory I think the stripes are saffron yellow from DMB Graphics. Best of luck with your build 👍
What a truly beautiful car. My parents owned a Ford Escort Mark 1 'Mexico' from 1973 to 1984 and I loved the bones of that car but it had to be sold for not much money sadly as at the time it needed too much doing to get it through it's M.O.T but growing up I had some adventures in it including going to Cornwall and the radiator caught fire and pre-kids Mum and Dad drove it all the way to Spain on holiday. The colour of your escort is so vibrant the one my parents had was copper with four big spot lamps on the front which are a no-no according to the Harris Family who build engines for fast Ford's. I've subscribed to your channel too.
Thanks very much for the memories and great comment Sarah. Much appreciated 👍
Great job as always Craig 👍
Thanks Tony 👍
Fantastic quality of work Craig considering the the cars on the floor in a confined space,I'd be more than happy if I was the customer.
Thanks Tony. Appreciate that 👍
Super job Craig that old minis got some future in it again now and should last many years if it’s looked after properly. I’m the same as you I just don’t see the point of doing a crap job ,if you’re bothering to do it then do it right and properly it’s done then ! Nice one fella 👍
Absolutely. It’s just a waste of your time to do it poorly or it just wouldn’t last long at all 👍
love watching you work great job
