Honestly I feel like “Lonesome Love” talks about a past relationship that didn’t really have a closure so the part that says “I call you to see you again so I can win and this can finally end” it’s like her wanting to meet this person up to show how well she’s doing without him that’s why she spends time doing her makeup and dressing up feeling confident about meeting this past lover again after a long time from the break up but her confidence disappearing when they finally meet so she loses instead of winning like she previously said she wanted to, and then the “cause nobody butters me up like you, and nobody f*cks me like me” it’s her feeling like she fucked up by meeting him up again because he’s “buttering her up” and then I feel like the “in the morning in the taxi I’m so very paying for” I guess it’s just her having maybe spent the night with him although she planned not to at the start, before meeting him, and ending up leaving in the taxi that she paid because he probably didn’t want to pay it for her and she notices how lonely she’s actually and maybe how she wants a stable relationship or something

not really southern gothic at all, but similar on a level of emotion, back story, and overarching theme, is In The Aeroplane Over the Sea by Neutral Milk Hotel. Very heavy emotion, vivid and visceral imagery, and backstory influenced by Anne Frank. Also lots of creative structure for individual tracks and one track flowing into another. Excellent album with a similar cult following.

The reason why it’s such a hit or miss because of the massive change, normally her other albums consisted of alt, punk, rock, indie, and some different genres of pop, but laurel hell is consistent of 80s pop, and that’s what threw a lot of people off because it didn’t had any electric guitar in it really and it had more synth then she ever used. Me personally, I like the change, her 80s pop era was the best era‼️‼️

the guitar solo, in my opinion, is suppose to be clashing with everything, particularly her lyrics getting drowned down by the aggressive guitar. it's suppose to feel like how you are in a toxic relationship-trying your best to talk to your partner but you'd just get ignored and drowned out.

i think that land is inhospitable is a fresher and cleaner sound for mitski and so descriptive. It really paints a picture and is so cohesive
