HVAC Service Mentor
United States
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 8 ธ.ค. 2015
I am Eric Shidell, the HVAC Service Mentor. I was a top HVAC service technician running calls and getting things running when no one else could. A true HVAC nerd, I ate, slept, and breathed HVAC systems for twenty years. In an attic on the hottest day of the year. On the roof in the middle of a blizzard. Covered in soot in the boiler room at 3AM. I also mentored technicians during that time.
Since 2014 I have trained HVAC Technicians with class offerings in a variety of areas including Gas Furnace Training, Air Conditioning Training and Boiler Training.
I have conducted training sessions through lecture and hands on at distributors like Johnstone Supply, Charles D Jones and Rampart Supply. I have also administered training for Xcel Energy and have conducted private training events for Pueblo Housing Authority, Vail Resorts and other private HVAC contractors throughout the state of Colorado. I have learned the secrets of what it takes to be at the top of the service field.

How a thermostat works part 4 what is cycle rate and why should I care?
How do you get it open?
Question, how was he a GREAT tech if he doesn’t know air flow first? You started the video with he’s a great tech with ten years of experience, which ids possible, but doubtful, then you proceeded to tell me he added 15lbs of refrigerant to a system that holds 15 lbs. no leak search? Leak search would have been the second time that he should have seen that coil. NOT A GREAT TECH, GREAT HACK MAYBE, BUT NEVER A GREAT TECH!
TD & delta-t are not the same thing.
It depends
Also, where do you actually find cold iced water or hot water?
What pressure should a replacement expansion tank be set at?
You are the man.. so what would I expect to see if I upped the head pressure with a bad txv? I see with a good txv the low side stayed the same
Great video definitely subbing.. almost condemned a drain pan heater because I got OL but when I tested ohms I got 150ohms .. so it was good but I was confused until know it’s too high of resistance to “tone” out
I will say in the last week I've worked on 4 boilers that have a max water pressure mawp of 165psi
Do you set you expansion tank to the same pressure? Thanks
Excellent Advice 💯
I recently picked up a maintenance on a Fulton pulse boiler located on the second floor of a 2 story building . max design water pressure 165, pressure relief 165. System has a leak and prv didn't allow water to refill. Made the mistake of opening it up to allow pressure thus allowing boiler to fill instead of just using bypass. Was super worried I set it to high as there was no gauge installed after prv. Didn't start leaking out the relief and boiler did fire and run through cycles. Your video just cleared up so much for me as I thought I screwed up but now I see it's all good! Thank you!!
It's 72 degrees outside. The temperature in my house is 78 degrees. The thermostat is turned off. My furnace won't stop running, even if I take the thermostat off the wall.
11:36 talk to the customer, Check what if anything is actually functioning on the unit (if your fan is working you clearly have power), if the unit is doing nothing then you check incoming power followed by control power. -if your fan is running, put your hand on the liquid line and lift the float. Did compressor start? Is there water in the cup? Check the drain. -Put a thermometer in the plenum. What’s your delta? Are you going to be looking for a refrigerant side issue or an air side issue? -maybe your compressor never started. Now you are going to the condenser. Do you have power out there? How about signal? Check your contactor and your capacitors. Are your safety switches open or closed? Do you have gas? Is condenser fan of compressor locked up? Still between 30-45 minutes in, let’s go, let’s go! Is the problem intermittent? Go back and recheck the tstat, does the temperature it is reading sync up somewhat closely with your thermometer? Is it running a program? Is the E-Prom going bad? If everything worked like clock work and was within range and the drain looked clear but you blew it out anyway, and the customer says it’s cooling and the temperature suddenly goes from 72-78 at night or randomly change the T-Stat at the very least. It’s a good starting point for solving an intermittent problem before suggesting a board change. Or after communicating with the customer you both may decide that a better strategy would be to jump the board temporarily (keeping the safeties in circuit of course) and schedule a return for a final solution after a few days. So if problem continued with a jump board then it was the stat, if it stopped it was the board. Some boards are not possible to jump though.
Here in 2024. My guy…who made me aware of the R22 ban wants to sell me a new system using another banned refrigerant R410a now. Next year he will only be selling the ‘yet to be released’ R454b systems which is already up a ban in Europe for PFAS. I think I will be going with a lower cost and more disposable system that uses R32…which just so happens is not under a DuPont patent control. I will be interviewing for my next HVAC vendor now, trying to find an honest company is really hard.
My evaporator freezed. Notes the condenser unite outside stays on all the time. About a month ago I pull the inside unite fan for cleaning and the evaporator just blowef with my compressor air gun. I changed the filter every six to eight weeks. What could be the problem.

Great Video Joe H Navy Seabee
Best every!
Audio only in the left channel. Sorry, cant watch.
Great video, but i had an issue where the walk in freezer coil was not doing a good job cooling the space, superheat at the evap was 39, Suction pressure 17psi, i had to charge the unit to get proper subcool values, how cam i use the information in this video to diagnose a restricted txv? I know this video can indicate if a txv is stuck open but what about an restriction where the txv cant allow much refrigerant through? I already checked across the drier and other places
When I was doing commercial electric common was the neutral. When I got to an industrial plant common was my power for 24 volts...sometimes 😵💫
This has helped me out understanding and better troubleshooting an issue I have going on currently! 👍
I very rarely write reviews but I decided to write you are truly God in this industry TNX!
Thank you I learned make more videos
Awesome video, thank you! One somewhat related question: Are there gloves available that provide both electrical and thermal (i.e., protection from refrigerant burns) protection?
Thanks 👍🏻
I'm convinced technicians doesn't want to trouble shoot. They just want you to replace with brand new, with something that probably didn't need to be fully replaced.
In this case the txv valve was good or bad?
I’m finding this class very informative and well tought. It’s been 40-45 years since I handled refrig/hvac. And I’m wanting to learn again. Thanks !
How to get the outdoor temperature in °C?
Awesome very intuitive helped me understand it.
I got a second opinion furnace call and when I got there, the house was 79 degrees and the lady said the furnace had not stopped running since the first guy left at 10 am. All I had to do was remove the alligator clips from R and W and guess what? The furnace shut off!!! I guess he fixed the problem and kind of left in a hurry. I didn’t charge the sweet lady but kept the jumper.
So if I’m testing a TXV on a geothermal heat pump, I can switch to heat to effectively do this same test?
This is a great video !! Easy to understand and yet it also made me think. A video on Heat Pump Hot Water Heaters would be great as there seems a lot of voodoo around them.
Excellent. Many thanks for this. I thought I was going mad with mine.
a quick question! how did people make ice in the past before refrigeration and how did they move and make it in the summer months?
Top notch explanation and with field example 👏
But... The condenser is not condensing without the fan.. you are feeding hot gas into the txv.. how are you testing to TXV when you are creating a fault for the TXV to not work properly?
Brilliant, simply brilliant. 👏 Does blocking the intake or discharge air produce a similar result without removing live wiring and potentially shorting out something, like my lifespan?
I like him😅
Thts a way to burn the fan 50 percent voltage disconnect the cap. Safer too
Disconnecting the common leg from the fan will not cause any damage to the motor. This is exactly how single pole contactors work.
my customer complains that unit shuts off, stays off 15 minutes then comes on for 2 minutes and off again. Is this a cycle rate problem.I like that the unit stays off 15 minuted.
If the unit only runs for two minutes every 15 minutes, that is four starts per hour and only 8 minutes of run time per hour. I think there is probably more to the story.
Well done Thank you for your sharing
You're Welcome
Great video. Thanks
Glad you liked it!
