What's the Annual Cost of Owning and Operating My Airplane - Is It Worth It?
In this video I go over all the costs involved in acquiring, maintaining and operating my airplane for a year, and what you might need to look into if you are considering buying an airplane of your own. I wonder if there’s some difference for what you want out of ownership and also how much more often you CAN actually fly with your own airplane. My goal when I earned my PPL was to fly a minimum of twice a month, but what I’ve quickly found is that I manage more like once a month at best because if weather or maintenance cancels my scheduled rental I have to book another week out. Both airports I rent from are 45 minutes away so flying has to be a planned day, not an impulse. Sometimes I get lucky and can get a plane on short notice on a nice day where I actually have time, but overall I’m not flying nearly as much as I want. I have no interest in super capable cross country machines, I fly for the sheer feel and love of it, so I’m seriously considering getting an old taildragger for under 30k. I could base that at the field 5 minutes from my house and with that kind of access I would probably fly multiple times a week because I could just hop in the plane and hit the circuit (mastering a tailwheel seems to be a lifelong pursuit) or fly down the beach. I could go up on work days to de-stress. That’s the dream for me. I think it should be possible to keep annual costs to own and fly a plane like that under 10k a year.

And you should interface with Public Affairs in Toronto to set that up. And, then get that machine of yours into a wind tunnel. You know what I think. Burble. I think you detected it. I think a cowling mod will remove it. I hope you aren't avoiding Trenton because you think you MIGHT have a fleet wide correctable burble issue, that can be fixed. That would widen safety margins. That would be group think in the wrong direction. I think you had another issue, but you would not have detected the burble without that issue in place. The design is sound. There is only one way to find out. And, finding out on someone else's dime is a good way to do it. They will get value also... As will the Canard Community.

    Very well thought out explanation regarding cost vs hours/yr flown, and even that insurance thing. I've been contemplating the idea of purchasing my own, but for the limited VFR opportunities we have here in NE Ohio, and that I would likely NOT be taking long trips, renting seems to be my best option for the flying I would likely be doing - just getting up to 3-4-thousand feet every so often for sightseeing, $150 hamburger flights, or otherwise mindlessly boring holes in the sky.

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard วันที่ผ่านมา

      I agree, for that type of flying, renting would definitely make more financial sense. Of course, you could go get your IFR ticket and fly some long-distance cross-country trips, which makes it a very different prospect!

    Very thorough explanation of airplane ownership. Your messaging on engine value vs TBO I think left the impression that engines at TBO need to be overhauled. An aircraft engine does not necessarily need to be overhauled at TBO. So just because an engine is 200 hours short of “TBO” does not necessarily mean that you can’t fly it significantly beyond 200 hours and enjoy the value of those “extra” hours. A common misconception I run across is that an engine must be overhauled at TBO, which is not at all true for any aircraft not being flown commercially. I wish more pilots understood this. Of course, this very much depends on the measurable actual condition of the engine, how well the engine has been treated, maintained, and documented. Nevertheless, a new aircraft owner can still enjoy significant value and economy from a near TBO engine.

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard วันที่ผ่านมา

      I think I mentioned that actually, I said something along the lines that once it reaches TBO you can start having to think about overhauls - it's not a set number, and actually, with the way a lot of planes sit these days, I suspect many aren't even making it to TBO before their compression goes and they need at least a top overhaul.

    I don't know. Having to rely on heat from the exhaust manifold seems iffy and just waiting for carbon monoxide to eventually show up. I'm surprised that that installing something as simple as a ceramic heated hasn't been designed or used yet? Must be away?

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's how general aviation aircraft have generated cabin heat for over half a century now, it's pretty much the accepted standard method. Ceramic heaters require an enormous amount of electrical energy - far more than small aircraft generate. Adding the capability to generate that kind of power adds considerable weight, and reduces the overall output of the engine significantly. Whereas taking waste heat energy from the exhaust pipes is simple, lightweight, and requires no extra power from the engine.

    • @tonybenjamin7844

      @@CanardBoulevard Hi Scott, I appreciate that but the next aircraft accident attributed to CO poisoning won't be the first or the last. It just seems archaic in our "modern" day and age. Surely it can't be that difficult to run a heater on 14v DC? Were are the smart electrical engineers that could figure this out :)

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@tonybenjamin7844 It's not a question about being smart or not, it's a question of physics. Yes, you can run a heater on 14V, but you need WATTS - energy. To get the same amount of heat from an electric heater that we get today for free from exhaust shrouds, we would need about 400 to 500 amps at 14 volts. Consider that the typical alternator on a GA airplane is around 80 amps. A 500 amp alternator and the massive wire to carry 500 amps are going to be extremely heavy, and create a ton of heat that needs to be cooled, so additional drag for cooling, plus additional power required because it's sapping so much power from the engine, which means higher fuel burn...it's just not practical, which is why it's not done.

Look this up on TH-cam, there are a lot of sites that test many different Remote ID modules some broadcast about 100' but appear to comply with the regulation. My MavicPro with the Spektrum remote id gives me about 1300'.

    Love the Airplane in the background. Always loved Canards. I’ve always believed they have needed a nice down rated turbine. When I win powerball I’ll call you. Also a longtime Pilot. I have also had numerous UAP experience starting in 1994. We were intercepted by a UAP enroute on a 121 Airline Flight. The WMD belief imho is a great cover story because it’s believable but the news media has all but ignored all of it. Yes the Govt knows what is going on. My personal thought by watching and observing the Ocean Orbs (USO’s) and even 2 bright giant orbs over a City, is the Government is swarming multiple states with drones to hide these UAP/Orbs in plain sight. If they confuse the public with aerial objects people are less likely to understand what is truly going on. Notice the Military is not chasing them or shooting them because these UAP would reveal their true nature. So the Govt is ignoring them and instructing the media to ignore them too. As soon as they go away the drones will cease and Govt will declare it over but classified. If it really was WMD we would see States mobilizing ground teams to intercept these WMD. We see none of that. It’s all a big giant lie to conceal UAP’s so nobody notices. That’s my most current opinion. I have had 6+ encounters with craft and 15 foot orbs and verifiable footage of dimensional portals. On IG check out Christopher Lentz Bledsoe. Cheers. Merry Christmas to you and Yours 🫶🙏

      "manned drones" - also known as EVTOLs, are aircraft, and are required (like other aircraft) to have ADS-B out capability. They will show up on ADS-B Exchange, FlightRadar and any ADS-B equipped aircraft with the capability to display TIS-B traffic.

    24:15 you talked about holding the nose up after touchdown a couple of months ago & we have seen you do one or two. You're probably only practising this when you've got the right runway and good weather. (Minimal crosswind). Do you still have reasonable rudder authority during that hold off? Not that it's a major consideration but that landing looks much smoother from our video viewpoint! With a camera fixed to the air frame it often looks like a bit of a slam down when the nose comes straight down. No doubt it doesn't look or feel like that in the aircraft with your eyes on the horizon.

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      You're right, it looks much more violent on camera than it feels. I'm trying to hold the nose off anytime I have >3000 feet of runway or so, and touch down appropriately. And while the canard is still flying, you have more than enough airspeed for the rudders to remain effective.

    • @alanm8932
      @alanm8932 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@CanardBoulevard on your _usual_ landings, are you pressing both rudder pedals as soon as the nose is down? IIRC this moves both rudders outwards as an air brake. Or is that more for use in the air?

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@alanm8932 As soon as the nose is down I push on both pedals, because that's how the brakes are also activated. You push down on the pedals, the first bit of travel activates the rudders, then the second part of travel activates the brakes. So if you are braking, both rudders are deployed.

    • @CanardBoulevard
      @CanardBoulevard 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      13:1 with the prop stopped, 16:1 with an idling engine, compared to 8:1 or 9:1 for a Cessna with the prop stopped.

    • @alanm8932
      @alanm8932 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @CanardBoulevard that's a very useful improvement over the Cessna. I guess it evens up your chances with the Cessna if you had to put it down somewhere with a dead engine. You'd have a wider radius to search for the better quality field that you'd want to find for your landing speed & undercarriage. Also, the kind of heights you cruise at, probably put you in gliding range of a runway most of the time.

  • @alanm8932

    14:44 *What!* It's bad enough that the top of the blades go way higher than the light but to have no lights at all? I guess the Notam saves a lot of maintenance. These turbines are climbed regularly for other maintenance reasons though, so you'd think maintenance of lights wouldn't add much. It's probably like coastal lighthouses being decommissioned, as it's assumed it's on everyone's GPS.

      You absolutely can, but, within limits: it's still slippery and hard to slow down. I'm coming in low and slow in this video, but I'm also at idle - so even if I were to lose my engine on final, I'm still going to make the runway. I've got enough excess energy that I could still make it.
