You are right about not needing a hard drive. Check the return policy of the retailer you purchased the drive from. Or if it's higher capacity, you may elect to leave it in. You will need to swap the power supplies back and replace the defective one. On the power supply should be the OUTPUT ratings in DC VOLTS and Amps. Make sure the diameter of the barrel connector is the same. If you order from Amazon, make sure the order is fulfilled by Amazon. Returning may be easier.

@jeffanderson9093 I also never knew that there are different "grades" of hard drives, the new one I bought cost a little more but is purple grade and specifically made for surveillance duty which is on and recording 24/7, lesser duty models will fail sooner, I'm also told there is a red grade which is used in servers and is supposed to be even better. I also want to mention I tested the power output of the defective adapter and it measured 12.38v, I also thought if it was some sort a/c diode leakage issue it may show some a/c voltage, which it did not. So if you check with a meter, you will find no difference, only way to spot this problem is to swap the power adapters and check the picture quality!

​@ryanmccormack7576 The power supplies used over the last 20 years are called switching power supplies. Typically, what fails is the output capacitor. When testing, you need to put a load on the power supply. Then measure the DC voltage and AC voltage. You should not see any decrease in DC voltage with a load applied. You should not see any AC voltage with a load. If you do, this means the filter capacitor is not doing it's job.

The cheap hard drive failed this last May. So it lasted 3 years. I tested the DVR with the old hard drive, and it still works. I will be installing a 1TB Samsung SSD. The prossessers cooling fan had failed also. I installed a new cooling fan that required a small modification to attach it.

On the device menu, make sure Overwrite is set to Auto. Once the hard drive is full, it will overwrite the oldest video.

Yea they’ll get you. Like in my car my acm went out (audio control module) they’re asking 800 bucks for a new one and an additional 300 for programming I found one online for 150 bucks

I think the hard drive was purchased from Bestbuy. Apparently, a wide variety of hard drives will work on the Knight owl. See what other people have tried in the replies. Just make sure you can return the hard drive if it does not work.

Ford dealer ships stock the replacement TA-34 canisters. A new replacement number is AG1Z-1568-A. You could check on Amazon or do a shop search "ford TA-34". A good price including shipping is about $41.

There is no way to know for sure if it will work. Could be a chance it could work if there is an option to format the hard under the hard-drive menu. If you do purchase a hard drive, please check out the return policies.

The auto will record over the oldest recording. This is found on the Hard Drive tab. The cameras should be set to record on motion detected. This will reduce the space used on the hard drive. As for how long the video is saved on hard drive depends on how often the camera records video to the hard drive. The best setting is auto for overwrite. This way, you never run out of hard disk space.

It's unlikely all 4 cameras would fail at once. I would check the power supply or the 4-way adapter. Verify the power outlet for the power supply is working. Remove the 4-way adapter and plug in one camera directly into the power supply. Then try the 4-way adapter. Then try one camera at a time. Then try adding one camera at a time. At some point, you will lose your camera picture. If you can't get a picture at all. This is most likely the power supply for the camera. If you don't get a picture only on one of the cameras, then it's likely the camera or the cables going to it are shorting out the power supply. If you are losing the picture when multiple cameras are plugged in, then it's likely the power supply is starting to fail. When it comes to the power cables, the wires to the cameras could have gotten pinched, or a rodent chewed on them.

By rebooting, do you mean you see the DVR power-up title screen? If so, this could be an indication of one of two things. The DVR is having a power supply issue, or the DVR is having issues with the 12 terabyte size of the drive. Now for the power supply issue. This could be caused by 3 issues. First, the replacement hard drive draws more Amps than the old one. Second, the wall power supply may be failing. Third, the electrolytic capacitors may be failing. The capacitors look like small alumnum cans standing up right on the circuit board. They will have a plastic colored sleeve on the outside. If the capacitor is failing, the top will be bulging or cracked open, or fluid will have leaked from the base. Note: When replacing a capacitor, they are polarity sensitive. The stripe on the side marks the negative side of the capacitor. I did replace 2 capacitors on my DVR because they had a bulging top. They also had significant loss in capacitance.

@John Boatman Did the old hard drive quit working? The issue is why the hard quit working may not have been the hard-drive failing. Let's do a simple test. When the hard-drive is first power up, the spindle will spool up, and the heads will do a seek. You can feel the head moving as vibration breafly. If this does not happen, it could be an indication that one of the power supplies is bad. What is the manufacturer and model number of the hard-drive?

@@jeffanderson9093 the old hard drive was a 4 tb. It started clicking and powers down. The drive itself died i confirmed that by sliding it in my dock tray on my pc. The new 16 gig does format just fine as 14.9 gig in my pc. And used chkdsk to confirm nothing wrong with it and passes smartdisk tests.

This can be caused by several reasons. Does the live video from the camera's quit updating on the screen? Or does it only involve video from the hard drive?

@Camla Camp The hard drive could be bad, or the internal power supplies could be failing. Hard drives typically use 5 volt and 12 volt power supplies. This is supplied from the main circuit board. These items are the most likely failure points. If you have an old had drive laying around, you could try it. Remove all power and connections to the Digital Video Recorder before opening it up. Inspect the circuit board for any burnt or visual damage. Next, look for what looks like a small can standing upright on the circuit board. That has a plastic colored sleeve on the outside. This is a capacitor. One way to tell if it is bad is that the metal top will have bulged up, or it looks like something had seeped from the bottom. In this case, the capacitor has failed and will need to be replaced. At this point, you should have someone who's has electronics skills help you out.

First thing go into the menu where the hard drive is listed. Check to see if it is listed. If not listed, the hard drive may have failed, or it has lost the 12 volt supply to it. If equipped, the cooling fan typically runs on 12 volts. This should be ruining. Next, check to see if the box on the screen is checked that allows the oldest information on the hard drive to over written.

The hard drive has two areas that data is stored. The smaller section is partitioned. The large section where the video is not partitioned or a not common type of partitioning method. To read this may require data recovery software. Basically, it would be difficult to read.

If the dvr has a flash drive USB port you can copy to that for viewing on laptop.

A spare tire adds weight and cost. It will also reduce fuel economy. Plus the trunk well may ocomodate a full size tire.

@@jeffanderson9093 i have a GT and it has a spare tire compartment if you really believe that BS you said about weight and fuel etc you will fall for anything they did it to save them money even the tech at the dealer said it he also told me use AAA never use that kit

@@TheTae310 I have full size spare tire. It weighed 48 pounds. Then add a car jack to this number. The car manufacturer shaved 50 pounds out of the car. The tire inflater will be far cheaper then the tire and jack. Also if car owner gets Injured while attempting to change a tire. They may sue the manufacture.

@@TheTae310 Only about 10% of the vehicles have a full size spare. 60% have temporary spare tire. 30% have no spare tie whatsoever. This information is from consumer reports.

The for the app to work the night owl needs internet connectivity. Verify that the night owl is properly connected to the internet.

Try a new, and I mean new, back up battery ☺️ 3 volts, anything less than 2.5 volts is no good.

In the settings you should find a check box, that enables the oldest information to be written over, once the drive is full.

If you can't play back video, then your unit likely has a bad hard-drive. The nice thing about buying from Costco is they often double the manufactures warranty. A warranty repair is always cheaper then replacing things. Be aware hard-drives often need two voltages supplied from the main circuit board. 5 volt and 12 volt. If a power supply is bad it will be the 12 volt, and not cause other problems. Try a used hard drive if have one available. If you are purchasing a hard drive, check thier return policy.

@@jeffanderson9093 this is so bad we all got ripped off and here you are trying to make it better give a solution for spending hundreds of dollars for something that runs out of space by dumb.

Did the old hard-drive fail? Is this a new hard drive. What is the manufacture and model number if so. And yes it's not always the hard drive. Harddrives will make some very mild vibration or noise when first powered up. This is the player spinning up and the heads moving inside. If the noise is easily heard, or the heads repeatedly are shaking. This could be an indication of something wrong.

If the camera's power supply is separate from the DVR it could be going bad. Unplug the power supply going to all but one of the camera's. Did the picture quality improve? This would be an indication of a failing power supply. Can you play back old video before this problem appeared? Are you still getting partial video images from the camera's?

@@mrkylebloom I'm glad it did fixed the problem with video quality issue. As for the software version, I have no ideal as to version. The first number usually indicates a major change. The last digits would be for small things like bug fixes, and minor changes. The manufacture some times under Support on the website may list the versions.

Unplug the hard-drive, and see if the problem resolves it self. If it does this could be an indication of a power supply issue. It could be the new hard drive is drawing to much current (amps), or a power supply issue. Their is the power adapter that plugs into the wall. This converts the AC power coming out of the wall to low voltage DC. typically about 12 to 24 volt. Some times these go bad or degrade over time. The power supply that power the cameras is typically 24 volts. If the Voltage rating on the back is 24 volts or more, you then can temporarily use camera power supply to to test powering up the night owl. The circuit board inside the night owl you will find capacitors. They look like small cans, with a plastic colored rapper and strip going down the side. On top you can see the bare aluminum exposed. If the top is split open or bulging, the capacitor is going bad or is bad. They should be replaced.
