Transforming Lawn to Pollinator Garden: Establishing Native Prairie
We have spent the last 2 years transforming our lifeless septic leach field into a native prairie that is now home to many pollinators and animals. This lawn alternative is beautiful, functional, and very low maintenance. In this video we show you what we planted over the septic leach field, the process of eliminating the previously planted cover crop, and some of the more-than-welcome local critters that now roam here. In the next video of this series, we will discuss what you should and should not plant on a septic field.

Although we are homesteaders on youtube, we want to start out first by saying that we are by no means experts in the homesteading lifestyle. We still consider ourselves to be brand new, starting our family homestead from scratch. Two years ago we moved into this 100+ year old farmhouse with a little less than 4 acres of land, a couple barns, and a whole lot of potential. After being inspired by other homesteading channels, we decided to start our own to document our journey as a homesteading family.
We hope you enjoy and join us for the journey. If you choose to subscribe, don’t forget to hit the bell notification as well so you don’t miss out on future videos.

What type of seeds did you use? I have loblolly pine on my acreage would I have to treat the soil first for the correct PH ?
Im in the exact same boat just moved onto a property and it looks just like that, but i do have a tractor
some seeds do need winter cold stratification and germinate better when planted in fall. So basically when is the ideal time to sow also depends on the germination needs of the plant in question.
Good job, but one of nature's tools is fire. Humans have spent too mich time and energy suppressing nature insead of using it with good judgement.
Well done keep up the hard work. You are doing so well!
Very helpful, thank you
Thank you so much. Very informative
Wonderful
Well cone. Great tutorial thank you
Which perennial grasses did you use? Thank you.
You are SO enthusiastic!! i love it
Low effeminate energy. Mo energy and be more of a man.
Old man's cracking me up! "Anything good cost blood", hahaha...
Those saplings would make a great woven fence. Cut the thickest to post length and the rest weave back and forth thru those posts. A little shrub growth and new tree saplings and you have a living hedgerow.
I'm in Indiana and this EXACTLY what we want to do to our farm! Fantastic video and your meadow looks incredible. Good job

Nicely done video, and outtakes too!
This video healed my soul a bit. Thank you for the sights and sounds
Well done.
Why do yanks never pronounce the “h” in herb? Completely illogical
Did you just do a spreader for the seeds? Did you WAY overseed as well since you could not use a No-Till Drill? Please answer these extremely important questions
Need that " east coast florida wildflower mix. God it's got grasses flowers and small herbs. Don't put it in your flower beds.
I read the article on disadvantages to green roofs. I just want to leave two points. As far as homes in the States, make sure you have engineered for the additional weight and that the contractor knows how to correctly build a flat roof. P.S. They aren't actually flat. The last point is more and more insurance companies are doing drone surveys and cancelling your homeowners policy if they don't like what they see. So we as a community of green citizens need to make sure we are supporting legislation that keeps this from happening.
Дорого получилось, особенно лопастное колесо, а двигатель можно от старой косилки одолжить.
Интересная работа. Корпус улитки можно было из жидкого пластика отлить по вашей двойной форме.
@6:25 solar energy?!?!). Forget about that.... you can have a wind farm 🙃
I would never recommend this brand. Now, all of the bolts that hold the engine to the flywheel housing have COMPLETELY back out. 18HP works great when running Before buying this brand I would recommend all interested to try and contact the manufacturer/distributor... Oh yeah, there's a contact number allright but it's just a loop back to the beginning (Canada). If you like you can email them but there is a charge for someone to answer your questions. To sum it up: the fuel tank mounting flanges tore away from the tank - had to weld that; Fuel tank to engine mounting bosses, one bolt snapped off, and 2 of them tore the threads out of the aluminum body - couldn't reuse the mounting bosses so I hade too remotely mount the fuel tank;; muffler cracked and fell off - welded that; sharpening blades by DISASSEMBLING the entire feed area; fuel tank developed a pin hole leak on the top of the tank - fixed with aluminum tape; and now the engine has separated from the body.. Mind you this was new in the summer of 2020 and has roughly 40 hours on it. I don't cuss but the thing is a POS!
He definitely skipped soke stuff lol
Im sorry but i have to say that this will leak most def around the drainage. Please don't follow this guide they obviously dont know much but trying tho.
@indyhomestead what was the specific seed mix you purchased from Heartland?
Thank you so much. I have been looking to see how other people created a meadow over the leach field.
Lovely video. I started my prairie over a decade ago. It's approximately an acre. In the beginning, I didn't do enough research and basically just let part of my yard grow, then burning it each year and adding more and more native plant seeds. I wish I could go back, but it's actually not too bad considering the rough start. It is deeply satisfying to watch the progress and see so many native pollinators, especially since I keep non-native honeybees. My original intent was to support the natives since honeybee pressure would be thick. To my delight, I do see more native wildlife in the prairie than my own honeybees. My guess is the honeybees tend to forage large swaths of pollen and nectar rich crops. So I feel that I have created some sort of balance in a roundabout way. Best of luck on your homestead. I'm glad I found your channel.
What state is this in?
We are located in Indiana!
@@IndyHomestead nice, was curious because I’m moving there this year! God bless.
Such awesome information, thank you for sharing. Im an Ohioian with a dream and this gives me such hope!
I’m launching conservative efforts on my grandparents 30 acres of land, starting with a 3 acre field, continuing into wooded efforts, and ideally getting neighbors on board with the idea, and expanding into a very large nature reserve.
So how do you maintain this area after this point? It seemed too tall to mow. (I understand leaving the stalks and seed heads for wildlife)
Probably prescribed burning
Amazing music;)
Just beautiful. What patience you have!
Love your stuff kick on love it 👍 ❤
I get it. I've been doing this on my Costa Rica farm for 7 years, now. It's made a huge impact. But, there is significant rainfall there. Here in North Georgia and the southeast in general, severe drought is becoming the norm.
Humidity levels through the year is what determines growth, not rainfall. In brittle environments where humidity is low most of the year (desert), grazing animals are vastly more important to break down plant matter. Get animals back on the land!
@@WellGrazed 1500 feet of fence going in for a few and a goat 🐑
Where did you get the impeller?
Not sure of the older guy is family or not bc i skipped around but if it's family or friends, time well spent and im sure great memory
It is Father and Son (mentioned in the intro😊). Time well spent indeed. I enjoy all of the Mother & Son building/diy/repair projects my Son and I find to do💖
Nature's way was trees. Man cleaned it so the pasture could be there. ( at least here in the NE. Man is the solution. Not the problem. Unless you're bill gates and BlackRock great advise though I will try it.
Would this be able to suck up leaves if it wasn’t attached to the lawnmower? I don’t have a ride on mower and have been thinking of building one like this and attaching to my trailer to suck up piles of leaves.
Just curious even though this video is 2 years old. Harbor freight has a similar model for $399 too. Is this pretty much the same chassis in a different brand or an improved model? Northern tool charges $200 just to ship this to CA and my harbor freight is just down the street. I've seen folk change the wheels and tires to a more highway compatible one.
Great video
Fire... all the native Prarie plants evolved with fire.
hi mr indy/ what is the name of grass seed
Making things so difficult ! Been farming....pasturing cattle for 45 years.....milk cows. Mother nature will paint the world green !!!!!! Heavy equipment ....cattle are heavy too ! Cut and bale hay from your pasture yearly ! You can buy a full line of basic hay equipment for around 15000 dollars. Most people own a vehicle that costs more then that ! Fertilize with a 60 -80-80 fertilizer and you will be amazed at the quality and amount of grass ! Forget this so called regenerative thingy ! Feed the cattle !
I don't think your solution is practical for 2 acres. They might be able to buy 2 more acres for $15k, tho.
Wonderful growth
