Pentax 17: Overview Training
When I was getting into photography and Pentax in general, I loved watching overview videos that details the controls of the camera. I felt that this helped train and orientate myself to the camera before I even bought it. Every tip is extremely useful, especially with film photography! Here is our take with a Pentax 17 overview training video:

The written distances in zone focusing are the depth of field with maximum f/3.5 aperture. With daylight and fast ISO film the aperture will be automatically smaller and the depth of field much deeper. In other words with daylight, ISO 400 film the aperture will be around f/8 and f/11. So the lens will be sharper and everything in focus beyond 2mm with far distance zone.
This was so helpful! Thanks!
Thanks!
Great video.
Tutorial how to use pentax z-10
great video.
I have the same Pentax setup /on M42/ and I manage to mount both my digital cameras K7 and K3-II without any problems. As a lens, I use the most HELIOS 58mm. With it, I have almost 100% visibility of the frame. I scan mostly framed slides. They are well positioned in the frame. But I don't think I'll scan films. The compression is not good enough for positioning the film. Especially the older ones are slightly deformed /especially if they are stored on rolls/ and there is no focus on the entire frame. For precise scanning of films I am now preparing a new setup. Hopefully it will work out well.
Do you know if the Spotmatic F will work with the 50mm f1.4 super takumar 8 element version or will it damage the back element? Thank you
Should be fine. It’s only models older than the Spotmatic that really have issues.
@ thank you! Looking forward to trying the combo soon.
I hope you see my comment i just bought this camera how can I use a flash for it because i want to take pictures in the night
You’ll have to use an external flash that supports the X sync cable for the port on the front side of the camera. A ‘cold shoe’ adapter can be purchased to mount the flash on the camera.
@ ty so much 🙏🏼
Excellent, but the Pentax PZ -1 is described as having a mirror lockup feature (50m34s) . According to the forum and the printed manual there is no mirror lockup feature on the PZ-1. Correct me if this is wrong. Where the MZ-S in 2001 had this feature.
Thaaaaaank you!
What about with the electronic shutter? No difference?
An interesting test but it would have helped enormously if, instead of continually moving the comparison images around, each time the movement stops, it could be paused for 5 seconds or so so that we can see the differences (or lack thereof) properly, especially with the difference in the focus point. At one point we're virtually looking at two completely different images, with the K-3 III image hovering over the flower whilst the K-1 image is showing us the green leaf!
Fantastic review . I’m an experienced user of film -50 years. I had forgotten what the slider function was .
Is no one gonna address the focusing issues you are going to have with vintage glass?
You thought you’d get autofocus with a vintage lens? No, there is no issue. You manually focus with the ring on the lens.
How do I focus tho
With the focus ring on the lens.
👍👍👍
Awesome I wanna try it. Is the early 8 element big rear safe to use on LX with its included M42 insert? Adapting to Canon EF do I use w/ fitter M42 to K ring? Best adapter for M42 to EF & F?
i really hate the menu screen of this camera.
That was a very helpful video. You have answered many of my questions about my new Spotmatic. Thank you!!! I have been gently adjusting my shutter speed instead of aperture dial to get the exposure needle in the correct spot. I hope that’s okay?
Yep! All depends if you want to control for motion (shutter speed) or depth of field (aperture)
That was a very helpful video. You have answered all of my questions about my new Spotmatic. Thank you!!!

My favorite camera since I was young, I have also a 40mm, all become pocketable.......I love this Pentax.
I heard that once the focus screen is fixed back it must have a centering between the 3 points for a correct focus, can you confirm this? Thanks I'd to clean mine.
You shouldn’t need to adjust it unless you are removing the screen and replacing it with another
Since you never changed the housing which has the screws in it
@@xactorocker4082 I changed the item and I fixed it as original, no problem to focus. Tks
Great explainer, helped a lot.
Watching this in 2024 - who would've thought that Pentax would release a brand new, half-frame, manual advance film camera?
Nice and simple instruction video. Owning a couple o SMC A-series lenses, the apenture is something I can use alike the more modern lenses. But where do I set the the focal lenght to manually, when using my SMC A 3.5 35-105mm in regard to the most optimal the SR-functionallity? 35mm? 105? Or the average 70mm?
Unfortunately, it’s not so simple. The ‘best’ result will be to constantly change the setting according to the focal length you’re currently using. However, that’s unpractical. It’s been said that choosing the shortest focal length to enter provides acceptable results at all lengths. If you enter the longest length it will only benefit the long lengths but not short lengths.
I need help! I don't setup the left dial with the characteristics of my Kodak portra 400 36poses.
that tiny key-chain black Pentax MX is lovely! but the video talks about it as if it's a real camera! 🙂
Just performed this on my 50-135 with a K-R. So happy it worked! Thanks!
I recently acquired a Pentax MX and your video is a great guide for what is sure to be a fun little camera! However, my film indicator is stuck at 35 shots and the shutter will not dial back. There is no film in the camera. Am I missing something simple here or am I due for a servicing? Thanks a bunch!

Excellent video 😮!
Imagine you get this kind of instruction everytime you buy a camera. Thank you for this excellent tutorial. 👍
I have Ricoh/Pentax binoculars and they are incredible..
That was great, it worked with a slight menu variation on my K5, the clearest setup instructions I have seen, thank you.
Thanks for the video. A couple of points you mentioned don't seem to function the same way on my MX. I have an M mount lens and when I adjust the aperture manually and have the shutter pressed halfway, I don't see the exposure meter updating. It only seems to update with aperture values when I have the depth preview lever pulled. The other thing I noticed is that I can't leave the exposure meter running with the film advance pulled halfway after holding down the shutter button the way you mentioned. The only way to activate the exposure meter seems to be by having the shutter button pressed half way. Curious if there are different versions of the MX where these behaviors are different or could it be a mechanical fault in my camera?
I think there may be a small fault with your camera. The camera and lens have two connectors together. One is the bigger lever that stops down the lens. The other is a smaller little bar used to read out to the light meter the current position of the aperture. I bet the connector on your camera body has bent back a bit and is missing its contact with that little bar. Try bending it back into position. Also, setting the film advance lever to the standoff position will not activate the light meter, but it will keep it on. A half press of the shutter is the only way to turn it on. Then the standoff position can keep it on instead of having to constantly half hold down the shutter
@@PentaxTips Thanks for your response! Can I do all this by just taking the bottom plate off or do I need to take off the hood as well?
Neither. Just by taking off the lens. If you look in the mount there is two couplers. One is on the left (near the release switch; if you toggle the depth of preview switch you can watch it move) and the other is on the right top corner. I bet the one on the right top corner is bent a bit and isn’t making contact with your lens.
Love Pentax, thanks for the video
Thanks for the video - back into Pentax DSLR
我刚刚买了一台Pentax mx, 看了你的视频学到很多知识。非常感谢🙏!
我很高兴你喜欢它们
Super informative video. Thank you. Some literature discusses different focusing screens. For example, as an old-time Pentax user, I like the split image focusing screen. Is it possible to set up the screen for this kind of focusing?
You bet, you have to buy a split-image focus screen separately, but the screen is entirely removable and interchangeable. Similar to this video th-cam.com/video/l5xLU6JDyKk/w-d-xo.html
The Pentax ME is slightly smaller than the MX !
The MX is shorter in height. The ME is shorter in width.
Cool video, thanks
What a beautiful tool. I love dslrs.
Thank you for this wonderful visual history. I love PENTAX cameras. Have been buying several bodies from K100D to K3 Mk II. I have introduced PENTAX to 50-60 people. PENTAX should have worked more aggressively on the Marketing. The HOYA period got the company a lapse. The AF has been an issue up to K3 Mk II.
Fantastic overview video, every new owner will get lots out of this, much clearer than the camera manual. The tip about software to convert the negatives was also appreciated. Thank you :)
