Spiritwynd Wood Stone & Bone
Canada
เข้าร่วมเมื่อ 7 ธ.ค. 2013
Wood crafter by day, Housekeeper by night!
Follow me as I learn how to use a wood lathe! I've only been turning since January of 2021, so I have lots to learn! But I have fallen in love with it, and I know that I'll be doing it for years to come! I hope you join me, to watch my progress!
I have always loved working with wood, be it power carving pendants, learning to chip carve, making Bentwood Rings with stone inlay, or just plain whittling for fun!
I also do Pyrography, that I may incorporate into my woodturning at some point in time.
I also power carve bone pendants, and earings, that are loved by everyone!

Woodturning a Dreidl
มุมมอง 6452 หลายเดือนก่อน
I've been asked many times if I've ever turned a Dreidl, and the answer has always been no, until now! I made these two Dreidls out of a square oak spindle, ( the same ones I make most of my spinning tops from). The game is fairly simple, and the rules can be found by simply googling, "The dreidl game". To make the Dreidl land on its side more, I'd suggest making the body a bit longer than mine...

Beautiful bowl, Heather. I LOVE spalted beech! Happy New Year!
Very nice
Thanks Roger 😊
Beautiful bowl Heather nicely done, Cheers from Will 👍 😊
Thank you, Will!
Gorgeous bowl.
Thank you so much 💓
Nice job Heather 👍
Thanks Dore!
Really nice work Heather. The beech is lovely. The tung oil finish looks to agree with the wood and design well. Excellent!
Thank you Doug 😊
Awesome work
thank you Jay 😊
Love that spalting!! So nice!
Thanks Alan!
Looks nice Heather. Only did tung oil once and it took forever to cure so I might sneak up north and comandeer your sauna (or just use my shop food dehydrator perhaps). Thanks for sharing. Take care. -Mike
Thanks Mike! Food dehydrator should work too!
Ohhh, but please show us the roughing out of the outside of the bowl. Honestly, we could use more of the post-roughing out of any wood turning project. Not to be rude, but the roughing out for me is like pulling teeth. Nice outcome.
I'll try to remember next time Robert 🙄 I just totally forgot about recording it. I need to start making more beaded bowls, so I'll show the roughing out too. Thanks for watching though ❤️
@@spiritwynd Just to be clear, less roughing out the better. Just show us the good stuff. Thanks
Sooo...Just the finished product?🤣🤣
@@spiritwynd Just less showing us of roughing out please. That rates right up there with showing us how to sand. Ugh.
Beautiful bowl, Heather. Great tips too. 😊
Thanks Robert 😊
That's a magnificent job Heather. I'm always a wee bit worried that spalting will go punky after a while - do you think the oil seals it and prevents that? Thanks for sharing and a very happy New Year to you all there and to all your fans.
Thanks Mark! With the dust coming off of this piece I'm sure that the spalting was completely finished, and with the tung oil application, it's completely sealed too. Happy New Year to you and yours ❤️
Nice as always , love the spalting.
Thanks Jim!
Great work
Thank you David
Beautiful piece Heather. Wish Beech was readily available where ilive. It really spalts nicely.
It sure is! They say it spalts even before it starts to die!
Beautiful wood, beautiful bowl. Very nice work Heather! Interesting how the spalding kept to the sides.
It is definitely odd that it was only on the sides. The matching piece that came from the other side of the log was completely spalted. Unfortunately, I didn't get a picture of it before it sold. Thanks for Watching Carsten.
My lathe wobbles so much I should be able to make these without having to reset the wood blank. These look pretty cool.
🤣🤣🤣 maybe you should bolt that lathe down! 😆
Looking good. Nice skew work. 😊
Thank you Sue!
you could put a screw in between the chuck jaws to stop any spin.
I've had a whole pint of green stain that I've had very little use for. Hmm.
Thank you so very much for replying yes it help a bit thank you. Nathan
Začátek videa ukazuje jiný kus polotovaru. Co se stalo že došlo k výměně za nový kus?
Hi Josef! I just rewatched this video, ( it was 2 years ago), and I didn't switch pieces of wood at all during the video. I did make a matching candlestick, but none of that was recorded. I wouldn't suggest making an off center OAK candlestick like this to a newbie woodturner, like I was at the time, as I came close to getting catches that could have been bad! Thanks for watching Heather 🇨🇦
It looks really. Good I like it and I will give it a go. Can I ask for all the merments so I can give it a go? Thank you. You make it look so easy I an only a new be to wood turning.
Thank you Nathan! I've already sold this ornament, so I can't really give you measurements, but, if you start with a square spindle, mark the exact center of all 4 sides,(down the length), then measure 3-4" from the tailstock, Mark all 4 sides. You can then drill through,(4 sides) to just past center, or completely through to the other side,(2 times). I used a 2" wide spindle and drilled a 1.75" hole. But you could go less. Your "window" will just be smaller. Then you just turn between centers. Hope this helps. Heather 🇨🇦
Nice project, Heather.. Thanks
Thanks Ward!
No wonder these cuties fly off your craft table !! Keep 'em coming. Take care. -Mike
Thanks Mike! People definitely love them!

So adorable Heather. Very nice job. 😊😊😊
Thanks Robert 😊
Lovely ornaments, thanks for sharing Take care Cheers Harold
Thanks Harold! They are really easy
Wieder mal sehr schön geworden. Tolle Arbeit. Danke für das Video. Liebe Grüße aus meiner Meenzer Bastel Bude YT Germany. Stefan.
Thank you Stephan! I'm wondering what you do in your Meenzer craft booth? Heather 🇨🇦
Those are cute, Heather!
Thanks Billy 😊 🐁
Using an awl to mark the ear drill spot will keep the bit brim wandering when you drill. Nice mice and hedge hog!
Thanks Valerie! I'll try to keep that in mind. No promises though! Lol
Clever and cute
Thank you Jim!
cutee
Thanks Mike!
First!
Yes you are! Thank you so much for watching 👀 ❤️
Hi Lady, that was just amazing ,thank you so much 💓 xxx
Thank you Glenn!😀
How did you glue the tree in, wood glue, hot glue, instant glue? Really nice ornament.
I used Tightbond Quick and Thick glue, it works great!
Thank you so much, I will use that.
Nice.
Neat! Maybe use bloodwood so that they look more like real shells? 🤔
Great idea!
Just a tip, but pouring a little acetone or alcohol on the double-stick tape dissolves the adhesive, making it much easier to take apart.
Thank you so much for the tip! I will definitely try that!
Bloodwood or padauk might be a good choice.
Yes they would! But I don't have any, so, I use what I have Heather 🇨🇦
Rather a nice lasagna, and not have someone messing with my lathe. But it looks good
Turned out nice!
Thanks 😊
Trashy
Very beautiful bowl. Love the color on the rim. I agree, paint it first then cut in the bowl. I do wide rim bowls with Jo Sonja iridescent paints over black paint. I use flat black and I spray paint it running around 4-500rpm. If you spray at the right angle you don’t get over spray on the back. I paint the rim then cut the bowl. flat black is cheap and you can apply it in seconds and it dries fast. Great video. I’m going through quite a few of yours now. Enjoying the ride. Take care, Scott
Thank you so much for the ideas on how to paint the rim of the bowl Scott! I'm going to make another one of these soon! And thank you so much for watching my videos! They definitely aren't the greatest, (I've only been turning for a few years), and I know there are better videos for learning, but they help me see my progress as a turner! Heather 🇨🇦
Really nice !
Thank you Brian!
Would be a great scratch awl
It would!
I go skew when I get it round out
It gives a great finish that you hardly have to sand!
Great idea, but I would probably use a larger eye screw and two part epoxy instead of the thread lock.
Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definitely try that.
That is badass! I too have done indexed turnings with home made jigs. I have not tried the basketweave pattern though. It is beautiful though and I might have to try it now. I had to make an indexing wheel myself to fit between the chuck and spindle since I don’t own a chuck with index holes. I could have used the lathe indexer but it wasn’t divided into enough sections. I built a jig with a small trim router much like you did with the pencil holder which you could slide left and right against a stop block on the ways and cut grooves radially. Making the stop block perpendicular to the axis of rotation gave you a consistent depth of groove, angling the stop block would allow you to cut a tapered groove that had a pretty stunning effect . You can adjust the height to cut on the center line or above or below. I even added a hinge on it so I could make arcs on the rim. Very cool outcomes. I was thinking you could do the same thing with your pyro tool and skip the pencil marking and go right to the burning of the radial lines. The lines would be very straight that way also and reduce the time I think required. Just a thought. I can’t remember the name of the turner who inspired me to do these turnings but you could probably find him somewhere. He was using a manufactured router jig and indexer. Might have been Jimmy Clewes. I couldn’t justify buying one. Was expensive. Wasn’t in my budget. Was cheap to build my own. The router easily cuts the grooves and it goes pretty quick. The burner might also be quick this way. Anyway, really nice project with a stunning effect here! Take care, Scott
Thanks for all the ideas Scott! I've seen the videos of using a router jig too, but can't find it now, I'm sure it's still out there somewhere. I don't mind having to burn the lines separately, because it gives it a more "hand woven" look, not so machine made. ( but yes, it would be faster). I also made an indexing wheel, for more sections that aren't multiples of 12. I never thought about marking tapered lines before! I may just have to give it a try! And I'm also too cheep to buy something that I can make, but, sometimes the time it takes to make something is more than the cost of buying it. Thanks for watching ❤️
