Do you have a video going over your setup? 🤩
Not yet, but I’m working on one!
That's a watt per week. Thays reasonable
Now if I could only do that every week of the year!
Thanks for this video. I am going with a new desktop or laptop as my old desktop and laptop are done
Makes a big difference in terms of trainer enjoyment- for me anyway. Doesn’t make me any faster unfortunately!
@TBBCycling same but it will help have glacial improvements
Nice video, trying to get fit here and im only at 1w/KG atm a LONG way to go.
Thanks Adam - good luck! Have fun with it - I'll admit this training plan got pretty boring towards the end, but jumping in some group rides really boosted the motivation again.
How funny to see how FTP change from person to person. I am 192cm with 110kgs (14% fat), my FTP is 272W and I wouldn't be able to follow you at all. 😅😅 I also have a 12 week plan now to improve, let's see how it goes.
Thanks very informative. Just started a structured ftp workout plan on zwift.
Nice - let us know how you make out!
thanks for sharing. So you have to follow day by day or did you schedule shifted some workouts?looking at the time schedule, christimas is coming and i might be off of the bike for some days... BTW, i did a 2 week VO2 max workout plan and got a 4% increase in FTP. i found not so hard but with a very fast paid off, even an upgrade to Cat B :P
Thanks man - you don't have to follow the workouts as they're scheduled, you can shift them around a bit. There were days that I was supposed to do long workouts, but didn't have time, so did one of the shorter ones instead. That being said - they're arranged by week and build on eachother, so it's best to try to stick to the weekly schedules as much as possible I think. Congrats on the gains and good luck with the B's!
That's a fair increase. I found the plan not ambitious enough with regard to the overall loading. But it does get a result so can't fault it from that respect. I did this along time ago when just starting out like yourself, but, like this year, when getting back into fitness I don't so much look at the ftp number, although in the last 8 weeks I have had almost the same numbers and uplift as yourself from that respect. Initially I focused on the zone 2 stuff, just plodding around, and a couple of fartek rides or zwift races per week, like you just getting dropped and riding at the back solo for a few weeks. What I tried to do here was ride either really easy Z1/Z2 or hard and stay out of sweet spot. Once I was happy with the zone 2 work started being more structured with threshold interval session trying to progress the endurance aspect and Time To Exhaustion. For VO2, I would race a couple of times a week, but think carefully of what I was getting out of the race, which can be route specific. You will push yourself harder in a race than an interval training session, you know you are gonna have a 3 min full gas start, a reasonable first 10 min effort then some sort of climb vo2 effort. I don't worry about positioning doing this, I just drop back to the next group once I have reached an effort goal, sit and rest up in the pack until I get to the next part of the course to the work I want to do. The results from having a flexible approach that it is really enjoyable, might not be as good as a dedicated coached training plan, but you can have so much more fun with it on the platform that will keep you more engaged for longer. Be careful not to have too much fun though especially if you do races for a win, and remember you do have to rest to improve.

Nice bike, would be interested to see a bike check video, what is the frame size? And what is your height if you don't mind.
Thanks Willy - Good idea on the bike check video. The frame is a 54cm and I’m about 5’8” - I definitely wouldn’t want to go any larger than a 54, but I could probably easily ride a 52 and be comfortable on it as well.
@@TBBCycling Thanks for sharing, for a 5'8, 61kg is pretty light.
@@willyturing1803 Yep - I've certainly never been described as heavy!
My first race! Great video and pleasure riding with you!
Thanks Richie - great racing with you and congrats on your first race!!
Tim, great video! That was my first race and wow it was indeed fast. I was in it right up to the point you put that dig in before the bridge, I couldn’t quite grab a wheel and like you ended up spectating the pack sprinting at the end. I thought Bill was going to take it as well. Great race and already looking forward to next year!
Thanks Jason - great racing with you as well and well done, especially for your first race!!
Great video and commentary as usual Tim! Excellent racing as well!!
Thanks Bill - super strong move at the end - I thought you had it!!
Dude where's the invite, I would have came through
Sorry man - my fault!! Next year def - it’s a much different atmosphere than the crits and was actually way more race-y than I expected this year. Your tactical skills would definitely have helped me!
Nice job Tim!
Thanks Chris!
Trainer roads plans are 10000x better! Jumped insane numbers check it out!
I probably will check them out at some point. This was the first time I had ever done a structured training plan, so really didn’t know if I was even going to stick with it, so didn’t really want to shell out any extra money (other than the Zwift fee, which I was already paying for obviously). What makes the TR plans are so much better btw - have you tried both? I’ve heard from others that TR plans are better as well, just not sure why.
Did you still do any group/outsoor rides for the duration of the plan?
I did this in the middle of winter, so didn't do really any group rides during the plan. The first few weeks were light enough that I did do a Zwift race or two every week, but that stopped after the first few weeks as the load got larger.
Hey, I was in the black and red kit you were on my wheel for a bit, thanks for the footage! There is another crit in Conshohocken this weekend if you’re interested!
Thanks for the heads up on the Conshy race - it wasn't on my radar at all actually. I'll be away next weekend, but will definitely keep on the lookout for it next year. Good riding with you!
You and red helmet were really pulling your group along. It's cool to follow the progression your making in racing.
Thanks Kishumaru - we'll see you there next year!
That was me on the flat with a white helmet black jersey and black bibs. Somebody cross my front wheel. I still finish in 10th with the two fractured bones.
Sorry you went down man - I gotta say I was more than a little surprised to come upon a crash at that point! Amazing work jumping back in while injured and nice finish!!
Yooo that was me in green at the end. Fun racing with you!
Nice racing with you!
Great job Tim!
Thanks Chris - nice prime in your race!
That hill scares me!! It’s like a solid 11-12 min climb and for us heavier riders… no fun. Well done Tim in Cat B!!
Thanks Chris - I kept waiting to turn, but it never happened, just kept going!!!
Did you say you were sixty something KG? That’s insane. I’m kind of slim, not skinny and I’m 86kg. 6”1 I’m targeting 80kg but don’t think I can go lower.
Yep - about 62kg. I'm only just barely 5'8" though - that extra height makes a big difference.
Thank you for the video, I feel am progressing and on on week 10😅
Nice - keep at it! Those last couple of weeks are tough. Let us know how you make out!
Have you also tried riding a race to see if you could get a higher x minutes peak power from that? The race category I was assigned to seems very strength focused and I often find myself pushing through a bit more which leads to higher ftp, of course it could be my psychology holding me back, since I'm not hitting noodle legs in either scenario.....
Yep - I didn’t quite have the extra data to mention this in the video, but now that I’ve done a few more races I can say that I’m pretty consistently about 0.2-0.3 w/kg above where I was at the end of last year (before I did the training plan) for most of the peak x minutes peak power. It’s nice to see this obviously since real world speed is what we’re all after!!
@@TBBCycling Nice! I would kill for such an improvement!
What mount are you using or what camera are you using? Most ppl are going to Hummelstown, July 13 its near Hershey... (take the fam there afterwards lol)
It's the Insta360 x4 - super cool 360 camera! I'm still figuring out the best mounting setup for races - right now I've just stuck a super clamp to the bars with a selfie stick - definitely wouldn't fly in a crit! I'll be away for Hummelstown unfortunately, but should be a good one hopefully!
Hey, a bit context: I started cycling in May 2023 and Zwifting in November 2023. From Jan 2024 onwards I did this plan. I was assigned an FTP of 185 in the beginning and 226 in the end. Have to admit though I was pretty clueless in the beginning, so 185 was probably underestimating a bit and likewise 226 overestimating a bit because I was ridiculously motivated when taking the test. Manually reduced my FTP to 210 in Zwift and now in week 11/12 of taking the plan again. Curious what the FTP test next week will look like.
Thanks for letting us know - I'm super curious about the repeat results as well - keep us posted!
Nice job Tim, congrats on finishing your first Crit!!! I think neutral laps are not really what they say... Whenever I've had one, it is a race to stay as close to the pace car as possible and as soon as it starts to move away every one just goes. I don't like them at all. Way to hang tough, you've got a great attitude and you doing better each race. Chris
Thanks Chris - I definitely had the wrong idea about the neutral lap and was caught off guard! Great race overall though - the course was ideal!
226W is 3.6w/kg? So you're 138lbs? Damn man, I haven't been 138lbs since I was 12. I would have to do 360 watts to be at 3.6w/kg. 226w is my sweet spot power. Good job on the increase, 3.9w/kg is very good for a non pro.
Yep - I probably average a couple pounds less now - I'm only 5'8" so I'm sure there are many larger 12 year olds!
@@TBBCycling I'd be jealous of your weight if I lived anywhere mountains were abundant, but I live in Florida, so it's very flat. Moving to the mountains in Tenn in a few years though, so maybe I'll have to shed some weight to make it easier on myself.
@@shepshape2585 Good luck in the mountains!
I was looking forward to going to spectate and I went and missed it live. Oh well, there's always next year!
It was quite an event - we’ll see you there next year!
@@TBBCycling For sure, and good luck at your next event!
nods in mountain bike :P
Although maybe in gravel if you watched Dylan Johnson’s latest video!
A shame you didn’t get a chance to get in there and mix it up at the front. A great learning experience and guessing next time you nail it and take a lap. Like you said just too amped up and ready to go to think about “what you should do”. Good experience!!
Thanks Chris! Yep - live and learn and next time I'll be prepared.
I was talking to my team about this race, we (cat 4/5), need to work more as a team when broken from the peloton. My teammate and I were close but it was just two of us trying to chase 40 riders.
@@northeast.beast1 Agreed man - the peloton took off like a rocket. Even if we could have caught back on I would've used all my matches. I also found it hard to rotate as a small chase group because of all the corners, but that could just be my inexperience.
Hey Tim, bummer! Just so you know, the rule is pretty clear - you must be involved in the crash (i.e., hit the ground, suffer a mechanical from someone hitting you, etc.) to get a free lap. I've had this conversation with officials several times, if you are "merely" impeded by the crash, you do not qualify for a free lap; you're expected to catch back on. Just to be clear, I'm not suggesting anything controversial, but if you are "involved" in a crash, you should at the least hit the ground :) Better luck next time!
I'll add a little clarification - the rules says it's a referee decision if your being impeded is significant enough to give you a free lap. Meaning you had to go off course, step off you bike or otherwise: "IMPEDED: Riders significantly delayed by a crash that causes a temporary blockage of the road (not a race stoppage) may request a free lap. Riders that have been significantly delayed (having to get off bikes, step over riders, forced detour off course to continue, etc.). may report for a free lap. Riders reporting are subject to the decision of the officials monitoring the course to allow the free lap" I have been denied a free lap in the past :(
Thanks Chris - this is really interesting actually and important for me to know! So this is the wording that I found: IMPEDED: Riders significantly delayed by a crash that causes a temporary blockage of the road (not a race stoppage) may request a free lap. Riders that have been significantly delayed (having to get off bikes, step over riders, forced detour off course to continue, etc.). may report for a free lap. Riders reporting are subject to the decision of the officials monitoring the course to allow the free lap. When provided by the race organizer, riders should report to an area that allows staging for re-entry without interfering with crashed riders or those that need mechanical assistance in the pit. All re-entry into the race shall be under the supervision of the pit official. So it seems like it's up to the race official I guess?? Maybe sort of a gray area? I definitely had to put my foot down and come to a complete stop, so perhaps it was better if I just fell over!
@@TBBCycling it's definitely up to the official if you didn't fall. In my case, I was told that I had to catch up so I just dropped out. Talking to a different official afterwards he said along the lines of "if you go down, there is no judgement, you fell", he smiled, said I didn't tell you to fall and walked away. It's always worth asking, but remember, it will take time to ask and if it's denied, you're even further back. At any rate, sorry it happened to you, I would have continued as you did, even though there was very low probability you were going to catch back on.
It was a fun race regardless of the incident. They really do a great job in Easton. Glad you had a nice race!
That Early and Being a cat 4/5. the officials would have let you back..PLUS. Lean forward and adjust your Break or Bang on Hood Like to put it back in place if you have disc brakes. I am more concerned about your cornering and drafting skills - Thanks for sharing.
Something no one is testing is 32mm in back and 28mm in front. Canyon is however putting 30mm on the back and 28mm up front. They must have a reason.
This is an excellent idea - I could totally see this being the norm at some point in the future.
well, i put 32mm in rear & 28 mm in front for the last 6 months. it feels fabulous. lil bit slower when you start or accelerate (compared to 25 or 28mm), but no difference once you ride 25km/h or faster.. the most important thing about 32mm rear tyre is MUCH MORE comfortable for long ride (i wont go back to 25 or 28mm), especially if you ride 100 km or more.. i stick with 28mm in front because i still want sharp roadbike-riding feeling, its lighter, and its more aero, also cyclist weight distribution is 60-65% on the rear tyre, so i think its ok to put narrower tyre upfront. I apologize for my poor English
@@avinyogi8792 Your english is fine! And thanks for the confirmation!! :)
This comment section is full of guys who love skinny tires. If you like them, ride them. I have 32s on my bike and they're fantastic.
Yep - I’ll happily roll along in comfort knowing that I’m just as fast!
You tested different tires ? It's not a fair comparison. The fact that the bigger tires are lighter means better rolling resistance. Big tires aren't faster unless the roads are terrible.
This isn’t a sponsored video or anything, I was just switching tires and wanted to see which was faster. You’re welcome to send me a set of 32mm GP5k AS to donate to the cause!😄 Everyone keeps saying that thinner tires are faster and I know the theory - they should be, but I have yet to see it happen in anyone’s real life testing (even with the same tire type). Maybe most real life roads are bad enough to make up the difference? Or we’re not going fast enough for the better aerodynamics to matter? Either way, it was a good test for me knowing that the faster tire was still faster for me, even in the wider width.
@@TBBCycling i just told y, the wider tires have better rolling resisitance and you did more power.

Good rip Tim!!
Thank you - and you too!!
Nice job!! I was two people ahead of you so happy to catch a glance of myself at the start. Well done!
Thanks Jack - nice video from you as well - and passing someone, well done! It was a fun race.
I finished this plan this week. I went into the plan with a 237 FTP and in the early stages of the plan hit 245 w for an hour during Zwift Games. I reset my FTP for the plan to match that 245W. The plan then ramped up but I did not see any gains above 245w. I’m sitting around 240w at the moment so I don’t think I can conclusively say that I had any FTP gains from the plan itself. Racing twice a week and z2 the rest of the week seems to be as effective as structured training for me as it took me from 185W to 245W in about 8 months.
Congrats on completing the plan John - it certainly go tough at some points - for me anyways. Sounds like you were a little more structured than me going in - I think part of my gains just came from increased time in the saddle, which sticking to a plan made me do.
WIDER TYRES ARE SLOWER , ITS PROVEN , WHY DOYOU THINK TRACK RACERS ARENT MOVING UP. ITS A SALE PLOY.... IF 30 IS FASTER THAN 23-25 WHY OT 40MM .... MY 28 MM CONTI S TR LAST 4 WEEKS BECAUSE THEY ARE BIG AND LOW PRESSURE. A CON . I,M GLAD I HAVE CADEX 42 TO RUN 25MM TYRES AND I CAN FEEL IT...
Whoa - while I very much appreciate your passion over my equipment choices - there’s no need to shout!! Seriously though - I’m guessing when you say “ITS PROVEN” you mean on a track - I don’t ride/race on a track and the roads around me are far from smooth. The surface being ridden makes a big difference in real world speed. So I will quite happily plod along on my 32’s in comfort knowing that I’m just as fast in most circumstances instead of rattling my teeth out on 19’s. Heck - I may even switch to 35’s at some point when my frame will take them!
Because track racers are riding on a well maintained and super smooth surface that won't be found outdoors...just saying.
Recently in 2023 the UK Track Racing team has been riding on 28mm tubeless tires. So check your « knowledge » maybe?
Very interesting!
You're just wrong. Multiple groups have tested different tire sizes.
Nice results with the zwift training plan. I started similarly doing one earlier in the year and just turned 40 as well. I’m still on the fence about what training plans to use, but I’ve just been doing my own unstructured thing after I started having sciatica issues after doing the FTP ramp test! I wish more of these plans incorporated strength and other aspects. I had been told my core strength was my weak point, but never had any plan for what to do until now. Good luck and maybe 300w ftp will be on your horizon! Gotta have a goals.
Thank you! Good luck with your plan. My thought was that nearly any structured plan was better than nothing. At the very least it would motivate me to stick to a stricter riding schedule, but I actually think it made me a stronger cyclist overall as well. Next off season I may aim to do a more targeted crit specific plan, but this was a good introduction to training plans in general I think. +1 on the core strength! I think mine is also weak and have suffered with lower back pain on/off for the last 10 or so years. A few years ago I started lifting weights more regularly and that definitely helped for a while, but when I put that time into cycling instead my back started acting up again. I think that core strength is a weakness for many cyclists, so if you find a good training plan for that let us all know!
A little pointless testing a slower rolling All Season tyre against a faster 'race' tyre if you are trying to understand width affects.
Perhaps, but only if you blindly believe the marketing - I like to check these things for myself and now I know. There's also maybe not that big of a difference in rolling resistance than you may think. I don't have access to the 'member only' data from Bicycle Rolling Resistance, but at 90psi they measure the AS 28mm CRR=0.0033, which is less than the S 32mm at 44psi of CRR=0.00384. Obviously you'd want to compare similar psi, but the difference may not be as far off as you would expect. A BRR member may be able to let us know.
@@TBBCycling You never ride different width tyres at same pressure for a shitload of reasons. But your pressure difference is way off any reasonable bounds. Under same conditions the correct diff between 28mm and 32mm is less than 20psi. Check Silka tyre pressure calculator. Your measurement is useless.
If you read my comment you know that the only reason I referenced those pressures was because I am not a member at BRR, so I don’t have access to all of their measurements - this was just to show that the rolling resistance difference probably isn’t as large as one would expect. These aren’t my measurements and I certainly wouldn’t recommend riding at those pressures. If you’re a BRR member and have useful measurements please do share.
Nice video. 1 - Hookless are fine, as long as you check compatibilities. 2 - Wider tires are great for cobbles and bumpy roads. For the rest, you need your rims to be wider in order to be aero. Narrow rims + Wider tires is a bad combo.
Thanks man - Most the roads around here I would say certainly would be considered bumpy!
Dude. Data misrepesentation. Your gaph shows a 2/3 decrease - visually. The real dif is 2.7% in time. 2.4% in watts. Not sure how to compare watts to time saved...and these calculators are meant to make yiu buy stuff so i wouldnt trust too much the resut of them ...
Also, do multiple repeats of your tests in bunch of conditio🎉n and look overall ...
This was all just my informal testing, so certainly not a scientific study! You can make your own conclusions, but I’d seriously doubt that the extra 5 watts would make me 37s faster.
Would seriously consider tire inserts especially if those are carbon rims. Just got myself some Ridenow Tubeless Tire Inserts
I’ve never looked into tire inserts actually - what is their purpose?
Inserts are just to ride on a flat tire. Totally unnecessary unless you're a pro riding with a support team.
Cobble sis techniqi. Speed is you friend . Every cobble section has its set speeds, soyou can hop from top to top go slower than that set speed and you find it hard, go faster you will feel the same until you find the other speed.😊 Don’t squeeze the handlebar
Good advice! I plan to test them out today, so I’ll let you know how I make out. I think I’m making a bigger deal than necessary about them - it’s really only .25-ish long.
Did you measure the sealant in both setups?
I did not and I think that’s where some of the extra weight came from - apart from the different types of tires. I started with similar amounts when I originally installed the 28’s about 8 months ago, then added a few mls periodically overtime.
@@TBBCycling Easiest way to solve this would be to weigh the tyres each
I could certainly do that, but tbh they’re already mounted, so I’m not really interested in taking them off again. I’m happy knowing that the new setup is lighter, doesn’t really bother me where that weight saving is coming from specifically.
Not sure what you weigh in at, but just guessing you are significantly less than I am at 94kg/207lb and at a measured tyre width of 30mm it's hard to find a combination of parameters on the Silca pressure calculator which comes in over 73 psi for me. At your weight likely much less. I find 70 psi is perfect. The Zipp (SRAM) calculator comes in at even lower recommended pressures. But given your plan to ride cobbles a wider tyre is a good idea.
Yep - I’m only about 62kg. I’ve never actually used the Zipp tire pressure calculator - looks like they recommend quite a bit less than Silca, which is interesting. I actually think the pressure is probably more important than the width, but that’s a test for another day!
You went slightly faster at slightly harder effort on the big tyres. If you has the same gearing and cadence the big tyre is slighlty heavier/faster geared because it is larger. Myself I also consider tyre size, and went down from 45 to 38 mm this season because i spend a lot more kilometers on asphalt than on gravel. 38 feels perfect on asphalt. Wonder how it is on gravel. Will try today.
Measuring tire height/diameter is something that I didn’t do, so you could certainly be on to something!
