Dubrovnik is an incredible walled city sitting right on the Adriatic. There is so much to do there for families and kids - you can walk the walls, visit the old town, see a couple of forts, go to the beach, and relax on the islands.
It’s been used in lots of movies and series (including Game of Thrones) and is surrounded by cliffs, beautiful beaches and little islands.
You can walk the entire length of the walls around the old city of Dubrovnik. It’s expensive and we hesitated to do it, but we’re so glad we did. You get the best views of both inside and outside the town. I found it much more interesting than being inside the town itself. It takes about two hours to walk all the way around, and we started early to avoid the crowds.
Inside the town there are a couple of main wide streets and then lots of little alleyways. There’s also the old port and a couple of piers. Just outside the walls is another fort which we went up to for views back to the town.
Lokrum Island is a 10min ferry ride away from the old port. It’s stunning and has a Benedictine Monastery, an old hilltop fort, some botanical gardens, beautiful beaches, and peacocks and rabbits. Richard III apparently landed there after being shipwrecked on the way back from the Crusades. Archduke Maximillian of Austria also owned the island for a brief period before he died in Mexico. It really is a world away from Dubrovnik town and is well worth the trip. We spent the whole day there walking and swimming.
