I share my career journey in a story format including why I chose to go this path and how relationships impacted this journey. Remember, I grew up in poverty, in the hood, and was a teen mom.

3 Things I Don't like about being a Physician Assistant

3 Things I Don't like about being a Physician Assistant
I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability with your story. I’m 23 years old, graduated college last year with a bachelors in economics. My major was originally health science but switched due to influence from my peers. I’m doing pre reqs for PA school now and this video has inspired me so much since I also come from a low income/ immigrant family. I thought my life was over after 22 and chose the wrong career but this gave me so much hope.
Does it matter what kind of nursing you do to become a PA?
First time viewer 🤗 We were just talking about this in one of our grad classes. All nursing (undergrad and graduate) are not created the same. That’s why there is a push for standardization. I am flabbergasted by people who report not learning things and completing only papers. I learned so much during each step of my journey from LPN to ADN to BSN and now as a grad student. The knowledge and skills obtained elevated the way I practice and my perspective on the issues. I found that it’s important to really be strategic in your school selection. Unfortunately people choose schools solely based on ease of getting in or how quickly they can finish, just to be done with a job requirement. Blessings on the journeys of everyone in the comments who are following their ordained path. Whatever you choose (NP or PA) we need you! ❤
@naomim5746 thank you for watching! Many people have no idea. I agree with encouraging people to do whats best for their life, but also their patients.
New sub! Thanks for sharing 👍
@@name-vl4jx thank you for watching!
Thank you for sharing! New Sub! RRT to Pre-PA here! Can you talk about more of your overall experience as a PA and the challenges you have faced. I watched your previous videos on this as well. Also your journey to become a MSL. 😊
@KayR418 thank you for watching and I will make a video on that!
Thank you for sharing your journey!
I love this so much this was exactly what I was looking for I’m at the starting point in my career and decided weather or not to be a PA or NP and I was like can I just do both . I’m just like you I want to know all about everyone man ,women ,and child, elderly, psych , ER all so this sound exactly what I want to do ❤
You know, I’m a recluse. I prefer not to interact; but my husband,,,, Man, that’s a different matter. He knows and talks to EVERYBODY. I’ve seen him hook up business deals, personal exchanges, etc. it’s a real talent to be able to do that.
Talk more about ur time during PA school, especially this moment 24:40
@@airparris coming soon! Thank you for watching!
I just got offered a position in occupational medicine. I am a new grad FNP. Do you recommend it?
I think it a a great place to learn a lot. As long as you have ambition and a great onboarding, do it. Ask questions, don't be afraid to look anything up. All the best!
Really enjoyed this video 🙌🏾
Thank you so much for watching!
Awesome. Congratulations on the nomination. I’m so happy to see diversity in healthcare, makes me feel sooo much better about the future of our health.
Thank you so much for watching! We still have a long way to go in diversifying and protecting diversity in healthcare.
Thank you soror 💙🤍💙
Thank you for watching Soror!💙🤍
I am currently working backwards. Finding a PA school I want to attend and made an excel sheet of each school's requirements. I will be graduating from Surg Tech program this Dec and will be logging my hours immediately upon starting my position. I discovered PAs during my clinical rotation as a surg tech student.
Thank you for watching! Best of luck! Be faithful and push.
What were some of the challenges you faced while applying to PA school?
Truthfully, none during the application process. I only applied to one school. However, I did face challenges as a PA student and I will make a video about that soon.
Can you still work as an RN when you become a PA?
Maybe if you wanted to, but I think that would cause confusion.
Are PAs called Doctors?
Sometimes a patient may assume a PA is the doctor and do that but formally no they aren't. Unless you earned a doctorate and choose to go by that title. For example, Dr. Jackie the PA who will be taking care of you
Thank you so much for this video, this gave me clarity. We have similar ideas, I need to stay busy and I love the challenge and want options incase I change my mind. 😊
Thank you for watching and it's worked out for me!
**I just found this video and haven’t had a chance to watch it in it’s entirety, but I plan to later on tonight. So, forgive me if I’m asking a question that you have already addressed in this video.** I am a pain management PA looking to possibly make the transition away from clinical practice after practicing now for almost 12 years. I’ve been recently learning about the MSL career and think I may be a great fit. I’m still learning and just now starting to network to get my feelers out there. Still trying to decide if it is actually right for me. I have a young child (3 years old) so I don’t know if the traveling would work for this season in my life. What are your thoughts on being an MSL with a family…particularly with young child/children?
Such an inspiration. I am currently back on my journey to getting into PA school as a new mom. I just get so discouraged not thinking I'm smart enough but I got this lol
Awwww, thank you! You really can do it! It's not the easiest but it isn't impossible!
great insights! thanks for sharing
I would love to see your outfits of the day as an MSL 😄
I need to do this one! I got you!
travel nursing helps me with saving for education!
God bless you as a travel nurse. It's lucrative but also a lot of work
It's nice to hear you're liking it. Do you have tips on how an International Medical Graduate can get a MSL position?
Unfortunately I do not.
Hi Jackie! Great video -thank you for sharing!
Your tips are so valuable, they sound simple but they definitely make the difference🙏🏾
Thank you! They really are simple but we need to hear it said out loud.
Such an informative video, thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Great blog Dr. Jackie! This is the one I will save ans share with all those asking about breaking into med affairs!
Looking forward to the travel vlogs!
I’m at a crossroads now. I went into college to get my RN (ASN) and I am almost done with my prereqs. I have until October 20th to decide if I want to continue the nursing or change my major to biology to avoid having to take prereqs again after I’m done with my bachelor’s. I feel bad leaving my RN plans go, because it would be good money and great PCE and shadowing opps. However, you and I are like-minded with how brain works, and I fear that nursing will bore the heck out of me. I LOVE the science, the anatomy, physiology, and chemistry of things. I MUST know how and why they work. So, I’m strongly considering PA school. I’m 43 and if I can shorten the years spent in school doing prereqs, I’d prefer that route. But I’m feeling a bit of imposter syndrome and nervous that I may regret leaving my RN plans. Advice? Love, love, love your videos! We have so much in common! TYSM!
Thank you for your transparency
Hi Dr Jackie. What would you recommend to specialize in a certain aspect of patient care ? For example I’m interested in and will eventually narrow down one the following: neurology, high risk obstetrics and/ or pediatrics.
Which PA school did you go to? How many months was your program?
Thank you for watching! I graduated from Marquette University and at the time, my program was a 3 year program. I'm glad to say Marquette has now gone to a 2 year program.
Thank you so much for sharing your journey!
Thank you even more for watching!
Thank you so much for making these videos! I am a PA as well. And I just enrolled in the DNSC program at Lynchburg university. I’m also interested in becoming an MSL I appreciate your down to earth presentation. I would love to hear more about how you got into the MSL role. Maybe you already have a video talking about that, though. Good luck with everything you do! Keep the videos coming!
You are very welcome! I believe in authenticity! I'm here to give the real. I really networked my way into my MSL role. I do have a video th-cam.com/video/D0W3m_Q_mDg/w-d-xo.html that goes into my journey and transition. :-)
You helped me greatly. I found this page looking for answers and exactly what you wanted to do I did till I talked to a nurse last night. I’m in nursing school now. And wanted something after I obtained my BSN
Thank you for watching! Yes! Venture out and go against the grain! There really is a lot you can do as PA and it is different than being a NP in many aspects. Best of luck on your journey!
I have a PA who is willing to let me shadow her over the summer, how many hours would be appropriate to ask for ? I don’t want to seem like I’m asking for too much
I would say long enough for them to be able to write a good letter of recommendation if needed. I'd start out any shadowing experience by letting them know up front you want to gain a better understanding of the profession and hopefully obtain a letter of recommendation. I would then ask them how much time they would need you to shadow to comfortably write something.
I clicked on this video because I saw the "Finer" Blue....Thank you Soror!!!!!! I have been going back and forth for a minute and your channel has blessed me immensely to make some real life decision over here...LMOB!!!!
Ayyeee! You can tell I made this video after a meeting, lol! Thank you so much for watching! I'm trying to give the people what they need!
I plan on going to AT for my DHSc, and I wanted to ask if it is expensive and how have your experience been.
Thanks for watching! Sigh....school is expensive no matter what, but the end result in this instance is worth it. I was part of the inaugural DMSc program and I know there is a bit of difference with the DHSc program. I found it challenging, but doable. You got this! What are you hoping to do with your doctorates?
I live in Austin,TX and I don't see a lot of black women who are in the healthcare field. When I use to live in Atlanta,GA i saw a lot of black women and black men who are in the healthcare field. It still isn't a lot of us that is in the healthcare field. When I was a CNA working in a nursing home. I didn't see any other CNA's that looked like me. I had white nurses who talked to me any kind of way. I Quit yep. I am taking my pre-reqs at a community college here in Austin,TX and I am the only African-American women who is a health science major. I haven't met anyone else who is a health science major that looks like me. After I become a nurse. I want to relocate where there are more people in the healthcare field who look like me. @Jackie Edwards
Thank you for watching! Truthfully, there are not a lot of minorities in medicine, definitely not reflective of society. I want to encourage you to continue to push through even though this challenge exists. Patients need to see representation. It isn't easy and honestly, even with all my experience and credentials, I still experience some crazy, microaggressions and other not-so-subtle racism.
U mentioned it. Np and PA don’t exist 🙆♂️🙆♂️🙆♂️🙆♂️🙆♂️🙆♂️🙆♂️🙆♂️🙆♂️
Not sure what you mean
I hear you about the nursing theory BS, totally boring and uninteresting fluff! Not to mention good bye to all of the nursing baggage!
Whew! Nursing theory tried to take me out!
new sub here. im a licensed physical therapist and thinkin into PA OR NP so this video really helped me out. still deciding tho
Thank you for watching and subscribing! You have some time to decide. You gotta see what fits best for your life. There are great options for both.
Keep doing your thing. We appreciate you.
Thank you cousin! Love you!
Not going to PA school but trying to go back for clinical psych. This has been very helpful, thank you!
Ahhh, thank you! Honestly, the personal statement information will be helpful for anyone needing to write one. It's just that PA applicants seem more interested. I'm glad you found it helpful!
Thank you for this inspiring video. I am currently a 25 year old mom of 4 year old twin boys, and Im considering the PA Route.
Thank you for watching! While it may be challenging, it is not impossible! Go for it and best of luck!
I’ve never left a comment on TH-cam before but wow I am so grateful for this video. I was accepted into PA school when I was 3 months pregnant, I started last fall when my daughter was 5months and she had COVID 2 days before I started school, her symptoms were moderate I tried going the first week of class but I was miserable and depressed (I was still struggling with postpartum depression) and my program let me take a leave of absence so that I can have more time with my daughter. I will be starting again Fall 2023 and my daughter will be 1 year and 5 months so I am doing everything to be well prepared. I came across your video looking for some type of advice and thank you. You have given me exactly that. She will be in daycare during the time I’m at school but I’m still working out after school plans/care since my husband works out of town 3weeks out of the month so I am basically a single mom.. my mom lives 2 hours away but is going to try to work something out so that she can watch her after school and weekends but I’m just so worried my mom guilt will get the best of me.. I’m so glad I watched your video and learned there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Awww, thank you so much for watching! I am glad you found this video helpful! I had 1 year old twins and a 7 year old when I started and even though it was challenging, I graduated with honors. All children have survived, lol! Do not let mom-guilt win! Our kids are also watching us accomplish hard things. I'm a big believer of short-term pain for long-term gain. This will be such a short moment in time, but will lead to so many opportunities. You got this! Your fulfillment and purpose as an individual outside of being a wife and mom also matter. Best of luck!
Thank you for this video. I’m currently trying to pursue PA school but due to its rigorous path… I am trying to get my BSN first then later apply to PA more prepared.
Thank you so much! It isn't an easy decision and you have to do what is best for your life. It takes a lot of work no matter what, but the reward is so worth it! Best of luck!
I kept hearing you speak about the patient and giving care. I hope that is true because that is what NP or PA or any care giver to patients is all about to me. I went to a two NP and do to the treatment and lack of real patient concern shown by both. I bought a MEDICAL ALERT BRACELET that states "I refuse any treatment form any Nurse Practitioner." I realize that Doctors get the God complex but I sure don't need it from a Nurse Practitioner. I am an individual and should be treated with respect to both my privacy and modesty. I hope you are able to not fall into the narcissistic God complex that I was exposed to.
Thank you for watching! I think there will always be good, bad, better, worse no matter the role. There will be those who have questionable motives, but my focus has always been the patient. I never got into my profession for money or clout. I'm sorry you had a not-so-good experience and hope in the future, every health care provider you encounter has your health at the forefront.
You just said everything that I’ve been trying to figure out how to say this whole time!!!😂 I care more about the science aspect than the hand holding. & I don’t care to learn “nursing theory”
Thank you so much for watching! Girllllll, I could not take another nursing theory class...I would have went nuts!
