There Will Never Be Another Gordie Howe
#hockey #nhl #gordiehowe
Gordie Howe, is one of the greatest players in hockey history, a man who cheated father time to play in the NHL in five decades, a man who won 4 stanley cup championships, had 23 NHL all-star appearances, won 6 hart trophies and 6 art Ross trophies, as the NHL’s most valuable player and top point-scorer. A man who had 22 consecutive NHL seasons of scoring on at least 23 goals… And whats crazy is that this list of achievements barely scratches the surface on how Mr. Hockey has left an impact on the game we see today.
Born March 31, 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan as one of nine children, Gordie Howe’s pro hockey career got off on a bad foot. Not for Howe necessarily, but for the New York Rangers and Lester Patrick, who famously told a 14-year-old Howe at their tryout camp in Winnipeg that he “might as well go home” because he’d “never be a hockey player.”

Yeah I dunno... I feel like gretzky's skills were ahead of his time. He was a pioneer in the way he played. However I feel like if he was born in 1991 instead of 1961, he would be only a slightly above average player 🤷🏻‍♂️ but of course, the way he played back than was completely different from most players at the time. I honestly don't see prime Gretzky scoring nearly as many goals in today's NHL because of the evolution goaltenders and how the position is played today.

How good was he?? The best. I talked to several players that played against him and they did their best to shadow him but he would disappear and the next time they saw him, he had the puck and was setting up plays or scoring. According to several of these guys, he had incredible lateral mobility.

Kane is a very talented but his best quality is no fear of taking the big shot. There are few people who have come up with so many key goals in important moments. Some people are winners. Hawks had a bunch of hardcore winners on these teams: Kane, Toews, Keith, Hossa, Seabrook, etc. Mental toughness.

Mario played a lot like Jean Beliveau who was the Generational Center of his era. I only saw Beliveau at the tail end of his career and the last 5 Stanley Cups as Captain of the Habs. Which was more than either Gretzky (4) or Lemieux (2) or Bobby Orr (2)....overall his 10 Stanley Cups is 2 more than those 3 combined. Of course the 5 in a row 1956-1960 Canadiens had 7 Superstars and Henri Richard ended up with 11 Stanley Cup Rings (the #1 of all time in this TEAM SPORT) so as Great as both were, Beliveau (with 13 Stanley Cup Finals...still the most ever) was in his Prime and both were on 2 Dynastic Teams which skews things in their favor on the Stanley Cup side of things. Red Kelly with 8 Stanley Cups was also on 2 Dynastic Teams (Red Wings of the early 50s, that beat Montreal in 7-game Stanley Cup Finals in 1954 and 1955, and the 1960s Toronto Maple Leafs and 4 Stanley Cups each, 4 as an offensive defenseman with Detroit, the latter 4 as a Center). So IMHO as good as both Gretzky and Lemieux were in their primes (Gretzky had more support with the Oilers hence his 4 Stanley Cups...and the Oilers won in 1990 without him), I agree with Ted Lindsay who felt that Beliveau was even better! One defensive WINNING PLAY was stick-handling into the corner rather than take a chance on missing the empty net with an early quick shot that might have missed the empty net and allowed for the slight chance of the opposing team maybe getting lucky with a last shot before the buzzer. There are NO STATS for unselfish play like that! I am pretty sure both Gretzky and Lemieux would have taken the shot (and probably scored too). No doubt you want both Gretzky and Lemieux on any ALL-TIME team.
