Best way to check if an MTG card is Fake with no tools to buy
I describe the best method I have come up with for checking for authenticity of an MTG card (to see if it's real or fake) without having to buy any tools like a jeweler loupe or a digital microscope.
Counterfeit/Fake MTG cards are becoming a problem on eBay and TCGPlayer, especially with lower value cards that no one would think to check and are lower value than what is required for eBay Authenticator. There are probably a lot of fake MTG cards in collections without anyone knowing.

An Ebay seller sold me a high quality fake/counterfeit magic card. I was able to get a refund, but I kept the card to make comparisons with a real magic card.

I show more evidence that a high quality fake magic card that I received on Ebay is a fake by doing some comparisons of the green dot and holographic foil stamp under a digital microscope.

I show evidence that a high quality fake counterfeit magic card that I showed in my last video that I received on Ebay is indeed a fake by doing some comparisons under a digital microscope. I also compare the different versions of real magic cards that are printed today under a digital microscope.
Ebay seller caught selling a high quality fake magic card. How to check for fakes
มุมมอง 50K4 ปีที่แล้ว
Ebay seller sells me a high quality fake/counterfeit magic card. It's pretty difficult to tell that this card was fake without using a jewelers loupe. Counterfeits are getting more realistic, especially for newer magic cards. UPDATE: The eBay seller that sold me this card told me he genuinely did NOT know that the card was fake (which I do believe) and he issued a prompt refund and apology. I w...
ebay user selling 100s of fake cards - how to identify fakes

I found this Ebay user sellings 100s of fake magic the gathering cards. I show how to identify fake magic cards on ebay
1:47 you just need this frame to see its fake TM is way to pronounced and clean look at real ones the T is botched on them all and the TM in general looks a little unclean as the black dots and blue dots petrude into it (for the T with botched i mean the vertical line got cut left and right and is a little tilted to the left most of the time sometimes it falls off to the left.. if you check some you will know what i mean)
Thanks so much. This is very helpful. I was wanting to check a lotr surge foil and wanted to make sure I hasn't got hosed.
me furiously zooming into my $1.50 card.
i appreaciate the niceley clipped fingernails
Phone cameras are hit and miss. Just get a jeweler's loop.
Who would put so much effort into a 40$ card?
The red dot method no longer works on new cards as printers have changes and no longer use the same mechanism
I read the printing machine that makes the fakes costs 1 and a half million dollars
What about 30th anniversary cards?
I know it sucks for all the marks who thought buying cardboard was an "investment", but for people who just want to play the game as intended without getting ripped off, these unauthorized reprints are amazing.
No it isn't. Don't confuse proxy for fakes. They're entirely different thing. Watch the intro & read the desc again. These are fakes trying to be sold at bit less than real price to scam people. They are still pricy while also illegitimate. Proxy services are good, yes, but most proxy service clearly marked their proxies. These are just scams.
I appreciate your comparison, but I feel like you're also giving the people making these fakes lots of pointers on how to correct their mistakes lol
from far away the fake looks more slight blur to color and font.
Saturation of ink is not a good test, wizards has at least 3 different locations that print for them, there's inconsistencies between prints on authentic cards. I've seen these differences from one booster pack.
toby flenderson plays magic?
I deal with cards constantly. Differences in color are NORMAL and occur at the factory. I have pulled cards out of the same pack with different coloring for the same card. Telling people color variations mean fraud is irresponsible and false. O-Pee-Chee itself has talked about print experiments they did and stock changes that changed how a card looked. This is especially true for older cards.
@@HockeyHistoryArchive This is an old video and I have a newer one that goes into more detail, but the color differences are only indications to look further. It's the zoom in on the print dots that show it's fake
Crazy that people go this far for cardboard gane pieces. Just play the fakes lol
no tools except a phone with a really good camera, mine dosnt work well enough
We need action against pirates 😭😭😭
won't work with double sided cards
the corners are a dead giveaway lol
This is great, but only works if you have a decent camera. I (unfortunately) don't, but it's still good info nonetheless!
So if the quality is better, it’s a proxy. Lmao
Love to buy the fake ones, just a souvenier.. here, 1 dollar.-
thanks this was helpful
Just buy proxies and you will never have this problem
why spend money on something that can be made for extremely cheap. why not take the fakes and play with them, just as fun.
I know the seller who sells these. Good guy. Decent prices for “sets” like duals/mana rocks/swords etc. pretty sure 80% of my “high end” collection is fake at this point 😂. Sold all of my real high end for a down payment on a house.
If an alternative manufacturer is capable of producing an identical product at a lower price then why continue to purchase the authentic ones.
If you're buying lots of cards, it's worth it to buy a jeweler's loupe. I have a 10x loupe (very small and cheap) that I used for collecting minerals, and it works beautifully for this too. At 10x you can see the red pattern and the "volcano" as well as a number of other items (mana symbols, lettering, etc). A loupe also scares off fraudsters because it makes you appear to be an expert even if you may not be. Good video though! Thanks for the tips
Thanks so much! So helpful!!
I believe that foil security stamp has been recreated successfully. Yes its hard to make this on your own. Maybe they are lifting and applying an authentic stamp (in some cases)?
The set symbol was an instant giveaway, even before you pulled out the real card i noticed it specifically.
I'm going to guess that the fake and real did their jobs. Make money and they're playable.
I like how the fake one looks like it has more detail in the art
I’ll take the fake one
Thanks!
“One looks more saturated the other looks more dull.” “One looks more matte the other looks more low-gloss.” “One looks muted the other looks more vapid.”
fakes are so easy to see because they always print using a 1 pass method. wizards prints using full passes of color then black. thats why their black lines are so sharp. the fakes print it all in one pass, making the entire card carry the same blurry texture even onto the black lines. basically if the black lines look blurry at all, its fake
Watch the video, this "fake" did go through multiple prints for each color.
As someone who doesnt play magic, i kinda forget theres a lack of quality assurance with wizards of the coast (i should know, i got a miscut base set Ninetales holographic), but this is sad if the fakes are better quality than the actual product. Judges can easily accept decks that could be partially faked, jewelers loop the winning decks if this is an actual problem in the Magic community
The problem is that magic card have no real security features. Compare a magic card that is worth 100 $ with a 100 $ bill. If you do you will see that the 100 $ bill has tons of security features which are very difficult to fake. Magic cards are peaces of paper about which no one cares, not even WOTC.
Good eye! The fake card seems to be a "4th gen" counterfeit, made in China. If you can't get your money back, I recommend writing FAKE on the back in Sharpie, so that this doesn't get accidentally mixed up with your authentic cards.
I've seen cards flagged as fake but they were actually legit because of Wizard's crappy printing quality, even within the same set. Don't get me started on foils.
I dont care if the card is fake. They have become so damn expensive that at this point buying a cheap ass copy of the card is a better option. Because none of my friends I play with can tell the difference anyways and none of them really care anyways.
The definitive real vs fake card comparison resource.
I'm a real newbie here. How do you know that these differences are signs of a fake vs variations in printing quality?
We don't know, it could actually both be real and this dude to simply comparing two different print schemes. However, this does bring into question about the value of mtg cards. I personally and trying to move value out of my cards and make sure they're not in cards that can be faked.
Im tryping this when youre showing 5x. Look, digital zoom better speak my natuve language better, because at this point youre a tweaker betting on the set symbols slight color difference and pulling other ghosts out in a strange dance of self-gratification. Edit: ok. Im convinced. Good fakes. I really like the effort that. Goes into good fake cards. Believe it or not, i studied to try and make good fakes for personal amusement only. Not to sell or trade. Its simply fun to try and copy.... Well .. anything perfectly
5:39 Try, if you must 😅
To be fair the print quality I have received from actual wotc cards is actual trash. I have proxy’s from websites that look better than the real deal. Its the equivalent of moders fixing broken video games, where the company refuses to make the game any better
WIthin 10 seconds you could tell it was fake because of the sheen on the card, and how unnaturally dim it looks for an mtg card.
This is the reason why I sold all my MtG cards and play Modern using high quality proxies proxies via The League. With $1.000 I can have 5 decks of extremely high quality proxies that can't be spotted even in an offcial tournament setting.
