I so miss riding in SF! Did it in the mid 90s. From lower Haight to the Embarcadero all the time
I also miss riding over the GG to Tiberon
As a new cyclist (just bought my bike over a month ago) a piece of advice I would say don't just blindly buy recommendations from avid bikers - do your OWN research see what suits YOUR OWN needs. I almost bought a phone mount for $65 because of a friend's recc I am glad I went to check different ones out at REI and bought one for $20 that is perfectly fine
Thanks for the comment and congrats on your new bike purchase! That's a great point, it's always good to be a smart consumer and find what suits YOU best. Recommendations have a place when, say, you're starting your research journey. In the end, you want to be happy and feel empowered you did your due diligence.
super awesome video! I love the furnace analogy you put - after YEARS of conflicting weight loss tips I am finally learning that calories are GOOD even NECESSARY!
Awesome❤
Great video
Hi carolin, can I join one of your group rides?
Which mask are you wearing in this video? Thanks for the video, I think this would be a great way to see the sites if I can get to that side of the country.
yw, under armour.
nice video, do you use the soft carrier to contain you bicycle in the airplane? what is the carrier bag's name? also bring them when you ride?
If you're trying to lose weight, should you still eat every 30 minutes or so while biking? Or is it just for people who ride long distances that you have to eat?
plus if you are on a bike in the city, you don't have to worry about your car getting broken into
🤣
Also worth noting, combining your bike ride with Muni really helps you get further than you might think possible on a bike. SF is amazing on bike and don't be afraid of going up hills; it's a beautiful feeling
Great tip. Yes, I personally enjoy the hills for the reward and the views! thankfully, ebikes can help people conquer those hills
Smart approach. Thanks for sharing your thought process.
calorine
Simple green. Great tip!
Check. Like this video...too long since i pedaled some of these paths.
It's very important to be careful to avoid MUNI light rail and cable car tracks while riding in the city. Lots of people get their wheels caught in the tracks and crash.
Yes! thanks for calling that out. So important to stay attentive and ride perpendicular to the tracks when crossing them (and making sure to check for cars around ya).
oral maxillofacial surgeons have both MD and DDS degrees, they are so badass
We are lucky now that we will have Ocean Beach as well.
Indeed! Looking forward to following that development.
Carolin, can you please make a video on how to get from SF to Golden Gate View Point over the Golden Gate Bridge? I visited SF many years ago and rented a bicycle to cross the bridge but never saw a sign that would direct me to the left side when crossing the bridge and explore those vista points, so I followed the main road and ended in Sausalito where I took the boat to get back to SF. I heavily regret to this day that I didn't go there, and when I see the movies like Boys&Girls with Freddie Prince Jr. and Claire Forlani it always reminds me how beautiful SF is from that vista point. Hope to get another chance to visit someday! Happy New Year and greetings from Europe 👋 Love your videos!
aw, bummer that you weren't able that epic shot! Noting and adding to my queue. can see the challenge in accessing certain vista points and trying to figure out how to get around that part of the other side of the bridge safely. Happy to new year and hope you can come back and visit again!
A very informative and helpful video; for SFO denizens and visitors, alike.
🙌🏻
Great video!!
Glad you liked it!
Another example of the "bike lane paradox" at work: When you add bike lanes, opponents usually say that removing a lane will worsen automobile gridlock because with fewer lanes for cars, it will take more time for the traffic to clear out of the city. In reality, however, when you add bike lanes (often by removing on-street parking), congestion decreases. This is because the people who were previously parking on the street, now have changed their habits. They drive less or have moved out of the area. More people take up cycling because the bike lane is safer and faster, and some even give up their car for city driving. In Toronto, they are thinking of reversing on bike lanes because the Premier does not believe in the bike lane paradox -- even though the Toronto Fire Dept. says that response time is now shorter, as a result of fewer cars on the streets. Businesses may initially see fewer customers driving in, but after a while they are replaced by customers who arrive on foot or bike. With e-bikes, even a hilly area like SF can become a very bike friendly city!
Thanks for the comment. Bike lanes are transformative in many ways and I've fortunately experienced what it's like when a city puts pedestrians and cyclists first. Of course with change, there's gonna be pushback and some projects may require longer implementation to see potential. E-bikes make our hills more manageable, and it’s inspiring to hear about reduced congestion and faster emergency response times in Toronto. I hope SF keeps investing in bike-friendly infrastructure for a more sustainable future!
Great job Carolin! Happy Holidays, hope you're enjoying the beautiful City!
ty and happy holidays, still feel like a tourist even after being here for a while!
Learn how to look behind you (stretches help) and still ride in a straight line. most of us live in urban and suburban areas
What's the lowest gear you had on your bike for this trip? (e.g. a compact crank (34/50) with a 28 in the back?)
I'd modify #1: "Get a bike fit BEFORE buying a bike. The fitter can recommend a model that will suit your individual proportions of legs, torso, arms, flexibility, etc. If your heart is set on a particular model, at least the fitter can help you get the right SIZE of that model." and tip #11: "Especially when descending or cornering, look where you want to go and your bike will magically go exactly there. If you look at a hazard like a rock or a tree, you will tend to hit them." tip #12: "Never go at 100% when descending/cornering. Always leave a little head room, limit yourself to say 90% or 95%, and you will relax and do it more smoothly."
@bikewithcarolin How did you do to pack the gravel wheels? Removing all the air? Are they 40c?
yes, removed all the air and they are 40s, tight squeeze but it worked.
very cool Carolin, i need a new bike bell, and that one looks and sound impressive. i look forward to some better, dryer and sunny weather in the spring so i can do more biking, right now i am trying to get my usual strength back in climbing and swimming for the winter season.
Spurcycle bell, had mine for years, expensive but worth it.
This are all really useful things. Thank you
Could you reset the link for the egg organiser please. It does not work currently. Big thanks and best wishes for a lovely Christmas.
updated, have a great holiday!
Wow, super cool Carolin! You have a lot of nice stuff now. 😅
investments in health..priceless..
Your apartment is so tidy!
My 1st time eat natto it taste like coffee🫣✌🏼
I can see that!
🙈🙊🙉
About those bottle holders - you can buy one "aluminum alloy", painted, for about $3. You can replace it 10 to 15 times to get to the cost of a titanium one 😂
Do you remove the fork when packing up your bike? You have lots of great info on your channel.
I'd like to know whether you pay any specific attention to electrolyte loss (Na, Mg, K) when cycling, and whether this affects women differently. One thing I noticed when riding with women is that they seem to drink less than men. For rides in hot weather of 1 hour or more, I now always use some kind of electrolyte and I feel it makes a noticeable difference.
great list. bike fit is definitely crucial
Hi I came across your channel and immediately hooked. I love how you share your story, you have great charisma. I am cyclist myself and my friend and I (group of 8) are planning to fly from Indonesia which is where we are from to SF. We plan to cycle from SF to LA via highway 1 Since you are from SF. Have you done this route before ? Thank you Carolin
Sounds amazing! I've done a small portion of highway but nothing past Pescadero. There's a stretch along Big Sur that I believe is impassable due to a road closure from rain years ago. I'd look into that segment just in case. Have a fantastic time, ride safe, and wear lots of bright colors!
Where do you put your camera? It's not allowed to take video while riding a bike
Oka Tours provides a fantastic cycling experience in Japan and highly recommend them. Akira and Taku are the best!
Heard about these but first time I've seen one. Good job.
Cool, great job Carolin! All that without a front loading cargo bike too! Were ebikes allowed to compete too?
thanks, it was fun! and yes ebikes are allowed...i believe there's a category for that...
excellent list. New Follower. Thanks!!
What a fantastic event. Never heard of it before. Well done you guys from South France.
that's an awesome tour. I wonder if the would allow 50lb e-bikes for people that are less fit such as me.
I would reach out to them! They're very adaptable.
Advice I'd give to someone deciding to begin cycle-commuting, assuming you were an experienced cyclist would be this: Never commute in your work clothes or work in your commute clothes.
❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
I like biking alone.
Would you prefer these as wrap around cycling glasses rather than wayfarers?
